Race Report

Race for Life - Bolton, Sunday 4th July I first became involved in Race for Life in 2003; I was a member of a gym in Shropshire but had never been for a run – not even on a treadmill. Some friends at the gym decided they were going to enter Race for Life in Telford and asked me to join in. As it happened, I had other plans for that day but the seed had been sown and I started to look for alternative events. The Heaton Park Race for Life coincided with one of my visits home to Salford so I entered that one instead and began training – on the treadmill at first and eventually on the road. So in June 2003, I took part in my first „race‟ and loved it. I have no recollection of the time I did it in; I was simply elated that I could achieve such a distance – 5K seemed like a marathon to me then.

In 2004, I entered Race for Life again – this time in Leverhulme Park in Bolton. I had been running quite a bit more by then and preferred this event as the field was much smaller than Heaton Park – approximately 2000 runners compared with about 6000 at Heaton. I missed the 2005 event as Patrick was born the week before (probably not a good enough excuse, I know!) In 2006, 2007 and 2008 – all at Leverhulme Park – I achieved top ten finishes, but I decided that I wasn‟t going to take part in Race for Life again as by then I was involved in the Grand Prix and racing a lot with Swinton.

In January this year, my good friend and colleague, Tracy, found out that she has breast cancer. She has now finished chemotherapy and is undergoing radiotherapy. Thankfully, she 14 has responded well to treatment so far but it is still relatively early days. The news of 15 Tracy‟s illness was such a shock to my colleagues and I that we decided to do something to 16 raise money and awareness for Cancer Research. Yes, you‟ve guessed it … Race for Life!

For many of my colleagues, the prospect of running / walking 5K was similar to my own feelings back in 2003. However, on July 4 th, 20 Lever Edge ladies bravely walked / ran the 20 distance with Tracy there at the finish to cheer us on. It was a rewarding, albeit emotional 21 morning with lots of people feeling extremely proud of what they had achieved. 22

I completed the race in 20:06 and finished in first place. It was amazing to be out in the lead and to cross the line first, but that is not really the main aim of the event. It was more amazing that so many ladies turned out to raise awareness and money for such a deserving charity. Race for Life is a fantastic event - a great way to get into running and an unthreatening event for a first race. It gave me the „running bug‟ and I‟ve never looked back.

Race Series Report

North Cheshire Grand Prix Series Finally I managed at last to finish the series, but unfortunately the dreaded curse of this series struck again. This race series I started running 3 years ago, but have never managed to complete the 4 out of 5 races required. The first year I ran in this series, I swear someone had shot me in the leg as I approached the finish of the Bowden race. What had actually happened was I had over stretched as I tried to avoid a hollow in the finishing straight and severely pulled my right hamstring, which meant a lay off from running for two weeks. Not wishing to put anyone off though, I do recommend the race series. It is set around the North Cheshire countryside and is organised by Altrincham & District A.C. and Spectrum Striders. The series comprises of 5 races over the 5K distance, ran on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The races are ran in a very friendly atmosphere catering for all standards with the final positions taken with the best average time of the best 4 races. The races included in the series are Dunham Massey 5K (twice), Hollins Green 5K, Bowden 5K and the Lymm 5K. DUNHAM MASSEY 5K - FRIDAY 28 TH MAY

The series kicks off with the Dunham Massey 5K at the end of May. This is also the venue for the 4th races of the series, which is 3 weeks later. Held within the National Trust grounds of Dunham Massey Park, the race starts in front of Dunham Massey - a stunning early Georgian house. The surroundings are magnificent and it is a fantastic setting for the 5K race. The course is generally flat and runs over a variety of terrain. The route consists of 2½ laps of a circuit that is split between road and country. I was having a good run in this race until I felt a twinge just above the back of my right knee gradually become more painful. I now had the dilemma of deciding whether to carry on or drop out. Luckily I was fortunate to be able to just ease off slightly and get through the last mile without hurting too much. When I finished the pain was severe and felt like cramp, I could hardly walk back from the finish to the car. The day after there was a bit of improvement and over the next couple off days had completely disappeared. Thank goodness I was now back to normal training and looking forward to the next race. HOLLINS GREEN 5K - SATURDAY 5TH JUNE

This race is usually ran on the first Saturday in June at 4.30 P.M. The race is in Hollins Green, in the far east of Warrington, and was established in 2002. It is named after Peter Lowe, a Spectrum Striders club member who was killed in a road accident whilst out running nearby in January 2002. The race starts in the center of the village close to the Black Swan pub and the Village cross. There is a small loop within the village before it heads out towards Glazebrook, returning to Hollins Green along quiet country lanes. The finish is in the center of the Village, near to the start. Every year that I have ran there has been a heat wave for this race. Again not to disappoint the sun came out once more to make sure the conditions were just as hot as they could be. I bumped into Paul Rutherford on my warm up (as if I needed to get even warmer) who was here to race, and actually finished with a quite decent time. The start of these races can be a little tricky with so many runners trying to get a good start. I set off steady mainly because of the heat and just to make sure I didnâ€&#x;t pick up and more injuries. Setting off steady allowed me to progress slowly through the field. I was quite pleased with my run as my splits for each of the first 3 kilometre were virtually identical and nobody had actually passed me in the race. SWINTON

Race Series Report

North Cheshire Grand Prix Series The 4th kilometre is always long for some reason, and because I knew of this I was little concerned. Suddenly out the blue the pain I felt last week returned and meant again I had to ease off again to get to the finish. The pain wasn‟t as bad as last time, but now I realise this is something of a problem and need to make sure I get sorted before my next race. BOWDEN 5K - THURSDAY 10TH JUNE

To give myself extra time to recover, I decided I would give this race a miss this year; but having done it in the past I can still let you know what it is like. This race is set in the village of Bowden, which is just outside Altrincham and is the fastest of all the races in the series. If you want a PB this is the course to do it on. The course is ran along quiet residential roads in the leafy suburbs of Bowdon. The race is a two loop course that is fast and flat. It does involve one short off road section (the place that I pulled my hamstring back in 2007). The second time I did this race, I paid due care and attention to this section of the race, just to make sure the same thing didn‟t happen again. After a period of rest and extensive stretching exercises carried out on the injury, I am now back on the road to recovery after missing this race and have set the 2 nd Dunham Massey 5K for my next race, although will just be treating it as a training run. DUNHAM MASSEY 5K - THURSDAY 17 TH JUNE

This is the same venue as the one described for the first race, and this time made sure I had a good warm up with plenty of stretching. The start was tentative, and proceeded to become even more tentative as I ran as if I was stepping on pins. I must admit I didn‟t realise how undulating the surface of the road was in the park, It appeared to me to be like a roller coaster, and I could feel my hamstrings twinging as I navigated myself around the flattest bits on the road. It didn‟t seem to be a problem on the off road part, but certainly when I hit the road section I was very nervous. Eventually I finished in one piece and could now look forward to the last race in the series at Lymm. LYMM 5K - SATURDAY 26 TH JUNE

The race headquarters of this race is at Cherry Tree Primary School in the center of Lymm. The race starts and finishes in nearby Highfield Road which is about a quarter of a mile away from the school. The race is on roads and lanes in the Lymm area and is generally flat with a couple of hills thrown in. Again this turned out to be another very hot Saturday afternoon. I was also taken by surprise by the mass of Astley & Tyldesley runners who had turned out, it must have been one of their club championship runs. Just what you need when you want a quiet return back into racing. Being keen to see what my level of fitness was, after my injury problem, I unfortunately made the mistake of setting off too fast. By the time I got half way round I was shattered and overheated. One by one of the A&T runners passed me effortlessly as I seemed to go backwards. Eventually I did make it to the line and at least I had run hard and had no reaction from the injury, so it wasn‟t too bad after all. So ;pleased to have finished the series for the first time, and happy that it ended on a good note, I look forward to entering the series again next year and hopefully may see a few of our members there as well.

Chorley Harriers 4.4 Mile Trail Race, Wednesday 7th July

On Wednesday 7th July a small but intrepid bunch of runners (Adam Pickup, Rick Waring and Glyn Williams) made their way over to Astley Park, near Chorley, Lancs for the 3 rd in a series of four evening trail races. Perhaps there would have been more there, but for the distraction of the World Cup semi final between Spain & Germany that night. But it was a nice change from the usual Wednesday night club run at Swinton. On a warm and sultry summers evening we made our way around 2 laps of the course with about a hundred or so other runners through some very nice park land and trails through wooded areas. It was all very pleasant and only mildly 'undulating' apart from a nasty incline the organisers had put near the start so we had to do it three times, at the start of each lap and at the end! Thanks for that! The only other obstacle of note was a gaggle of pensioners out for a summer even stroll who had to dive for cover when a marauding mass of runners hurtled towards them down near the duck pond! Rick finished in a highly commendable 38th position in 31 minutes 05 seconds, Glyn finished 48th in 32:20, and Adam in 66th in 35:24. Full results are below: http://www.race-results.co.uk/results/2010/wigan3.htm The final race of the series is 7:30 pm on Wednesday 4th August for those who fancy it. It certainly was a great location for a race and there's also the added bonus of having Astley Hall and Museum to have a look around, which sites within the park itself. http://www.chorley.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=840

Radcliffe 3 Day Challenge

DAY 1 - BULL HILL FELL RACE THURSDAY 8TH JULY 2010 - 5.5 MILES 1100FT CLIMB

An overcast Thursday evening far up north somewhere surrounded by moors and hills and whippet like runners who looked like they might run up mountains at 7 minute miles as a warm up, I wondered again whose idea this race series had been. Not mine I was sure - possibly Lauren or Steve. I‟d blame Steve I decided - after all he wasn‟t there to defend himself. Still, at least I‟d get a chance to find out what this fell racing lark was all about. First challenge was to get to the start. A ten minute walk according to the race details more like half an hour in reality. Starting in a housing estate and ending up in the middle of nowhere looking straight at a great big hill. Swinton runners were Ric (on race number two already after doing Chorley on Wednesday night), Maggie, Lauren (another first time fell racer and unsurprisingly far better at it than I would turn out to be) and me. I placed myself strategically at the back of the pack and we were off. The race started gently enough along a country lane. We soon turned off this however and up a steep stony trail. At this point Maggie (who I‟d been following) took off up the hill like a mountain goat. I managed to pass a couple of people walking already (although in retrospect maybe they had the right idea) and then spotted what looked like a queue ahead of me. Turned out we had to cross a stile and as a result got a little rest waiting my turn (I‟m sure the leaders probably vaulted it - we did things a little slower at the back!) After the stile we started to climb in earnest - as I‟d expected the terrain was very rough - some sort of track which might have been made by a sheep (and was just about wide enough for one) going along the side of the hill. The climbing I could cope with - my concern was the steep drop to the right. Given my ability to fall I had visions of broken limbs and mountain rescue! At the top of the climb we came out onto an open part of the moors picking our way across grassy tussocks. Most people around me seemed to be walking at least part of the time so I settled into a run/ jog/ walk/ stumble combination to the top of the hill. My problems really started when we started to come down the other side. I‟m not good running downhill on the road so throw in some rough terrain and I become truly pathetic. The last part of the big downhill was literally (and I am not joking) vertical. By this stage I was forced to side step down the slope much to the amusement of the marshal at the bottom (I took so long we had a little chat - he told me that the leaders “tonked” it down and promised me that it would be easier from now one).

By this stage I hadn‟t even done half distance and was already exhausted. Luckily, my new marshal friend wasn‟t lying to me and the course was at least run-able for the rest of the distance. I was even able to use the remaining uphill's to re-pass all the people who‟d come steaming past me on the downhill section! I‟d completely lost track of how long I‟d been running for and even what direction I was facing so I was somewhat surprised (and delighted) to discover we were back at the stile from early on in the race. From there, it was one more steep down hill before finally coming into the field to finish the race. I amused myself by nearly falling over my own feet on the final corner and crossed the line with a smile on my face. All in all I surprised myself by actually quite enjoying my first fell race. It‟s safe to say I am not a natural at it and I can‟t imagine that even with practice I‟d be able to run the whole thing (especially the downhill's) but as an alternative to the roads it made a refreshing (if challenging) change and the scenery was certainly much nicer than the usual housing estates.

Rebecca DAY 2 - GIANT’S SEAT SUMMER CROSS COUNTRY RACE FRIDAY 9TH JULY 2010 - 5 MILES

Following my first attempt at a fell race the day before, my legs didn‟t feel as tired as I‟d expected and I was ready for Round Two. We set off with plenty of time but soon hit traffic and then the Sat Nav failed us and we ended up near The Horseshoe at Ringley, with no idea where Giant‟s Seat Scout Camp was. Well, you can imagine the grief Adam – who was driving – was getting at this point. Luckily, we found a „local‟ who directed us to our destination – a field in the middle of nowhere. As it turned out, I had no need to panic about the time as the start was delayed from 7pm to 7.30pm due to an error on an event website. Our team met in the car park (field) and as we were waiting, a group of very fit looking runners returned from their warm-up saying, “I‟ve never seen a course like that”, “Who on earth came up with that course?” etc. It didn‟t bode well, especially when we discovered that we would be running the course they were describing 4 TIMES! Eventually, we gathered at the start – a much smaller number of runners than the previous night at Bull Hill. The course began with a large lap around a field; for me this was the least enjoyable part of the course. After that, it was down steps and into the woods, following thin paths on an undulating journey. In places it was steep, one or two muddy patches and the obligatory stream to cross (well, it wouldn’t be cross country without one!) Actually, I understand Rebecca got chatted up whilst crossing the stream but that‟s a tale for her to tell you… After the woods, it was back round the never ending field again. This was my strongest of the 3 races in the challenge. I enjoyed it a lot and managed to pass several people. By the end of lap 3, I heard Adam and Steve shouting, “You‟re catching Rick up!” but I couldn‟t see where Rick was. It wasn‟t until I saw the times after the race that I realised I was only about 30 seconds behind him. I‟m going to propose that Radcliffe extend the course to 5 laps next year – watch out Rick! Getting into the car to leave, I suddenly realised there was a good chance of me winning a prize as I was the 2nd female to finish. Into the scout hut we went; Adam by this time was giving me grief as he wanted to get home to begin usual Friday night wine consumption. It was worth staying – I won 2nd female prize, Maggie 1st V50 but best of all Maggie, Rebecca

and I won the ladies team prize. On the way home, I felt great but I suspected that my legs would be tired for the 3rd and final event the following day. I suspected correctly, but Iâ€&#x;ll hand over the baton to Maggie to tell you about Day 3‌

Lauren DAY 3 - RADCLIFFE 5 MILE TRA IL RACE SATURDAY 10TH JULY 2010 - 5 MILES

Heading off to the Trail Race on Saturday morning reminded me of the Tour of Tameside, for those who remember it (and for those that don't it was 6 races in 7 days), when everything told you that you shouldn't be enjoying it and your legs really should be tired but somehow you couldn't wait to get to the next event and you find yourself enjoying a strange kind of camaraderie with a load of people you'd walk past on the street without noticing any other day! Day 3 of our mini epic though we were bolstered by the participation of David and Steve. The weather was still hot and sultry, we were still exploring the back roads, scrublands and stretches of water that still vaguely resemble a canal - more shopping trolleys than barges - that comprise Radcliffe and of course we still had our lucky mascot in the form of Patrick who looked like he had more energy than the whole field put together. We were full of smiles as the loudspeaker klaxon sounded and off we set towards Asda before heading off onto the trail, with Richard, resplendent in his Swinton Running kit, and Lauren already disappearing into the foliage. We were promised less climbing than the previous 2 days and well it was less - just!, but there is something about a multi stage race that makes it easier somehow, or that's what I thought when I passed Steve after about 2 miles. I could still hear footsteps close by though and guessed that the heavy breathing wasn't Rebecca and I was right as David came past me with about a mile to go. I'd used the single track with overgrown nettles and thorns to my advantage but alas the canal path opened up and away he went, as gracefully as the swans with their family of cygnets nesting on the opposite bank. Under the bridge and then on to the final hill to the finish - Lauren and Richard were long since back, looking very relaxed and with Rebecca hot on my heels we'd secured the team prize for the day and the 3 day event, well for the women at least. Add to the team prizes, a 2nd place for Lauren and 3rd for me and we didn't do too badly at all. The three day eventers were tired but cheery, with David and Steve, well tired! The event might have been small but it was perfectly formed and definitely one to watch out for next year and a race where it felt good to be running in Swinton colours again.

Race Report’s

Gill Pimblott Memorial Races, Sunday 11th July The original plan was to complete the Radcliffe 3 Day Challenge and then to just jog around the 1 Mile fun run with the kids, but due to issues at work I had to miss the first two challenge races. Feeling guilty at letting the side down, I signed up for the fun run along with the 5K race being run just after the end of the fun run. 1Mile Fun Run Daniel, Nathan and myself met up with Patrick and Lauren at the start. (Laurens fourth race in 4 days). After a quick announcement on the route we were off on a lap of the small loop on the Gin Pit course. Patrick and Lauren took the lead of the Swinton runners with Nathan, Daniel and myself following closely behind. Nathan had a fall half way round but picked himself up and raced after Patrick once more. The boys finished the race in the same positions as they had been in for most of the race, and were presented with a nice medal for their super effort.

5K Trail Race I was joined for the main race by both Adam and Paul Shier, The race was a small loop, followed by a large loop of the Gin Pits course , but in different configuration from the usual routes. At the start Adam took the lead of the Swinton Runners, followed by myself and then Paul. On the run up the hill I began to feel the strain from the previous days run, and Adam began to pull away. I managed to tag along with one of the A&T runners and get a SWINTON

nice pace going. I had worked myself up to finish the large loop with a run up the hill, but the course missed this out and continued around the back. On the run-in to the finish I managed to put a sprint in and pass a few runners, but almost came un-stuck by slowing down just prior to the end, thinking that where the announcer stood was the end. I was not the only runner to slow at that point. Greeted at the correct finish with plenty of shouts of encouragement from the kids, along with Lauren, Lisa and Adam who had finished ahead of me. It was not too long before Paul came in. Well a great race, and plenty of money raised for charity. Full Results available here

Interview with Runner of the Quarter - Carol Hart Why and when did you take up running ? I needed to keep fit, and found it hard to stick to timetabled classes at the gym, I needed more flexibility, I started to run in 2008 with a group from work leading up to running the Blackpool Half Marathon with them. Iâ€&#x;m the only one to carry on with the running from the group. Why did you join Swinton Running Club ? Whilst running in the Ladies Race in 2008 , I found the marshals very friendly, and helpful. I joined in January 2009. Has the Club helped you to achieving your aims ? Yes, especially when training for the Edinburgh Marathon, Very supportive and offered good advice and running tips Which sessions do you enjoy the best ? Hills and track, although hard not something I would alone. And I feel I get the most benefit from these sessions. Which sessions do you least enjoy ? Wednesday sessions can be good to meet up with everyone, but I feel uncomfortable if the faster ones have to stop and wait for me. What would you like the Club to do more of ? Tips and advice on correct warm-up and stretching. How do you cope with the family and running Used to be easier when Stephen ran on Tuesday and Thursdays, and I ran on Mon days and Wednesday, Now we both run on the same nights it is more difficult and we have to rely a lot on the family.

Racing Advice

You Can Drink Too Much !

During hot weather all runners find that their need for hydration increases during and after a run. Generally, it is sensible to drink fluid when you feel the need and this will be sufficient. However, during long training runs or races of long duration e.g. over about 1.5 hours, it is worth planning ahead, not only to avoid dehydration, but also to avoid a potentially more serious condition. As you sweat, you lose both water and sodium. If you then replace this with a lot of water alone this dilutes the sodium and can cause hyponatremia which is an abnormally low concentration of sodium in the blood. The early signs are often subtle and can include nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, slurred speech, and confusion. Unfortunately, as the symptoms are similar to dehydration, some runners then assume they are dehydrated and then drink even more water which will exacerbate the problem. There then follows the possibility of seizures, coma and even death. There have been reported cases of death due to hyponatremia during some high profile marathons and ultra distance events. So, how do you stay hydrated but avoid over doing it? The most common advice is to drink between 400ml and 800ml per hour of running and aim towards the lesser amount for smaller runners, including most women, and towards the higher end for heavier, fast runners competing in hot humid conditions. However, if you are running at a slow speed or walking occasionally, in practicality you may only need as little as 100 to 200ml per hour, depending on the conditions. In addition to this it is sensible to choose an electrolyte sports drink which will replace some sodium and also contain carbohydrates to help replace energy during a long event. The incidence of hyponatremia has increased in recent years, possibly due to more slower runners competing in long events who have sufficient time to take on a lot of fluid at water stations. So, just remember its not always the more fluid the better – if you are thirsty or its a hot day you do need to take on more fluid, but donâ€&#x;t try and force down liquid in excess just because you feel you ought to! it is also worthwhile to practice your race day re-hydration plan in advance, including testing out various sports drinks so you know what suits you. hyponatremia Many thanks to Louise at the Good Run Guide for permission to use this article.

Caption Competition A bottle of pressed fermented grapes awaits the SRC member who can produce the best caption to the monstrosity below. (I might even stretch the budget far enough to afford Blue Nun!) Entries via the forum or emails to Sarah or Steve. We will be judging and our sense of humour will have the final word Suggestions so far....  "Sarah was determined to get the last cheese and onion pie from Pie night this time"  "Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhh!"  "16 miles in Sarah discovered Lauren was responsible for signing her up for Coniston!" We already have a volunteer to be the butt of next month‟s humour – if you are shy/ averse to severe „Micky taking‟ let us know and we will make sure any photos of you are not used in future competitions. Conversely if you‟re game for a laugh and have a previously undisclosed embarrassing image to share – send it to us!
