Standish Hall 10k Trail Race, 27th February
Carbo Loading Race Results
Standish Hall in Wigan. Having settled into my usual position towards the rear of the field I quickly realised that “a little tricky” was an understatement as every runner had the choice of ploughing through 10 inches of mud or alternatively, the aquatic route through the never-ending puddles. The first 2k is run down and up narrow farm tracks before entering the woods section, this involves steep downhill, through the muddy swamp and a scramble out of the other side. The text message read “Sorry Dave, I can‟t make Standish as I have a sniffle, it‟s a bit cold, I‟m a girl!” Can‟t quite remember the exact excuse but that was typical of my running pal, Phil. Oh well, looks like I‟m doing another race on my own. You may recall that Friday the 25th was one of the wettest days of the year so having completed this race in 2009 I knew that the “trail” would be a little tricky. One hundred and eighty runners gathered at the start of the narrow, muddy farm track that leads around farmland and woods of the former Race results available here
every second until, when crossing the finish line you get that overwhelming sense of achievement and satisfaction which makes the previous 59 minutes and 36 seconds of hell worthwhile. The conditions and course make Standish one of the slowest 10k‟s of the year and I was actually quite pleased with my time bearing in mind that the winner took 36 minutes 33 seconds. I also managed to beat 40 runners, which is good for me. The Standish Trail is run in October and February each year and when it doesn‟t clash with other races, I really would recommend this to anyone who relishes a challenge.
Gasping for breath as I came out of the wood, I was then faced with the famous field of clay. This is a ploughed waterlogged field that is approximately half a mile across and slightly uphill. The disadvan- Especially if your name isn‟t tage of trail shoes is that the Phil ! clay quickly fills the grips making it almost impossible to Dave Williamson walk, let alone go any faster. Having slowly negotiated the field I was greeted with the joy of completing the first lap and the prospect of doing it all over again. If you can imagine running a 10k on Southport beach, you wouldn‟t be far away from the agonies of the Standish Trail. I pushed on and really hated

Race Report
Lostock 6, Sunday 28th February
Contrary to popular belief, this is not the cast of Prisoner Cell Block H A plethora of Swinton runners turned out at Lostock for the first race of the Central Lancs Grand Prix – 22 of us! A cold, dull day but nowhere near as bad as the wind and rain that had been forecast. The race began up a hill, then flattened out for a few miles but the killer hill came at about 4 miles in – wouldn‟t be a favourite for Monday hill reps! Not a terribly eventful race but wonderful that so many Swinton runners competed – great camaraderie! Steve Doxey was our first finisher in 30th place (37:11), closely followed by Mark in 34th place (37:42). They had both raced in the National Cross Country the previous day, as had Rick – barmy? Paul finished in a stunning 39:05 – definitely back in great form. A brilliant Swinton debut (41:11) for Darren Russell – let‟s hope we see him racing for our club again soon. Our other male runners were: Chris, Rick, Jon, Adam, Pete, Steve H and Andy S – awesome running guys! As well as our men‟s team, the ladies were out in force – 11 competitors! Wow – that has to be a record. Lisa‟s delight with her PB (53:44) was amazing to see. I‟m sure she‟s still smiling about it now! Charlie made her Swinton debut (54:27) and is keen to race again soon. The rest of the female team were: Me, Louise, Rebecca, Sarah, Lesley, Dawn, Jean, Carol and Claire. A huge WELL DONE to all. It was very kind of Paul Shier to offer to marshal and photograph the event for Swinton. Cheers Paul! Carl‟s support was also appreciated. In addition, it was good to see our friends Andy and Michelle Coates marshalling and taking photos on the course. Thanks for your shouts of encouragement. All in all, a truly fantastic start to the Grand Prix. Let‟s aim to field even more runners in the forthcoming races.

Race Report
St. Annes 10, Sunday 21th March
The Sun Shines at St Anne’s 10 Miler After getting up with butterflies and having a small panic about what time the race started, I finally arrived at St Anne‟s Fire Station to collect my number, goodie bag and queue for the toilet! We found our way to the start and met up with the rest of the club members for a warm up and a pre race natter! The race started with two laps of the car park, the first half of the race I felt took ages for the windmill to come into view, luckily I had my I-Pod to keep me company. On the last stretch to the windmill I met fellow team mates which I enjoyed as we cheered each other on. It was windy throughout the race however, I didn‟t mind too much as I was enjoying seeing the sun and sand! I now understand what a flat course is like because I think I found one tiny hill throughout, so it‟s perfect if you hate doing hills! The final half of the race seemed to go faster and it felt good actually overtaking some people! As I reached the final two miles I was given a spurt by Tony, who was on his way home, he stopped his car in the road to shout me on! It helped and before long I was sprinting past an A&T lady on the line and my first 10 miler was completed along with a pb! Well done to everyone who turned out. As I‟ve just started to compete I‟m not sure on turn out numbers but it looked good to me and it felt nice to be part of a team..

Race Report
Coniston 14++++, Saturday 27th March When I first let myself be persuaded to enter this race, I wasn‟t quite sure what all the fuss was about. I‟d been to Coniston and walked up the Old Man before – not the most exciting hill in the Lakes, or the prettiest either. I decided that memories of the run must have been enhanced by the after-race drinking. I was wrong – this is a beautiful race. It is tough – especially the extra three miles they tagged on this year – and as Ian warned me, the first five miles are mostly up and there is a vicious hill just over two miles from home. But they are all worth it, something about the scenery is inspiring. I ran the first 10 „undulating‟ miles as fast as I ran the ten flat ones in St Anne‟s the week before – from the resident club hill hater, that‟s some going. Race day as we shivered toward the start line, we passed some seriously professional looking club doing martial arts style warm up routines in unison. We unanimously decided that 17 miles was enough on its own without tiring ourselves with any extra exercise, we‟d warm up on the way. Ric quickly disappeared toward the start line and that was the last I saw of him until I staggered over the finish line. He managed a phenomenal time, only missing out on his target of breaking two hours by 16 seconds – awesome! As we climbed out of the village Lauren and Glyn pulled away with practised ease, only 5 seconds separated them at the finish, so you can imagine what sort of race they had and the nature of the banter in the bar afterward. I managed to keep up with Adam and Rebecca until the 6 mile water station, where Chrissie caught me up and we agreed that their consistent pace was a wonder to behold, we both found the need to slow down slightly and stop talking on the uphill bits. Rebecca is looking very well prepared for her marathon effort in a few weeks time. Chrissie and I managed to find the breath to chat for a few miles; it was nice to get to know another Swinton member, thanks for the company and the support Chrissie. The last mile through the village, when I really wanted to just stop and walk, the support was fantastic, cheering from every street corner, including our own Barbara. There was no way I could stop with all those people watching. Carol and Steve arrived moments after me at the finish, not sure they were still hand in hand, but definitely smiling and full of the joy of achievement. We all achieved a personal best, I drank plenty of Best, the company was the best, Coniston currently rates as the best race I‟ve ever entered and the weekend as the best so far this year. Thanks to everyone for a great weekend and apologies for the complete drivel I was talking by the time that photo was taken! (about half an hour in to a long afternoon I think?)
Sarah

Marathon Preparation - Carbo Loading THE PROS AND CONS OF CARBO-LOADING
The benefits of carbo-loading to runners Correct running nutrition in the final week of your marathon taper can mean the difference between a personal best run or a personal worst. As a result, it should be a key component of your running preparation. If you‟ve heard about carbo-loading but are unsure how to go about it, read on...
Carbo-loading principles Carbo-loading for the marathon was pioneered in the UK in the 1970s by running legend Ron Hill, who experimented with „the diet‟ as it was known then. Ron Hill won a gold medal for the marathon in the 1970 Commonwealth Games, winning in two hours and nine minutes; a phenomenal performance which would stand up against any championship marathon time four decades on. Crediting part of his success to his nutritional preparation, „the diet‟ centres around two distinct phases, namely depletion and loading. The depletion phase. This phase involves eating minimal or nil carbohydrate, keeping hydration levels high and stocking up on protein. Effectively, your carbohydrate fuel tank runs low to empty – you become depleted when running. The loading phase. Immediately following the depletion phase, you switch to the loading phase. This is effectively the reverse of depletion, whereby protein intake is reduced and carbohydrate is increased significantly. Hydration is still maintained at a high level. The end result. The effect of these is that your carbohydrate fuel tanks in your liver and muscles super-compensate for the depletion phase and maximise their supplies, so that you start your race by running with a completely full tank. Carbo-loading advocates describe going into races bursting with running confidence and claim the following benefits: Boundless running energy Never hitting the dreaded „wall‟ More running energy in the final few testing miles Carbo-loading detractors advise that a modified carbo-loading system is just as effective to runners, particularly because of the side effects that can be experienced, which can include: Nausea Fatigue Excessive hunger Reduced immune system function Irritability Subsequent bloating Poor pre-race fuel stocks Clearly, carbo-loading is not to be taken lightly and can be approached in three different ways; full blown, modified and basic. So, if you want to give it a try for your next long-distance running event, use our comparison below and see which system is best for you.
Carbo-loading – the comparison Assuming that your race is on a Sunday, start the programme with a run of approximately ten miles on the preceding Sunday, at the same time as your planned race but at a much slower and easier pace. The remainder of your training during this final week tapers towards the big day and the focus is on your nutrition and hydration. Full blown carbo-loading system Description: Nil carbohydrate during depletion phase. Depletion phase – Sunday to Thursday 12.00 (noon) 1. Starting after your last ten mile run, completely eliminate any form of carbohydrate. 2. Eat plenty of protein, salads, cheese etc. and keep hydration levels very high. .

Marathon Preparation - Carbo Loading Loading phase – Thursday 12.00 to Sunday morning 1. On Thursday morning, complete a short run of approx four miles. 2. Post run, immediately start eating large quantities of carbohydrate. 3. Focus on complex forms, for example: pasta, whole-grains and rice. 4. Keep hydration high and include small quantities of protein. Notes: Eat a normal pre-race breakfast, by now you should be feeling very full. Pros: Could result in a personal best run Cons: High risk, hard to adhere to, and end result could be low fuel stocks if insufficient fuel consumed during loading phase. Modified carbo-loading system Description: Small quantities of carbohydrate eaten during depletion phase. Depletion phase – Sunday to Thursday 12.00 (noon) Similar to the full-blown system but, include a small amount of carbohydrate, for example: breakfast cereal each morning. Loading phase – Thursday 12.00 to Sunday morning Exactly the same as for the full-blown system: 1. On Thursday morning, complete a short run of approx four miles. 2. Post run, immediately start eating large quantities of carbohydrate. 3. Focus on complex forms, for example: pasta, whole-grains and rice 4. Keep hydration high and include small quantities of protein. Notes: eat a normal pre-race breakfast, by now you should be feeling very full. Pros: Lower risk, the ability to super-compensate may be slightly less but should still result in good carbohydrate stocks. Cons: May not maximise fuel stores as well as the full-blown system. Basic carbo-loading system Description: Carbohydrate allowed in slightly reduced quantities from normal intake. Depletion phase – Sunday to Thursday 12.00 (noon) After your ten mile run, decrease your carbohydrate intake slightly. Loading phase – Thursday 12.00 to Sunday morning In the last three days before your race, increase your carbohydrate intake. Notes: Prepare exactly as you would for any race. Pros: No risks or side effects and easy to adhere to. Cons: Does not invoke the super-compensation technique so fuel stores are unlikely to be at absolute optimum. Advanced methods of fuelling your running fitness For the novice marathon runner, the basic system is most suitable. You are learning the event and you can do without potential problems in the final week. However, as your experience grows, you may like to try more advanced methods of fuelling up. Clearly there are risks associated with the full-blown system and the possibility that your fuel stocks may not reach maximum if you fail to load sufficiently in the final days. However, if you get the timing right, the benefit of a completely full tank is certain to make the difference as your race progresses. One solution is to try for the middle ground and experiment with the modified system for your next running event. The risk of experiencing any side effects is lessened, yet there are still significant benefits to enjoy. If you find that it works for you, you can then decide if you really want to go the whole hog and try the full-blown method or simply stick with the tried and tested running system that you know works for you.
