Race Report
Wilmslow Half Marathon, Sunday 28th March All that was going through my mind was remembering how my legs felt when I got to the 9 mile mark at the Swinton Half Marathon back in September. Just 6 months later and despite muttering those infamous words about “never doing another half again” here I was getting up at 7.30am Sunday morning (after losing an hour‟s sleep due to the clocks going forwards!) to make my way down to Wilmslow to join the 4,799 other people who had entered the 26th ASICS Wilmslow Half Marathon. Getting there early certainly paid off as the limited parking spaces at the Rugby Club soon filled up and the never ending wall of Portaloo‟s soon had queues stretching round the car park as the runners got rid of any last minute nerves. After standing round in the cold for what seemed like an eternity seeing lots of elite looking athletes making their way to the starting line it was now time to put my nerves to one side and join the masses. Despite the large number of runners I managed to find Lisa, Claire & Dawn at the start line, in total 10 runners from Swinton which is a great effort considering Coniston 14+ was only the day before. As you‟d expect for a race of its size the first few miles were fairly cramped whilst the field spread out and people got into their stride. Heading up Altrincham Road we soon turned off the main road towards Mobberley where the wide country roads were littered with people looking out of their windows or stood at the end of their drives clapping and shouting words of encouragement. The only thing on my mind was keeping my pace around the 9 minute mile mark and not hitting the wall too early. I remember running down a steep hill about the 3.5 mile mark and thinking this must be the hill that everyone had warned me about, the one which the you had to run back up at 12 miles to drain what little energy was left in your legs. With the exception of this and the slight incline at 10 miles by the church in Mobberley these were the only hills in what was a totally flat course. Over the 13 miles there were numerous drinks stations manned by the local Girl Guides & Scouts, not only handing out water but even offering tissues to wipe your face on, something I‟ve never seen at a race before but after all we were in Wilmslow!! By the 9 mile mark the sun had started to come out and the trees along the route provided some much welcomed shade. Despite this I managed to get to the 10 mile point over a minute quicker than the week before at St Annes and was feeling confident for the next 3 miles. With such a large field there was always someone to try and keep up with which came in very handy after struggling back up the hill at the 12 mile point. Unlike Lisa I didn‟t make the mistake of thinking the woman at the bottom of the hill holding out her hand was offering jelly babies – instead it turned out she was offering a palm full of Vaseline. With the crowds getting thicker and the finishing line in sight I managed to find that little bit extra and pick up the pace, crossing the line in 2:04 and welcomed by some familiar faces including Jon & Jean who had come down to spectate. The race was full of highlights, Andi Jones of Salford Harriers taking first place in 64 mins, Michelle Ross-Cope knocking 32 seconds off the ladies course record and not forgetting a great performance by all the Swinton runners. However the best bit for me was getting to see Kerry Katona‟s house on the way home! I for one will certainly be back next year.

Race Report
Southport Good Friday 4 Mile Races, Friday 2nd April It was the morning of the 2 nd of April and that meant Good Friday, according to the accounts in the Gospels, the Temple Guards, guided by Jesus' disciple Judas Iscariot, arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas received money (30 pieces of silver) (Matthew 26:14-16) for betraying Jesus, what this has to do with Chocolate Bunnies I‟ll never know but hey I digress, with the choice between the Salford 10k or the Southport 4 miler 5 plucky Swinton RC bods upped sticks and decided to lower the house prices in Southport for the morning, driving down the worlds dullest A-Road we arrived to a rather nicely scenic Park right near the sea, being near the sea that meant it was bloody freezing! The only thing doing a roaring trade at the time was the car park attendant who‟d decided that because it was a bank Holiday he could do some blatant pirating and wham up the parking prices three fold! Travelling to the park to sign in we spotted men it Pink Tights and children disguised as Spiderman, this could only mean one thing! Either I‟d not take my medication again or the day was starting with a 2 mile fun run. I was pleased to note that it was the latter! Grabbing our free T-Shirts and numbers we got ready for the race! Split into male and female woman came first and off they went, rocketing away were Carol and Lisa, our family sized duo who cleared the track in 34:04 and 40.36 minutes with stamina to spare judging by the Chariots of Fire style pictures at the end. Second up and ready to go came us men, despite realising as the starter raised his pistol that I should have nipped to the lav we headed out into Victoria Park for the first of our laps, flatter than a runway in Belgium we took a nice steady pace with Steve taking Point, mike covering the middle and myself of course bringing up the rear! First lap of the park complete we headed out to scare the general public, a quick half mile brought us back up a nice slight hill past Morrison‟s and back into the park, thanks to Lisa and Carol for catching my badly thrown cap! Another lap ensued and myself still bringing up the rear managed to reach the 2nd lap finish just in time to be barely avoid being lapped by the winner! One final time we cleared the park, passed the general public then back in for a final 800 meters dash with Mr Horton returning and providing some much needed running mantra and the Hart Family cheering I passed the finish as the last of our intrepid 5. With the Run over, all that remained was a Good Friday visit to watch the new Clash of the Titans (rubbish) and a special all you can eat at Pacifica Cantonese (brilliant)

A Saturday in Woodbank Park, 10th April Now that we have switched to the summer program and training at the track every Monday, the hardened hill addicts, plus me who just needs to work harder on them, suggested that we should try to fit in an extra session of hill training somewhere else in the week. We tried this last year on a Friday afternoon, but because of timing issues there were only ever a few who made it regularly. We batted the idea round a bit and thought that maybe a Saturday morning would be more accessible. My plea was for a different hill to the usual winter routes and since Woodbank Park has a ferocious hill (that we remember painfully well from the relay races and cross country) and is also closer to me, I pushed to try out this venue. I arrived 20 minutes early at the car park and sat watching a steady stream of people turning up in running gear. I thought maybe the local club were meeting to train, no problem we could stay out of their way. When we were handed a leaflet promoting a new running kit shop, we found out that actually, Woodbank Park is one of the venues for the Saturday morning „Park Runs‟, 5k fun runs, that attract quite a following. We decided that we could probably stay out of their way - in a 5k fun run surely they wouldn‟t be going anyway near THAT hill. As we started a warm up lap the first of the racers passed us by and the race marshal wished us luck. Not for the first time that morning we had to explain we weren‟t racing. We set off for the hill, as did the racers, OMG they did put not just one, but two laps of THAT hill in a fun run. My congratulations to the couple doing the race pushing a buggy and all of those walking up the hill who battled on and still finished the race despite appearing to be very new to running. Embarrassment at the number of times we had to explain we weren‟t doing the race eventually forced us off road and onto the cross country route. By the time we finished the minimum mileage that Lauren would tolerate the fun runners had all finished and the marshals clearing up were exhorting us to do the race next time. Woodbank Park was beautiful in the sunshine, not at all the dreary place I remember from January and the atmosphere at the fun run was great. Lauren and Adam have both been back to do the run for real and enjoyed it. I understand that Carol has also been doing regular Park runs. The Park runs are every Saturday, but there was a suggestion last year that we should pick one Saturday a month to have a mass Swinton turn out at them. Maybe we should try again?
Sarah Details of the Parkruns can be found here. Heaton Park seems to be popular with Swinton Runners with 5 runners taking part in this event.

Race Report’s
Radcliffe 10K Grand Prix Race, Sunday 18th April Set my alarm for 7.30 had cup of tea and cereals for brekkie. Got to Radcliffe for 9:30, and thought I was the first Swinton runner to arrive , but was surprised to see Sarah and Ian Thomas already there. The weather was great. Once again we had a great turnout of Swinton runners. I set off at my usual pace. Ahead of me were Lauren and Paul Rutherford who were rapidly getting smaller as they legged it into the distance. After a couple of miles we encountered a few obstacles , HILLS! At this stage, my mate Adam decided to overtake me. No problem will catch him on the straight bits (which I did). Adam and I were running along the pleasant canal paths with ease. Then we negotiated a bridge, ran up a tarmac road, after which I bombed it downhill. Now I was getting tired. Thankfully I found my Oasis WATER. I gulped this down, Adam whizzed past me - he just disappeared. Now I was into the latter stages of the race. Along the canal this elderly chap caught me up, every time I tried to overtake him he responded by stepping up a gear. Near the end of race I said cheese for Andy Coates, and then turned right to find the final lap in the field. At that moment, I saw the old chap in front of me, I always go flat out as best I can for the final few hundred yards, but I didnâ€&#x;t catch him. Better luck next year. What a great race this is.
Mike Lilley Full Results available here Race Photos available here Thanks to Andrew Coates On a warm sunny spring morning 231 runners ventured onto the new Radcliffe 10K course, it was billed as a "Brand New Challenging Course" and appeared to live up to its new name. The glorious weather and dry trails ensured that this would be a fiercely fought contest between local runners. 1st home from Salford Harriers (ex Radcliffe AC) was Ben Riddell in a quick time of 33.23. Ben led from the start to the finish and was 56 seconds ahead of 2nd place man Alastair Murray from Horwich RMI. The grand prix team of Horwich males romped home with the team prize finishing in 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 10th. Amongst the field of 231 starters were 73 ladies, 1st home for the ladies was Tess Walker from Salford Harriers in a very credible 38.01, Tess was closely followed 9 seconds later by Dionne Allen of Horwich RMI. The ladies team prize went to Wesham Road Runners who followed up there success at the recent St Annes 120 miler, finishing 3rd, 7th and 10th ladies. 230 runners finished the course and were able to relax at the finish in the sun cheering their fellow runners over the line. All in all an easy day for the Race officials as there were no problems on the new course which appeared well received by most tired runners who were glad of the water at the finish. All the best Mark Emmett Chairman Radcliffe AC

Race Report
Bolton 10K Race, Sunday 25th April After a week of glorious weather, Sunday 25th April began dull and wet – not the most inspiring start to the 9am Bolton 10K! Still feeling rather gutted about my disappointing race at Radcliffe the week before, I decided I‟d better make the effort regardless of the rain. Although there over 600 runners, the race was not too „clubby‟ and there were certainly not many of our Grand Prix rivals (Burnden, Horwich, Astley & Tyldesley) present. Four Swinton runners took part – me, Glyn, Mike L. and Steve H. Kath, who used to run for the club, was also racing, whilst Adam, Dawn and mascot Patrick gave their support. The race began at Leverhulme Park and followed a „gently undulating‟ road route around the surrounding areas, ending with a track finish. Not particularly scenic, but not unpleasant either. All four Swinton runners actually passed Steve Doxey (he was out on his Sunday morning long run, going in the opposite direction!) Glyn and I had to wait for chip timing to determine which of us was faster. After he beat me by 5 seconds at Coniston, this time I was ahead by 5 seconds. No pressure for the next race, Glyn!! I was really proud to come away with a trophy and voucher for winning my age category, but more pleased that I ran a much stronger race than the previous week.
It has not been decided whether this race will go ahead again next year as the man who organises it does not wish to continue. I think this would be a shame, as I thoroughly enjoyed the race and would like to give it another go. Let‟s hope someone else is willing to take it on. Well done to all Swinton runners and thanks to those who supported.

The Perfect Running Diet You may remember that in January Adam highlighted the need for adequate nutrition to support your training and rest regime. He wrote... “Eating for recovery is a long-term strategy, stretching from the first hour after a training session right through your rest days.” The first hour after a workout is the most crucial - your body replenishes glycogen at three times its normal rate immediately after exercise. This rate slows with every minute you waste. Try to eat a mix of carbohydrates and protein. Recovery drinks and energy bars are quick and easy options; alternatively, snacks like eggs on toast, fruit smoothies and tuna sandwiches all contain roughly four times as much carbohydrate as protein (the recommended ratio). Don‟t neglect your nutrition for the rest of the day either. It can take up to two days to fully replace the glycogen you use during exercise. Maintaining a high-carbohydrate diet, even on nonrunning days, will help build your energy stores for future running.” I‟ve been battling with the whole issue of the golden hour and what best to eat/drink during it for some time now. I know I‟m not alone in finding it very hard to eat solids immediately after training; eggs on toast just would not go down. I‟ve tried the protein build up/recovery type shakes and couldn‟t get on with them; apart from being expensive they did things I don‟t want to discuss in public to my digestive system. I looked at the shakes and smoothie recipes in Runner‟s World and most of them contained fruits or supplements I‟d never even heard of, let alone found in my local co-op. So I‟d settled on a home-made banana smoothie fortified with egg whites. A little tedious to make every day and requiring a constant supply of ripe bananas. Running alongside Mike Lilley a couple of weeks ago, I commented on his rapid return to form after a long time out with a back injury. Whereupon he let slip his secret, the answer, the perfect running diet...
Sausage rolls, 2 for 99p from Greggs dipped in tomato soup, finished off with hob nobs – the whole packet of course. A 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein, tasty, cheap and readily available, easy to ingest when struggling with solids - why hasn‟t his secret formula been patented and sold?

It was noted that we had changed the 24 hour run date to 18th June otherwise the minutes from 11/2/2010 were accepted as correct. 24 hour run now starting on Friday 18th June. Planning a barbecue after with some food etc during. Jon will try to book Charlie or a band afterwards. A list of volunteers and contact details is to be provided to Mary and she will organise meeting next Wednesday (24th). SH will put details in next newsletter. IH is in contact with Advertiser through college and will organise a press release. Social events – although the attendance was disappointing, probably due to the proximity to the quiz night, the Valentines disco made a profit of £51. The next event will be on Saturday 19th June after the 24 hour run and JM is organining the evenings entertainment Ten Mile course based on two laps of the Women’s would be short so we will need to look at a diversion possibly at the Lancaster Road roundabout or continuing to Barton Road for the finish lap and finishing from the opposite direction on Overdale. SH will look at measurement for these. JM will contact old club to see if we can use as a base for this and the Women’s run so we then won’t need the portaloos.
6
Gary Bains from Astley & Tyldesley has asked if we are interested in the challenge again this year.SD will check out dates in June/July, possibly on a Monday.
7
English Athletics affiliation fee of £50 due. ICT to arrange a cheque and SD will send with forms.
