A much asked question during 2020 was ‘will Chinese buyers be confident enough to buy from auction without being able to view’. The answer was a resounding yes. Our 2020 Asian Art sales were amongst the most successful we have staged. In an age of remote bidding we have become used to purchasers not being in the auction room, however, we now accept they may not even be in the country. Supply, of course, is declining as items return to China, never to be seen in the West again. This creates a challenge sourcing quality items to stage a sale, but does mean demand remains strong when we do. In particular, Imperial porcelain, Cloisonné and early bronzes are sought after, as are the best Japanese works, particularly by well-known makers. Contemporary Chinese and Japanese art is an active area of the market showing growth year on year, especially for works by Toko Shinoda and Liu Kuo-sung. Contact yexueli@sworder.co.uk for information about consigning for forthcoming auctions.
