Livelihood and Skill Development Chaudhary Foundation believes livelihood and skill development are the most critical elements for a robust economy of the country. Many of our rural areas and even in urban cities, employment is one of the biggest challenges. Our Program is intended to create such economic transformation to people by skilling them and creating livelihood in order to make their living standards better. The focus is on youths, women and indigenous groups and communities to pass on traditional and cultural skills while also sustaining the livelihood.
Unnati Cultural Village UNNATI (Upscaling National, Natural, Artistic, and Traditional Industries) project, an initiative of the Chaudhary Foundation, intends to cater to the sustainable development of traditional livelihood programs and women’s empowerment. UNNATI’s philosophy is the revival and survival of national heritage through various forms of arts, crafts, cuisines, and literature, encompassing the belief of life in which civilizations once thrived in culture and traditions. The essence is to bring the lost and found, old and new, back into our everyday life. Looking at the prospect of the multi-ethnic and diverse geography of the nation, UNNATI established Unnati Cultural Village as a hub for artisanal communities in Nawalpur, Gandaki Province. Unnati Cultural Village sits amidst the idyllic setting of the Devchuli and Barchuli hills of Nawalpur. Spread across approximately 54,180 square meters, the landscape and gardens give way to lush litchi and mango orchards and scenic lily ponds. At Unnati Cultural Village, arts, crafts, culture, and cuisine come together to celebrate the ethnic diversity of Nepal.
Health and Sanitation Chaudhary Foundation believes everyone has the right to good health, regardless of race, religion, gender, ability or income level. Model Village in GiranchaurTransforming the village landscape
E
ven the strongest and most influential nonprofits face barriers and challenges. For us too, Model Village has been an immeasurable learning experience. While we are striving to extend our impact further, hiccups are obvious to come our way, at times very discouraging but with collaboration with the communities, persistence and perseverance, nothing can stand still to deter the determination we set. Nepal’s 2015 earthquake casted a tragic shadow over the nation, leaving many homeless, rebuilding seemed insurmountable and Chaudhary Foundation was committed to transform at least a community through restoration. Approaching the community, especially those who are wounded by an unprecedented event, where they have lost everything, needs a lot of compassion to work with. While we chose a community in Giranchaur, Melamchi from
Sindhupalchowk district, planning and implementing a model village has been a huge learning experience for us. All authoritative constraints that came across due to Nepal’s perennial political instability triggered by the transition and community’s resilience to external force, have left us with unparalleled experience. Albeit, we were able to move ahead with our project, thanks to the community support and belief they have on us. During the implementation phase, the local community were engaged in skill development training for house construction, as a part of a sustainable livelihood program. These training sets included mansion and brick making training and plumbing that was women inclusive. As a result, 170,000 plus bricks were made by the community themselves to shape the houses and 30 plus mansions were trained. Ultimately,
62 houses were built providing shelter to 300 individuals. Likewise, to strengthen skill development among school children and reduce digital literacy gap, a digital classroom has been installed in the local community school, Shree Mahakali Secondary School. The school was provided with digital equipment including laptops, desktops, TV, projector to promote digital learning among the students who had limited access to ICT infrastructures.Overall, the village is designed to fulfill social needs of the community that constitute: quality of life, economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, social inclusion and healthy lifestyle, through livelihood and technical training support. Seeing the village transform from a shattered settlement to an integrated model village has been an exemplary project for the foundation itself. Despite the hardship we faced, we were able to support earthquake-affected communities. A collaborative effort of the government, private sector and communities can do wonders, defying all impossibilities. Chaudhary Foundation has its core commitment in fostering the communities for positive change.
Dr. Chris Elias from BMGF, visited Model Village and Unnati Cultural Village Dr. Christopher Elias who is Global Development Head of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and his team accompanied by Mr. Binod Chaudhary, Chairman and President of Chaudhary Group, paid an honorable visit to Namdolling Integrated Model Village, Giranchaur-12, Melamchi, Sindhupalchowk.
