CHOOSE WHEN YOU WANT TO START You can go to TAFE SWSi while you’re still at school, go straight from school to TAFE SWSi, from TAFE SWSi to higher education or from higher education to TAFE SWSi. COMBINING YOUR SCHOOL STUDY WITH VOCATIONAL STUDY AT TAFE SWSi With TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) you can undertake a vocational course at TAFE SWSi as part of your HSC, and get a head start in a vocation or trade. For more information, visit www.SWSi.tafensw.edu.au/tvet or ask for a copy of the TVET guide at a TAFE SWSi customer service office.
WHY CHOOSE TVET? TVET can give you: an academic transcript that counts towards any TAFE study you want to do after school, or a full certificate upon successful completion of your course
TAFE study that counts towards your HSC results and in some cases towards your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)
a statement of attainment, a certificate I or II or, in some areas (such as health, financial services and aged care), a certificate III
a head start on post-school study and employment hands-on training.
WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT STUDYING A TVET COURSE? TVET is free if you are at a government high school, so you can complete your entry-level vocational training free of charge! If you attend a non-government high school, you may be eligible for a subsidised place (ask your school for more information)
13
all your equipment, materials, protective clothing and texts are provided free by TAFE SWSi you can try out different vocational areas to help you decide what you’d like to do after school
you’ll be trained in an adult environment by highly skilled, industry-specialist teachers who are dedicated to helping you get into an exciting career
you get hands-on experience in well-equipped workshops and facilities that meet industry training standards and are used by trade students you can study things that your school doesn’t teach, at a place that isn’t school!
CAREER AND STUDY GUIDE 2015
DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN START AN APPRENTICESHIP OR TRAINEESHIP WHILE YOU’RE STILL AT SCHOOL? You can apply in Year 10 or early in Year 11 for a School-Based Apprenticeship (SBA) or a School-Based Traineeship (SBT). This allows you to work part-time and study industry skills at TAFE SWSi while you study for your HSC. The SBA is the equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, and you may be able start full-time as a second year apprentice after you leave school. Both the SBA and SBT give you a certificate of proficiency in your chosen field, which counts towards further study and employment. For more information, call us on 13 SWSi (13 7974) or visit www.SWSi.tafensw.edu.au/tvet.
STUDYING TO UP-SKILL OR PREPARE FOR A NEW CAREER Whether you’re looking to develop your skills, score a promotion or start a new career, TAFE SWSi can provide you with a world of opportunity. Here at TAFE SWSi, we are experts in helping you achieve career success! You can study a range of qualifications part-time, full-time, or at a pace that suits you with online learning.
GOING FROM TAFE TO HIGHER EDUCATION If you left school without finishing Year 12 and want to move into higher education or you want to improve your ATAR to get into the course of your choice, we can provide you with a pathway to university and higher education. If you don’t have an ATAR, our courses, including HSC studies and the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate, provide a means of entry into university or higher education. HSC studies allow you to fast-track your HSC and gain an ATAR while the Tertiary Preparation Certificate provides you with a tertiary entrance score which can be converted to an ATAR.

“TAFE SWSi offers you the most hands-on, interactive and informative educational experience you will ever get. The teachers at TAFE SWSi are always there to support you and help you succeed.” Jessica Grimma 2014 TAFE SWSi School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Certificate II in Business (BSB20112)
If you started a TAFE course and want to go onto higher education or think you might want to in the future, TAFE SWSi offers courses that provide a pathway into degrees with a range of universities. This means that once completed, some selected TAFE courses can be credited towards higher education study, so you may be able to reduce the time it takes to complete a degree. For information on all articulation arrangements visit www.tafensw. edu.au/career/ pathways/tafe_to_ university.htm or contact 13 SWSi (13 7974).
If you are already in the workforce, you may be able to have your previous learning and experience credited through RPL (see page 22).

Automotive & aircraft maintenance The automotive and aircraft maintenance industries offer a broad and diverse range of careers that provide local, national and international career paths. In the automotive industry you could work as a motor mechanic, panel beater or auto electrician, or specialise in electrical systems, body work, engine systems or heavy vehicle machinery. A career in aircraft maintenance and engineering could see you working on civil and military aircraft, using technical knowledge to diagnose and resolve problems.
TAFE SWSi is one of the largest trainers of non-military aircraft engineers in Australia and has a specialist aeroskills centre located at Padstow College.
TAFE SWSi has a helicopter simulator — one of only a few in Australia.
The automotive industry contributes $38.4 billion a year to the Australian economy bringing with it a wealth of opportunities for skilled mechanics and automotive technicians.
The automotive retail, service and repair sector is by far the largest component within the Australian automotive industry, accounting for 87% of employment. Over the next three years, the number of job openings for motor mechanics is expected to be high.
