Which qualification is right for you? At SWSi we offer many different types of education, including nationally accredited qualifications from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma, degrees, apprenticeships and traineeships
TAFE courses are accredited under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The AQF regulates the quality of all Australian qualifications, and is the nationally recognised standard for education and training in Australia. Courses are designed to be taken in sequence, as a program of study. In many programs, some of the units of study at each level are the same, which means that the courses articulate. This means that when you complete one level, you will also have completed some of the units for the next level, which is called ‘advanced standing’. There are many entry level options available, depending on your prior knowledge, experience and employment. It is also not always necessary to complete a lower level certificate to gain entry to a higher one – it all depends on you. Direct entry into a higher-level course is possible if you already have appropriate qualifications, skills or experience (see Recognition of Prior Learning, on page 23). For more information visit the Australian Qualifications Framework website at www.aqf.edu.au.

Choose when you want to start You can go to SWSi while you’re still at school, go straight from school to TAFE, from TAFE to Higher Education or from Higher Education to TAFE. Combining your school study with vocational study at SWSi With TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training) you can combine vocational study at SWSi while you’re doing your HSC, and get a head start in a vocation or trade. Check the SWSi TVET guide for more information, go online www.SWSi.tafensw.edu.au/tvet or ask for a copy at a SWSi customer service office.
What can TVET give you? An academic transcript that counts towards any TAFE study you want to do after school or a full certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The choice (with some courses) to take an examination so that your TAFE study counts towards your HSC results and your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank).
A statement of attainment, a certificate I or II or, in some areas (such as health, financial services and aged care), a certificate III.
A head start on post-school study and employment. Hands-on training.
What’s so good about studying a TVET course? TVET is free if you are at a government high school, so you can complete your entry-level vocational training free of charge! If you attend a non-government high school, you may be eligible for a subsidised place (ask your school for more information).
Did you know you can start an apprenticeship or traineeship while you’re still at school? You can apply in Year 10 or early in Year 11 for a School-Based Apprenticeship (SBA) or a School-Based Traineeship (SBT). This allows you to work part-time and study industry skills at SWSi while you study for your HSC. The SBA is the equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, and you can start full-time as a second year apprentice after you leave school. Both the SBA and SBT give you a certificate of proficiency in the area you train in which counts towards further study and employment. For more information, call us on 13 SWSi (13 7974) or visit www.SWSi.tafensw.edu.au/tvet
Studying to up-skill or prepare for a new career Whether you’re looking to develop your skills, score a promotion or start a new career, SWSi can provide you with a world of opportunity. Here at SWSi, we are experts in helping you achieve career success! You can study a range of nationally accredited qualifications part-time, full-time, or at a pace that suits you with online and e-learning, If you are already in the workforce, you can have your previous learning and experience credited through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) (see p.23).
All your equipment, materials, protective clothing and texts are provided free by SWSi.
You can try out different vocational areas to help decide what you’d like to do after school.
You’ll be trained in an adult environment by highly skilled, industry-specialist teachers who are dedicated to helping you get into an exciting career.
You get hands-on experience in well-equipped workshops and facilities that meet industry-training standards and are used by trade students.
You can study things that your school doesn’t teach, at a place that isn’t school!
In 2012, over 30% of students attending SWSi were working full time and 10% of our students were university graduates looking to improve their skills Source: TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute student profile (2010-2012)
14
While studying at SWSi, my interest in tourism and travel has rapidly increased and I will continue seeking career opportunities in the tourism industry. Completing a School Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship before leaving year 12 was a wonderful opportunity. I have gained experience and developed skills that I otherwise wouldn’t have as a year 12 student. Maddison Bracken SWSi’s 2013 Vocational School Student of the Year Certificate II in Tourism
Going from TAFE to Higher Education If you left school without finishing year 12 and want to move into Higher Education or you want to improve your ATAR to get into the course of your choice we can provide you with a pathway to university and higher education. If you don’t have an ATAR our courses, including HSC studies and the TAFE
Tertiary Preparation Certificate, provide a means of entry into university or higher education. HSC studies allow you to fast-track your HSC and gain an ATAR while the Tertiary Preparation Certificate provides you with a tertiary entrance score which can be converted to an ATAR. If you started a TAFE course and want to go onto higher education or think you might want to in the future, SWSi offers courses that articulate into
degrees with a range of universities. This means that once completed, some selected TAFE courses can be credited towards higher education study so you may be able to significantly reduce the time it takes to complete a degree. For information on articulation arrangements visit www.tafensw.edu.au/career/ pathways/tafe_to_university.htm or contact 13 SWSi (13 7974).

Are you an international student or a domestic student? You are a domestic student if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen. If you are not one of the above, you are classed as an international student. You will not be eligible for exemptions or concessions and your fees will be different. If you have a Temporary Protection Visa or are a temporary resident, your visa code will indicate whether you are permitted to study in Australia, and you may need to pay a tuition fee as well as the TAFE NSW fee. Are you an apprentice or trainee? Registered apprentices and trainees pay a capped fee of $506.00 per year or $253.00 per semester. Apprentices may be able to access incentive payments. Details can be found at: www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au If you travel over 120km (round trip) to attend off-the-job training at SWSi, you may also be able to claim the Vocational Training Assistance Scheme long-distance travel concession. If you are undertaking a graduate certificate or graduate diploma at TAFE, VET FEE-HELP is available. Some Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas that articulate into university degree can also be paid for using VET FEE-HELP.
To claim the concession fee, you will need to show your benefit documents when you enrol. Call us on 13 SWSi (13 7974) to check whether you are eligible and which documents you need to bring with you when you enrol.
If you are taking the Associate Degree in Accounting, FEE-HELP is available. VET FEE-HELP or FEE-HELP are the Commonwealth Government student loan programs for vocational and higher education that allow eligible students to defer all or part of their fees.
Do you have a disability? If you receive a disability support pension, or you have a disability and are a client of a disability consultant, you may be exempt from fees on one course per year. To claim this exemption, you will need to provide relevant documentation. If you take more than one course in a year, you will pay the concession fee for the additional course(s). Government help for study expenses When you study at TAFE, you may be able to claim Centrelink benefits such as Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance. The automotive industry is one of the largest in Australia and collectively contributes more than $35 billion to the Australian economy each year.
The automotive and aircraft maintenance industries offer a broad and diverse range of careers that provide local, national and international career paths. Building & Construction SWSi is the largest floor finishing, stonemasonry, glass and glazing training provider in NSW?
SWSi has specialist trade training centres for more than 20 building, construction and furnishing vocational areas.
Study a course in building and construction at SWSi and enjoy a career built on solid foundations! As a builder, tiler, plumber, carpenter or finishing trades person, you can help create domestic and commercial buildings, leaving a timeless mark on Australia’s urban and city landscapes.
We also have the Macarthur Building Industry Skills Centre (MBISC) which offers specialised training for people who wish to qualify for a variety of WorkCover licences and a range of pre-vocational and trade courses.
There is a shortage of qualified tradespeople in the building, construction and furnishing industries. In 2012 the government identified skills shortages across Australia in carpentry and joinery, painting trades, plumbing, wall and floor tiling and cabinetmaking.

Community Services, Beauty, Health & Fitness Would you like to help people with daily living, health and social activities, and help people look and feel their best? Are you interested in working with people with disabilities and youth, or in the areas of alcohol or other drugs, mental health, employment services, family support, protective care and counselling? If you are interested in helping those within the community, then a career in the Community Services, Beauty, Health and Fitness Industries could be perfect for you.
The implications of Australia’s ageing population are that employment shortages will become more acute in the coming decade. In 2014, employment is expected to grow 3% per annum – equating to around 181,600 new jobs. The disability carers sector alone is expected to experience over 40% employment growth in the next 10 years.
As Australia’s population ages, the Health Care and Social Assistance industry is expected to contribute almost one in four new jobs over the next five years.
There is a demand for sport and fitness professionals. In 2012, around a quarter of the Australian population (27%) participated in organised sport and physical recreation while almost double that (53%) participated in non-organised physical activity.
SWSi has hairdressing and beauty training salons at Bankstown, Granville and Liverpool Colleges. The salons are staffed by students and open to the public.

Sustainability, Laboratory & Water Operations Would you like to work in one of the fastest growing industries in the global economy, or a profession that provides an essential service to communities and industries across Australia? Do you want to work in a laboratory environment assisting scientists in fields such as environmental monitoring and testing, medicine, forensic investigation, or chemical and materials manufacturing? Sustainability, laboratory and water operations are some of Australia’s most highly valued industries. A course in these areas will set your career on the right track!
The environmental science industry is forecast to grow by at least 60% in the next five years.
In 2012 SWSi received a Silver Award in the Sustainability category of the TAFE NSW Innovation & Excellence Showcase. The award recognised the Institute’s commitment to continuous improvement in environmental sustainability. SWSi was also named a Sustainability Advantage Program Bronze Partner in 2012.
The water industry in NSW has an estimated workforce of over 13,000, many of whom are employed with state agencies such as Sydney Water or with local government.
In 2011 there were 20,500 science technicians in Australia, and 71% had full-time jobs. The average wage was $1000 per week before tax.
