Choose when you want to start You can go to TAFE SWSi while you’re still at school, go straight from school to TAFE SWSi, or from TAFE SWSi to higher education.

a statement of attainment, a certificate I or II or, in some areas (such as health, financial services and aged care), a certificate III

a head start on post-school study and employment hands-on training.

What’s so good about studying a TVET course?

TVET is free if you attend a government high school, so you can complete your entry-level vocational training free of charge! If you attend a non-government high school, you may be eligible for a subsidised place (ask your school for more information)

all your equipment, materials, protective clothing and texts are provided free by TAFE SWSi you can try out different vocational areas to help you decide what you’d like to do after school

Combining your school study with vocational study at TAFE SWSi With TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) you can undertake a vocational course at TAFE SWSi as part of your HSC, and get a head start in a vocation or trade. For more information, visit www.SWSi.edu.au/tvet or ask for a copy of the TVET guide at a TAFE SWSi customer service office.

11

Why choose TVET? TVET can give you:

an academic transcript that counts towards any TAFE study you want to do after school, or a full certificate upon successful completion of your course

TAFE study that counts towards your HSC results and in some cases towards your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)

you’ll be trained in an adult environment by highly skilled, industry-specialist teachers who are dedicated to helping you get into an exciting career

you get hands-on experience in well-equipped workshops and facilities that meet industry training standards and are used by trade students

you can study things that your school doesn’t teach, at a place that isn’t school!

Did you know you can start an apprenticeship or traineeship while you’re still at school? You can apply in Year 10 or early in Year 11 for a School-Based Apprenticeship (SBA) or a SchoolBased Traineeship (SBT). This allows you to work part-time and study industry skills at TAFE SWSi while you study for your HSC.

CAREER AND STUDY GUIDE 2015

The SBA is equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, and you will continue full-time as a second year apprentice after you leave school. Both the SBA and SBT give you a certificate of proficiency in your chosen field, which counts towards further study and employment. For more information, call us on 13 SWSi (13 7974) or visit www.SWSi.edu.au/tvet.

Going from school to TAFE SWSi Whether you’re looking to develop your skills or start your career, TAFE SWSi can provide you with a world of opportunity. Here at TAFE SWSi, we are experts in helping you achieve career success! You can study a range of qualifications part-time, full-time, or at a pace that suits you with online learning.

Going from TAFE to University and Higher Education If you want to move into higher education or you want to improve your ATAR to get into the course of your choice, we can provide you with a pathway to university and higher education. If you don’t have an ATAR, our courses, including HSC studies and the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate, provide a means of entry into university or higher education. HSC studies allow you to fast-track your HSC and gain an ATAR while the Tertiary Preparation Certificate provides you with a tertiary entrance score which can be converted to an ATAR. TAFE SWSi offers courses that provide a pathway into degrees with a range of universities. This means that once completed, some selected TAFE courses can be credited

towards higher education study, so you may be able to reduce the time it takes to complete a degree. For information on all articulation arrangements visit www.tafensw.edu.au/career/ pathways/tafe_to_university.htm or contact 13 SWSi (13 7974).

Pre-apprenticeship courses If you are unable to secure an apprenticeship, a great alternative is one of our introductory courses aimed at getting you into the area you want. These include pre-apprenticeships, pre-employment and pre-vocational courses. These courses provide introductory skills designed to help you gain entry into an apprenticeship or traineeship in a particular area. They also give you the opportunity to experience an area of study and decide if it’s right for you. For more information call TAFE SWSi on 13 SWSi (13 7974).

What are the benefits of an apprenticeship or traineeship? You can earn while you learn. Access to nationally recognised qualifications and skills that provide the basis for employment, further education and training.

Samantha Mancuso Certificate III in Business Administration (BSB20112)

As well as taking an intensive short course, you can reduce the time you spend studying and get into work more quickly by: becoming an apprentice or trainee so you can study while you work taking a course that has flexible delivery, so that you can study in the evenings or online only studying units for the specific skills you need — such as Food Safety, Work, Health and Safety, First Aid or Construction, Safety White or Blue cards using your TAFE SWSi qualifications to apply for advanced standing and credit towards a diploma or degree choosing alternative pathways into a job, such as the one year non-trade fast-track hairdressing course.

Fast track your future. Get Recognition! You can receive recognition for the skills and knowledge you have gained in the workplace or through previous study. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) Valuable life experience, work experience, on-the-job training and any courses you have previously taken, including overseas qualifications, can all count towards Recognition of Prior Learning, or RPL.

HOW DOES RPL WORK? You will be assessed on your knowledge and experience, which will be counted towards your course or qualification. That means you might not have to do all of the units in a course, allowing you to finish your qualification sooner! You will be required to provide evidence of your experience and to take part in an interview with a trained assessor.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR RPL? With TAFE SWSi you can find out before you enrol! Use our free RPL pre-enrolment tool to find out if you are eligible for RPL. Visit SWSi.edu.au/rpl or call 13 SWSi (13 79 74) for more information.

If you are found to be eligible for recognition of one or more units of competency, you’ll be able to move on with completing your course.

AUTOMOTIVE & AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE The automotive and aircraft maintenance industries offer a broad and diverse range of careers that provide local, national and international career paths. In the automotive industry you could work as a motor mechanic, panel beater or auto electrician, or specialise in electrical systems, body work, engine systems or heavy vehicle machinery. A career in aircraft maintenance and engineering could see you working on civil and military aircraft, using technical knowledge to diagnose and resolve problems.

TAFE SWSi is one of the largest trainers of non-military aircraft engineers in Australia and has a specialist aeroskills centre located at Padstow College.

TAFE SWSi has a helicopter simulator — one of only a few in Australia.

The automotive industry contributes $38.4 billion a year to the Australian economy bringing with it a wealth of opportunities for skilled mechanics and automotive technicians.

The automotive retail, service and repair sector is by far the largest component within the Australian automotive industry, accounting for 87% of employment. Over the next three years, the number of job openings for motor mechanics is expected to be high.

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION Study a course in building and construction at TAFE SWSi and enjoy a career built on solid foundations! As a builder, tiler, plumber, painter, carpenter or finishing trades person, you can help create domestic and commercial buildings, leaving a timeless mark on Australia’s urban and city landscapes.

NSW is the largest employer of construction workers with approximately 32% of construction businesses.

TAFE SWSi is the largest stonemasonry, glass and glazing training provider in NSW.

TAFE SWSi has specialist trade training centres for more than 20 building, construction and allied timber trades vocational areas. We also have the Macarthur Building Industry Skills Centre (MBISC) which offers specialised training for a range of pre-vocational and trade courses.

There is a shortage of qualified tradespeople in the building, construction and furnishing industries. By 2017, the number of job openings for building and plumbing labourers is expected to be above average.
