Abandon pregnant women are neglected by community and family, especially unwed pregnant women. They need shelter and medical support till deliver the baby.

BACKGROUND Yayasan Salam was founded in 22nd July 1997 It is a non-profit organisation It is formed to promote a spirit of volunteer service among Malaysians To provide opportunities for them to work as volunteers with Commnunities in need at home and abroad Its activities are funded by contributions from individuals corporate benefactors

As they are like a piece of stone that covered with dirt and when people saw them they only see the dirt that covered the stone and not the real beauty of the emerald under the dirt. So, love home will reveal the ability of the homeless with full of love and respect and polish them to let other people appreciate them and accept in the community.

The dining table arrange close to each other to keep interaction between homeless but still in the comfort level for individual. The table chosen in square shape to maximise interaction in the same table as the distance between each other are equal

The narrow walkway will create indirect interaction between two or more people. Harmony scenery will occur among homeless


Amphitheatre is open space for gathering and running event every week for all homeless around chow kit and Kampung baru. This space increase the communication level among homeless. This space suitable for variety of ages and they can gather to know each other and have a good connection In this area, personal bubble will decrease as the atmosphere are in casual and informal Kids personnel space, Kids dorm

All the spaces only different in preference of age group between adult and kids that stay at love home are mostly under 12 years old and at this age, they don’t really have the gap between gender.


TERRITORIALITY


PRIVATE TERRITORY The spaces consist of workshop on the ground floor, and dorm on first floor. The user’s are women and kids. As they are in a group of people that low in defensive level, the spaces are placed far from public area. Also to keep the privacy level from outside eyes

SECONDARY TERRITORY The spaces are reception, lobby, medical room, counselling room, employment assistance and mini library. On the first floor consist of musollah, recreation area and warden room, this level also label as private area as only resident and admin can access this level

PRIMARY TERRITORY Dining area, accessible to public members (homeless) this is the main space in this homeless centre. Everyday, food will be provided to all homeless and they can get the food for lunch at 12 noon to 2pm and for dinner at 6pm-8pm. After the time, no food will be given, this for to educate them to be discipline

PUBLICTERRITORY Garden area that unction as outdoor dining while they can appreciate the ature, not all homeess can adapt with formal surrounding in the dining room. So they can choose outdoor dining.

The differences of spaces can be explained trough the colour and the use of spaces, The main function of the dining area is to cater all the homeless that came to this centre to get food and eat. This space also function as a meeting place for homeless and yayasan salam to adopt them into this help centre and provide all the training for the future of successful homeless

PRIVATE TERRITORY Resident garden, located at the back of workshop area, this purpose to easily control the garden from outside people Playground that only accessible for resident. It’s to prevent any unwanted problems among homeless and outside people

PRIVACY PRIVACY The workshop area separated from public and semi-public spaces. These workshop use by the homeless that stay here and all the activities are supervised by yayasan

Privacy in term of public and semi public area can be determined by the placement of spaces and the opening provided on the spaces. In dining area, toilet and volunteer dining area are placed in the corner of the building, this is to keep the privacy from the crowding and give the feels of private in the space.

All the function room such as medical room, counselling room, conference room and employment room are divided by solid walls and doors, and placed out of activities on the lobby area. The spaces need privacy to function and less interruption from outside activities

CROWDING

Outdoor Dining to accommodate overflow homeless. Also for optional choice for eating place the ouside dining planted with big trees to provide shading area

Big opening are designed on the dorm spaces to reduce feeling of over crowded in the dorm and to provide enough lighting in the spaces that will create bigger visual. Bigger openings also design to create visual escape and visual distraction towards outside garden playground as well as to allow all the mothers keep the eyes on their child at the playground


The perimeter of the spaces are designed with big openings that allow enough light to penetrate the spaces and bring the outside view in. By this method also energy consumption on the building can be reduce as the artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation less needed. The spaces will be facing the greenery and playground that will be the place for their kids playing around, while they are training in the workshop, they still can take care of their kids from inside.

Toilet design special for pregnant woman, there Kids dorm are specially design for safety and for many of the resident are pregnant and need comfort for kids and young age, the bed are came together with drawer to keep belongings bigger space .

GENDER DIFFERENCES


GENDER DIFFERENCES At the dining area, there is 2 option for the homeless to enjoy their meal. In the dining area (indoor) or at the garden dining area (outdoor) At the Indoor dining area, female are most dominant in the area Male much prefer to enjoy their meal at outdoor dining as they can smoke after having meal and chatting among them.

As this homeless centre is designed for women and kids, in the private area, all the spaces are dominant by female. At the amphitheatre, both gender are dominant at this area

At the workshop area, only dominated by female


At the playground, mostly dominant by boys

Private garden, mostly dominant by girls. They much prefer to play under the tree


AESTHETIC


AESTHETIC FORMAL The building designed by follow the bioclimatic orientation to maximise use of natural elements. Oriented 21ď‚ş from west to north for maximum wind flow and reduce heat from the sun 21ď‚ş

The application of fan tensile roof give high aesthetic value to the building design and can harvest more rainwater to be use for ground water recharge and also to reduce storm runoff

The facade wall decorated with perforated screen and timber finish board for aesthetic and as a shading device to reduce the heat radiation trough the wall


SYMBOLIC The spaces between building designed with narrow path to increase wind speed and create cool and windy condition.

Island water pool at the centre of private garden, the water symbolised of calm and cool help the homeless to recover from addiction and also cool the air

Trees surrounded the perimeter of the building function as noise buffers to prevent noise from outside and also to soften the view. The trees also deflecting the air into the site and filter the wind.

the colour of the building only determined by the cladding, all the cladding selected with natural colour wood finish and the perforated screen painted with weatherproof paint low VOC.

At the kids dorm, the wall decorated with vibrant and keen colour as kids are full of excitement and to train their eyes towards colour light pink

On the main facade, the colour selection are in earthy tone which is symbolic of wood colour. these colour symbolized of formality and professional reflected to the function of the building

WAYFINDING


WAYFINDING The entrance of the building designed with welcoming features such as big fan roof and drop off next to the reception, outsider will naturally noticed with the features as the entrance

The entrance to the building is on the road side of lorong raja bot and that is the only alternative road. People pass trough the road will easily see the building from the road and can be recognise by the logo of yayasan salam on the wall from the entrance

Car parking are located in front of the entrance and this will help visitor to find the way into the building

People from pedestrian entrance will be guide by the path on the garden straight to the dining area and from dining area, timber decking on the perimeter of the building will guide them to the other spaces.

If there are any homeless that want to stay at this love home, they will be guided by yayasan salam employee from the administration next to dorm

DEFENSIBLE SPACES AND CRIME PREVENTION Eyes on the street, the resident of this homeless centre will act as the eyes on the space that occupied many people on the ground floor, this will help to prevent any unwanted crime on the area that may caused by other homeless

Garden light are placed at the private garden to illuminates the garden in the night time. This will prevent the area from trespassing by strangers. Crime only happened in low light condition and far from crowd, the existence of garden light will prevent all the unwanted crime and problems.


The site is surrounded by wall and the only way to access the building is from the main entrance. All the people from road and pedestrian only can access from the main entrance and this is maximise the level of safety in the building area as all people that enter the site are

under control start from the entrance

The planning is well planned with the zoning transition from public to the semi-public area and toward private, any person that not in the group of resident not allow to enter the public area without any permission from the administration. The administration will act as observer to any trespassing and also the main access to the private area. By this system, crime can be prevented in the resident area. All the activities at the amphitheatre and dining area are supervised by yayasan salam employee from the reception and kitchen
