RHYTHM VS URBAN EDGE The University of Florida Gallery for Musical Research exhibits students’ work from the College of Music, showcasing exploration of musical theory, composition, and performance. The building’s intent is to plant a UF footprint outside of the University’s campus, and be a place for students, employees, and visitors to work, practice music, study, and observe student’s musical investigations. The construct’s main features include a café, practice rooms, offices, a central atrium activating a second floor lounge, and ramps that act as a gallery space while circulating throughout the building.

The design inspiration came from the rhythms of the city itself, both implied and unimplied. This could be found in major axes, repetition in transparency, marking, etc. These “musical” variations were noted to affect the way people interacted with the city (pace, viewpoint, etc.). The goal for the gallery’s design was to bring these rhythms together and let them speak for themselves in terms of space, light, aperture, and program.

CONCEPTS/ IDEAS
When analyzing “air” at this first location in the Florida Landscape, I found three major themes. The first one was vertical movement, accompanied by horizontal rhythm. There were many areas of density in the site that were static, such as trees and foliage. However, this consistency was being reflected in the wa-
ter, where the river met the spring. Thus, I drew a connection between consistent vertical density, and consistent (and moving) horizontal density. The second theme was horizontal movement, accompanied by vertical rhythm. Again, I found a connection between rhythms/boundaries above and below ground, such
11
as temperature differences and movement of spring water. The third theme I observed was horizontal and vertical movement that are implied and are disappearing and reappearing in the site. I found this to be my most efficient response to the question “What is air?” This theme is categorized by the previous two themes,
The concept from my three themes from Madison Blue Springs soon turned into the idea of how rhythm, music, and interchangeability can be apparent in a landscape with such language. However, I was also inspired by the idea of “showcasing” the landscape, making my developed intervention an “exhibition space” as well as areas to interact with both air, ground, and water. When you approach the constructW, a small intimate space is found, used for dis-
play of information about the site. A transparent bridge connects this space, to an area to descend into the water (for kayaking, swimming, scuba-diving etc.) The bridge however, might be one of the most significant parts of this construct because it showcases above ground and below ground (shrub and water) and architecturally portrays one of the themes that were previously mentioned; horizontal movement accompanied by vertical rhythm.

hot air balloon launch site
LOCATION: Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park Micanopy, FL
SCOPE: Conceptual Design of Roof vs Ground
COURSE LEVEL: Design 5
PROFESSOR: Adeline Hofer 15
In the final reiteration of building on a Florida landscape, I aimed to focus on the idea of how air, water, and ground are exhibited and celebrated. Instead of letting the roof influence the ground, I concentrated on the interchangeability of both, and developed a program based on how the roof and the ground are influencing each other. This architectural construct is flood resistant, and inhabits large areas of shade and areas for observation in exhibition towers, a watch tower, and a screen space. The exhibition towers, with large windows facing the west, are activated at sunset when the light is shining directly inside these spaces and onto displayed photography of hot air balloons. A platformed, private space is used for a working area and sleeping pods for visitors wishing to ride a hot air balloon in the early morning at dawn, or in the evening at dusk.

light activating a construct This construct functions as an instrument, being that it uses specific musical articulations to tune the overall architectural experience. Staccato, or delicate and separated moments, allow for minimal and intentional light to be bled into intimate and private spaces, such as studying and living areas. Furthermore, these specific areas are embedded into the ground, so light cannot be as accessible to these portions of the building. However, light is highly concentrated using rhythmical, “marcato”, moments in the ritual space, which is utilized for the daily composure of music. The light that is being entered into this node creates a sense of accented “loudness”, giving an overall hierarchy throughout the project. Lastly, the long and organic, “legato” interruption mediates the variety of light by allowing diffused light and circulation to be transmitted back and forth between the study and ritual space; the living space being completely secluded.

Vertical Datum, otherwise known as “tower is set in London and programed to function as a space, for archive, observation, and performance. Inspired by Greek theater and the Shakespeare Globe Theater, my construct houses archived plays and theater writings, while also acting as a celebration for performing arts.

The colored elevations and plans were used to coordinate renderings with another firm overseas, which were used as a marketing element for The Enclave. As I did not create these renderings myself, I was part of the coordination team that made sure the colors and architectural components were within our client’s satisfaction. This was the final product.
Thank you for your patience!
