B Follow Us @ArtsNSW

hello 2014 Every January, Sydney Festival brings to our city a cultural celebration based on big ideas and bold artistic statements. The NSW Government is proud to continue to support the Festival, including delivering on our promise to bring a dedicated program to Western Sydney for the third year. This is a fantastic opportunity for Western Sydney families to attend and enjoy Festival events in this vibrant and dynamic region. This is our city in summer. Welcome to the Sydney Festival.

Parramatta has a long association with Sydney Festival. The program has grown significantly over this time and in 2014 it is better than ever, featuring an exciting array of international art, music and entertainment. I invite you to explore Parramatta during the Festival and discover the rich dining, shopping, culture, arts and entertainment options on offer. Cr John Chedid Lord Mayor of Parramatta

The Hon. Barry O’Farrell Premier of New South Wales, Minister for Western Sydney Sydney Festival proudly embraces Parramatta as its principal Western Sydney hub. Our Parramatta Opening Party is the ideal family friendly start to an exciting program with great music, fun visual arts projects and the world premiere of Band of Magicians, a brand new show with four of the hottest showmen on the planet. Lieven Bertels Festival Director Acknowledgement of Country Sydney Festival would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land that we meet on, and pay respect to the Burramattagal people of the Darug clan. We would like to pay our respects to Elders both past and present, and all Aboriginal peoples from whichever Aboriginal nation they come from.

All areas are wheelchair accessible.

As remnants of the cardboard battle are rushed off for recycling, swing past Riverside Theatres for a glimpse of Parra’s newest music club, The Lennox. Californian jazz trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire will christen the Festival club, while back on the streets you can catch the soul sounds of Bella Kalolo, and the bluesinfused folk of Ben Caplan and The Casual Smokers.

As the sun sets, Prince Alfred Park becomes the beating heart of POP with soul/funk sensation Lee Fields & The Expressions taking centre stage and keeping the party going until late. sydneyfestival.org.au/pop

MAGIC

One year ago, four of the hottest young magicians from across the globe met for the first time. On that day a new magic supergroup was born. Natural showmen, Justin Willman, Nate Staniforth, Justin Flom and Australia’s own James Galea are the faces of modern magic. Working together, their collective talents allow them to create an act that will mystify, astonish and amaze. Combining award-winning magic and mind-blowing original illusions, it’s awe-inspiring entertainment from the finest magic specialists around. A Soft Tread and James Galea production

Rubber Duck

| The Netherlands

The Duck is back. As soon as the five-storey high, yellow Rubber Duck floated into Cockle Bay last year, it became something of a celebrity. The work of acclaimed artist Florentijn Hofman astonished onlookers and gave them a new perspective on Darling Harbour. Back to play in our corner of the bathtub, we’ve invited the Duck to make a splash at duck-feeding HQ in Parramatta. SF14_ ruBBer duck.epS

The internationally renowned Slovakian artist, Roman Ondák takes familiar elements of everyday life and reframes them to surprise and delight. His installations, performances and interventions are often thoughtful and humorous, provoking you to double take what you are seeing and question your view of the world. Ondák has held numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world, including at the Venice Biennale, the Berlin Biennale and the prestigious documenta, in Germany.

project 28: Roman Ondák MEASURING THE UNIVERSE Roman Ondák’s celebrated work Measuring the Universe (2007), previously presented to great acclaim at MoMA, New York and Tate St Ives, United Kingdom, begins with an empty gallery space. When you enter an attendant equipped with a black felt-tip pen marks your height, name and the date on the wall. As the blank walls transform into a universe of marks, a common family tradition turns into a portrait of Parramatta.

SWAP

TERRACE

An undeniable favourite from Project 27: 13 Rooms, Swap (2011) merges art with everyday life. Roman Ondák selects a performer to sit behind a table like a vendor in a marketplace. The performer invites you to swap an object for the one on their table, starting an amusing chain of barter and exchange. Finally, at the close of the exhibition, the last performer takes with them the final object of the day.

Created especially for Project 28 in Parramatta, Terrace (2014) adds a very personal element to Ondák’s trio of works. Explore an exact replica of the Slovakian artist’s own terrace in his postwar Central European apartment and discover its wonderful play on perception.
