WELCOME. Sydney Festival returns to Parramatta with a program of events to get your pulse racing and your feet moving. Circolombia’s URBAN arrives at Riverside Theatre for two adrenalinfuelled weeks of mind-blowing acrobatics following seasons in London, Paris and New York, while the boys from Briefs are back with beards, burlesque and belly laughs at the Salon Perdu Spiegeltent, also home to a feast of musical talent. Don’t miss our Opening Party on January 19 as we take over the streets with free events galore, then wind up the evening with a huge free concert featuring the fabulously funky Kashmere Stage Band and Malian singing superstar Rokia Traoré. We finish our Festival in Parramatta with a family-friendly concert on January 26 featuring Lah-Lah’s Big Live Band then the remarkable Archie Roach. Visit sydneyfestival.org.au/ to find out more.

Sydney Festival in association with Arts Projects Australia presents
URBAN Circolombia UK/Colombia
The jaw-dropping acrobatics, brazen attitude and high-voltage energy of Circolombia has put a rocket under contemporary circus. Following a sell-out run at London’s Roundhouse and seasons in Paris and on Broadway, the troupe’s gritty, no holds barred autobiographical show URBAN comes to Parramatta. Set against the backdrop of Colombian city Cali, URBAN conjures the rhythm and character of dark street life and a world where life and death are inextricably linked.

With spine-tingling feats and a pulsating soundtrack, this inspiring show features an exuberant crew of highly-skilled young artists. In almost every sense the performers reach for the stars.

LEAH FLANAGAN Australia
Midnight Muses
Photo: Tajette O’Halloran
Around midnight, the world is vulnerable, and troubled minds find clarity in the dark. Musicians often meet characters who open up over a few drinks to keep the daylight at bay. Midnight Muses is a collection of songs, music and stories arranged by singer/songwriter Leah Flanagan and inspired by poet Sam Wagan Watson’s award-winning work Smoke Encrypted Whispers.
Backed by a five-piece band, Flanagan’s warm, expressive voice gives life to the characters found late at night who share tales of lost love, sporting glory and hope for the future in a captivating performance of words and music.
“Flanagan delivers these stories with such sweet and emotive music that (it’s) hard not to feel a great connection”

Lianne La Havas UK
Homespun neo-soul and scuffed folk-pop feature on 23-year-old Londoner Lianne La Havas’ Mercury Prize nominated 2012 debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough? Drawing comparisons to Lauryn Hill, Fiona Apple and Erykah Badu, La Havas cites the divergent musical tastes of her Greek father and Jamaican mother as her main influences.
With her affecting, husky croon and skill on guitar, La Havas’ charisma is at its most potent on stage, and has led to invitations to tour North America with Bon Iver and John Legend. La Havas now brings her incredible charm and talent to the intimate surrounds of the Salon Perdu Spiegeltent.
