AUDIO DESCRIPTION (AD)
Audio described shows have the visual aspects of your show described live to the audience, usually through headphones. The audio describer may be seated in a soundproof space (the bio box or separate room) and will describe the on-stage events through a live feed, transmitted via an earpiece to audience members using the service. Audio describers can also be seated in the audience as part of a relaxed performance.
Pointers For Audio Description
• Book your audio describer well in advance, especially during Festival season. We recommend a month in advance.
• Audio describers need to prepare, so provide as much information as you can, with as much lead time as possible. They will need a script and a video recording of the show so they can prepare ahead of time. If possible, they should be invited to watch a rehearsal before writing their description and given a chance to ask the creative team any questions.
Further Pointers
• Invite your audio describer to practice in the venue, either for a dress rehearsal or a performance night before the audio description session.
• Contact audio description companies for a quote early on and include it in your budget - don’t leave it to last minute! Shop around, as prices may vary. Often the quoted price includes a consultation, preparation, and the performance itself.
