Most must-do attractions are located in the city centre - or around the world-class harbour. Australia’s two most identified icons are at Circular Quay; Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. From the Quay you can also catch a ferry to Manly, Taronga Zoo or Luna Park. Between the Quay and the Bridge is the Rocks Precinct, Sydney’s oldest European settlement. The Rocks Discovery Museum is a good place to learn more about this area. Nearby Sydney Harbour YHA offers an excellent archaeological dig and the Australian Hotel some excellent local refreshments. Darling Harbour, much younger than the Rocks, was
redeveloped in the late 1980’s into an entertainment and retail quarter. Here you will find Cockle Bay Wharf, Sydney Aquarium, WILDlife Sydney Zoo and Harbourside Shopping Centre. Harbourside has an excellent range of cafes, bars, restaurants and retail shops. South of Darling Harbour is Chinatown, but just before that is the excellent ‘Ming Dynasty styled’ Chinese Garden of Friendship. Chinatown has excellent dining and shopping options including Paddy’s Markets – open Wednesday to Sunday. For more information regarding attractions, markets and museums in Sydney, go to p48-49 of this guide.

FINDING YOUR WAY
Sydney City North The Rocks and Circular Quay are the ‘colonial historic’ heart of Sydney and are great places to start exploring. Drop into the Customs House to kick off your day. You’ll also find the international icons of Sydney; the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
famous beach is just a 30 minute bus ride from the city centre. Alternatively you can catch a train to Bondi Junction, but remember you are still quite a walk to the beach. Kings Cross, Surry Hills, and Darlinghurst are all great stopping off points and are also some of the best places for going out.
Sydney’s South
Sydney’s Northern Beaches Palm Beach (is Summer Bay of Home & Away fame) is at the very top, but you will pass more than a dozen others on the way, so stop by and see a few. Sydney’s northern beaches are truly world-class. Try one or try them all on an ambitious day out. Or, like so many of Sydney’s own, move there!
Historically Redfern and Eveleigh have a troubled reputation but times are changing and arts, culture, and local festivities are bringing this bygone area to life. There is also some excellent outlet (discount) shopping further south at Green Square and Alexandria. Sydney’s Southern Beaches From renowned surfing and surfer beach Maroubra to the most southerly beach in Sydney accessible by train, Cronulla, Sydney’s southern beaches are where you are more likely to meet locals than tourists.
Sydney’s Northside
Sydney City South Darling Harbour is now an entertainment and event mecca for Sydneysider’s and tourists alike. While further south, the Chinese Garden of Friendship leads you into the Chinese district or “Chinatown” with another of Sydney’s icons at its heart – Paddy’s Markets; a great place to shop. Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs Sydney is synonymous with Bondi Beach and that’s hardly surprising as you’ll find this 6 THE WORD Australia Sydney Guide & Map
Easily accessible by ferry or bus, Manly Beach is just 30 mins from the city centre. Famous for its surf school and surf gear shopping. Come to Manly for a great day out and you might find it hard to leave. Also over here is Kirribilli and Kirribilli House – the official Sydney residence of the Australian Prime Minister. Sydney’s Inner West The Inner West’s most famous suburbs are Glebe and Balmain, known for their bohemian lifestyle, markets, and arts. But two more are fast catching up; Leichhardt with its strong Italian feel and Rozelle with its cool local vibe, an excellent indigenous art gallery and community markets on Saturday and Sunday.

speeds of around 200 km/ph. Maximum weight limits apply for skydiving, if you weigh under 95 kilograms and you’ll befine, but if you weigh over 95 kilograms, fitness and wind conditions need to be considered beforehand and you will also have to pay an additional fee. If you weigh over 110 kilograms, you are unlikely to be eligible to skydive. Once the big day arrives, wear sneakers and loose comfy clothing as tight clothes are uncomfortable when the harness is tightened. Also, if you wear prescription glasses, ask if special goggles are available you won’t want to miss anything on your float down to land! Resist the urge to have a big night before your dive.
Do your own research to find the most suitable package including price, convenience and availability of extras like videos and digital photos. You also need to think about the kind of view you want to absorb while floating to the ground. The best advice is to go as high as you can. ADVENTURE BALLOONING & FLYBOARDING Hot Air Ballooning So how does a hot air balloon actually fly? First the balloon is inflated with cold and hot air using a burner. Once the balloon is airborne the pilot cannot steer the balloon. Instead wind currents and the height of the balloon determines its direction.
16 THE WORD Australia Sydney Guide & Map
Ballooning is kind of like sailing, but through the air instead of on water. Ballooning is not always a quiet experience though - the burner can make things rather noisy! “
WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA’S OUTBACK - THE NORTHERN TERRITORY
”
Backpacking in the Northern Territory is a definite must for anyone travelling Australia – The ‘NT’ is arguably the most beautiful and impressive part of the country. Known fondly as ‘The Outback’, this is the real Australia, with dramatic landscapes unlike anywhere else on earth and experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime. The Northern Territory consists of two amazing but very different regions – the Tropical ‘Top End’ & the desert landscapes of the ‘Red Centre’.
THE RED CENTRE THE ADVENTUROUS HEART OF AUSTRALIA The ‘Red Centre’ of the Northern Territory is located right in the heart of Australia. The thriving outback town of Alice Springs is the hub for this region which includes World Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (home to Ayers Rock) and Watarrka National Park (home to Kings Canyon), along with Tennant Creek and Barkly to the North. The ‘Red Centre’ is the area of Australia that most overseas visitors usually associate with the real Australian outback for the landscape of red dirt, blue skies and boundless horizons. Watch the sun rise over Uluru, quad bike across a cattle station in Alice Springs, climb the rim of ancient Kings Canyon, jump into desert waterholes along the West MacDonnell Ranges or party the night away in an outback saloon – Experience adventure ‘NT’ style in the Red Centre, home of the true Australian outback!
“Coming here, to the Outback, it’s exactly what Australia is and what it meant to me” – Allan Dixon, Best Job in the World Winner, Ireland
Australia’s most famous outback town, Alice Springs, is the basecamp for adventure in the Red Centre. Nestled between the East and West MacDonnell Ranges, ‘The Alice’, as it’s simply known, is a modern township with a rich Aboriginal culture and European explorer history, sitting on the gateway to some of the best outback experiences.
“
ALICE SPRINGS & SURROUNDS
MUST DO’S
”
• Speed across a cattle station on a quad bike • Float over the West MacDonnell Ranges and watch the sunrise from a hot air balloon • Witness how locals tackle the challenges of outback life at the Royal Flying Doctors service
Iconic Uluru (Ayers Rock), 440 kilometres from Alice Springs, is the spiritual heart of Australia and one of the great natural wonders of the world, towering above the surrounding desert landscape to a height of 348 metres. It is one of the three great formations across the area the includes nearby Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Kings Canyon, 300km to the north-east of Uluru.
“MUST DO’S
”
ULURU & SURROUNDS
• Walk or bike around the 9.4km base of Uluru • Taste an Outback BBQ like no other under the desert night sky

THE OUTBACK
The Northern Territory is the perfect place for a working holiday. With plenty of job opportunities, working in the NT gives you the opportunity to experience a lifestyle that’s very different from the rest of Australia. Work in hospitality, retail, nursing and a stack of other industries is plentiful all across the NT.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
uluru
One of the most iconic natural rock formations in the world, Uluru (Ayers Rock) stands alone in the middle of the Australian outback. Towering 348 metres high it’s a massive sandstone rock formation (or monolith) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Aboriginals settled in the area over 10,000 years ago but
Both Uluru and nearby Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) have significant cultural significance for the local Anangu people. Uluru is notable for appearing to change colour at different times of the day, most notably at dawn and sunset. The Anangu do not climb Uluru because of its great spiritual significance. They request visitors to respect their wishes and don’t climb either.

BYRON BAY
Sport and sporting facilities are BIG in Western Sydney, you can visit the famous Sydney Olympic Park, home of the 2000 Summer Olympics and one of Sydney’s greatest venues for sporting and special events. The Western Sydney International Dragway and Sydney International Regatta Centre are also all based out this way. More tourism orientated is Featherdale Wildlife Park, home of over 2,000 animals. You can cuddle up to a koala and hand-feed kangaroos, emus, and wallabies. Other smaller animals, such as bilbies, are ideal for very small children.
Almost half of Sydney’s 4 million residents actually live “out west.” That’s about 1 in every 11 Australians. No wonder the Wanderers, the new ‘A-League soccer team’ is based out here. Apart from the Wanderers the new Australian Rules franchise for Western Sydney ‘the Giants’.

The only restriction you may have is time and money. Here’s a taste of some of the top things to do. Spill over the rapids and glide down the mighty Tully river. Grab a few mates and share the experience. cairnsrafting.com.au Diving/ Snorkelling What else can we say, but the Great Barrier Reef. One of the natural wonders of the world and visible from space. You can be a part of it either snorkelling or diving. Only a few hours from Cairns by boat, the reef appears on the horizon. Coral “bommies” break the surface and the water colour changes from dark blue to green and aqua. Underwater is a whole new experience, new life, a myriad of glinting colourful fish > and corals.

the offshore coral reef and do absolutely nothing. Heading south from Nadi, only 45 minutes by car or bus, you reach the Coral Coast. This is home to large resorts but also some excellent budget properties right on the beach. The Coral Coast is surf central. Other activities include snorkelling, stand up paddle boarding, fishing and swimming. Lovely tropical beaches, fresh coconuts straight from the trees, fresh local fruit and fish plus a coconut oil massage make this part of Fiji a haven for recharging your batteries. Stay at the Beachouse for the ultimate relaxation. This is the place to stay for the chilled out music, hammocks and massages. fijibeachouse.com Mango Bay Resort is a lovely spot to hang out and recharge. This
is an awesome experience. This must be one the best action and adventure days Fiji has to offer. riversfiji.com Uprising Beach Resort is the place to stay when in Pacific Harbour. It’s right on the beach, has quality facilities and a host of activities to choose. uprisingbeachresort.com Heading back towards Nadi, drop in to the guys at Zip Fiji and take a trip through the jungle canopy.
