GETTING AROUND Trams Services operate daily until midnight with extended hours to 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. Tram route numbers and destinations are displayed at the front of each tram and timetables are available at tram stops. Free City Circle Tram
myki ticketing myki is Melbourne’s public transport ticketing system, and uses myki cards – reusable smartcards that store credit – for travel on all metropolitan (and selected regional) train, tram and bus services. You can purchase and top up myki cards at: • any retailer where you see the myki sign. • PTV Hubs located in the city centre • myki machines at all train stations and selected accessible tram stops and bus interchanges.
Famous for its laneways, Melbourne has a host of laneways and arcades. Great pop-up shops and fashion stores are nestled beside little bars and cosy cafes. Each arcade has its own charm and character. Visit the Block Arcade for 19th century architecture, the Royal Arcade for quaint shops and the famous Gaunt’s clock.
These historic W-Class trams (Route 35) travel a circular route around the perimeter of the city centre passing many major attractions, and linking to other tram, train and bus routes across Melbourne. Trams run every 12 minutes. Free Tram Zone
Board the bus at any one of the 13 stops at key city destinations. These shuttle services run between 9.30am and 4.30pm daily. A round trip takes approximately 90 minutes and includes on-board commentary. A two day pass on the shuttle costs $10. Children under the age of 9 travel free. Free wifi on-board. The National Gallery of Victoria boasts an impressive collection among the many permanent works in its international collections. At the Ian Potter Centre, just up the road in Federation Square, is the Australian collection which includes a stunning ground floor gallery of Aboriginal works. While at Federation Square, drop into ACMI (the Australian Centre for the Moving Image) for an interactive history of film and TV, including a good old dose of Neighbours nostalgia. Check out the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art on Southbank – another architectural gem with a revolving exhibition calendar. Aboriginal history at the Koorie Heritage Trust Cultural Centre Melbourne’s markets Melburnians love a good market, and the city is full of them. Besides the Queen Victoria Market in the city, there are plenty of less touristy markets to check out across town depending on where you’re staying. Try Camberwell Market for a Parisienne flea market vibe; the Rose Street Artists Market in Fitzroy to soak up some Melbourne creativity and the St Kilda Esplanade Markets on Sunday for arts, crafs and souvenirs.

The statuesque Shrine of Remembrance, off St Kilda Rd, was completed in 1934 as a dedication to the men and women who lost their lives in WWI. It’s the site of some of Melbourne’s most important military and remembrance ceremonies such as ANZAC day. By climbing the steps of the shrine you will get fine views across the city.
