The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival takes place on the Sacred Aboriginal land of the Gadigal, Cammeraygal, Bidjigal, Birrabirragal, Darug and Dharawal people, who are the Traditional Custodians of the Sydney Basin.
We pay our respects to Elders both past and present, and extend a special acknowledgement to all LGBTQIA+SB Elders who - as part of the longest continual culture in the world - form the longest continual queer culture in the world.
We recognise the continuing connection to lands, skies, waterways and communities. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land.
THIS FESTIVAL GUIDE MAY CONTAIN IMAGES AND THE NAMES OF PEOPLE WHO ARE NO LONGER WITH US.
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Co-Chairs
For the 47th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras we continue to reflect on the impact that Sydney Mardi Gras has had for our LGBTQIA+ communities here in this beautiful city, country and world. Our festival has grown and changed, facing challenges which have seemed insurmountable, and still we thrive.
Our evolutions, our resilience and our courage come not just from within, but as a result of our communities coming together in all their glory to challenge injustice and demonstrate strength.
This year’s theme – Free to be - reminds us that who we are is worth celebrating. For well over 47 years, we as LGBTQIA+ people have taken to the streets, courtrooms and all levels of government for the freedoms we seek - Free to be who we are, to love who we want, without persecution.
For many, this journey is only just beginning. Perhaps they are introducing their families to their first partner, or using their new pronouns at work. For many more though, as we approach our 50 year anniversary, Free to be has been a lifelong battle, fighting for the rights we enjoy today, ensuring we keep those rights, and setting the stage for the victories of tomorrow. That is worth celebrating.
Our 2025 Festival will be a celebration of us. We hope to see pride on full display across a packed program of events and in defiance of the discrimination, exclusion and bigotry that is still demonstrated around the world. From the return of Fair Day presented by American Express, to the legendary global icon that is the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade and every community arts event, dance party, history tour, play and musical in between, we encourage you to bring your best self, and celebrate with us.
It is a pleasure and a joy to welcome you to Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, where you are Free to be.
Brandon Bear (he/they) | Mel Schwerdt (she/her) CO-CHAIRS — SYDNEY GAY AND LESBIAN MARDI GRAS
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras CEO
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is more than a festival, each year thousands of people from across the globe flock to Sydney as the city comes alive. It is true magic – built on a 47-year legacy of the insurmountable and unstoppable power of our LGBTQIA+ communities.
I’m incredibly proud to welcome you to the 2025 rendition of the biggest LGBTQIA+ celebration in Australasia.
The 2025 Festival keeps the spotlight firmly on our communities, with 2024 additions First Nations First Light: A Festival Welcome, Hot Trans Summer and Ultra Violet back again. We’re excited to join hands with City Recital Hall to welcome the return of Blak & Deadly: The First Nations Gala Concert and introduce a new queen on the block Taylor Square Takeover presented by American Express – a revamp of the beloved Diamond Club, giving Parade-goers a totally new block party experience.
The team and I cannot wait to return to Victoria Park for Fair Day presented by American Express, the incomparable all-day extravaganza for every corner of our communities to enjoy.
The calendar has had a mini makeover, with the middle weekend of the festival cementing itself as a can’t-miss moment with back-to-back events Kaftana Pool Party, Hot Trans Summer, Laugh Out Proud, Ultra Violet and Paradiso Pool Party
The festival wraps up with the 47th annual Sydney Mardi Gras Parade, before we dance the night away at Mardi Gras Party with a final hurrah at Laneway
With a jam-packed calendar from 14 February — 2 March, I am so grateful to be part of such a hard-working team that brings our magnificent festival to life alongside our collaborators, communities, partners and thousands of dedicated volunteers. We hope you take the spirit and memories of the 2025 theme Free to be with you forever more. Happy Mardi Gras!
Gil Beckwith (she/her) CEO — SYDNEY GAY AND LESBIAN MARDI GRAS
Minister for Jobs, Tourism, the Arts, Music and the Night-time Economy
On behalf of the NSW Government, welcome to the 2025 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras!
Now in its 47th year, the Mardi Gras has grown from a human rights protest to a global pride icon that showcases the best of Sydney.
This year’s Mardi Gras will deliver an exciting program that showcases our city’s diverse and creative communities and the breadth of Sydney’s culture during the day and after dark.
The NSW Government is working hard to rebuild a vibrant 24-hour economy that supports music and entertainment in our venues and on our streets. Mardi Gras exemplifies this vision like no other event.
Mardi Gras also reminds us of the history of the LGBTQIA+ community in Sydney. Learning from this history is important, which is why the NSW Government supported a permanent home for the Qtopia Sydney Museum at the former Darlinghurst Police Station. What had been a site that represented repression has now been transformed into a place of storytelling and education.
I wish everyone a safe and happy Mardi Gras.
The Hon. John Graham MLC (he/him) MINISTER FOR JOBS, TOURISM, THE ARTS, MUSIC, AND THE NIGHT-TIME ECONOMY
Lord Mayor of Sydney
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival is one of the most anticipated events on the Sydney calendar to celebrate LGBTIQA+ pride.
This year’s theme, Free to be, reminds us to embrace and celebrate individuality and encourages bravery. It’s about taking the opportunity to always champion LGBTIQA+ equality and human rights.
When we work together to promote respect, understanding, diversity and inclusion we all emerge stronger and we make progress.
Now in its fifth decade, Sydney Mardi Gras is as relevant and provocative as ever.
The City of Sydney has a very long history of supporting the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and we’re proud to celebrate the iconic community festival in 2025.
I look forward to welcoming you to our amazing city and celebrating this important event.

Sissy Ball is going MAINSTREAM and you are not ready... the biggest vogue ball in Australasia soars to new heights as vogue families from across the country battle it out at the first mainstream ball Down Under and under the Ball’s new curator: Kianna Oricci.
Watch as walkers find their home on stage, join thousands chanting their calls and prepare yourself for a night of drama and sensation. Born to bridge a bond with houses in Aotearoa, Legendary Mother of Australian Ballroom Benji Ra brought Sissy Ball to the Sydney Mardi Gras scene in 2018. Now recognised as a global stage for the excellence, embodiment and fantasy of the ballroom scene down under, the Ball’s second curator Godmother Kilia took it to new heights.
The Ball’s latest inheritant Kianna Edisane “Oricci” is the Australian Mother of the International House of Nina Oricci and the trailblazing Mother of the Naarm Kiki Scene. Grounded in the art forms of street dance and Ballroom, Kianna’s practice centres around trans and POC political art, and under her reign Sissy Ball 2025 will be a mainstream scene ball - which is the most serious and prestigious scene as it is where ball culture all began.

“I’m 36, I’m a comedian, and I’m about to kill my boyfriend…”
After years of swiping, a permanently single, professionally neurotic stand-up finally meets Mr Right – and then does everything wrong. Strap in for a delightfully dark journey through self-awareness and self-sabotage as he decides whether love is worth the price of a killer punchline. This darkly comedic one-man show delves into the anxieties of modern life with razor-sharp wit, tackling everything from the fear of intimacy to the terror of vulnerability. As the protagonist (Samuel Barnett) grapples with his own paranoia and insecurities, audiences are taken on a journey that is as hilarious as it is relatable.
This show is the “razor sharp” (Scotsman) hit play written by Marcelo Dos Santos (Backstairs Billy), staring Tony and Olivier-nominated Samuel Barnett, from the producers of the Olivier award-winning Baby Reindeer and the international smash-hit Fleabag, directed by Olivier award-winner Matthew Xia.
★★★★★ ‘The gag-count is ridiculously high’ Telegraph
★★★★★ ‘Faultless execution is matched only by this audience’s thunderous, cathartic, cry-laughing response’ FEST
★★★★ ‘Barnett’s performance illustrates how he has mastered the delivery, timing and register of a seasoned observational comedian’ The Guardian
★★★★★ ‘A masterclass in comic delivery’ WhatsOnStage

Enter Strange Phenomena, howl with the Hounds Of Love and dance on the moors with Wuthering Heights. Kate's not there, but you are. This award-winning cult cabaret pays glorious tribute to the music, fans, and mythology of one of the most influential voices in pop music.

QUEER MATERIALS
Queer Materials presents diverse LGBTQIA+SB textile artists that narrate queer experiences through their practices and utilise methods of queer archiving to communicate aspects of their queer experience. Textiles are an important part of queer storytelling, having the ability to embody histories both personal and communal. Clothing and objects present opportunities for self-expression, while the making process itself can be an important communal and cultural practice - providing occasion for connection and exchange.
Artist and activist Derek Jarman (1942-1994) is one of the most important and influential figures in twentieth century British culture. As an early campaigner for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and people living with HIV and AIDS, he created art that sought to challenge the normative culture and reigning neoliberal politics of his (and our) times. The exhibition will be open 14 February – 4 May 2025.
HEAD OVER HEELS: THE MUSICAL
Head Over Heels:The Musical is a hilarious, queer musical comedy set to iconic hits like “We Got the Beat,” “Vacation,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” made famous by The Go-Go’s—the most successful all-female-identifying rock band of all time. It is pure camp, and an unapologetic celebration of queer joy in all its forms. Produced by The Regals Musical Society, a community theatre with 80 years of history and a proud LGBTQIA+SB membership.

Sydney CBD
EAT AND DRINK
Sydney’s CBD isn’t just the glamorous home to many award-winning fine-dining options, it’s also a hub for caffeine, cocktails and casual bites. Try A.P Place (bold and innovative), Humble (classic) or Wholegreen (gluten-free) for baked goods, while Skittle Lane, Diggy Doo’s and Gumption are classy caffeine stops. Midden by Mark Olive is the place to go to try native produce by a celebrity chef. A bougie night out starts with drinks at rooftop bars Aster or Jackson’s on George. Then continue onto luxury Mediterranean bistro Palazzo Salato, the plush pink furnishings and playful menu of Penelope’s or Euro-inspired bar-bistros Clam Bar and Bar Morris. Level up with internationally applauded fine diners Quay or Oncore by Clare Smyth

See a mesmerising performance by world-renowned First Nations dance company Bangarra and catch everything from popstars to local theatre at the Sydney Opera House. Dance to live music at the century-old Marble Bar or to the beats of a touring international DJ at Civic Underground. The Sydney International Art Series brings the world’s most outstanding art exclusively to Sydney at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Art Gallery of New South Wales. Scaling the 134-metre-high Sydney Harbour Bridge summit is a bucket-list ticket while in town.
Darlinghurst and surrounds
EAT AND DRINK
Potts Point’s sibling cafes Piña and Room 10 demonstrate exactly why the suburb is a dining hub: they’re two of Sydney’s best. If you’re staying local for the evening, Vermuteria serves vermouth and Spanish-esque plates, aperitivo bar Piccolo Bar dishes up Italian snacks alongside amaro and Caravin provides an intimate Parisian-style dinner. In neighbouring Darlinghurst, down a beer and a Chinese snack at The Taphouse; or match a cocktail to the colours of the sunset on the rooftop of historic gay club The Colombian. You’ll also find the original outpost of Sydney icon Gelato Messina, art community hangout Cafe Freda’s, and Buffalo Dining Club highlight: pasta finished off in a giant Pecorino wheel (for dinner). In Surry Hills, Armorica (Parisian brasserie) and Nour (innovative, glammed-up Middle Eastern) are also options.
STAY
Oxford House on Oxford Street is a stylish, relaxing oasis with a glistening pool and rooms outfitted with eclectic artwork, Grown Alchemist bathroom products and Double Rainbouu robes. Down the road in Surry Hills is the Sydney Design Awards gold medal-winning Paramount House Hotel. Within the 80-year-old building you can also catch a classic film at the Art Deco Golden Age Cinema, get a shaken iced coffee and textural salad at Paramount Coffee Project, have a rooftop pastry at A.P House or sip natural wines at Poly.

PLAY
Darlinghurst is the heart of Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ community, and Oxford Street is where most Sydney Mardi Gras revellers will find themselves at midnight. Stonewall and Universal are key pitstops for pop hits and heaving dance floors. A few doors down is Palms on Oxford, a dive bar attracting diverse crowds with disco, ‘80s hits and ‘90s pop. Live music venue Oxford Art Factory supports up-and-coming and experimental artists, and next door’s Cliff Dive is a tiki-themed, R&B and EDM bar-club. Goro’s in Surry Hills is the spot for karaoke and Japanese snacks. During the day, shop Australian labels in Paddington or, if you’d prefer to explore the area with a guide, wander through Qtopia (the largest museum and cultural centre for queer history and culture in the world), or join The Fabulous Wonder Mama on a walking tour of Oxford Street.
Bondi
EAT AND DRINK
Bondi’s award-winning Icebergs Dining Room and Bar matches the surrounding beauty with simple yet sophisticated Italian dining. Along the beach, you’ll meet a more casual Italian eatery Makaveli, French bistro and bar ChouChou, and Promenade Bondi for bistro meals with L.A. vibes.
STAY
Boutique hotel chain QT’s Bondi iteration is a block from beach, laidback but luxurious and has rooms featuring pops of colour and plush robes. Get closer to the waves with the flamingo pink Hotel Ravesis, the only Bondi hotel with beach views.
PLAY
Take a surf lesson with Let's Go Surfing and, afterwards, stroll 6km of cliffside pathway past enticing swimming spots on the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk. Change pace with an infrared or traditional sauna and ice bath at Slow House, Bondi’s stylish wellness centre, or join the locals at the Icebergs sauna.
Newtown and surrounds STAY
EAT AND DRINK
Newtown’s King Street is a famous Sydney ‘eat street’. Start at Ante, a sake bar serving bold-flavoured innovations, Comedor is bending the genre of Mexican cuisine, Bella Brutta serves up-market pizza and Cafe Paci is the only Finnish-ish fine diner in Sydney. For a snack, try artisanal gelateria Mapo and a pide in the Turkish hub (Konak or Taste of Turkey are great picks). Drinks-wise, stop in at queer-friendly, drag-showhosting Newtown Hotel or the cosmically themed martini specialist Bar Planet.
In Enmore, you’ll find Lebanese diner Emma’s Snack Bar, sports bar The Magpie, and the eccentric Jacoby’s, which mixes a tiki theme with natural wines and a rum-heavy menu. There’s also bustling local falafel hot spot Cairo Takeaway, cute Japanese bakery Azuki and classic cafe Soulmate, which serves an excellent cuppa and breakfast sandwich in between the two ‘burbs.
Straddling the Inner West and the CBD, Chippendale’s The Old Clare Hotel is an elegant, welcoming and character-filled boutique hotel (you don’t need to stay to check out its rooftop pool and bar). Further into the Inner West, The Urban in Newtown offers industrial-chic rooms in the centre of everything.
PLAY
Made immortal by The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Erskineville’s The Imperial and its Drag ‘N’ Dine shows is an essential Sydney Mardi Gras stop. Up the road is the Enmore Theatre, the longest-running theatre in NSW and champion of iconic Australian acts and international talent alike. The area is also home to a barrage of vintage clothes and homewares stores. If all you want to do is sing Céline Dion songs with other Titanic fans, then book into Titanique at The Grand Electric in Redfern.

Sustainability
A world-class Festival needs to put the world first. Sustainability is at the forefront of all decision-making at Sydney Mardi Gras, here are some of the ways we’re minimising our environmental impact:
• Event-wide ban of non-biodegradable glitter, balloons and confetti.
• Prioritising suppliers and collaborators that align with our sustainability practices, are actively reducing their carbon emissions and using renewable energy through our rigid procurement processes.
• Prioritise the avoidance and reduction of resources that turn into waste, reusing as much as possible and increasing our recycling and organic rates.
• Collaborating with our sustainability partners to identify and implement recycling opportunities at Sydney Mardi Gras signature events, resulting in over 10.69 tonnes diverted from landfill for recycling and reuse during the 2024 Parade alone.
• Advocating for environmental awareness and practices with all our partners and suppliers.
• Minimising our use of plastic products across the Festival.
• Expanding our partnerships Ethical Charter to assess and score new partners and suppliers on their sustainability practices.
This Festival Guide is printed on MIX paper from responsible sources.
How to be a green Festival-goer:
• Use compostable glitter and confetti.
• Make your Festival looks eco-friendly by wearing sustainable materials such as organic cotton and bamboo or consider hiring or thrifting something second-hand.
• Ensuring that your outfits are secure and embellishments or particles such as sequins do not fall off onto the ground as litter.
• Take advantage of the free water refill stations across the Festival and bring your own reusable water bottle (individual event conditions of entry still apply).
• Don’t litter and be conscious of using the bins correctly, including recycling, compost and general waste. If necessary, please separate your rubbish into the associated bins.
• Carpool, take public transport, walk or cycle to events. Check the Transport for NSW website for details and transport options. For specific details on how to get to the Parade, visit the Parade event page at mardigras.org.au.
