A MESSAGE FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ~

Well... Here I am, sitting at a desk I had grown quite used to sharing, and it strikes me that the year to come at STC is full of determined individuals and blissful single-mindedness. A season of characters with big ideas, big ambitions and – occasionally – very big noses. Proboscises notwithstanding, the wonderful thing about 2014 is that we’ll see elements of ourselves reflected in these characters time and time again. Because, in the theatre, no character is an island, even the most isolated or bloody minded. No matter how tight the spotlight, no matter how introspective the soliloquy, a stage without an audience is a rehearsal. And so, to the audience. You. To those happy fools on stage, you are the strong shoulder in every hour of need, the witnesses to every glorious victory and the smiling farewell as they exit, pursued by that bear. To guide us along the way this year, we’ve assembled a masterful array of playwrights dishing up a season of benchmark texts. From the clockwork mastery of Noises Off to the puzzling audacity of Perplex, from the creeping thrills of Switzerland to the sublime romance of Cyrano de Bergerac, there’s not a genre left unturned.

Photography by Lisa Tomasetti

First cab off the rank is David Williamson’s Travelling North. As lively, honest and immediate today as it was 35 years ago. In fact, age has not wearied so much as burnished a play that stands as my own favourite in Williamson’s formidable back catalogue.

Speaking of back catalogues, Cyrano de Bergerac has become a hallmark STC text and it promises once again to be a sumptuous night in the theatre with Richard Roxburgh donning the schnoz. We also welcome back Justine Clarke, Jacqueline McKenzie and Helen Thomson – all in the one show, Children of the Sun, a neglected gem by Maxim Gorky which I adapted last year as a commission for the National Theatre in London. And to ice the cake... Hugo Weaving. Macbeth. This is the Shakespeare play that opened my eyes in high school; the one that shook me out of adolescent torpor and set me squarely on the path to theatre. Watching a talent like Hugo let loose on a monster like this is going to be an absolute treat. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating this ragtag bunch of individuals. Alone, they are full of great drama. Together, we hope to make great theatre.

Andrew Upton Artistic Director

TRAVELLING NORTH By DAVID WILLIAMSON

Williamson’s autumn sonata Frank is a bugger, but somehow Frances has fallen for him. They happily leave chilly Melbourne for tropical Queensland, seeking warmer climes and a change in lifestyle, to the horror and inconvenience of their children. Soon, however, their dream faces a new threat: signs of age betray themselves in Frank’s failing heart. Meanwhile, Frances’ daughters demand her return, if only to care for their ever-growing broods. Travelling North premiered in 1979 at The Nimrod Theatre, with John Bell directing Frank Wilson and Carol Raye. It swiftly became an important play in the Australian canon. This, its first ever production at STC, brings Williamson’s affectionate, insightful play, with its nosy neighbours, sexagenarian raunch and family wrangles to the intimacy of Wharf 1 Theatre. Following 2011’s ZEBRA!, we welcome Bryan Brown back to the STC stage as charming rogue Frank, while Greta Scacchi – not seen on STC stages since her star turn in Simpatico, 1996 – returns as the delightful younger Frances. The Fury team bring this Australian classic to life with elegant simplicity.

“ I may be old. I’m not defunct.” Frank

NOISES OFF By MICHAEL FRAYN

A tour de farce From Wilde to Orton, via Benny Hill, English comedy has trodden a fine line between the incisively witty and the earthily broad. Of course the greatest does both, at the same time, and with extra sardines. Enter Noises Off. Michael Frayn’s comic masterpiece reveals the goings-on as a Z-list touring theatre company attempts to mount the somewhat dire bedroom farce, Nothing On. With a deft comic touch, as seen in his play Australia Day and countless Wharf Revues, Jonathan Biggins directs a highly accomplished cast led by Marcus Graham as the despotic director, and including Genevieve Lemon, Tracy Mann and Ron Haddrick – a collective that will ensure that behind the pratfalls and missed cues is a craft so precise you’ll not know where reality ends and the play begins. Will two separate love triangles, a dipsomaniac and lost contact lenses prevent the show from going on?

FIGHT NIGHT

Created by The Border Project and Ontroerend Goed with text by Alexander Devriendt and the Cast

Only one will survive We first encountered the maverick Belgian theatre company Ontroerend Goed when they performed the enthralling Once and for All We’re Gonna Tell You Who We Are so Shut Up and Listen in 2009. We enjoyed it so much we got together with them in 2012 to create the tiny epic A History of Everything which then toured to Europe, the United States and Perth International Arts Festival. Now they’re back – along with Adelaide company The Border Project, which also collaborated with us in 2011’s Vs Macbeth – in a brand new interactive theatre experience. Five contenders. Five rounds. You choose. Employing high octane performance and innovative hand-held voting technology, Fight Night is a playful and immersive night of theatre. While your vote may reflect the personalities on stage, the process will be just as revealing about yourself. How fast do you judge or condemn people? Based on what? In a society where beauty prevails and even the world of politics is not safe from the cult of celebrity, director Alexander Devriendt has created a clever political game, treading a fine line between democracy and the tyranny of majority.

“ A cross between Big Brother and an Italian election.” The Independent (UK)

The Border Project is assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, and the Government of South Australia. Ontroerend Goed is funded by the Flemish Community, The Province of East Flanders and the city of Ghent.

PERPLEX

By MARIUS VON MAYENBURG TRANSLATED BY MAJA ZADE

A shape-shifting theatrical puzzle Taking inspiration from Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, as well as the pens of Stoppard, Nietzsche and Beckett, influential writer Marius von Mayenburg has created a fast-paced and very funny piece of contemporary absurdism. The four actors play musical chairs with their characters in an astonishing tumble of scenes. Their characters are patchwork individuals, groping for assurance and security in a constantly disintegrating reality, while slipping on the metaphysical banana peels von Mayenburg throws in their path.

Rock ’n’ roll ’n’ revenge

MOJO

BY JEZ BUTTERWORTH

Jez Butterworth’s brutally funny journey through the seedy, amphetamine-fuelled London rock scene of the 1950s follows a gang of would-be power-players who, seduced by the promise of fame and fortune, battle for control of hot teen singing idol, Silver Johnny. In the hands of director Iain Sinclair (Our Town, Blood Wedding) Mojo is a tightly-wound thriller which examines with grim humour the dark underside of the halcyon days of rock ’n’ roll. A sensational collision of Tarantino-esque shock and Jacobean revenge, the story starts with the discovery of a jealous nightclub owner’s body sawn in half... and then things start to get sticky.

The generation gap just got tighter M.Rock is a magical new play, based on a true story, about the enduring joys of music, dancing and self-discovery. Lachlan Philpott is one of the country’s hottest writers, rocketing into the Sydney theatre landscape with the success of Silent Disco for atyp and Griffin Theatre Company in 2011. In his distinctive language, Philpott charts the fortunes of 18-year-old Tracy and her grandmother Mabel. Tracy has just finished school, she’s bought a round-the-world ticket and is flying away to soak up experience. By contrast, Mabel is stable. She plays piano for The Players, knits for the African appeal and looks after Hilda’s cat.

Love is the drug When people fall in love we often talk about the ‘chemistry’ between them. But what is this ‘chemistry’ and what causes it? In The Effect, acclaimed British playwright Lucy Prebble incisively examines the world of drug-testing clinics and neuroscience. And, perhaps, true love. Two young volunteers, Tristan and Connie, take part in a drug trial examining the effects of a new anti-depressant. However, as their doses become stronger, they start to fall in love. CHILDREN OF THE SUN by Maxim Gorky in a new version by Andrew Upton AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE

Love and other chemical reactions Following on from his adaptation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, Andrew Upton’s new adaptation of Maxim Gorky’s Children of the Sun takes a fresh, colloquial look at the human condition. In a rambling mansion in provincial Russia at the beginning of the 20th Century, a sister, a brother, their partners and admirers pursue their intimate intrigues oblivious to bigger new realities brewing at their door. A family born to privilege but bound for dysfunction. Protasov might be the man of the house, but, even when he lifts his eyes from his chemistry set, he is blind to his wife’s infidelities, his friend’s advances and his sister’s quiet despair. In something of a casting coup, three of our most treasured actresses – Justine Clarke (Les Liaisons Dangereuses), Jacqueline McKenzie (Sex with Strangers) and Helen Thomson (Mrs Warren’s Profession) – form a formidable trio around our hero, as outside the propulsive energy of revolution reaches a crescendo. Both a sparkling comedy and a thoughtful exploration of the larger issues of privilege, progress and being caught at the wrong end of history, Children of the Sun captures the atmosphere of upheaval of its era – with more than a fleeting resonance to our own troubled times.

Highsmith’s taut prose, macabre scenarios and ambivalent moral stance – in her world, the villains enjoy happy endings as often as their victims – made her one of the 20th Century’s most compelling and enigmatic crime novelists. Many of her books made it onto the silver screen – from 1951’s Hitchcock version of Strangers on a Train to 1999’s The Talented Mr Ripley, directed by Anthony Minghella. The tables are turned in Switzerland and it is Patricia herself who is the central character, brought to life by the wonderful Sarah Peirse. True to its genre, Switzerland kicks off with a knock at the door – before spiralling into a grim and lively contest of wits, words and wills.

PINOCCHIO

BASED ON THE BOOKS BY CARLO COLLODI created by Rosemary Myers with writer Julianne O’Brien

A rollicking revision of the classic tale of a wooden boy with a nose for trouble Once there was a lonely man with lots of love to give. He wanted a child so much that he carved himself a beautiful little boy. But the boy wanted the world – adventure, fame and the latest designer sneakers. He wanted more than his father could possibly give, and so he ran away to get it. This is his story. The classic tale by Carlo Collodi is given a 21st Century spin and retold as a witty, rocking, music theatre spectacular; a mix of old time theatre fun and a celebration of the ‘whatever’ generation. For kids brought up on Australian Idol, this fable of conscience and belonging is given a new dimension by the talented Windmill Theatre team that created Wizard of Oz (2009) and multi Helpmann Award-winning School Dance (2013). Rosemary Myers directs a wonderfully physical performance from Nathan O’Keefe as Pinocchio, and School Dance favourite Jonathon Oxlade charms us as Cricket. This beautifully designed show is guaranteed to be feel-good fun for all the family.

THE WHARF REVUE 2014 Written and created by Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott

Time has not wearied them Everyone’s favourite lampoonists return in their 15th year for a special edition of The Wharf Revue packed full of their trademark irreverent, anarchic political satire. Jonathan Biggins, Amanda Bishop, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott bring us another all-new, up-to-the-minute dose of their keenly observed comic sketches. Look out for some of your most – and least! – loved public figures as they are paraded in all their glory for your delectation.

Folly

Featuring an array of characters for you to identify from a carefully-chosen line-up of heroes and villains, fools and wits, clowns and crazies that have been strutting our political stages. Keating, Gillard, Howard, Hawke, Rudd and Abbott and many more. This brilliant blend of side-splitting sketches and musical mayhem never fails to amuse. Vicious, malicious but most of all delicious.

WHAT YOUR DONATIONS SUPPORT ~

48

Theatre is a people and skills-intensive industry, and while ticket buyers cover an incredible 64% of STC’s annual operating budget, that alone cannot cover all the costs of a production. Even after base subsidies from the Federal and State Governments and sponsorship agreements, we still need to secure an additional 18% each year to deliver our program. The bulk of this amount is made up through donations and the added support we hope to receive from people who appreciate what we do. So thank you. We look forward to continuing to make great theatre with you.

While some larger gifts help to get us over the line, last year 44% of the donations we received were under $50. We know that the cost of a Season Ticket is a significant commitment. But if you like what you see, please consider giving a small additional gift in support of STC.

Throughout the brochure you may have noticed this button. It designates programming choices that were made possible through the generosity of our donor family.

For more information please contact Philanthropy Coordinator Lucy Howard-Taylor on (02) 9250 1715 or foundation@sydneytheatre.com.au You can also give online at sydneytheatre.com.au/donate 49
