A MESSAGE FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ~

The 2014 season is full of characters with big ideas, big ambitions and – occasionally – very big noses. This program is full of accessible, challenging and sometimes cheeky theatre for young people. These productions not only contain strong curriculum connections, but should provide incredible learning and life experiences for your students. This year, we’ve assembled a masterful array of playwrights dishing up a season of benchmark texts. From the lively and honest Travelling North to the pure joy of Pinocchio, from the creeping thrills of Switzerland to the sublime romance of Cyrano de Bergerac, there’s not a genre left unturned. Cyrano has become a hallmark STC text and it promises once again to be a sumptuous day in the theatre with Richard Roxburgh donning the schnoz.

And to ice the cake. Hugo Weaving. Macbeth. This is the Shakespeare play that opened my eyes in high school; the one that shook me out of adolescent torpor and set me squarely on the path to theatre. Watching a talent like Hugo let loose on a monster like this is going to be an absolute treat. We’re very excited to be enhancing our significant commitment to teacher professional learning through School DramaTM, the Arts Conference for Educators and other programs. This is where teachers and artists work together, sharing their expertise and use theatre and drama to improve student outcomes. We hope you enjoy all that our 2014 season has to offer and I look forward to welcoming you and your students to our Company.

A rollicking revision of the classic tale of a wooden boy with a nose for trouble Once there was a lonely man with lots of love to give. He wanted a child so much that he carved himself a beautiful little boy. But the boy wanted the world – adventure, fame and the latest designer sneakers. He wanted more than his father could possibly give, and so he ran away to get it. This is his story. The classic tale by Carlo Collodi is given a 21st Century spin and retold as a witty, rocking, music theatre spectacular; a mix of old time theatre fun and a celebration of the ‘whatever’ generation.

CHILDREN OF THE SUN BY MAXIM GORKY IN A NEW VERSION BY ANDREW UPTON AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Director Kip Williams Set Designer David Fleischer Costume Designer Renée Mulder Lighting Designer Damien Cooper With Justine Clarke Jacqueline McKenzie Chris Ryan Helen Thomson Ben Winspear

Love and other chemical reactions In a rambling mansion in provincial Russia at the beginning of the 20th Century, a sister, a brother, their partners and admirers pursue their intimate intrigues oblivious to bigger new realities brewing at their door step. A family born to privilege but bound for dysfunction. Protasov might be the man of the house, but, even when he lifts his eyes from his chemistry set, he is blind to his wife’s infidelities, his friend’s advances and his sister’s quiet despair. Both a sparkling comedy and a thoughtful exploration of larger issues of privilege, progress and being caught at the wrong end of history, Children of the Sun captures the atmosphere of unease and upheaval of its era – with more than a fleeting resonance to our own troubled times.

The nose that launched a thousand quips In wordplay and swordplay, Cyrano de Bergerac has no peer. By arrangement with our friends at LA’s Geffen Playhouse, who commissioned Switzerland, we are excited to present this very original thriller inspired by Patricia Highsmith, renowned novelist best known for her fictional creation con artist Tom Ripley. The tables are turned in Switzerland and it is Patricia herself who is the central character, brought to life by the wonderful Sarah Peirse (Fury). True to its genre, Switzerland kicks off with a knock at the door – before spiralling into a grim and lively contest of wits, words and wills.

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS

SCHOOL DRAMA ~

School DramaTM is a professional development program for primary school teachers which demonstrates the power of using drama pedagogy with quality literature for improving English and literacy in young learners.

STC partners each participating teacher with a teaching artist over a school term and together they explore how drama strategies can be integrated into any area of English and literacy, such as narrative writing, speaking and listening or comprehension. The process begins with a daylong professional development workshop. This is followed by a series of planning sessions, focused on tailoring a team-teaching program to meet the class’ individual learning goals. PROGRAM PARTNER

The artist then comes to the school over seven weekly sessions and team-teaches the program with the teacher, modelling the drama strategies and empowering them to carry these ideas into their regular teaching practice. Developed over a four-year pilot program in partnership with University of Sydney and leading academic, Professor Robyn Ewing, School DramaTM is designed to increase teachers’ confidence and capacity in using the arts as a teaching tool. This in turn improves literacy outcomes in primary students. Ongoing research and evaluation of School DramaTM has shown a range of positive outcomes for teachers at any stage of their careers as well as for their students. STC would like to take the chance to thank our close group of dedicated major donors who have enabled us to develop this initiative into a successful pilot program. If you are interested in joining this program, we strongly advise you to register your school’s interest early in Term 4 2013. Yes! School groups are welcome to book for any performance with discounted youth prices available at all performances excluding previews and Saturday evenings. There is limited availability and payments for all tickets need to be made in full at the time of booking.

School groups can subscribe to all STC Season performances. For school subscriptions enquiries, please contact education@sydneytheatre.com.au

Does the cost include GST? STC Ed tickets are GST exempt. GST only applies to the inside booking fee and not the total ticket price. Any applicable GST will be listed on your invoice.

What time does the performance finish so I can book a bus? Estimated times are listed in this brochure. Running times may change during rehearsal, so please check our website for the exact duration closer to your performance date.

Q A Q A Q A

Can I change my student numbers? Yes. Changes to booking numbers must be received in writing and can be accepted up until six weeks prior to the performance. Changes to student numbers after this time will depend on availability and are at our discretion. This may incur a change fee.

Is there somewhere to park our buses? For performances at Sydney Theatre or The Wharf, buses can park on Hickson Road opposite Pier 4. Smaller buses and coasters would be eligible for on-street metered parking.

Is there any nudity or strong language in the production? Sometimes STC productions contain adult material, but this can’t be confirmed until rehearsals commence. We offer a guide in this brochure, but if you would like further assistance please contact education@sydneytheatre.com.au or call (02) 9250 1778.

WARNING! CHECK EACH SHOW PAGE FOR RELEVANT WARNING INFORMATION.
