Sports classics are elevated with relaxed tailoring, and boxy silhouettes. Integrating lounge styling into day-to-day dressing. Core styles are elegant in their simplicity, and upgraded with sustainable fabrics and casual performance materials, turning them into investment pieces designed to last a lifetime. The longer-line silhouette protects and cocoons the wearer as increased importance is placed on rest and recovery to aid optimal performance; blurring the lines between performance wear and fashion. Wearing high-end sports clothes becomes a new status symbol, it’s never been cooler to look like you’re moments away from a workout.

Over the past few years we’ve seen flourishing streetwear scenes emerging all over the world. Through harnessing the power of social media, fresh and innovative designers are able to take their visions to the global stage, at the touch of a button. Labels like Gosha Rubchinskiy and Ader Error have become increasingly alluring to Western consumers because they translate familiar “With labels such as Vetement’s and OffWhite gaining increasing global hype for high-end streetwear, the look is one that seems to show little signs of slowing” –

A seamless convergence between the real and the virtual, as the line between people and technology blurs, active wear sees an increase in seamless, wearable technology. Combined with composite constructions and intense, shades, creating a new, take on colour-blocking. Colours appear saturated and artificial, heightened in off-kilter pairings, and used on performance fabrics made from recycled waste.

Award-winning company StretchSense has developed wireless sensors that integrate into apparel or can be applied to the body like a second skin. The lightweight sensors flex with the body, transmitting motion information in real time. A sweat-sensitive textile coating has been developed, ,that provides a warning of dehydration and and indication of internal health, changing through a spectrum of colours from blue, indicating well hydrated, to yellowy brown indicating dehydration.

Over the years, activewear has evolved and gone beyond its more obvious uses and environments. As the lines between the streetwear and catwalks are progressively being blurred, the fashion industry and its customers alike have been massively benefitting from this successful contamination that has no intention to stop. More recently, journalist Noor Tagouri created the streetwear clothing line ‘The Noor Effect’ along with designer Adam Khafif, with the aim of donating 50% of profits to anti-human trafficking charity, Project Futures.

In a society where it’s time for a change, particularly in global politics. New York fashion week showcased designers who used the platform to voice their views. Plastered on basic tees the powerful message becomes the focal point. Combined with wit, they take an interesting turn on a serious topic. T-shirts are the vehicle, emblazoned with statements of solidarity and unity in bold sans-serif typefaces.

Aquafil, now recycles fishing nets and unwanted textiles into regenerated yarns for use as carpet or fabric. The company has spearheaded an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic ocean trash and “ghost gear, and works with nonprofits and aquaculture companies to collect unwanted plastic equipment to churn into new textile fibers, which it brands as Econyl. The company in turn says it can collect those garments made from its fibers, recycle them again and continue the closed-loop recycling process.

Prints are flamboyant and graphics are daring, with playful bold detailing and heavy outlines. A collection of quirky gems emerges, from insects to strong geometrics, combining the old with the new. Embroidered back placements is a key application for these eclectic graphics. Creating a harmonious balance between maximalism and minimalism, this collection creates statement patterns and bold graphics that bring simple silhouettes to life.

When Alessandro Michele took over from Frida Giannini, we were presented a wealth of ideas. A blend of geek-chic, with solid Gucci accessory references, but amplified; from colour to decoration, frills and glitter, shine, sequins and embroidery which dazzled down sheer garments. Mui Mui AW12 collection took frock coat shapes over cropped tailored trousers - and swirled in Seventies colour and print. Piled up with glam rock influences, rainbow shine eye embellishments and slicked back hair.

Fig.80 In an ever growing world of technology, increasingly lived through screens, Leaf It Indoors taps into our ever growing desire to re-connect with nature. A raw beauty underpins this theme, explored through unpredictable colour, geological pattern and free-form structure. The traditional aesthetic of nature becomes refined and contemporary. Props and fixtures are accented with wood and bark, honed into engineered forms and surfaces, enhancing natures true forms.

The linear growth patterns in this trend wrap around and outline sculptural forms, as seen in Anish Kapoor’s Imminence sculpture and Cody Hoyt’s hand-marbled ceramic vessels. Taking inspiration the cast resin works of Peter Alexander and Michelle Stitz, which capture elements of nature under the surface.
