about syo

Sydney Youth Orchestras is the leading orchestral training and education provider in New South Wales. It was founded in 1973 by the visionary music educator and conductor, Peter Seymour. Since then it has grown to become a community of hundreds of young musicians, aged 6-24, from all over Sydney and beyond. We gather weekly for rehearsals in many different ensembles carefully constructed to match skill, age and experience.

how are we run?

Sydney Youth Orchestras is a not-for-profit incorporated association overseen by a volunteer board that meets on a monthly basis. SYO’s daily business is conducted by the Board’s management team and music staff.

sydney youth orchestras board Jan Bowen AM – Chair Anthony Bell – Deputy Chair Ursula Armstrong Geraldine Doogue AO Tim Downing Wallis Graham Greg Levy Malcolm Long AM Jon North Pieter Oomens The Annual General Meeting is held in June each year and all members, parents and guardians are welcome to attend.

Stage One is where many young players gain their first ensemble experience. In this Stage, young musicians are introduced to playing in an instrumental section and learn vital ensemble skills. Through exposure to music with a range of technical requirements, players in Stage One will develop rhythmic and tonal skills and learn to interpret basic dynamic and style markings.

orchestras

orchestral fundamentals program

Students in Stage Two are introduced to increasingly complex orchestral concepts and refine the skills required to effectively and confidently sight read, progressively master challenging rhythms, and interpret musical markings with deeper stylistic understanding.

Stage Three offers intermediate players the chance to further develop their ensemble playing while extending their technical and aural skills. These musicians will discover a range of increasingly challenging and engaging repertoire, demanding technical proficiency, superior ensemble skills and a sophisticated knowledge of style.

Stage Four is the springboard to the Symphonic Orchestral Program. Players in Stage Four explore core repertoire from the baroque to late romantic periods, requiring a mature understanding of orchestral playing and strong technical skills. Stage 4 will also undertake Symphonic Projects with Wind, Brass and Percussion musicians from the Symphonic Wind Orchestra. In 2019 our Orchestral Fundamentals Program Conductors are Dr. Irina Andreeva, Kathryn Crossing, Joanne Waples, Peter Corkill, Rachel Pogson, Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich and Jonathan Whitting. _ 5

The Western Sydney Youth Orchestra is a thriving youth orchestra based in Parramatta, NSW. In addition to having weekly rehearsals and instrumental tutorials each term, WSYO frequently collaborates with dance companies and cultural groups, makes festival appearances, tours and takes the stage at special events around Western Sydney. Under the leadership of respected music educator and conductor, James Pensini, Western Sydney musicians focus on the essentials of orchestral playing and performance, tackling repertoire ranging from the Baroque to Romantic periods.

the sydney youth orchestra

SYO’s most senior orchestra, lead by SYO’s chief conductor, Alexander Briger AO. Since 1973, it has been the training ground for Australia’s future professional musicians, and its alumni can be heard in every major orchestra in Australia. The Sydney Youth Orchestra provides outstanding and intensive training and performance activities that lead to the continued development of a musician’s technical and artistic excellence. Programs are broad ranging, including chamber music, orchestral music from the Classical, Romantic and Contemporary traditions, as well as new works by Australian composers.

sydney youth chamber orchestra

2019 sees the re-establishment of Sydney Youth Orchestras resident chamber ensemble, SYCO (Sydney Youth Chamber Orchestra). Led and programmed by acclaimed Principal cellist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Umberto Clerici as Artistic Director, this ensemble will provide the most elite and advanced young musicians in the SYO family the opportunity to engage with complex repertoire, artistic collaborations, new commissions in alternative performance spaces and bespoke events. The program will often feature key SYO alumni providing an avenue for ex-SYO musicians now emerging as professional artists to maintain a connection with the organisation.

SYCO is an invitation only ensemble, based on the project and repertoire requirements. _ 7

where

Symphonic Orchestral Program members (SWO, PSO, WSYO, SYOP, SYO) can access practise parts online via their Musician Portal. Tutorials are small group rehearsals where players divide into their separate parts (eg violin 1, cellos, woodwind). Tutti rehearsals are when the families combine into the full orchestral ensemble. Tutorials are unique: players are mentored by Sydney’s best and most experienced orchestral musicians and professionals, many of whom are SYO alumni. Members learn the crucial skills of orchestral musicianship. Tutorials are irreplaceable in orchestral training and an absent player cannot replace them with individual practice.

instruments

SYO understands that the purchase of instruments is a huge investment by a musician’s family. As such, SYO recommends that families put in place the appropriate insurances to cover your child’s cherished instrument. SYO cannot accept any liability for damage to or loss of an instrument at SYO activity.

Parramatta Town Hall is a 2-minute walk from Parramatta Station. As a main transport hub, buses also travel to Parramatta from North, North West and Western suburbs. _ 13

attendance

All SYO players will have their attendance marked at weekly rehearsals. Any unexplained absences will be followed up by SYO Staff during rehearsal time, directly following the marking and collection of the roll. SYO has duty of care for all musicians during activity time and must be aware where all students are at any given time during rehearsals, concerts, camps and tours. Attendance at rehearsals is vital for the orchestra to develop and play properly. SYO will make every endeavour to give as much notice as possible of rehearsal schedules and to change them as little as possible. participants are expected to: • Ensure that they know their rehearsal schedule and have checked for any changes or updates within 24 hours of each rehearsal and/or concert

• Seek permission at least two weeks in advance of the activity, from the Operations Staff (not the Conductor) if they are unable to attend scheduled activity. This is done by completing the online Absence Form located on the SYO website. Please note agreement to requests of this nature is not automatically guaranteed and will be treated on a case-by-case basis • Text the SYO mobiles prior to the commencement of the activity and advise of their situation if they are arriving late. They should always apologise to the conductor if they are late for an activity • Members aged under 18 years are not permitted to leave the premises during their break unless accompanied by SYO staff or approved volunteers without explicit, prior permission from their parents or guardians.
