DAY 3 | FRIDAY 12 APRIL 2019 2ND OF 3 NIGHTS IN CARDIFF CARDIFF In the morning we have a guided tour of fascinating Cardiff Castle, one of the oldest castles in Wales, dating back to Roman times and reflecting the history of many periods since then. On a 3rd-century Roman fort, Norman invaders built a motte and bailey castle in the late 11th-century. Through time a medieval castle and a Victorian Gothic revival mansion were added. During World War II the Castle’s tunnels were used as air raid shelters. The early afternoon is free. You might wish to rest after yesterday’s long journey, or you might consider exploring Cardiff further. Proclaimed the capital of Wales in 1955, Cardiff is a port city on the Severn Estuary. Its waterfront has been revitalized and is an exciting and attractive place to visit. At Mermaid Quay there are shops, bars and restaurants, and if you feel like a walk you could visit the Wales Millennium Centre, home of the national opera, orchestra, theatre and dance companies, and stroll to the nearby Senedd, a strikingly modern building, which houses the Welsh National Assembly. In the afternoon we travel by private coach to Swansea. Together with the SYO we have an early dinner and then attend a concert by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at Brangwyn Hall. This is a concert venue named after artist Frank Brangwyn, whose magnificent “panels”, originally intended for the House of Lords, are exhibited here.

You might consider a relaxed stroll in Castlefield Urban Heritage Park, with its casual waterfront bars, green spaces, beautiful views of canals and fascinating historical connections. It is the site of the Roman fort of Mancunium, which gave its name to Manchester. A section of the fort’s wall, its gatehouse, granaries, and other ancillary buildings have been reconstructed and are open to the public. The park also has connections to the Industrial Revolution, such as being the terminus of the Bridgewater Canal, the world’s first industrial canal, built in 1764 and being the site of the oldest canal warehouse, which was opened in 1779. There are other exciting places to visit in Manchester according to your particular interests, such as the National Football Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Lego Museum. In the early afternoon we travel by private coach to London. On arrival in London we check into Hampton by Hilton, conveniently situated just a 10-minute walk from London’s Southbank. The city offers riches in museums, galleries, shopping and more, and you may have your own particular interests to pursue, but the following is a suggestion for an interesting walk: Start from the St Paul’s Cathedral side of the Millennium Bridge, then enjoy the views of London as you cross the Thames. The Tate Modern and the reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe are on the southern side of the bridge, to visit or just admire as you stroll by. Turn left and wander along the Thames Bank until you reach Borough Market, a great place to find a coffee, a meal and a fascinating and picturesque collection of market stalls all under cover. You can browse, visit Southwark Cathedral and then if you continue your walk along the Southbank, cross iconic Tower Bridge. You can then visit the Tower of London, or just take in the picturesque district before returning to your tube station and hotel. In the early evening we travel by private coach to the Barbican Centre, and enjoy dinner together with the SYO.

Here the great baroque composer, George Frederic Handel, lived from 1723 to 1759, composing works such as Messiah, Zadok the Priest and Music for the Royal Fireworks. A visit offers an insight into Handel’s life, and into 18th-century music and culture. This afternoon we have the unique opportunity to sit in on a rehearsal in which the SYO play side-by-side with members of the Philharmonia Orchestra as they prepare for this evening’s concert. The Philharmonia has an exciting and revolutionary approach to the role of the modern-day symphony orchestra, using learning and participation programs, and digital technology to engage new audiences. Through its flourishing international touring programme and global digital reach, the Philharmonia reaches a world-wide audience.
