TIME TO DISCUSS CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES HE Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy, talks exclusively to the ADIPEC Show Daily

policy that the Ministry of Energy is mandated to construct; and the support we get from ADNOC and the other investors in the sector is highly appreciated. These efforts will be maximised during the remainder of this year and next year. From another perspective we are also excited with the commissioning of the new production of the Shah sour gas project operated by Al Hosn Operating company.
We are so proud of the success of ADIPEC in the last three decades; especially this year, as it becomes probably the world’s largest oil and gas conference gathering, and the second largest exhibition. The increasing number of participants indicate the importance of the event in linking the different oil and gas industry stakeholders together to discuss and exhibit solutions to the challenges we face.
Are we moving toward sustainable energy at a pace you like?
The theme is ‘Challenges & Opportunities of the next 30 years’. What do you see as the challenges and opportunities? I believe the time is critical to discuss the new challenges and opportunities facing our industry from a rather longer-term perspective; to be able to ensure sustainable development and diversity. Certainly, at ADIPEC, the high level of participants encourage such discussions to take place. Are we on target to hit the 2017 target of 3.5m bpd? Yes. The target production capacity is on plan, but we need to remember that this capacity is needed to provide flexibility on the short term, and fulfill the country commitment in the medium to long term including the growing local demand.
HE Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy
How is the UAE managing supply and demand? The UAE is a reliable supplier with a strong track record of reliability and credibility, and we are looked upon by our traditional consumers as a partner of choice. Therefore, our priority in supply goes to these markets and we look forward to keeping our market share intact. For this, we share with them a multifaceted partnership and investments. What is the most impressive aspect of the UAE’s oil and gas industry in 2014? We are proud of the role the oil and gas sector is playing in shaping the UAE energy
I think the pace is less than what it should be but I remain optimistic, as we have seen the cost of generation this year dropping further. I think it’s becoming competitive for PV solar when you compare it with LNG gas. There are several projects currently in the bidding phase; we hope to see them announced soon. What about unconventionals such as shale? You mentioned last year they are not perceived as a threat. Has your opinion changed? In the past four years shale oil helped in balancing the supply and demand and as it continues to be produced at high levels, it affected the oil price negatively and we need to see if this effect is long or short term. On the gas front, we still didn’t see the impact and we will see it more when the shale gas from the U.S. and Canada start getting to the LNG market.

President, North East Bab (NEB) Asset at the Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), the ADIPEC technical conference this year received 1,806 abstracts, a 61 per cent increase from last year, from which 486 were selected. Around 50 per cent of the abstracts received came from the Middle East, with the remainder from across the globe. “In addition to the 84 technical sessions, which will be presented by 480 speakers from 37 countries, we will have four dedicated academic sessions for the first time in the history of ADIPEC,” Mr Abdulla said. “We have truly witnessed remarkable growth, not only in the number of submissions, but also in the quality of papers being presented. This achievement, from receiving only a handful of submissions when ADIPEC first launched, to becoming one of the world’s largest energy shows in a span of 30 years, demonstrates our significant global recognition.”

LOOKING TOWARDS A BRIGHT ENERGY FUTURE His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) welcomes you to the 17th ADIPEC, the 30th Anniversary edition
B
ack in 1984, an enthusiastic young group of ADNOC engineers got together at the InterContinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi to discuss the current state of the oil industry and its future. That was the first ADIPEC. Not in their wildest dreams could they have anticipated their humble meeting would be the start of what is now the second largest oil and gas event in the world. As these young engineers showed three decades ago, we must anticipate future energy needs and prepare for them. ADIPEC has become our annual opportunity to share industry expertise and skills with all of our global stakeholders, partners and industry peers. ADNOC has pledged to increase crude oil production capacity to 3.5 million barrels per day by 2017, reaffirming our commitment to meet global growing demand for energy. The ever-increasing need for sustainable energy sources must be balanced with dedication to issues of health, safety and the ever-increasing field of eco-awareness, where the UAE continues to make great strides at an international level.
HE Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, Director General, ADNOC
Today, we look forward to a bright energy future, and ADIPEC 2014 represents the chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the next 30 years
ADIPEC provides the forum to discuss these issues with industry players from across the globe. Today, we look forward to a bright energy future, and ADIPEC 2014 represents the chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the next 30 years, as we all reflect on the successes of the last three decades since ADIPEC began. ADNOC, in co-operation with its partners, is proud to have created an integrated industry covering the oil, gas, refining and petrochemical sectors. We are also proud to co-host ADIPEC, which is now seen as a truly global event, and one that this year is attracting more exhibitors, more speakers, delegates and visitors than ever before. Every year we see opportunities realised and new challenges met, just as ADIPEC continues to rise to the challenge of ensuring it is the world’s benchmark for industry events. And while ADIPEC sets the bar for global oil and gas events, ADNOC will continue to raise the bar higher for development of the oil and gas sector in Abu Dhabi for the coming years.

n May 22, 1984, the UAE Petroleum Technology Conference convened for the very first time at the Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Initiated by ADNOC, the conference spanned three days and was attended by 200 oil and gas professionals with just 24 papers presented and discussed. Fast forward 30 years, and the 2014 edition of what is now known as ADIPEC has come of age, emerging as one of the world’s top three oil and gas events, and the second largest oil and gas conference in the world; two milestones which have come about as a result of organiser dmg event’s careful organic growth of ADIPEC since 2006. Combining both an expanded floor plan to cater for the demands of exhibiting companies and a thirst for knowledge via the conference programme, the 30th Anniversary of ADIPEC is the biggest edition in its history, and we are proud to extend a warm welcome to all our attendees as we gather to celebrate this momentous milestone. As you explore the venue this year, you will see first-hand the growth and scale of

In tandem with this exceptional growth, recognition of the region’s innovation and expertise has never looked more promising, with a record breaking 390 submissions for the ADIPEC Awards. Reviewed and independently judged by a 26-strong committee of industry heads and experts, this year’s Awards is a reflection of the growth opportunities across the wider MENA region, and underlines the global importance that the city of Abu Dhabi plays as an international energy hub. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support and guidance received from the UAE’s Ministry of Energy, ADNOC and the Abu Dhabi Chamber, who along with all our committees, sponsors, partners, exhibitors, visitors, delegates, suppliers and staff, have contributed to the growth of ADIPEC over the years. We welcome you all and extend our sincere thanks for making ADIPEC the destination of choice and new meeting place for oil and gas professionals.

FAREWELL CHRISTOPHE DE MARGERIE Industry mourns ‘statesman and titan’ of the energy sector
T
he halls of ADIPEC are tinged with sorrow this year following the death of Christophe de Margerie, the larger-than-life Total CEO who bestrode the world of energy and more and who died recently in a plane crash in Moscow. Affectionately known as ‘Big Moustache’ among colleagues and the media for his trademark facial hair, he was on friendly terms with numerous heads of state, especially in the Gulf, where sincerity and personal relationships count for everything. “Nothing replaces human warmth and handshaking,” he once told the newspaper Le Monde. “You don’t win a contract by telephone.” French President François Hollande, a friend of Mr de Margerie, expressed his “stupor and sadness” at the tragic news. In a statement, he praised Mr de Margerie for defending French industry on the global platform, and for his “independent character and original personality.” Total staff worldwide paused for a minute’s silence in tribute to a boss who was a friend to them all. The Total Board said in a statement: “He dedicated his brilliant career to the development of the Group, enabling its glowing success in the oil and gas sector and more recently in solar energy. The exceptional human and professional qualities that Christophe de Margerie exhibited during his time at Total were largely responsible for the success of the Group.” Born into a family owning part of the Taittinger Champagne house, Mr de Margerie became an international figure thanks to another valuable liquid – crude. Mr de Margerie started working for Total in
He was not just a manager. He was walking goodwill 1974 after receiving his degree because, he joked, its HQ was close to his home. He spent his entire career at the oil company, moving up the ladder from his first job in the finance department to become CEO in 2007, adding the role of Chairman in 2010. INDUSTRY LEADER Although Total was already an industry leader when Mr de Margerie was named CEO, he won drilling contracts to secure the company’s growth prospects in places such as Qatar, Kurdistan, Myanmar and Russia. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to President Hollande expressing condolences and calling Mr de Margerie “a true friend of our country.” As head of the Middle East division, from 1995 to 1999, Mr de Margerie earned the trust of the region’s leaders and succeeded
brilliantly in the job. He won one of his most significant contracts in 1997, when he obtained the right to exploit the South Pars gas field from the National Iranian Oil Company, one of the largest gas projects in the Middle East. Mr de Margerie had just left an investment conference attended by Prime Minister Dmitri A. Medvedev and was returning to Paris when his plane collided with a snowplough on take-off. At the conference he had argued forcefully that Western oil companies should continue their engagement with Russia. “Christophe was a larger-thanlife character, a leader respected across the energy industry and a friend,” Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden said. He was quick-witted but no-nonsense. He was at ease with the media, as reporters who cover ADIPEC know well. He would answer the toughest questions direct, no side-stepping, and when news conferences were over he would ensure that reporters got one-on-one interviews, not just huge networks but anyone who pulled out a notepad or tape recorder. “He took things to heart,” Maurice Lévy, CEO of French advertising company Publicis Groupe , said on French radio. “He was not just a manager. He was walking goodwill.” The colourful executive earned his place as both a statesman and titan of the energy industry. Few negotiators have boasted his daring, skills and success. He was a reminder of what passion and commitment can achieve. And above everything, he was an oil man. Christophe de Margerie is survived by his wife, Bernadette, the vice president of a nongovernmental organisation that aids orphans, and their children, Laëtitia, Diane and Fabrice. A CENTURY OF SUCCESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST Interview with Michael Townshend, regional president, BP Middle East
C
What do you offer to Middle East national
an you provide some context about energy demand and supply in 2013 and the projection for 2035? There is strong consensus among energy economists that energy demand will grow between now and 2035 – the only question is by how much. In 2013, according to the BP Statistical Review, demand for energy grew by 2.3 per cent despite a relatively weak global economy. It’s growing faster than in 2012 (when it grew 1.8 per cent) but slightly below the historical average. Our view is that the world will need around 40 per cent more energy by 2035. That is a little less than the growth in the past two decades - which was close to 50 per cent but it is a formidable increase. To meet that demand, energy companies from around the world will need to go to new frontiers, maximize recovery from mature fields, and deliver new major projects. What is BP’s history and involvement in the Middle East? BP has been working in the Middle East for over 100 years. This has included making major discoveries in Iran in the early 1900s, helping to develop super-giant fields in Iraq between the 1930s and 1970s, and discovering oil in Abu Dhabi in 1958. Today, we continue to seek opportunities to find, develop and produce essential sources of energy to deliver long-term value in the region. Tell us about BP’s investment in the Middle East Over the last 5 years BP’s footprint in the Middle East has been transformed through three key developments (1) the re-entry into Iraq, with the Rumaila contract in 2009, (2) the sanctioning of the Khazzan project in Oman in 2013, and (3) our continued partnerships in the UAE. In Iraq, we continue to ramp up investment as we re-develop Rumaila, Iraq’s largest oilfield and the second largest oilfield in the world. This $60+ billion project is expected to produce over 13 billion bbls with a peak production of over 2 million bpd. In just over 4 years, we have managed to produce 2 billion bbls at Rumaila – very few oil fields in the world ever produce this many barrels, let alone in 4 years! We have also recently started assisting the Government of Iraq on a project in Kirkuk, in Northern Iraq, by studying the possibility of increasing production from that historic field.

Today, we continue to seek opportunities to find, develop and produce essential sources of energy to deliver long-term value in the region In Oman, we are progressing a significant opportunity with the launch of the $16 billion Khazzan Project. Since 2007, we have invested over $1 billion in the Block 61 concession. The Khazzan Project will provide new gas supply to Oman on a significant scale. The full field development of the resource was sanctioned in late 2013 and will involve drilling around 300 wells over 15 years with first gas targeted in late 2017. Finally, we continue to invest in the UAE – a country where we have been proudly investing for over seven decades. Our relationship with the United Arab Emirates goes back to the early 1930s, when Air BP established a refuelling depot in Sharjah to serve the first airplanes en route from the UK to India. Since then, we have had joint venture partnerships with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and have held shareholdings including in the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company and Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Limited. We are also actively investing in the community in the UAE – from our founding support of the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development, to our support of the Abu Dhabi Petroleum Institute, to the launch the BP Young Adventurers Programme, which takes thousands of teenagers on leadership training courses.

world’s largest fields, ranging from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, Samotlor in Russia, and Rumaila in Iraq. BP’s tight gas technologies have also unlocked the potential of complex reservoirs around the world – from the US to Algeria. BP has distinctive technology and experience, global scale and management expertise, and a commitment to building close partnerships. Together, this allows us to unlock reserves from mature, giant oil fields and from unconventional tight gas reservoirs BP is breaking new ground in technology and applying this capability in the Middle East. Technology areas include enhanced oil recovery and giant field management in Abu Dhabi, and drilling, fracturing and reservoir stimulation in Oman. What is the role of the international oil companies to achieve a 70 per cent recovery rate in Abu Dhabi? International oil companies have a large role to play. We bring world class management expertise, innovation and cutting-edge technology which helps increase production and meet recovery targets. Technology at BP is at the heart of everything we do and a critical enabler in helping us to find and recover hydrocarbons. We apply our technologies at scale across our portfolio. BP is world-class in managing and redeveloping giant fields and is the biggest operator of giant waterfloods in the industry. This experience has allowed us to develop the deep expertise and innovative technologies needed to increase recovery factors and extend field life. BP is also a leader in developing and deploying enhanced oil recovery techniques such as low salinity water injection (LoSal EOR and Brightwater for Enhanced Oil Recovery methods to boost recovery from maturing fields. We are bringing this expertise to help meet the challenges of maintaining and increasing production from assets in the Middle East.

l Mazroui Engineering, a sponsor of Young ADIPEC, is committed to encouraging UAE youth to enter the oil and gas industry, as well as generating awareness of the importance of nationals across the country’s workforce. This was stressed by the UAE company’s managing director Wael Agha, as he outlined Al Mazouri Engineering’s blueprint for bringing young people to the forefront of the oil and gas industry. Agha says: “It is very important to support youth in order to transfer the knowledge and experience gradually. Supporting youth is also an integral part of our social responsibility commitment. It is one of our main objectives to encourage youth to believe in their dreams and improve the future. It is our role to guide them in life.” Young ADIPEC is clearly a case in point, hence Al Mazouri Engineering’s keenness to lend its name and support to the innovative concept. Young ADIPEC was established to address the need for more young people to be part of the next generation of oil and gas industry employees. Bolstering interest and excitement about a career in oil and gas, last year’s ADIPEC saw school children take part in a series of field trips, projects and a visit to the museum and Young ADIPEC zone at the event. The Young ADIPEC Engineer Award category aims to recognise an individual who has just started a career in the gas and oil industry and has less than four years of experience, during which s/he has demonstrated a great deal of potential as a future team leader. “It is very important for the future development of any country to have its

It is very important for the future development of any country to have its nationals working in all fields and sectors of its economy nationals working in all fields and sectors of its economy,” says Agha, adding that the perpetuation of traditions also centres on education. He pointed out that the late UAE president, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was fond of saying, “Sophisticated nations are judged by the level of their population’s education.” Nationalisation is part of the overall picture, according to Agha who says it “secures the
identity of the country and provides guidance” for its overall plans. Meantime, Al Mazroui Engineering is inviting young visitors to ADIPEC to experience an interactive platform along environmentalfriendly guidelines – “basic production, support of life and progress of civilisation.” “We are determined to make young people understand that the oil and gas industry is a huge part of the surrounding environment day by day with a significant contribution to research, development and progress. This concept will be illustrated in a collage of images we will display in our exhibit zone. “Live demonstrations will be performed. Young people will be engaged in discussions. They will be encouraged to express their opinions and eventually guided to a correct understanding of different aspects of this industry.” Al Mazroui Engineering has been a driving force in the training and employment of young Emiratis since the company was founded in 1986. “Our training programmes have always been targeting ‘young hopefuls’ and this policy has been a major success. Plus, in the last decade we have offered students more and more chances to join us and improve their skills,” says Agha. “The labour market evolved together with the country. In the UAE, the oil and gas industry has attracted experienced and innovative professionals. They have integrated into the national master plan, thereby bringing about impressive future achievements in the workplace and UAE society as a whole.” This forms the basis for a “cultured and secure nation.”

bu Dhabi accounts for the vast majority of oil reserves and production, with Dubai trailing a distant second. Both onshore and offshore fields contribute to the UAE’s crude output, which averaged 2.72 mb/d in 2013. While this is a historic record high for UAE, and just short of the current sustainable capacity of around 2.85 mb/d, the country hopes to boost production capacity to 3.5 mb/d by 2020. A number of promising field expansions are due to come online by 2020, but the UAE is also significantly expanding refining capacity in response to rising domestic demand. The relative timings of upstream and downstream developments will have an important effect on how much crude oil UAE supplies to international markets. CRITICAL JUNCTURE The UAE’s 75-year concessions, that
established partnerships between ADNOC and IOCs such as BP, ExxonMobil, Shell and Total, are due to expire. The onshore concession, which accounts for around 1.6 mb/d of current production, expired at the start of 2014 and the offshore concession is due to end in 2017. We are clearly at a critical juncture for the future shape of the UAE’s upstream. Production capacity has yet to rise above 3 mb/d; a long-standing goal for the UAE. UAE crude output has remained near sustainable capacity, and upstream investment has resumed at full pace. Abu Dhabi’s three upstream operators have a number of projects aimed at lifting overall production levels through this decade, investing over US $50billion. The majority of the projects are expansions of existing fields. The largest single contribution will come from the Upper Zakum field, which was producing around 0.59 mbpd in late 2013 according to ZADCO executives. Exxon has
drilled new wells over the last few years, taking production capacity from 0.52 mbpd to 0.6 mbpd in 2012. This total is due to be expanded to 0.8 mbpd by 2017, although the completion date has been delayed twice, first from 2011 to 2015, and then to 2017, as development plans have been amended. Late last year plans were announced for a second phase of expansion to take capacity to 1 mbpd, although the timetable for this second increase has not been confirmed. We believe this second increase is unlikely to come online until early in the next decade, given the timescales of the first phase. The goal is to sustain production capacity at the increased levels for 25 years. ADCO expects to increase output from the Asab and Sahil fields by 0.1 mbpd in 2017 and ADMA-OPCO is targeting a similar increment from the Lower Zakum field. That expansion has been delayed from 2015 to 2020. A shortage of drilling rigs has reportedly (Continued on page 16)

contributed to the delays to the timelines of many projects, with the effects most noticeable in offshore fields. ADCO plans to implement CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques widely from 2016, following a trial at the Rumaitha field in 2009. These plans depend on attracting foreign companies with expertise in EOR. Similarly, ADMA-OPCO began testing CO2 and water injection EOR at the Lower Zakum field in 2013, in preparation for potential wider application among mature offshore fields. These approaches could help limit decline rates and contribute to the ambitious capacity expansion plans. Seven smaller expansions are set to add another 0.36 mb/d to capacity. In total, expansions to existing fields are due to add 0.77 mbpd between 2014 and 2020 if projects remain on track, with Upper Zakum Phase III contributing another 0.2 mbpd at a later date. Several new fields are also being brought online this decade, both onshore and offshore. The largest are the Satah al-Razboot (SARB) and Umm Lulu projects that ADMA-OPCO is expected to bring online in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Based on announced completion dates, the UAE expects to add 0.96 mbpd of production capacity by 2020. Further projects may be added, with CNPC appraising seven undeveloped blocks since 2012. In May this year it formed a joint venture with ADNOC to develop these fields. The official target is to reach 3.5 mbpd of capacity by 2020; around 0.65 mbpd above current capacity levels.

ADMA-OPCO and ADCO both plan to widely implement EOR techniques from 2016, which we believe is probably already factored into the latest official targets, suggesting those declines would be steeper if EOR is not implemented successfully.

TOTAL REVEALS HOPES, DREAMS AND GOALS Hatem Nuseibeh, president of Total UAE, tells how it plans to help Abu Dhabi achieve its ambitions
T
ell us about TOTAL and its regional activities in the last year.
Total’s engagement with Abu Dhabi dates back to 1939 with what started as the first contract, then grew over time. Today, Total is associated with nine ventures in the UAE, eight of which are in Abu Dhabi. They cover a wide spectrum of activities through our subsidiary Total Abu Al Bukhoosh (Total ABK) as well as through our partnership with ADMA OPCO, ADGAS, Dolphin Energy and GASCO. We are also shareholders of Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (FERTIL), a partner in the Taweelah A1 co-generation power plant in Abu Dhabi and pioneers in the new energies sector through our partnership in Masdar in Shams 1, the world’s largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in operation. Total Lubricants Blending UAE Company Limited, based in Dubai, is involved in the manufacturing and marketing of the entire range of automotive and industrial lubricants, greases, aviation and various speciality products. Today, our lubricants-blending complex in Jebel Ali Free Zone is the Group’s third largest blending plant. Along with Takreer, Total was also involved in the initiative “BIOjet Abu Dhabi: Flight Path to Sustainability”. This initiative was undertaken in close collaboration with Masdar Institute and Takreer, aimed at delivering a “sustainable and commercially viable biofuel” by 2019. We are also actively involved with ADNOC, Petroleum Institute and Masdar Institute in their respective projects to launch research centres in Abu Dhabi. What are your aims at this year’s ADIPEC? Total greatly values its participation in ADIPEC as we put great emphasis on communications and engagement with the public. The event is an opportunity for us to share our commitment

Empowering local nationals and women in the industry has always been a key focus for us. Through our Diversity and Equal Opportunity Charter we have adopted a proactive policy to enable women to access senior executive positions and, with more than 130 nationalities represented among our employees, we can confidently say that diversity of cultures and ways of thinking is a core strength of Total. The theme of ADIPEC this year is ‘Challenges and opportunities for the next 30 years’. What do you view as the challenges and opportunities in the region? There are four main challenges: training and recruitment of UAE nationals; maximising oil recovery; management of gas resources and supplies and alternative energies. Are you launching any new products or services at ADIPEC? If, so what? Is it of specific interest to the Middle East? We are coming out this time with a presentation on our CLOV project, in addition to an interactive demonstration of GOALS – Geology Operations Active Learning System. These are all state of the art technologies of value for delegates to visit, learn from and take home as value added knowledge from our side for ADIPEC 2014. Added to that, our stand is manned by experts who have been with ADIPEC from its inception. The knowledge base they can share with the visitors is of immense and infinite value. We are there to exhibit our know-how so that it can be used to achieve the goals set by Abu Dhabi.

OMV DIGGING DEEP FOR BUSINESS IN THE EMIRATES Georg Wachtel, general manager of OMV Abu Dhabi, outlines importance of its E&P push
A
ustria’s largest integrated oil and gas company, OMV, has made a real push on the E&P front in recent years, with the UAE a major focal point. Upstream exploration and production business has been targeted by OMV since 2011, as an area expected to deliver immediate performance improvements and lay the foundations for sustainable growth. OMV has a pipeline of projects coming on stream after 2016. OMV established a representative office in Abu Dhabi in 2007, registered an E&P branch office in January 2011, and by June 2012 signed its first upstream agreement with ADNOC. GROWTH AREA “The team swiftly matured two projects together with ADNOC, the Shuwaihat appraisal project with Wintershall as 50 per cent partner and operator, and an exploration project in Eastern region of Abu Dhabi, with OMV as the operator and ADNOC as our sole partner,” says Wachtel. ADIPEC is clearly important for the company, which sees the UAE as a new growth area for OMV. “It was a very important first step to get OMV engaged with E&P activities in Abu Dhabi. Especially as it is part of ADNOC’s strategy to develop the remaining sour gas accumulations in the western and middle offshore part of the Emirate, to increase domestic gas production and decrease dependence on imports,” said the GM.

Shuwaihat is seen by OMV as a perfect stepping stone to increase its upstream presence in the UAE. “This, together with OMV’s state of the art exploration campaign, will confirm to ADNOC that we are perfectly positioned to provide support as a strategic partner for their ambitious plan to increase production and reserves in Abu Dhabi.” EASTERN PROMISE Georg Wachtel, GM, OMV
It was a very important first step to get OMV engaged with E&P activities in Abu Dhabi OMV and operator Wintershall are now drilling the first appraisal well, Shuwaihat 5; spudded in May 2014. Shuwaihat’s sour gas is not without its challenges, but Wachtel points out his company has extensive experience in sour gas operations in Austria and Pakistan. In Shuwaihat, to further delineate subsurface uncertainties, the Shuwaihat JV is applying state of the art technologies such as horizontal well drilling, running sophisticated logging tools for formation evaluation, and acquiring 3D seismic for improved subsurface imaging. OMV has its own seismic processing centre and team experienced in optimising processing steps.
OMV followed up its first upstream agreement with ADNOC by signing a more far reaching exploration agreement in June 2013 to look at onshore opportunities in the Eastern region. “As an explorationist, you always have to be optimistic. This agreement is the first pure exploration agreement since the 60s, and it serves to evaluate the still under explored Eastern onshore regions of Abu Dhabi. We are seeking to follow successful oil trends which are productive on the Omani side. “Thanks to the excellent cooperation with all stakeholders, ADNOC, ADCO, and EAD, for example; we were able to start with seismic acquisition activities earlier than anticipated, in July 2014, only one year after signing the agreement,” he said. 3D seismic data acquisition is now well under way and the first exploration well is planned for 2016. “Cooperation with ADNOC has been excellent in developing the agreements we are in, as well as supporting our day to day operations. We are excited to have ADNOC as our partner in our exploration campaign,” concluded the GM.

JODCO’S LONG ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY WITH ADIPEC
J
apan Oil Development Co., Ltd. (JODCO), a subsidiary of INPEX Corp, a Japanese E & P Company, has been participating in ADIPEC since 1998 and continues its support this year by remaining a Gold Sponsor of the show. ADIPEC News hears from two senior INPEX executives about their past experiences of ADIPEC. Mr. Takashi Hiraoka, who worked as a Senior Reservoir Engineer in UDECO (following the merger - ZADCO) at that time, currently a Senior Coordinator in Technical Planning and Coordination Unit, Technical Division, was personally involved with the planning and execution of ADIPEC from 1986. Initially the event was known as Abu Dhabi Petroleum Conference with no exhibition. In the early 90s, Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce came on board. When discussions turned to the event name, it was soon agreed to incorporate ‘International’ and ‘Exhibition’. It was almost agreed to name the event ‘Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Conference and Exhibition’. Hiraoka felt that the acronym of this event would be very important, so he suggested swapping the conference and exhibition around since ‘ADIPEC’ would be much easier to pronounce. This proposal was agreed to and ‘ADIPEC’ came into being. Prior to the Chamber’s involvement, the Conference Organising Committee Chairman decided to have an exhibition alongside the conference. Considering the logistics alone were beyond the capabilities of the few volunteers available to run the event, Committee members tried to talk the Chairman out of this idea. However, he was steadfast in his belief that the exhibition was viable. With the combined efforts of everyone concerned, 27 exhibitors and their booths attended the first exhibition held in the Intercontinental Hotel Ballroom. “Looking at the size of the Exhibition now, the foresight of the Organising Committee Chairman, Mr. Ali Al Jarwan at that time was simply amazing,” said Hiraoka. Although Japanese oil development companies were participating in the operation of almost all offshore projects in Abu Dhabi, none had participated in ADIPEC. During the years 1996-1999 Mr. Yoshiro Ishii, currently Executive Officer & Vice President, INPEX was a representative of the Japan National Oil Corporation (JNOC) Middle East office, which agreed to sponsor a booth at the 8th ADIPEC (1998) for the exhibition proprietary of Japanese technologies, including an introduction to the Japanese oil

Looking at the size of the Exhibition now, the foresight of the organising Committee Chairman, Mr. Ali Al Jarwan at that time was simply amazing development companies in Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Oil Co. (ADOC), UPD/Bunduq and Japan Oil Development Co. (JODCO). Ishii said his main memory of the 1998 Exhibition was an incident with a Downhole Seismic Signal Transmitter, the development of which he had himself been involved in JNOC, displayed at the booth. Since the instrument was manufactured and brought from Japan the operating voltage was 100v, but staff mistakenly connected the device to a 220v power supply, which led to the power transformer circuit being burned. Following a night of searching for parts, 15 minutes before the opening, the circuit operated successfully. Mr. Ishii said he extends his sincere thanks to the Committee members for their kind invitation to the Industry Breakfast Session of the 30th Anniversary of ADIPEC. It has been 16 years since he left Abu Dhabi, and it is a great pleasure and honour for him to visit the wonderful city of Abu Dhabi and to attend ADIPEC once again, he said. At this year’s show INPEX/JODCO is focusing on CSR at ADIPEC. The Japanese firm will be introducing its new CSR activities in Abu Dhabi at the booth, as well as awarding the Category of Best CSR Initiative at the ADIPEC Awards 2014.

apan Oil Development Co., Ltd. (JODCO), a subsidiary of INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX), has operated in Abu Dhabi for over 40 years, participating in the development and production of the oil fields offshore Abu Dhabi operated by the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) and the Zakum Development Company (ZADCO). INPEX is Japan’s largest exploration and production (E&P) company, and ranks highly among mid-tier international oil and gas E&P companies. INPEX is currently involved in more than 70 oil and gas projects in 28 countries, including JODCO projects and the large scale Ichthys LNG Project that INPEX is developing as operator. Since 1998, INPEX/JODCO has been a constant presence at ADIPEC, where last year, INPEX President and CEO Toshiaki Kitamura featured in the CEO panel discussion. Participation in and sponsorship of ADIPEC has brought great benefits to INPEX/JODCO, including the opportunity to exchange the latest technical insights, gain increased recognition and expand relationships within the industry. INPEX/JODCO will continue to position ADIPEC as an essential platform for the regional and global advancement of the INPEX Group, and provide support to help ensure ADIPEC’s success for many years to come. INPEX/JODCO is also committed to sustaining its contribution and support for the ongoing development and growth of Abu Dhabi, and will seek to play an integral role in further nurturing and strengthening the relationship between Abu Dhabi and Japan.

READY FOR NEW CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES Face-to-Face with Ibrahim Al Alawi, Deputy CEO, Al Mansoori
A
l Mansoori Specialised Engineering is one of the most highly regarded providers of oilfield services in the Middle East. However, while its prime focus is the Middle East, it is constantly expanding throughout Asia, North Sea and North America. In a wide-ranging interview, deputy CEO IBRAHIM AL-ALAWI, discusses the state of the industry, the growth strategy of the company, the push to create more jobs for Emiratis, and more. He also lavishes praise on ADIPEC. Tell us what Al Mansoori has been doing for the last year - still on a strong organic growth strategy? During the last year we have been busy coping with accelerated organic growth, strengthening our internal processes and systems to cope with that growth, and preparing to introduce new service lines to the market. We are expecting a surge in client activity during the next few years, and are investing in our capability and capacity to be responsive to their needs. But while organic growth is the main focus of our growth strategy, we are also expanding geographically. However, we are doing so with care so as not to compromise on our commitments to our home territory. Where are the growth areas, by product/ service/geography? The growth is in both our existing service lines and new service lines. As our client needs become more sophisticated, we are called upon to deliver more and more advanced technologies and in more efficient and cost effective ways. Geographically, we have had a measure of success in emerging markets, and anticipate that this will continue, but most of it has been in countries where we already have a presence rather than in new territories. What about winning the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award? Congratulations - but what does it mean? It gives us great honour and tremendous pride to be the recipients of that award. It means we are moving in the right direction in terms of quality management and business processes.

aging facilities in existing oil and gas fields. The challenges faced by our customers are opportunities for us to provide cost-effective solutions for them. It also means there will be challenges for us to meet higher expectations for more challenging jobs. What about unconventionals? AlMansoori has long been a provider of more traditional industry products and services, but are you looking at unconventionals, or alternative energies?
To Illustrate the importance of ADIPEC to us, quite a few years ago we decided to dedicate our whole annual exhibition budget to ADIPEC Emiratisation was mentioned at the time of the award - how is that progressing? Emiratisation has always been a very important pillar of our organisation, and one that we see as an integral part of our philosophy. We are very active in trying to get Emirati talent to join us. They are well educated in this sector, have understanding for the business, and are naturally ambitious. But ironically, we compete with a lot of our clients for the same talent, and sometimes have to accept that the majors can seem more appealing to young professionals starting their careers. We are proud of the Emiratis we have among our senior staff, and they consistently demonstrate their abilities and their dedication. The theme of ADIPEC 2014 is ‘Challenges and Opportunities for the next 30 years” What challenges and opportunities do you see? The most difficult challenges that we foresee will be associated with producing sour gas, developing smaller and more complex oil and gas reservoirs, and coping with decreased productivity, increased water production and
www.adipec.com
We’re not ignoring them but we also understand that the conditions that led to the shale boom in North America are vastly different than the conditions in our region, geologically, environmentally and economically. They will eventually be developed but the time is not ripe for it now. As for alternative energies, in the near future there could be some applications for us to reduce reliance on generators in the field and to adopt more environmentally friendly innovations in our operations. How many partners do you have now? What are your plans for ADIPEC? More partnerships/JVs? Any new launches at the show? We currently have joint ventures with six different partners but we also have several strategic alliances, licensing arrangements, and representation agreements with other partners. We are always receptive to new ideas, innovations, and technologies, and are always looking for opportunities that we can introduce to our clients and to improve our existing service. There are usually some ongoing negotiations across different product and service offerings, but none that I can announce right now. We will definitely be showcasing our new service lines at the show as well as new technologies to enhance our existing service lines. How important is ADIPEC to Al Mansoori? To illustrate the importance of ADIPEC to us, quite a few years ago we decided to dedicate our whole annual exhibition budget to ADIPEC and stopped exhibiting at other shows, both in the region and internationally. We still attend other shows but we only exhibit at ADIPEC.

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME OF OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY GATHERS TONIGHT TO CELEBRATE EXCELLENCE ADIPEC Awards 2014 winners announced this evening at gala dinner in capital
T
he annual ADIPEC Awards – the barometer of regional industry expertise – is being held tonight, at the stunning Emirates Palace hotel. A record number of entries have been received this year - an increase of 100 submissions compared to 2013; some 396 entries, from 100 companies. The awards and gala dinner, sponsored by ADNOC, offer regional oil and gas companies an opportunity to showcase their achievements. “The growth of ADIPEC makes it an ideal venue and platform to recognise exceptional industry achievements. We aspire to use the [event] to share best practices, promote efficiencies, and reward those with significant contribution in the region and the world,” said Abdul Munim Saif Al Kindy, ADIPEC Awards Chairman. Jean-Philippe Cossé, ADIPEC 2014 Event Director at dmg events, said: “The ADIPEC Awards offers a remarkable representation of projects in the Middle East. The recordbreaking number of entries we received not only reflects the determination of oil and gas companies in the region to achieve best practice, but also their commitment to share this knowledge with the world.” NEW CATEGORY Weatherford sponsors the Best Oilfield Services Company Award, a new category introduced this year, recognising exceptional service to the region’s oil and gas industry, based on service quality, consistency, reliability and credibility. “It’s important for Weatherford to support ADIPEC awards because of the high level of attendance at the conference, where we can easily spread the message and the values we represent as a company,” said James
Williams, MENA VP, Weatherford. “The Awards play an important role in building a sustainable future as it represents a model of recognition to oil and gas industry players, and a model of rewarding good performance to the young generation. It is this exceptional performance that drives the whole sector to prosperity,” said Williams. The most popular category this year is Best Oil & Gas Innovation and Technology, with just above 130 entries, followed by the Best Oil & Gas Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Project or Initiative. Members of the Regional Select Jury (RSJ), a panel of 26 representatives from leading energy players, said the awards play a critical role in sharing best practice. Yosuke Ueda, member of the RSJ and Director and GM of JODCO, which sponsors the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative award, said the Awards provides companies the perfect platform to not only demonstrate their achievements, but also to disseminate potentially industry-changing information.

“The extent of the positive impact that CSR initiatives have on stakeholders is great. CSR is growing to cover more areas of operation, from compliance, HSE, and the development of human resources, to equal opportunities and encouraging voluntary activities for humanitarian causes. The oil and gas industry has the potential to be an exemplary model locally and globally for CSR initiatives,” said Ueda. Peter Seitinger, GM for OMV Libya, and RSJ member, said the awards play a critical role in raising awareness about what defines the Best Oil & Gas Project, the category OMV sponsors. “The project should demonstrate a safe and sustainable approach with clear benefits for surrounding communities, and meet or exceed expectations and objectives. It is also evaluated based on project delivery compared to competitive projects; the originality of the concept and its innovative approach, and should offer benefits to the investor, contractors, host country, and communities. The number of entries in this category is very impressive and I expect the quality will reflect the same,” Seitinger said. This year, there are seven categories: Best Oil & Gas Project; Best Oil & Gas Innovation and Technology; Best Oil & Gas HSE Project or Initiative; Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative; Empowerment of Women in the Oil & Gas Industry; Young ADIPEC Engineer; and Best Oilfield Services Company. COUNTRY PROFILE SAUDI ARABIA
KINGDOM’S OIL SECTOR BALANCES LONG-TERM OBJECTIVES WITH SHORT-TERM INTERESTS Saudi Arabia maintains world’s largest crude oil production capacity as it powers through headwinds
T
his is a watershed period for oil powerhouse Saudi Arabia as it faces many challenges, but is intent on turning them into opportunities. Saudi Arabia is the largest exporter and the second-largest producer of total petroleum liquids on the planet. But total petroleum liquids production declined in 2013, the first decline since 2009, due to a decrease in crude oil production. Saudi Arabia has the fifth-largest natural gas reserves, yet natural gas production remains limited. The country has plans to not only increase natural gas production in the future but to also diversify its power generation sources. Although Saudi Arabia has about 100 major oil and gas fields, more than half of its oil reserves are contained in eight fields in the northeast portion of the country. The giant Ghawar field is the world’s largest oil field in terms of production and total remaining reserves. The Ghawar field has estimated remaining proved oil reserves of 75 billion barrels, more than all but seven other countries. The kingdom’s oil exports reached 1.84 billion barrels in the first eight months of this year with proceeds amounting to SR747 billion ($200 billion), according to local media. Meanwhile, domestic consumption during the same period reached nearly 553 million barrels, or 23 per cent of the total output, leading consultant Fahad bin Jumaa was quoted as saying, by the Al-Riyadh daily newspaper. The above figures follow statements by Saudi Aramco CEO Khalid Al-Falih that his company intends investing SR150 billion ($40 billion) a year for the next ten years to maintain stability in oil production and double gas production. Saudi Aramco, the national oil and gas company, remains the world’s largest oil company in terms of production. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Supreme Council for Petroleum and Minerals have oversight of the oil and natural gas sector and Saudi Aramco. Saudi Arabia has 16 per cent of the world’s proved oil reserves, is the largest exporter of total petroleum liquids in the world, and maintains the world’s largest crude oil production capacity. Recently, there has been a substantial drop in oil prices at global level in light of geo-political developments and economic sanctions imposed by the US and the European Union countries on Russia.

Global oil supplies are still abundant and, therefore, demand tends to be weak. Oil supplies of the Organization of Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC), however, are stronger than ever before with a record of 30.44 million barrels per day (mbpd) in July supported by the Saudi increased production. Al-Falih recently told a forum in Norway: “Many observers point to a cloudy outlook for our industry, and predict even more stormy weather. While I am as confident as ever of our long term future, I certainly acknowledge that our sector faces significant hurdles. “Rising costs and cost overruns are dragging many projects with project price tags in the tens of billions of dollars, and with significant financial and technical risks. “Even at Saudi Aramco, project costs have roughly doubled over the last decade, despite deploying cutting edge technologies and applying our robust project management systems to mitigate cost escalation. “Of course, larger investments and a shrinking number of easier, cheaper fields mean more expensive production, and so industry profitability is plateauing after a banner decade.” To meet forecast demand growth and offset global output decline, the CEO suggested industry will need to add close to 40 million barrels per day of new capacity in the next

two decades. Saudi Aramco’s investments will span the value chain. Al-Falih said the bulk will be in upstream, and increasingly offshore, with the aim of maintaining maximum sustained oil production capacity at twelve million barrels per day, while doubling gas production. Petroleum exports accounted for 85 per cent of total Saudi export revenues in 2013, according to OPEC’s Annual Statistical Bulletin 2014. With the largest oil projects nearing completion, Saudi Arabia is expanding its natural gas, refining, petrochemicals, and electric power industries. Saudi Arabia’s oil and natural gas operations are dominated by Saudi Aramco. The King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy programme seeks to ensure half the electricity generated in Saudi Arabia comes from renewable sources by 2032.

s alternative energy sources make inroads, energy efficiency improves, and with today’s moderate oil demand growth, the longer-term oil outlook is fairly healthy, says Saudi Aramco CEO Khalid Al-Falih. “Despite some marvellous advancement by various hybrids and pure electrics, petroleumbased liquids will remain the fuels of choice, holding between 80 and 90 per cent of transport market share in 2050 depending on the scenario considered. “Our research agenda is targeting a leadership position in about a dozen technology domains. They include multiple
technologies that will help us achieve our goal of increasing our oil recovery to 70 per cent and allow us to add more than a hundred billion of barrels of oil resources to our already large portfolio.” But there will be no resting on laurels, according to Al-Falih. “At the end of the day, I believe we must put our money where our mouth is, by making prudent and timely investments; balancing long-term objectives and short-term interests; and meeting the energy needs of the future while providing attractive investment options and delivering value to shareholders. “I remain confident that our best days are yet to come.”

anifa Petroleum Services of Saudi Arabia is presenting its oil and gas tank cleaning technology at its first ADIPEC. “Our main focus is to showcase our engineering capabilities as well as look for potential partners to represent in Saudi Arabia,” says K.G. Padmanabhan, the Al Khobar-based company’s general manager. “ADIPEC is known for its professionalism, a place to showcase capabilities, organise potential meetings and ventures.” Manifa Petroleum Services was established with a principal focus on the oil and gas and engineering sector in the Gulf for offshore and onshore projects. The company is promoted by strong shareholders who collectively have over 85 years of experience in business. Manifa Petroleum’s key and unwavering operating policy has been to properly identify and assess its customers’ requirements and provide cost effective quality services in order to fulfill its contractual requirements to its customers’ satisfaction, according to the site.
ADIPEC is known for its professionalism, a place to showcase capabilities, organise potential meetings and ventures “Our focus is quality, cost, delivery and safety and we believe in long term association with our client. We deliver what we commit and we commit only what we could deliver. We deliver highly qualified products services to the customer base when the customer wants them and in the agreed time frame. “With continuing innovative marketing and excellent services, such as but limited to: engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, Manifa maintains a strong market position and remains poised for further growth in the future,” added the company spokesman.
SAUDI ARABIA MUST INVEST IN SOLAR
S
audi Arabia has no choice but to invest in solar energy, a senior official of the national electricity provider proclaimed, according to AFP newswire reports. “Solar energy is a must, not a choice,” Hamed al-Saggaf, an executive director at Saudi Electricity Company, told a solar energy conference in the Kingdom. The kingdom is the largest oilproducer in OPEC, and depends on oil and gas for its electricity production. “If we continue to consume fuel at the same rate then there will be a great lost opportunity. At least, we have to start now,” Saggaf told the 4th Solar Arabia Summit. Saggaf outlined a plan to invest in hundreds of megawatts of solar energy over the next five years by focusing on isolated areas, in the country’s north and northeast, which currently rely on diesel power generation. “The gateway for solar is the isolated areas. The cost of transporting the diesel is much higher than the subsidised cost of the diesel itself,” he said. Saudi Arabia plans to invest US$109 billion to produce 41 gigawatts of solar energy by 2032, covering 30 percent of its projected needs.

A RECORD TASTE OF INTERNATIONAL EXPERTISE There are more international exhibitors than ever before – many grouping together in country pavilions
M
ore country pavilions are scattered across the halls of ADIPEC than ever before. There are, of course, global companies exhibiting at this year’s edition of ADIPEC, but many choose to come together under their national flag, in a country pavilion. There are 20 pavilions this year, five more than in 2013, with 11 of those pavilions taking a larger space than last year. Salman Abou Hamzeh, Senior Project Manager for ADIPEC organiser, dmg events, said: “We have been saying for many years that ADIPEC is now an international event, but the strength and size of this year’s pavilions truly underlines the global interest in using ADIPEC as a means to reach the global markets. It’s good to see more Asian pavilions from Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as Nigeria
making its pavilion debut. We are confident that an enormous amount of business will be conducted throughout the pavilions this year.” The largest pavilion houses the Chinese delegation, which this year has taken another 97 square metres, making its space an impressive 2,604 square metres – that’s the size of four basketball courts.
Around 80 Chinese exhibitors are new to the show – that’s around 50 per cent – and there are a number of well known exhibitors including COOEC, ZTT International, BGP, CNPC, Honghua Group, Haicheng Petroleum, COSL and Rehne Group. The second largest pavilion comes from the US delegation, which has increased its stand size year-on-year by a massive 758 square metres totalling 2,075 square metres. Canada’s pavilion has grown impressively this year, from a 285 square metre space in 2013, to 480 metre pavilion this year - backed by the Government of Alberta & Ontario. While Germany’s pavilion space remains the same as last year, the pavilion organisers Hamburg Messe und Congress – needed more space, but it was unavailable. (Continued on page 33)

Jost Rueckert, from Hamburg Messe, explained: “Our pavilion covers a total of 729 square metres with 54 main and five sub-exhibitors. It’s the same size as 2013. Unfortunately there was no additional space available near our pavilion, so we had to reduce the space of some exhibitors to guarantee all applications could be included! “We could have covered more than 800 square metres. Some 33 companies joined us in 2013, 26 are new to the pavilion this year, but most of these 26 companies participated in 2012 or in previous years.” European neighbour Belgium is appearing at ADIPEC with a pavilion for the fifth time, with 21 square metres more space than last year. Frank Baeyens, Project Manager, Flanders Investment & Trade, said: “The Flanders/ Belgium pavilion is organised by Flanders Investment & Trade, the first participation dates back to 2010.
a pavilion of more than 270 square metres, comprising companies from the oil and gas industry, equipment, and process industry, showcasing the expertise and capabilities of the Indian manufacturing, services and consulting sectors. More than 30 exhibitors are on board covering the total area of 270 square metres.” Korea’s pavilion is just over 25 per cent bigger than last year’s; with major players GS Energy and KNOC exhibiting for the first time under the national umbrella.
BIGGER NAMES This year, the pavilion will be bigger than ever with no less then 12 of our finest companies presented, seven of them participating for the first time. Most companies are strong in maintenance, and work as private label suppliers for the bigger names in the oil and gas sector.” Singapore has taken a pavilion for the second year, after its successful debut last year. Organised by the Association of Singapore Marine Industries, this year’s pavilion has grown to 144 square metres, (from 90 square metres in 2013), showcasing 11 companies. Seven of the exhibitors in the Singapore pavilion are new companies. Meanwhile Scotland – another second time pavilion player – has doubled its stand space, after last year’s largest ever Scottish delegation to ADIPEC returned home with deals worth millions to the Scottish economy over the next decade. New pavilions this year come from India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nigeria. A spokesman for the India Pavilion said: “The Indian pavilion is jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Expoconsult India, with the support of Ministry of Commerce, India. This is first time that CII is supporting ADIPEC with

REFLECTIONS ON ADIPEC’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY While every edition of ADIPEC attracts new exhibitors, visitors and delegates, there are those who remember the early days of the event. Here, ADIPEC Show Daily asks them to share a few memories

.E. Mohammed Helal Al-Muhairi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry had the honour of contributing to the launch of this exhibition, sponsoring it, following its progress and providing to its success in co-operation with ADNOC. “Since its launch, the Abu Dhabi Chamber lent a helping hand to the organisation of this important petroleum event which had the privilege to be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and the support and follow up of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, which reflects their Highness’ interest in developing the oil and gas sector and bringing it to the highest international levels.” Mansour Alami, CEO of Abu Dhabi-based oil industry service provider, and EPC contractor,
®
Emdad, recalls his earliest memories of ADIPEC. “As a company we were only six years old when we heard about ADIPEC in 1984. Although we supported the idea, we never thought it would grow this big and become so global. We first attended ADIPEC in 1990 when Sheikh Zayed opened the show. “Relatively, it was a small gathering: more men than machines, more talk than show. But we came to know a lot about the fastchanging market scenarios and struck up a few promising partnerships. We never thought we would go on to win the Best Stand Design award in 2006 and 2008. “We’ve had many years of ADIPEC experience. And each time, we felt prouder of being part of it. It’s not just the mind-boggling surge in size, numbers or display that fascinates me. It’s the true spirit of the industry that the event tries to exhibit and exude with more integrity and force than the previous time.” Another long-time supporter of the event, Abu Dhabi’s AlMansoori, is still heavily involved in ADIPEC. Foroohar Farzadnia, Corporate Marketing & Business Development Director, said: “I remember well that ADIPEC
started as a local and regional event to attract local oil and gas clients. It was a very simple, cheap and non-bureaucratic exhibition. I was a visitor the first time I attended, and compared it to OTC and other international exhibitions. “Now, there are no words to explain the evolution that happened throughout the last 30 years. ADIPEC became an international event which now attracts different clients from all over the world. It is also one of the most famous oil and gas events in the world. It is head and shoulders above all other exhibitions, and we are proud to have participated in such an event.”

lukoil - KEY upstream PLAYER IN MIDDLE EAST Russia’s largest private company, an inaugural participant at ADIPEC, sees regional expansion as pivotal to its international development strategy
A
s one of Russia’s biggest hydrocarbon conglomerates, LUKOIL has set its sights on expanding its resource base and diversifying its international business geography. While international projects currently account for more than 10 per cent of the company’s total production, its development strategy envisages doubling this figure in the near term. Expanding the company’s operations and strategic partnerships in the Middle East will be the key to achieving this goal and that’s why LUKOIL is present at ADIPEC for the first time this year. Since 1997 LUKOIL Overseas – the operating subsidiary for LUKOIL’s international upstream projects – has been tasked with expanding the company’s international upstream portfolio. In the late 1990s the company launched its bid to develop one of the world’s largest untapped oil fields at West Qurna-2 in southern Iraq. RECORD TIME After winning the tender in 2009, LUKOIL worked with companies from over 20 countries on the project, completing initial construction of the greenfield site in record time to launch production in March of this year. “LUKOIL is already experiencing a return on its investment in West Qurna-2. In recent months, the company sent several carriers to the Southern Iraqi port of Basra to receive buy-back oil for delivery to its customers in the European Union”, says Gati Al-Jebouri, senior vice president, LUKOIL Overseas. Today West Qurna-2 is ranked among the world’s five largest oil fields in terms of production volume according to its target level of 1.2 million bpd. It will increase Iraq’s overall oil production by nearly a third. In a sign of the region’s significance to the

The move to Dubai brought LUKOIL closer to another key region: Central Asia. The company has major gas projects in the Republic of Uzbekistan: Kandym, KhauzakShady and Southwest Gissar. The assets in Uzbekistan are critical to LUKOIL’s gas business development strategy, where its accumulated gas production is approaching 25 bcm. Over the medium term, LUKOIL plans to more than quadruple annual production in Uzbekistan. The company has been active in Kazakhstan since 1995. Its largest projects are currently Tengiz and Karachaganak, where LUKOIL has partnered with the world’s leading oil companies, including Chevron and Exxon Mobil. HISTORIC OPERATION
Expanding the company’s operations and strategic partnerships in the Middle East will be the key to achieving this goal and that’s why LUKOIL is present at ADIPEC for the first time company’s global strategy, in 2013 LUKOIL Overseas became the first major Russian corporation to relocate its headquarters to Dubai. The company now manages its 30+ assets in over a dozen countries and 4,500-strong team from the new corporate service centre in the Middle East. In addition to West Qurna-2, LUKOIL is involved in geological exploration and seismic testing at the Block 10 field in Iraq’s Muthanna province. It is also executing major upstream projects in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
www.adipec.com
Meanwhile LUKOIL’s main offshore and deepsea exploration efforts are concentrated in West Africa and Europe. Since 2006, the Company has been exploring deep-sea blocks in the Gulf of Guinea, where it became one of the largest oil companies operating in the region and the first Russian company to drill a deepwater shelf. LUKOIL is also implementing exploration projects offshore Norway and Romania. For the latter, LUKOIL’s team spent 76 days this summer splitting and re-assembling a 98 x 78 meter semi-submersible rig from North America so that its derrick could pass under two bridges through Turkey’s Bosporus Straits. It was only the fifth such operation in the history of the oil industry. LUKOIL currently accounts for 2.1 per cent of the world’s output of crude oil. It has the world’s largest proven oil reserves among privately-owned energy companies and takes 3rd place in terms of oil production. “A diversified, technologically advanced and internationally-focused development strategy in which the Middle East plays a pivotal role will allow the company to grow these figures even further”, adds Al-Jebouri.

SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN’S ROLE IN OIL AND GAS
Women in Industry, an exclusive series of ADIPEC 2014 Middle East Petroleum Club (MEPC) events and initiatives dedicated to women in the energy sector, is set to be one of the liveliest aspects of this year’s event
A
fter two special sessions leading up to the event, the series of talks concludes with a landmark event at ADIPEC 2014 tomorrow – Day Two featuring live on-stage interviews with women, outlining their journey to success in their fields. The session will take place at the MEPC Theatre, offering (female-only) attendees a networking opportunity where they can share their thoughts and ideas with like-minded individuals. Conference Director Claire Pallen said, “We are excited to be hosting the Women in Industry session. We are dedicated to engaging with and creating a community for women working within the oil and gas sector, whether that be engineers, administration personnel, or senior managers. Numerous reports have shown the critical role of gender diversity in meeting business goals, from sourcing talent pools to increasing profitability. However, a recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, discovered only
11 per cent of board seats at the 100 largest listed oil and gas companies were held by women. Souad M. Al Hosani, President and Founder
of Nexus Business Services, said: “Oil and gas companies can retain women in their sector by offering them leadership positions and growth in their career,” said Al Hosani. “Leading and mentoring are two important challenges that need to be looked at for women in the oil and gas sector.” These challenges go beyond the borders of the Middle East and are faced by the industry worldwide, according to experts. “This is not just a regional challenge, it is a global challenge,” said Cynthia Babski, Internal Communication Manager at Qatar Shell Service Company. “Do not be afraid to voice your opinion and share your thoughts with your line manager. Make it happen for yourself. It will be difficult, but you are paving the path for others to follow.” “Shell is addressing the gender imbalance by implementing supportive and inclusive corporate policies, from designating fieldwork timings, to protocols that address worklife balance. Such policies can change the

dynamic of the work environment, and ultimately how people perceive the industry,” she said. Strong female networks are crucial to building a sustainable professional environment for women in the industry, added Maryam Amiri, Senior Communications Advisor, ADNOC. “There are cultural barriers that we need to address, but these take time to change and will not happen overnight,” Amiri said. “I would like to see a stronger support system among women. We need a ‘sisterhood’, a network of women who stand by each other, especially given these challenges that we all acknowledge. You often find this bond between men, but not so much among women because they are afraid of jeopardising their relationships.” ROTATION The forum is of critical importance in light of new employment trends showing a growing number of women graduates considering the energy industry for long-term career opportunities. Samar El Mnhrawy, VP, HR at Baker Hughes, said at her company, “in addition to mandating that 30 per cent of our field engineers must
be women, we offer female employees a rotation schedule that encourages them to get experience on the field. We also have specially dedicated nursing rooms for new mothers. “We have yet to fully tap into the potential of this talent pool. However, with these small but imperative steps, we are definitely moving in the right direction.” With a local, regional, and global mission to recruit more women in the energy sector, young female graduates must not be discouraged, says Mariam Al Hendi, Young ADIPEC Ambassador and a Mechanical Engineer at GASCO.
ADIPEC 2014 ONSITE OFFICIAL GATHERING
CHALLENGING
Panel discussions: Inspiring and empowering women leaders: a look at the role of women in the energy industry (1984-2044) and how women’s roles have grown and how we can expect them to develop and advance in the future. Journey to success: Industry interviews – inspiring, empowering and connecting. Live on stage interviews outlining women’s journeys to success and insights into their personal career paths.
“Women who are truly interested in engineering should not let anyone force them to change their career paths. It can be challenging at times, but the key is to focus on the positive and not the negative. “Everywhere in the UAE there are people encouraging women to pursue their dreams; it is part of the vision and mission of our leadership. People subjecting women to gender profiling must realise half the global population is female, and not harnessing the talents of women because of their gender is not only discriminatory, but also a waste of human resources.”

Ensuring that a production system remains within its design parameters requires strict monitoring of H2S content in produced oil, gas, and water that enables the management of corrosion and effluents disposal. The monitoring of hydrocarbon production rates and water content is possible through the use of multiphase flow meters that have been in operation worldwide for over 20 years. However, the monitoring of H2S content continues to require sampling of well stream fluids, with associated HSE risks. Leveraging the data acquired by the Schlumberger Vx* multiphase technology, the combination of a multi-energy gammaray fraction measurement and a differential pressure measurement collocated at a single point at the venturi throat, enables the measurement and monitoring of the H2S content in flow. MONITORING FEATURE The technology’s in-line H2S measurement allows a continuous monitoring of the H2S content in well effluents without any need for physical sampling. This monitoring feature can be implemented in all existing multiphase flowmeters without adding any hardware or additional sensors, thus can be deployed in the existing pool of over 1,400 surface meters worldwide. The in-line H2S measurement capability continuously monitors the total H2S mass fraction in the flow, in addition to the conventional measurement of oil, gas, and water flow rates without any separation or sampling of fluids. The rationale behind this calculation methodology is that in a conventional flow rate measurement the phase’s fractions are differentiated based on the ability of oil, gas, and water to absorb gamma rays of two different energy levels. Integrating an additional measurement of a third energy level that is already available from the existing flowmeters results in a large contrast between the attenuation of sulfur, hydrocarbon and water components. This makes it possible to determine the mass fractions of H2S as an additional output. As part of the development process, the Vx technology’s in-line H2S measurement has been tested in a wide range of conditions,

from oil to lean gas wells. Testing conditions ranged from low to over 4,000 psia flowing pressure, and had H2S content levels from 0% for testing purposes all the way to 30% by mass. Additional static tests were performed with pure H2S in both gaseous and liquid forms in laboratory and simulated conditions. The results were evaluated against measurements obtained from physical samples that were analysed in pressurevolume-temperature laboratories to obtain a representative composition of well fluids. They demonstrated that the in-line H2S measurement was within 0.5% by weight of the reference data in all cases. IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC Another important characteristic of this measurement is resolution, which controls the ability of the H2S in-line measurement to detect changes in flow conditions or compare fluid content between wells in the same formation. Based on the analysis of field test data, changes in H2S content of 0.1% by weight fraction can be positively recognised, thus enabling the identification of small variations in composition. This new measurement provides several key pieces of information to operators, such as the identification of gas breakthrough in sour gas re-injection scenarios, the indication of changes in production ratios between commingled reservoirs with contrasting H2S content as tracers, the mapping of compositional gradation between reservoir sections, both aerially and versus depth, and the identification of compartments between zones showing irreconcilable composition variations. On the production surface facilities side, this additional measurement, combined with multiphase flow rate measurements, helps determine H2S flow

rate to manage fluid processing capabilities and confirm flowing ratios readings in the case of water cut increase or gas breakthrough. With water cut increase, a reduction in H2S content in flow would be observed due to dilution by the produced water, while gas breakthrough can be confirmed through the combination of an increase in gas/oil ratio and in H2S content, as gas typically bears more H2S than liquid phases. This in-line H2S measurement technology has been used in more than 50 wells in the Middle East, Russia and the Caspian region, providing operators with critical additional information and confirmation of production behaviour obtained from their multiphase flow meters in challenging environments, through a unique and non-intrusive method of monitoring sour gas rate content. SKY-FUTURES INSPECTIONS BOOSTING SAFETY
S
ky-Futures, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industrial inspection company specialising in live flare and structural inspection work, is a global leader for providing UAV inspections to the oil and gas industry, according to the company. The inspections provided on live operating assets, both on- and offshore, increase safety and save significant costs by avoiding shutdowns and reducing time spent inspecting assets. Unmanned technology is revolutionising maintenance and inspection techniques within the oil and gas industry, and it will be to the fore on the company’s stand at ADIPEC. James Harrison, Sky-Futures commercial director said: “We attended ADIPEC last year and are attending again this year. As a company we are committed to serving the Middle East market, and are looking forward to securing long term relationships.” In-house flare and structural expertise provide Sky-Futures’ expert opinion on the condition of flares and structures. Sky-Futures’
flare expert David English has experience across the Middle East, including UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. The inspection service utilises highdefinition video and still and thermal imagery to collect data on hard to reach infrastructure. Sky-Futures recently provided five live flare inspections for a major oil and gas company in Northern Egypt. The company had an urgent requirement to understand the conditions of the flares to decide whether a shutdown was required, what parts would need to be ordered and if any refurbishment was required. Having flown five separate live flare inspections in five days, Sky-Futures provided a highly detailed report written by an in-house flare expert. The oil and gas company were able to effectively plan for the shutdown, identify the parts required and order the spares in good time. The potential reduction in shutdown time was five days enabling the company to save US$3.75m.

MEXICO FORGES LINKS WITH GCC ENERGY PLAYERS For the first time in nearly 75 years, Mexico is reforming its state-run energy sector – and big time
U
nder President Enrique Peña Nieto, reforms are sweeping across Mexico’s economy. In August, a new Constitutional Energy Reform Bill ended the monopoly of state-owned oil company, Pemex, and opened the floodgates for potentially billions of dollars in investment. Now, a high-level Mexican delegation is attending ADIPEC to discuss the future opportunities of this country, which is just opening up to foreign partnerships. A special invitation-only VIP Briefing discussing energy reform in Mexico, held under the patronage of the Mexican Ambassador to the UAE, Francisco Alonso, and sponsored by Santander, is being held at the Middle East Petroleum Club during ADIPEC. “We are hosting this seminar to explain to companies and industry professionals what the meaning of this reform is, and what the opportunities are. I believe ADIPEC will open doors for us in the region. For us, it is very important to have this opportunity to meet everyone directly.
“We are not going back to the past. We changed the constitution to give opportunities for companies to invest in Mexico. The government has freed the market. We have opened our energy sector as it is the only way to remain competitive,” said the Ambassador. He said the reform bill does not mean Pemex has been sold or privatised. “There has been no change to the structure of the company, which is still part of the state of Mexico. It is part of our national identity. One of the main motives behind Further underlining Mexico’s interest in the

OPPORTUNITY “I believe the UAE could be our best partner in the region. There exists common ground to look for new opportunities, and the potential is there. All we need to do is put the people together. I believe ADIPEC is the best way to do this. In the last two years we have already created connectivity with the Ministry of Energy, ADNOC and Mubadala Petroleum.” A key reason the UAE is of interest to Mexico relates to ADNOC’s concessions, which expired at the beginning of this year. Abu Dhabi has asked all companies, existing partners and newcomers, to bid for the next round of concessions. “This is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn from Abu Dhabi. For us, we are starting again. There are a lot of opportunities in the whole chain of production in Mexico, including the possibility to develop new fields in both oil and gas. Through new technology usage, Pemex hopes to increase production from 2.5 million bpd currently, to 3 million bpd in 2018, and 3.5 million bpd by 2025. This increase also relates to gas and natural gas production, which will also jump from 5.7 cubic feet per day today, to 8 billion in 2018, and 10.4 billion by 2025. First bidding round for international partners is expected in June 2015. Alonso explains: “It is huge reform we are undertaking; not solely cosmetic. We are very serious; the reforms go

Dan Shute, Volant president, said: “Our aim this year, as every year, is to provide more knowledge about Volant tools to the industry and build our customer base throughout the GCC. “Our knowledgeable team is located at the Canadian Pavilion in Hall 3, where we can offer information about our products and explain how we can add value to your operations. We have a replica of our casing running tool (internal grip) at our stand demonstrating the technology that is helping our customers “do more with less” throughout the world. “Our latest product is a mudsaver valve (MSV) that is fully compatible with our casing running tools, which we launched in March this year. It opens and closes automatically with pressure and flow and allows backflow to avoid trapped pressure in the casing string. The product easily installs between the CRT and casing seal, minimising any mud spillage, and it keeps the rig floor and surroundings safe and clean.”

In terms of ADIPEC, Shute said: “We are pleased with the show; it has great international appeal with nearly 60,000 attendees and all of the networking opportunities. Volant views this as a great opportunity to discuss our products and ensure our strong relationships.” Volant’s primary markets are in North America right now, but it operates on six different continents in 31 different countries. Volant is currently doing business in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, Egypt as well as other countries throughout the Middle East and Southern Asia. The company president suggested ADIPEC is also the right platform for the company to “seek out new partnerships and distributors that will add value to our customer base and bring merits to the Volant brand.” “While the UAE is set to grapple with technological challenges, deadlines and expensive oil projects amid continued costly energy subsidies, Volant is perfectly positioned to assist companies in the UAE and all of the other Gulf States with these challenges. “Our casing running tools, HydroFORM centralisers and torque rings are all about simplifying complex well designs and ensure total depth is acquired. We are open to serving more customers throughout the GCC region.”

METEORIC YEAR SEES GMS RISING STAR ON LSE
T
his has been an exciting, transformational year for Gulf Marine Services (GMS). Having undergone a buyout in 2007, the management team brought in at that time delivered five continuous years’ growth in revenue and profit. This growth provided the foundation for a successful IPO on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) last March, which valued the business at more than $750m and raised its international profile. Since listing, the share price has risen almost 15 per cent, making it one of the best newcomers to the London market this year. The IPO enabled GMS to raise $110m of new funds to help finance planned expansion. Duncan Anderson, CEO of GMS, says: “Listing on the London Stock Exchange was a significant step for GMS and we are delighted at the level of interest in our stock from the international investment community. However, the IPO by no means marks the peak of our ambitions. “We have enjoyed considerable commercial success since then, posting a strong set of half year results, as well as completing our latest vessel, the Enterprise, ahead of
schedule and below budget, and securing several significant new contracts. We are therefore very well placed for further growth and expansion into new markets.” GMS designs, builds and operates selfelevated support vessels (SESVs), also known as jack-up barges. These SESVs are fourlegged self-propelled vessels with a large deck space, crane capacity and accommodation facilities. They can be used for a wide variety of purposes, supporting installation,
maintenance and refurbishment of offshore oil and gas platforms and wind turbines, together with well intervention work. One of the vessels’ most important features is that they are able to move independently, with no requirement for anchor handling or tug support. This reduces the time taken to be ready for deployment at the required location, and costs of getting there. GMS was founded in Abu Dhabi in 1977 and has become one of the largest providers of SESVs in the world. It operates worldwide, with its assets capable of serving clients’ requirements in the Middle East, South East Asia, West Africa and Europe. GMS’ current fleet of ten SESVs is technically advanced and among the youngest in the industry, with an average age of eight years. GMS’ headquarters are at Mussafah shipyard in Abu Dhabi, with subsidiary operations in Saudi Arabia and the UK. The company plans to add up to five more vessels to its fleet by the end of 2016, as it responds to continued strong customer demand and increased market opportunity. Last September the GMS Enterprise became the tenth member of GMS’ fleet.

Most recently appointed was Muscatbased Black Gold, which offers business and technical advice and cutting-edge technology to the oil and gas sector. In April, LUX Assure also entered into sales agreements with Middle East Oilfield Services (MEOFS) in Kuwait, a technology provider to the upstream and downstream sectors, and Abu Dhabi based Consolidated Suppliers, one of the main service providers to the oil and gas industry in UAE. Together the three agents will support LUX Assure’s Middle East market penetration strategy, acting as sales representatives and promoting and assisting with the deployment of its chemical monitoring technologies. LUX Assure CEO, Charles Cruickshank said: “Appointing these strategically located partners is a major milestone within our expansion plans for the Middle East. We are already starting to see the benefits, with new relationships being established and by having on-the-ground support readily available for existing clients.” To further consolidate its Middle East regional relations, LUX Assure is in the process of registering with ADNOC, the state-owned oil company of the United Arab Emirates. Obtaining ADNOC registration will make
LUX Assure an official supplier to the ADNOC group, further enhancing its profile in the region and expanding its reach and capabilities. Cruickshank said: “The ADNOC registration will be another major element of our Middle East expansion plans and we are confident that this will open up a whole host of opportunities in the area.” This Middle Eastern focus is a key part of LUX Assure’s ambitious global growth strategy, which has also seen distribution partners appointed in North America. LUX Assure has bases in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, and is in the process of establishing an entity within the UAE. The company specialises in asset integrity, developing novel chemical monitoring technologies for the oil and gas industry, both on and offshore.

CAMCON-BRINGING HS&E BENEFITS AND DIGITAL GAS LIFT TO MIDDLE EAST OPERATORS
M
iddle East oil & gas operators today are increasingly dependent on artificial and gas lift technologies to increase recovery yields. Yet, current gas lift technologies come with limitations – especially in the areas of health & safety. The primary gas injection method today is ‘side pocket mandrel’ configured completions where wireline interventions are required to change depth, port size and injection rates. Such interventions come with considerable risks, however, including the dangers of tangled or broken cable in the well or wireline or slickline tools being lost. There are also the costs of additional personnel. In addition, there are the dangers of well instability where the lack of information on pressures and temperature at the point of gas injection can lead to surges in liquid and gas flow that have the potential to shut down production separators, degrade field

t’s been a busy year for Quickflange, one of the industry’s leading providers of high performance pipe connection systems, as it comes to ADIPEC on the back of a busy year in the Middle East. Traditionally a North Sea business headquartered in Norway, and with over 4,000 Quickflange activations worldwide, the last year has seen increased Middle East demand for its fast, safe and highly cost effective piping solution that is equivalent in strength to a welded or mechanical connection, but without requiring access to heat sources. Quickflange recently conducted a trial installation of the Quickflange for the ADNOC Group of Companies on the Upper Zakum field in Abu Dhabi. “We’ve seen increased demand for our topside and subsea Quickflange pipe

connection solutions across the region but particularly in the UAE and ahead of this, Qatar,” said Aftab Shaikh, Quickflange’s Middle East Sales Manager. Aftab continues: “We are also seeing growth in high criticality and larger pipe work applications, as we expand our product base subsea and increase our Middle East market share. ADIPEC – an event we have
attended before - will be an ideal platform to showcase our successes with regular product demonstrations every hour.” The Quickflange slides onto the pipe without the use of heat or other potential ignition sources, with a hydraulic tool used to activate the flange. Other recent developments include the Quickflange Subsea that is seeing increased Middle East interest. The simple design lends itself to reduced CAPEX, minimal parts and low maintenance. Quickflange is also focused on providing a ‘one-stop shop’ for Middle Eastern operators with Quickflange technicians on site to provide cutting and pressure testing services in addition to the Quickflange’s application. It’s synonymous with the Philippines’ construction industry, having built the country’s first steel bridge and Manila’s water and sewage systems, amongst other major national infrastructure. Today, as the only Philippines-headquartered, multinational company, it is building a new industry – Industrial Process Outsourcing – that is changing how the infrastructure world does business, according to Rituraj Mathur, AG&P’s VP for Business Development (MENA Markets). “We work for some of the world’s most vital and complex infrastructure projects. Our core aim is to accelerate project construction through the delivery of our purpose-designed ‘Modstruction’ solutions, while also providing skilled personnel to job sites around the world,” he said. As a first-time exhibitor, Mathur says the company will be taking a very active part

Indeed, we are increasingly being asked to support our partners here for such work. This event attracts the best in the industry and our aim is to re-introduce AG&P’s core services to the broader MENA market.” The stand will showcase AG&P’s entire ‘Modstruction’ capability. “AG&P’s 150 hectare yard facilities in the Philippines are the largest modularisation centers in Southeast Asia, and our offering goes beyond the traditional steel and pipe composition of industrial modules. Our approach involves the planning, design, engineering and construction of fully-outfitted modules, complete with complex electrical and instrumentation systems installed and tested prior to their shipment to the project site,” said the VP. “This is our first time exhibiting at ADIPEC and we are really pleased to be part of this

In addition to its core ‘Modstruction’ offering, the company’s FieldCOM division supplies high-quality, experienced professionals and craftsmen across the globe, including harsh or remote regions. KEY MARKETS The company is eyeing key markets of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, and Mathur intends to use the platform to search for new local partners. “As the need for infrastructure increases world-over, we expect demand for our services to grow exponentially. While we have local partners in many parts of the region already, our unique end-to-end offering presents a number of opportunities, so we are always interested in speaking with potential partners,” he concluded.

INDUSTRY ROUND-UP CHINA, VIETNAM RIG ROW EASES TANZANIA TO PICK BID C WINNERS SHORTLY hina and Vietnam seem to be working out their differences over maritime disputes concerning the potentially energy-rich South China Sea. Ties between the Communist countries sank to a three-decade low this year after China deployed a $1 billion oil rig to disputed waters which straddle key shipping lanes. Vietnam claims the portion of the sea as its exclusive economic zone, and the rig’s deployment sparked a wave of riots and bloody clashes between Vietnamese and Chinese workers in Vietnam. The two countries should “properly address

T Chevron Pacific Indonesia, a unit of Chevron Corp, has submitted an official letter saying it would temporarily delay its deep water gas development project worth $12 billion in Makassar Strait, East Kalimantan, says Naryanto Wagimin, director for upstream business at the energy and mineral resources ministry, according to local press reports. Chevron plans to revise its calculations for the project, said Naryanto, adding that the firm has discovered fresh gas reserves.

LEBANON RESERVES ‘HIGHER THAN EXPECTED’ N
ew estimates for nearly half of Lebanese waters suggested the country’s reserves of natural gas and oil might be larger than previously thought, Lebanese Energy Minister Gebran Bassil says. “The current estimate, under a probability of 50 per cent, for almost 45 per cent of our waters has reached 95.9 trillion cubic feet of gas and 865 million barrels of oil,” Bassil says. “This definitely needs more exploration and drilling activities to get more precise figures, but this is an indication that with more work surveys and analyses, we are getting higher results and higher expectations,” he said in an interview at the Reuters Middle East Investment Summit.
SCHLUMBERGER TIPS OIL, GAS SPEND INCREASE S
chlumberger says oil and gas spending will increase in 2015 as global oil demand is poised to rise, downplaying fears of an investment slowdown due to weak crude prices. Oil prices have slid nearly 20 per cent since June. “The key to the overall oil market is still that the global oil demand is currently set to increase by 1.1 million barrels per day in 2015, which will require growth in exploration and production investments,” Schlumberger chief executive Paal Kibsgaard said, Reuters reported.

anzania is in the final stages of evaluating bids – including two from the UAE - for oil and gas blocks it offered in its latest bidding round and plans to pick the winners before the end of this year, its upstream regulator says. East Africa is a new hotspot in hydrocarbon exploration after substantial deposits of crude oil were found in Uganda and major gas reserves were discovered in Tanzania and Mozambique. “The evaluation of bids is in the final stages,” James Andilile, acting managing director of the state-run Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), told Reuters. “Winners of the successful bids should be announced this year.” Tanzania, a focus for natural gas exploration, received five bids in May for four of the eight oil and gas blocks it offered. In some of the blocks there were joint bids. ExxonMobil, Statoil, Russian gas producer Gazprom and state-run Chinese offshore oil and gas producer CNOOC are among companies that submitted bids. From the UAE, Mubadala and Ras Al Khaimah Gas also put forward bids.
EBOLA DISRUPTS SOME EXXON ACTIVITIES

xxon Mobil’s CEO says the company has seen some of its oil and gas activities in West Africa disrupted by the Ebola outbreak, including plans to drill offshore Liberia. Exxon, which has operations in Nigeria and Liberia, is prohibiting some employees from traveling to the countries directly affected by the disease, and is taking precautionary measures related to workers’ families, CEO Rex Tillerson told a news conference. “We had some drilling plans for some blocks offshore West Africa in Liberia,” Tillerson said. “We are having to look at when it would be prudent to resume operations there because you do have to have shore-based support.”
