THE RADIAL A PROJECT FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE ARCHIVE
8
Location: Albert Street, West Brunswick, Victoria, Australia. This is a project for the University of Melbourne Archive building. This was one of my final semester projects in the Bachelor Degree. The project is called THE RADIAL as the floor plans are arranged in radial arrangement and the structure plan is also arranged in radial, following the arrangement of the floor plans. The radial arrangement allows the focal point to become the center of users circulation that can navigate their journey to almost every space in the building, just like a compass. In the focal point, there is a spiral ramp that allows users to have continuous journey from the reception area to the lowermost part of the building and also to the very top of the building. Along their journey on the spiral ramp, users’ eyes will be directed to the surrounding spaces and also to the hanging display shelves, displaying archive objects that cannot be touched but can be observed. Since the spiral ramp continues to the lowest level, where the archive storage is located, the users are allowed to witness the objects stored in the archive through the glass windows without touching and eroding the objects’ quality. The spinning arrangement of the archive storage shelves showcases the objects more obviously to the users and it also allows more exciting experience for the staffs when they are inside the storage. Finally, the users could end their journey as they continue walking on the spiral ramp to the very top of the building. At the very top, they can enjoy the pleasant view of the surrounding envioronment from the glass cylinder.

Location: Corner of Sydney Road and Albert Street, West Brunswick The concept of this project is communal gallery, where every space is connected spatially and also visually. This project responds to the need of different programs in such a relatively small site: a gallery with a cafe, a bookshop, an a flat for the manager. Each of the programs is different but it does not mean they have to be entrirely separated, because the separation will only make each of the spaces look smaller. The circular geometry on the plan becomes the focal point that connects all of the different programs together, spatially and visually. The users that are having activities at one space, are still visually connected to the users at the other spaces. spaces The spiral ramp also connects each level and it connects the users to the upper levels. While walking on the spiral ramp, the users’ eyes will be directed to the hanging display shelves, displaying 3D objects and books. At the top of the building, there is a gallery inside the glass cylinder, where the most premium objects and paintings are displayed. This glass cylinder gallery also connects the users to the surrounding Brunswick area as the users can enjoy viewing the objects and painting displayed while also looking at the surrounding environments views.

RESIDENTIAL
A home can be a place for rest, yet it can also be a blank canvas for works of art. Different colours, lightings, textures and materials create certain emotions and experience for the dwellers as they move from space to space. One space should be creating unique ambience, distinguished from the others as they have different functions and used at different times of the day. Modeled using sketchup, rendered using 3ds Max and VRay.

CONSTRUCTION MODEL A REMODELLING OF THE JUNIOR BOYS SCHOOL [PANLEIGH AND ESSENDON GRAMMAR SCHOOL ESSENDON CAMPUS] - BY MCBRIDE CHARLES RYAN ARCHITECTS
30
This is a hand-crafted section model of the Junior Boys School by McBride Charles Ryan Architects, built subsequently from foundation, footings, floor slabs, structures, internal partitions, openings, roof structures to finishes. It was built by a team of two, me and another student; and it was built according to the real geotechnical report, architecture drawing set and the structural drawing set that were provided by the company for education purposes. This model shows an understanding of the correct sequence of the real construction process, and also the details of how one material connects to the others. It also reveals the structure of the real building and the layers behind the finishes, such as the reinforcement bars under the floor slabs, the stud walls and insulation behind the painted plasterboard and also the complicated ceiling and roof structures behind the beautiful curved ceiling.

The model remodels the real building of the Junior Boys School by McBride Charles Ryan Architects, located at Essendon, Victoria, Australia.

The model does not show the entire building; yet it remodels a section of it. It shows as much as 6mx6m of the layers of the foundation below ground, the footings and also the structure above the ground.

PAPER LANTERN
This paper lantern was designed through series of process from ideation to digitalization to fabrication. The design ideas came from the natural process of how earthquake starts, reaches its climax, till it finally ceases. The production itself requires a knowledge in digital software (Rhinoceros 3D, for 3D modelling) and also a usage of laser cut machine for fabrication.
