Dwardu’s Scoops Water Catchment monitoring Project continues By Dean Galea Pellicano

Over the past few days, two officials from the Rainwater Catchment Project visited St Edward’s College to carry preliminary checking of the inside of the cisterns. Using a GoPro they checked for any roots or wires in the water which might create problems for the Remote Operative Vehicle (ROV) which will be lowered in the cisterns this May, to conduct studies. It is very important that that there are no obstacles for the ROV, because should it get stuck only a diver would need to get down there to loose it up. Helped by our Guzi, they surveyed the cisterns and thankfully confirmed that the coast is clear, the ROV can be safely used!

Easter Hunting And the hunt is on! As Easter approaches, Figolli and Easter Eggs vie for attention as these sweets, born out of different traditions but tied intrinsically to this season of rebirth, just beg to be eaten. Short of a college-wide sugar rush, we had our little ones rushing around looking for easter eggs. Underneath the hedgerows, inside tree hollows, on the lawn...wherever you can possibly imagine, eggs were hidden and little bunnies (also identifiable as children in some cases) hopped around gathering their stashes. A picture of your child seeking Easter Eggs is most likely to be found on the college website if you follow this link.

Our Lady of Sorrows

The boys in the middle school attended a mass for the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. Unlike Christmas, the boys leave early for the Easter Holidays so this is the last day of college for them. Mass was held in the Parish Church of Zejtun, which made a difference for the boys who normally attend mass at the College Chapel. Two of the boys acted as altar boys. After mass, Perit Ruben Abela who is, by profession an architect who has worked on cultural heritage for several years, explained various aspects of the social, religious and cultural heritage of Zejtun, from its birth as two separate hamlets to the richly historical town it is today. More information on Zejtun can be found on www.wirtizzejtun.com

Shh! Genius at work in Yr 9 By Julian Coppini

At St Edward’s College, we have always had young achievers, and Mr Julian Sci cluna (Yr9) is by far no excepti on. Mr Sci cluna has created his own mobile app: a calculator app that has the ability to carry out a multitude of functi ons and mathemati cal problems. Mr Sci cluna coded the calculator to be able to carry out simple, and complex mathemati cal problems - such as plotti ng graph functi ons; converti ng bi nary bases; converti ng between SI units; performi ng advanced functi on calculati ons; derivati ons; hyperboli c si n/cos/tan problems; and so much more. The calculator, Mr Sci cluna explai ned “...is written i n HTML, JavaScript for the calculati ons, conversi ons and styles. It had two UIs (User Interfaces) and can convert between ten SI units. By usi ng the style functi ons i n the code, the user can change the font, whiteboard size, frame and even the UI itself. It can calculate up to 15 decimal places and is not restri cted at all. It is i n fact not complied - meani ng the user can freely change the code to improve the software him/herself.” After speaki ng about his i ncredible appli cati on, Mr Sci cluna went on to describe the reason for choosi ng to program a calculator app, his aspirati ons and i nspirati ons, “Honestly, I did it out of fun. I want to be an engi neer or programmer, so starti ng with a calculator seemed to be a solid start.” The young coder also menti oned the possibility of publi c shari ng, as well as a small message to possible users, “I’m not sure whether I will publish it on the App Store or not, I feel like I can do a lot more before it comes out. I also have other projects I'm worki ng on. But if i do release it, be sure to go ahead and explore the features!” As an IB student, College Capitan and old Edwardian, I am always filled with pride, but most of all, I am always truly impressed by the i nnovati on and talent our young men show. Codi ng an app i n Year 9! I remember all I wanted to do i n Year 9 was get my homework done and go play. I wish Mr Sci cluna, the young coder, good luck with his future projects, and I can’t wait to see what he whips up next! Page 13

Creating an Impact By Samantha Abela

The National Literacy Agency has been working tirelessly this year to promote various activities amongst students in schools. One of this year’s initiatives is the publication of the magazine ‘Impatt’ which targets students in Year 8. 4 Issues will be published in total thanks to the initiative and work of Ms Ruth Frendo the editor of this magazine. Written in Maltese it gives the students the opportunity to

learn about different themes in a fun and engaging way. Some of the topics tackled so far were: voluntary work, poverty, social inclusion education art, culture, sports, racism etc… In fact for the latter there was also an inter-

esting feature about Martin Luther King that worked tirelessly for equality and respect for all. There are also various online resources related to this magazine which can be downloaded by students on https:// www.ruthfrendo.com/kotba Page 14

Elijah Zammit receiving his Prize for XXX from Headmaster Mr Nollaig Mac An Bhaird. Regrettably Master Zammit was omitted from the Prize Day Pictures due to a human error. His achievement is recorded with pride today. Well Done!

Timmy Vassallo has done it again! He’s placed 3rd Overall in the Bodrum International Optimist regatta (BIOR). This was held in Bodrum, Turkey. Timmy’s placing on the podium is all the more prestigious when one considers that he competed with 320 sailors from 20 odd countries which included the world’s best such as young sailors from the USA, Thailand and Ukraine.

Another success for young Timmy
