Balancing the Life Game
In the book titled “The Purpose Driven Life,” the first sentence reads, “It’s not about you.” Upon reading this sentence, I closed the book. It was all I needed to hear. The clarity of that statement made me challenge myself even more to help others. I believe that youthfulness, high energy and emotional health can be enhanced dramatically by assisting others. Finding a Balance How does someone live life focused on helping others? After considerable thought and reflection, I decided to engage in various philanthropic organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Kairos Prison ministry, and various other causes that pulled on my heart. Several years ago, I came to the conclusion that I was spreading myself too thin with family, career, philanthropy and physical well-being. I decided to make a change and focus on more balance and less stressful scenarios. Why did I come to that conclusion? That is a long story but I will give you the abbreviated version. After my dad served in Korea with the armed forces, he climbed the corporate ladder and moved our family up and down the east coast before finally settling in the Chicago area. His health was not the greatest and he had been fighting many health issues. Ironically, after Neil’s daughters, L-R: Megan, Elizabeth listening to and Ashley, are his inspiration for staying Kelly in the game. It hit me that I wanted to enjoy the next phase of my life. I still wanted to help others but also needed to invest time in myself in order to do so. I knew from past enjoyable experiences, that getting back into playing squash was the right prescription for bringing things back into Neil Garrison and his wife, equilibrium. Carol, are partners in helping The Back Story others be the best they can be. Let me “back and fill” for a moment. It is tough to be an effective dad without a great partner. My wife, Carol, and I spent a lot of time balancing who was going to be where and when for our daughters while instilling the value of independence and responsibility. I am very lucky and humbled to have such a great wife and kids that have strived to the best they can be while helping others be the best they can be. Seeing my daughters participate in games that they love solidified my desire to get back on the court. In 2008, my oldest daughter Ashley had recently graduated from high school after a strong high school golf career. She was awarded the Karen Stone Sportswoman of the Year. Ashley had numerous scholarship offers; not bad for someone that started the game 30 days before her high school tryouts. My other daughter Elizabeth, a recent University of Florida graduate, played basketball. Three years were invested in following my daughter and her wonderful teammates and coaches to basketball tournaments around the region while traveling throughout the eastern part of the United States to watch Ashley play college golf. I didn’t miss a shot her junior season at Loyola University of Chicago and my car now has 178,000 miles on the odometer and a new engine. My youngest daughter Megan told me in the spring of her freshman year of high school that she didn’t want to

Exceeding Expectations
Extraordinary First Time Finish
Lori Miller and Lori Fenton are two women who continue to stay in the game. They surprised themselves by finishing first in their class in the 30th annual Maumee Valley TriAdventure Race held this past May in Defiance, Ohio. They exceeded their expectations by crossing the finish line in five hours and 55 minutes– a solid 40 minutes ahead of the other 11 female teams. “We had never participated in this kind of event and we are very happy with our results. It was a nice surprise,” states Fenton. “It was also great to compete with a partner and be part of a team. I could not have done it without my friend Lori pushing me.” The two women biked 36 miles, paddled six miles in a double kayak and hiked eight miles with backpacks weighing 20 percent of their individual body weight. “This was an adventure that tested different skill sets,” Miller pointed out. Miller, who juggles two jobs as a single mother, said she likes doing something out of the ordinary once a year. She has been active
her entire life and was a three-sport athlete through high school. Currently her training routines consist of 5Ks, weight training, biking, rollerblading and hiking. She also kayaks in the summer. “Northwest Ohio provides some great resources for all of those activities, including the Metroparks which is where I do most of my outdoor activities. Competing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is what has carried me through a lot of adversity,” she states. “When things get tough, it is not just the body that carries you through, it is also the mind. I had to be mentally tough to face and beat cancer 15 years ago, and that has directly correlated into never giving up during a race.” As they hover around the 50 mark in age, there has never been a thought to slow down but to continue in the game of life as strong healthy women who exceed expectations personally and professionally. Kids Ask the Darndest Questions
Oh, boy. I look at him, hug him, breathe. “Well that’s a good question,” I reply, pausing for some time. I Kids ask the darndest questions. Cold Drinks for Hot Summer Nights Crisp, Fruity Sangria By Jennifer Ruple Peach-Blackberry Sangria Nothing cools off a steamy summer evening like a refreshing, fruity pitcher of Sangria. Computer Repair Truths
The Personal Touch Helps
In my ten years working within the computer repair industry I have run across countless clients with difficult computer problems. One of the toughest questions I sometimes have to answer is, “Where should my parents, who live on the other side of the country, take their computer for repairs?” The answers may surprise you. The perception that computer technicians are mathematical geniuses or even “demi-wizards” is far from reality. While it is true it takes a special kind of person with technical knowledge and experience to be a computer technician, what distinguishes us in our industry is our personalities, patience, communication, and perhaps our honesty. A Computer Geek with Personality Why is personality, patience and communication so important? Inevitably the person who is experiencing computer issues is also suffering from frustration. Let’s face it, when a computer isn’t doing what it is supposed to do, it becomes extremely frustrating. A technician who has the right personality can make all the difference in resolving your issues and calming your frustrations. Every customer comes with their own level of computer knowledge and skills, and its the job of a good technician to clearly communicate to that individual. The last thing a customer needs is to be further frustrated with complicated and mysterious computer jargon. A good technician will listen to their customer, understand their issues, get a feeling for their level of computer knowledge and communicate in a way that satisfies their needs while lowering their level of frustration. Pre-Search for Help While honesty is the most obvious quality needed by a good technician, unfortunately it may be the most difficult quality to find. With honesty comes trust, and trust takes time to build. My advice is to find a trustworthy repair business before your computer takes on a problem. Walk into the store, talk to the technicians and ask questions. Try to get a feeling for how they communicate and how they can help if you need to bring a computer in for repairs. I ache right now from spending two hours removing grass to expand a planting bed. Some people retire comfortably into painting, pottery or volunteering at the hospital. Some greet at the bigbox-stores, and some deliver x-rays for ProMedica. What did I do? I opened a landscape design and installation business. Duh! But there is nothing . . . nothing like the creativity, the satisfaction, the jubilation of creating something in nature. Creating something that challenges your sense of the aesthetic, your (supposed) knowledge of the nature of living things, your creativity and sense of design. Gardening! But if you decide to venture down this iffy and often tiring avenue, make your job a bit easier by having the right tools to do the job. As the captain of the Titanic said at dinner the first night out from shore . . . “Trust me. I’m a professional!” Your Gardening Needs: A good, sharp set of hand pruners There are two types, anvil and by-pass. Look at your current clippers. If the two blades slide past each other as they cut, they are by-pass pruners. You want these. If one blade hits against an anvillike second side, these are anvil pruners, and the blade does not cut, it crushes. Throw these away, or We Make it Worry Free

put them back on the rack. Which brand? There is only one. Felco #2 is from a Swiss manufacturer with surgical steel blades that never seem to dull. Go online and find them. I used to worry that I would offend local businesses that carried other brands, but I don’t anymore. They should carry Felco. It’s the best. A good set of longhandled pruners, with good, strong fiberglass handles Use them for small tree branches. Most brands are ok if the handles are fiberglass and the blades stainless steel. A good round-blade shovel with a fiberglass shaft and one-piece shovel blade Look carefully at how the blade and handle are connected, and if you are skeptical, buy a better one. I have broken at least a dozen shovels, and remember that Sears Brands will replace one that breaks. I have bought one shovel, though I have owned a dozen or more. Cowhide, deerhide, or similar gloves Gloves will be your best friends. Cloth gloves are worthless, since glass, bee stingers, rose thorns, sharp mulch pieces go right through them. I wear a size medium, and it’s not a sign of your manhood (or womanhood) if you don’t wear an ‘extra-large.’ Be sure they fit and for crying out loud, wear them any time you work outdoors in the yard. I go through a half-dozen pairs a season. Pay a bit more, and never, never do anything without them. My soft, still-intact hands are a testimonial! Boomer, cyclist, outdoor adventurer and beer enthusiast, Wiley Bird, who was featured in our May edition, is now a medal winner. He recently took home three medals in cycling races at the Senior Olympics in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Bird was awarded a bronze in the 5k, bronze in the 10k, and gold in the 20k. No longer will you have to go searching through the house looking for something to tie up that brush you cut from the tree. It will be your longtime friend on the shelf. A Garden Bench This is the last required tool I suggest you buy. Because most importantly after all the hard work, you must learn to sit down, and just enjoy the sights, the sounds, and the beauty of what you have created. Gardening is a Boomer’s paradise! Don’t try to save a few bucks by buying cheap tools. You will pay in the long run! Now grow and enjoy!
