Visit Sylvania Township’s Eagle Creek Plat 4 Opens Soon ~ Open House August 21 ~ 2-4 p.m.
Tom Schlachter, land developer, offers a slightly different twist on the story Julie Fisher, licensed Realtor, offers. And Doug Howard, builder, agrees with both of them! In 2013 Tom and Julie were discussing the potential sale of Tom’s lots. Julie offered her expert opinion: “We need spec homes on the lots so buyers can actually experience the beauty of life at Eagle Creek.” And Tom agreed! The story varies as to who and when Tom and Julie chose Doug Howard Builders to kick off this gorgeous Sylvania Township subdivision next to Eagle Creek. Julie claims it was her idea and Tom happily asserts they both decided at the same moment. So, in 2013 this winning trio of professionals created six spec homes. This year they will create 50. Clearly the combination of experience, skill, and caring shows in each new home built and smart home buyers want to enjoy life in homes built with heart. Doug started building in 1992 for his Uncle Gene Patton, recently deceased. “I learned the business from the ground up,” said Doug. “I have a reputation for listening to my families. At the end of the day, I want them to know we really care.” Browse through his website at www.doughowardbuilders.com for examples of his talent. Tom says, “We take pride in the fit and finish - the real quality and value of our homes. Doug knows style and keeps up with the latest things, like walk-in pantries. Color, texture, tile, flooring, open floor plans - Doug uses
the newest features when he builds. I like a big kitchen,” he confesses. “Everyone winds up in the kitchen.” The Eagle Creek subdivision has sold quickly; just one home is available in Plat 3. Construction is in
progress for Plat 4 on beautiful lots for homes that are second to none. In Plat 4 ground is being broken on eight spec homes, both two story and ranches, priced from $255 to 330,000. Julie Fisher of ReMax Masters is the pro who brings it all together. She is well-versed in fitting families with the home that offers everything they need. Her warm, caring personality and experience in real estate have made her essential to the overwhelming success of Eagle Creek. “With property in Sylvania becoming a premium, and the great school system Sylvania offers, Eagle Creek is the first place buyers should look,” she said. “Our Eagle Creek team is down-to-earth and really wants to create satisfied home owners.” Julie brought her son, Jake Riley, into her business to learn the details of providing real customer service to families. Jake is a recent St. Francis de Sales graduate. Julie, Doug, and Tom are completing finishing touches on a Red Cross Charity home. Proceeds from the sale will go directly to the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio. Many materials and service providers have donated untold quantities of items and labor to build this gorgeous home with Doug Howard’s vision. “This home is sold, but will be available to view at the fall Parade of Homes,” said Julie. Mark your calendar for the August 21 open house at 9833 Talonswood Court from 2 to 4 p.m. Or call Julie at 419-343-8834 for a private tour.

Down the hatch
Cooking with New Mexico green chiles By Jennifer Ruple
It’s green chile harvest time in New Mexico! Even though we are halfway across the country, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the celebration of these delightful fruits here in the Midwest. The most famous is the Hatch chile, which is only grown in Hatch, New Mexico. The small town, located in the southern half of the state, lies along the Rio Grande where its soil and proximity to water make the perfect combination for growing chiles. Fresh chile peppers come in many varieties and degrees of hotness. Roasting will bring out the depth of their flavor and tame some of their heat. The end result is a more mild, smoky and bold-flavored food that can be used in sauces, incorporated into stews and casseroles, or simply as a topping for burgers and breakfast burritos. If you have trouble locating fresh chiles in these parts, you can order some from The Hatch Green Chile Store, www.hatch-green-chile.com. Or, if you must, canned green chiles are available in most grocery stores. Trust me though, there is nothing in the world like the aroma of fresh chiles roasting…absolutely addictive! Hatch Chile con Queso Use this cheese and chile mixture as a dip with tortilla chips or spoon into warm flour tortillas, roll and enjoy! 2 cups grated cheeses - such as 1 tomato, seeded and chopped Chihuahua, Asadero, 2 roasted Hatch green chiles, Monterey Jack and cheddar peeled, seeded and chopped ½ cup sour cream ⅛ teaspoon garlic powder In a medium saucepan, combine cheeses and sour cream over low heat until cheese is melted. Stir continuously to prevent scorching. Stir in the tomatoes, chiles and garlic powder. Tip: I needed to stir the mixture for quite a while to bind the cheese and sour cream. It was worth the wait though. (Recipe adapted from centralmarket.com)
Green Chile Cheeseburgers A long tradition in New Mexico is topping your burger with green chiles. This practice will add flavor and an extra layer of juiciness. Serves 6.
2 pounds freshly ground beef chuck 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
6 slices Monterey Jack cheese 2 cups chopped, roasted green chiles, warmed 6 buns
Toppings of your choice
Combine beef, salt and pepper and form into six patties. Grill until almost done, top with green chiles and then cheese. (Recipe from newmexicomagazine.com)

Stress less
Tips to regain control of body, mind and mood By John Mark Rankins
John Mark Rankins
When most people think about losing weight and getting in shape they tend to think of deprivation dieting, calorie counting, militant exercise, and sheer willpower. However, what people don’t realize is that mental stressors can trigger a fat-storage response even more so than those things
previously mentioned. Equally important, weight gain from stress is considered to be the most dangerous type of weight, typically belly fat, and is associated with a host of health concerns. Thus, reducing stress is vital, both to start and to sustain weight loss and emotional health. Here are a few of my top tips to stress less, lose weight, and regain control of your mind and mood: Get up earlier. Nothing is worse than starting your day in frantic state. Wake up early to allow time to pray/meditate, review your goals and priorities for the day, and to eat a good breakfast. Work out. Studies show, and I am personally convinced, that properly stressing our physical body will alleviate mental stress. I work out after work to shake off the day and reboot my mental state for my evening.
SEPTEMBER 2016
Eat a balance diet. The formula to follow is a clean protein, fiber, and healthy fat built into each meal. This diet will help regulate blood glucose levels to be slow and steady throughout the day. Simplify. Learn to say NO to the unimportant so that you can say yes to the things that matter the most. Most of us are unduly stressed by our own doing or undoing—if you will. Disassociate. Remove or at least reduce your exposure to negative, toxic people in your life. Let them know your ears are not dumpsters. Perhaps you’ll help them reshape their attitude? Pamper. Take some time and money for your own pleasure. Again the happiest people seem to find the time to take care of themselves as well as all the important people in their life. You are worth it! Unplug. On a regular basis and at least one hour before bed. Get off those stinking devices and screens and enjoy real relationships, nature, music or whatever you love about life.

Working during retirement
Six jobs you may be overlooking By Jeff Bucher What do school kids in the summer and retirees have in common? For many, it’s having lots of time and not knowing what to do with it. Now that kids are starting to go back to school, retirees have an indefinite amount of time to contend with. Jeff Bucher Worse still for retirees, many don’t know if they can afford the time they have left, which may not be yielding a satisfying lifestyle. After all the technical details I review with clients and their finances, such as protecting and growing their money, I sometimes offer a bit of unexpected advice: consider your employment options. Many people who take my advice often do so more for overall happiness than money. Work gives us structure, purpose and a social network. Here is a list of fun job options that retirees often find appealing. • Golf course: This is a popular option since so many retirees love to golf. And, if you are a morning person, work at a golf course is perfectly suited for you. Some popular jobs available at a golf course for retirees include golf shop staff, ranger, starters and golf course maintenance. • Retail: A smiling face and a pleasant disposition has earned many retirees positions as greeters at
places like Wal-Mart, but there are other stores that may better fit your personality. That may include cosmetics at Macy’s or the shoe department at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Think about where you like to shop. • Sporting venue: If you love sports, consider being an usher at a venue. Ushers assist fans to their seats and help answer any questions the fans may have. You might have to walk up and down steps, so if that’s difficult for you to do, find out beforehand whether the job involves steps. The job may have perks, such as free tickets. • Tour guide: A tour guide’s job is to introduce people to places that they are unfamiliar with, which may include wineries, museums and a city’s historical locations. • Theme park / zoo: If you want to brag about your job to your grandkids, look into the local zoo or theme park. Some of the most popular jobs for retirees at these parks include ticket takers, working at a merchandise stand or helping assist guests at an information booth. • Your current or former job: This one may throw you for a loop, but it could be perfect. You’ll likely maintain the same salary as the rest of your earning years; it’s something you already know and are good at; and, many people derived much satisfaction from their profession. You may find new freedom in knowing that this job is more optional than before, which may engender a sense of freedom and, perhaps, an outside-the-box mentality.
