Better mending than ending. Nowadays, the world changes fast. So does fashion. Consumerism is reaching its pick, using our planet’s resources and polluting the Earth more rapidly than ever before. It is also a reason of many people’s latest concern about solutions to this problem. Everybody can contribute to changing the situation, so can fashion industry and designers. Fashion can be a successful tool to change the “game of more” into “game of better”1. First step is to ask oneself a question: How to reuse existing resources to create a sustainable product which would attract customers’ attention? A solution presented in the brief is to reuse second hand clothes to make a new, functional product. I would like to focus on casual, relaxing clothing, which would be comfortable and practical; a piece of garment that would fit contemporary urban nomads2. More specifically, I would like to focus on using the technique of patchwork to create sweatshirts and hoodies.

Basic rules regarding the lifecycle of the 2nd wear:

1.

Fabrics are sourced from second hand garments-at least 70% of each new style comes from recycled clothes

2.

Only styles of good quality are used to assure long life of new garments

3.

Trims are sourced from old clothes, unless impossible-they are replaced with new ones

4.

Fabrics are washed before being re used

5.

Washing takes place in 30OC with biodegradable liquids, workers use protecting equipment

6.

Leftovers from a final garment are kept in order to be reused with future styles

7.

If thrown away, leftovers are utilized safety with the ecological mindset

8.

Customers of new garments are given full information on fabrics (composition, production place of the old fabrics, etc.)

9.

Returns of the final products are accepted and fully refundable if the clothing has not been used after buying

10.

Used products can also be returned, partly refundable

The 2nd wear collection would be characterised as: functional, simple, ecological, comfortable.

Re-cycled. Re-DESIGNED.

Fabrics fitting the design would be: •

cotton (240-340 g/m2) and polyester

(as found in many second hand garments)

plush cotton

cord cotton

viscose (e.g. underlingin. finishing)

Trimmings would be reused if possible (cords, buttons, ribs, zippers for ornaments). New trimmings would be used only if there is no possibility to reuse them from second hand garments, e.g. some snap buttons.

Shapes would be slightly relaxed. There would be asymmetric details and prolonged neck rim (hoods or tubes/chimneys). Detachable elements can be added to designs to change the shape. The length would fall until hips or mid-tight.
