SYMINGTON FAMILY ESTATES: ONE OF THE WORLD’S
LEADING QUALITY PORT PRODUCERS
We are a family of British and Portuguese origin that has lived and worked in Portugal since the 19th century. Our family business – run by the 4th and 5th generation – is founded on a deep commitment to Portugal’s people, its lands and its wines. Today there are 10 family members working across the business, committed to producing the finest ports and wines and building on the achievements of the previous generations.
We are the leading vineyard owners in the Douro Valley with 26 vineyard estates covering a total of 2,233 ha of which 1,076 ha are under vine. Our family owns four of the leading port brands, Graham’s, Cockburn’s, Dow’s and Warre’s, as well as a portfolio of Douro wines consisting of Quinta do Vesúvio, Quinta do Ataíde, Altano, Prats & Symington, and the recently launched Pequeno Dilema, Ilustres Desconhecidos and Bom Malandro.
We also produce a range of wines from our estate in the Portalegre subregion of the Alto Alentejo, Quinta da Fonte Souto, and have recently acquired an estate, Casa de Rodas, in the prestigious Monção and Melgaço sub-region of the Vinho Verde DOC.
Bringing together different winemaking skills and traditions, we also explore partnerships with prestigious winemakers with the aim to explore new and exceptional wines. Our family has also celebrated a partnership with Caves Transmontanas, who produce the well renowned Douro sparkling wine Vértice, as well as acquiring (in equal parts with Berry Brothers and Rudd) Hambledon Vineyard, widely considered to be one of the leading English sparkling wine producers.
GRAHAM’S PORT
The history of Graham’s is the story of two families of Scottish descent: the Grahams and the Symingtons. The company was founded in Porto by brothers William and John Graham in 1820 with the ambition of making exceptional ports. They rapidly became one of the most highly regarded producers and their success culminated in 1890 with the acquisition of the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the heart of the Douro Valley and the construction of a small stone winery at the estate – where all Graham’s ports have been made since. In the same year, the company built a new lodge downriver near the coast in Vila Nova de Gaia to age its wines. Meanwhile, in 1882, nineteen-year-old Andrew James ‘AJ’ Symington sailed from Scotland to Porto to work for the Graham family.
Although AJ left Graham’s shortly after to establish his own port business, his grandsons acquired the company from the Graham family in 1970 when it was offered for sale. Since then, the Symington family have further developed and consolidated Graham’s reputation for producing superb ports.
Today Graham’s leads the premium, super-premium and luxury port category in travel retail, and alongside its highly coveted Vintage Ports, Graham’s produces an exceptional range of Aged Tawny Ports and limited bottlings of exquisite Single Harvest Tawnies.

GRAHAM’S 50 YEAR OLD TAWNY PORT
Carefully watched over by two generations of Master Blenders, Peter and Charles Symington, Graham’s 50 Year Old Tawny Port is a testament to the unparalleled craftmanship and dedication that has gone into nurturing the wines that comprise this blend.
Two of the wine’s component lots have particular significance:
The first is a wine from 1969 known as ‘CAS Reserve’. It was originally set aside by Peter Symington to mark the birth of his son, Charles, whose initials give it its name.
The second is comprised of wines from 1970 and 1973. Blended in 1982, over 50% has evaporated throughout the ensuing decades, resulting in astonishing concentration.
Graham’s Blend Series represents a fresh and innovative take on port. Leading the way are Blend Nº5 White and Blend Nº12 Ruby Ports – the first wines we’ve blended specifically for mixing.
A contemporary feel and award-winning design from fashion illustrator António Soares gives the Blend Series
a striking and versatile presence on the cocktail scene and in the on-trade, while also standing out and offering something exciting in the off-trade.
The Blend Series marks a new chapter in the history of port. It helps fuel the invention and creativity of the consumer, uplifting any #portmoment regardless of the setting, season, or occasion.

From resurrecting traditional Portuguese grape varieties that were all but forgotten, to pioneering uncharted areas of the Douro’s unforgiving landscape, being unexpected is what has kept Cockburn’s at the forefront of the port trade for more than 200 years.
A new generation at Cockburn’s challenged our winemakers to produce a range of experimental ports. Ports that are fresh, lively, and can stand on their own two feet regardless of how you drink them: mixed or neat. Ports without limitations.
They came back with three young, fresh & vibrant premium ports: White Heights, Tawny Eyes, and Ruby Soho.
Celebrating new serves and new drinking moments, welcome to Tails of the Unexpected.

COCKBURN’S PORT
A long history of doing things our own way Cockburn’s has always questioned the so-called ‘rules’ for making port. Back in 1815, Robert and John Cockburn, two brothers from Scotland, bypassed the merchant’s fair in Porto and bought the very best grapes directly from farmers upriver in the Douro.
Ever since, we’ve done things our way, declaring vintage years whenever we feel it’s right, regardless of what rival port houses might think, and, in 1969, we launched Special Reserve, bridging the gap between rarified vintage and ruby port. The result of this non-conformist approa ch? Even better port for everyone.
The quality of the wine – that is the first thing to be looked to.

DOW’S PORT
For over two centuries the name of Dow has been associated with the finest port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, the Symington family has built on the legacy of the preceding Silva and Dow families. Generations of Symington winemakers have worked at the Dow’s vineyards: Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, creating from them Dow’s superbly concentrated wines that are intense and tannic when young, maturing towards a superlative racy elegance with age and scented with violet and mint aromas.
Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognisable hallmark of the wines from this great port house.
WARRE’S PORT
Founded in 1670, Warre’s is the oldest British port producer. Since its foundation, Warre’s has always been a pioneer of the port trade. In the mid-eighteenth century Warre’s launched the first port brand, Warrior Port, and in the mid-1990’s Warre’s revolutionized the port sector with the launch of Otima, which was designed to appeal specifically to a younger target market.
With a fresh and elegant style, Warre’s Ports are known for their structure, finesse and softly perfumed nose.
DOC DOURO
The Symington family were amongst the pioneers in the development of Douro wines in the late 1990’s, producing Chryseia, Port Scriptum (together with the Prats family), Quinta do Vesúvio, Quinta do Ataíde and Altano. Chryseia was the first Portuguese red wine to ever appear in the Wine Spectator list of the 100 Best Wines of the World.
The family are leading innovators in Douro viticulture and winemaking with two experimental vineyards, with 53 different grape varieties, many of them rare and almost forgotten, as part of a long-term study program to preserve indigenous varieties.
Additionally, Symington is the leading organic vineyard farmer in the north of Portugal, conducting R&D studies to push the boundaries of organic viticulture. All remaining vineyards are farmed under a strict minimum intervention protocol called Integrated Production Management, certified annually by SATIVA.

WELCOME TO THE GANG
Bom Malandro is a wine brand created in reverse. Instead of the usual grape varieties, estates, or terroir, we started with the story of our unmistakable main character – true to our belief that a fresh wine deserves a fresh approach.
Bom Malandro expresses how we feel about modern life: we’re constantly on the go and it can be exhausting. It can also be easy to forget that the best things often happen when we take some time to stand still and be in the moment.
Being a bom malandro is to embrace the silliness in the everyday. To be spontaneous, and take some risks.
Wonderfully vibrant
Bom Malandro and the gang know what they like, and that’s Douro DOC: expressive, fresh, and unmistakably Douro – just like them. Bom Malandro wines are traditional Douro blends made using indigenous grape varieties grown in vineyards located at a minimum of 400m altitude in the Cima Corgo region.
This altitude gives the wines their distinctive freshness, balance, and fruit-forward profiles. Young, fresh, and typically Douro – just like them. Perfect for sharing. Perfect for plotting.
DOC ALENTEJO
Quinta da Fonte Souto is the first property acquired by the Symington family outside of the Douro region. With 207 hectares, of which 43 are planted with vines, the Quinta is in the Portalegre subregion of the Alto Alentejo in southern Portugal.
The first vintage under Symington family ownership was the 2017, and the grapes were vinified on site in the estate’s well-equipped winery. The debut vintage couldn’t have been more auspicious, producing some very good white and red wines.
The exceptionally hot and dry debut year showed the benefit of the vineyard’s altitude, which ranges from 490 to 550 metres.
‘Fonte’ means source of water or fountain In Portuguese, and ‘Souto’ is a chestnut grove. The combination of the two words in the estate’s name symbolises the abundance of water from the estate’s natural springs and its beautiful chestnut groves.
Quinta da Fonte Souto is located in the Portalegre sub-region, which represents a different Alentejo. In contrast to the hot and dry Alentejo plain, Portalegre is situated in the northeast of the region at a higher altitude. The estate's 42 hectares of vineyard are close to the São Mamede Range (1,025 metres), which is the highest point in Portugal south of the Tagus River. The schist and granite soils and the mature low-yielding vines produce superbly structured and balanced wines whose main characteristics are freshness, complexity, elegance and the promise of great longevity.
NEW HORIZONS
TWO NEW WINEMAKING PARTNERSHIPS
In 2022, Symington Family Estates formed two new partnerships that open up exciting new horizons for the future.
The family invested in in the business of Caves Transmontanas, the owner of one of the most prestigious Portuguese brands, Vértice, the famous Douro sparkling wine that has collected numerous awards over the years. Vértice’s wines have a unique profile as they benefit from long ageing periods before disgorgement, sometimes decades – giving them a uniquely elegant profile.
The Symington family has also acquired an estate in the prestigious Monção and Melgaço sub-region of the Vinho Verde DOC in northern Portugal – named Casa de Rodas. Production will start on a range of Alvarinho wines from the 27.5 hectare vineyard with legendary Vinho Verde producer Anselmo Mendes as winemaker. The two families have decided to create a new company, with equal shareholding, to distribute the wines produced from the property. The joint venture also acquired the renowned Vinho Verde brand Contacto, produced by Anselmo Mendes.
