Brand New Matting for Harpur Centre Syncros Entrance Matting Systems incorporates The Harpur Centre logo into Milliken entrance matting without additional cost, while maintaining functionality.

Replacing the entrance matting seemed like another routine job at The Harpur Centre, until Syncros Entrance Matting Systems stepped in with an effective, eye-catching solution.

For years The Harpur Centre, Bedford’s premier shopping destination, had used a functional navy barrier matting to protect the centre’s terrazzo flooring from the elements. While it served the purpose of keeping the floor clean, dry and free from hazards, the colour was uninspiring. Housed in a Grade II* listed building, The Harpur Centre not only provides extensive shopping facilities, but also serves as a community hub, hosting events and supporting local charities. With an average weekly footfall of 150,000, it is vital that, as well as being safe, the entrance is as inviting as possible. “The matting was coming to the end of its life, so we opened up the tender process, expecting to replace like for like until Gary Clarke from Syncros presented us with an alternative,” says Harpur Centre Manager, Samantha Laycock. Seeing the different colours that Syncros had to offer within the Milliken FormaTM range encouraged the team at The Harpur Centre to investigate a more creative design,

and what began as a throw away comment about including their brand on the matting became a real possibility. “In incorporating our logo we were still using the same number of tiles, just a combination of colours at no additional cost,” continues Samantha. The modular nature of the Milliken FormaTM system means that patterns can be included in the design, which can be cut to fit any area without affecting its excellent scraping and absorbent properties. Damaged sections can be replaced cost effectively by changing individual tiles, rather than the complete mat. With a ready supply of Milliken products held in stock, Syncros was able to install the matting immediately without inconvenience to customers or tenants. “The centre closed at the usual time with the installation team standing by to proceed,” recalls Samantha. “Whilst removing the original matting, they laid out the new design on the mall floor and cut the required Milliken FormaTM tiles for the logo. It was brilliant to watch them work!” Syncros’ Gary Clarke was on

hand to ensure that Samantha was happy with the design prior to full installation. “With everything under control, we left the team to work their magic and looked forward to seeing the finished result the next morning,” adds Samantha. And what about the results? “The matting was the talk of the centre. It was exciting to see Store Managers walk through the doors and stop to admire the new floor. It really has extended our branding and enhanced the aesthetic look of the entrance.” Months later, the new matting still looks good, even after the busy Christmas trading period. Furthermore, Samantha calculates that the resulting reduction in cleaning costs means that the mat will have paid for itself within a year. “We found Syncros to be the most competitively priced bid and best value for money,” concludes Samantha. “They were happy to work closely with us to achieve the finished result.
