Luck Be a Lady: Barbara Sinatra's Life with Frank BY WENDY HOLDEN | OCT 16, 2019 Born in Missouri soon after the Great Depression, Barbara Ann Blakeley’s happiest childhood days were spent “in [her] grandfather’s general store where the all-male members of the ‘Spit ‘N Argue Club’ gathered around the pot-bellied stove chewing tobacco and complaining about the price of corn.” After relocating with her family to California, Barbara became a typical teenager in bobby socks who sneaked to her local drive-in to listen to Frank’s songs, as Sinatra-mania gripped the country. She went on to open a modelling school, launched her own cosmetics line, and became a consultant to the first Miss Universe pageant. Her son Robert – “the best thing I ever did” – was born in between. When her first marriage to Bob Oliver ended, Barbara found work as a showgirl at the Riviera on the famous Las Vegas strip, where she caught the eye of every man she met, including Zeppo Marx of the Marx Brothers. They married in 1959 and she moved with him to Palm Springs. Frank Sinatra was their next-door neighbour and they socialised frequently with him at cocktail parties and card games. As one of the so-called ‘desert rats’, Barbara grew close to Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, Gregory and Veronique Peck, Dinah Shore, and the Kirk Douglases. She was chatted up by John F Kennedy and met Marilyn Monroe – “the girl with the saddest eyes”. Marx, a jealous womaniser, repeatedly warned Barbara against Frank. Liu Ye, the Metaphorical Window, and Poetics of Painting BY CONTEMPORARY ART | OCT 06, 2019 The window has an enduring presence in art history. A metaphorical portal into liminal spaces, the window has been long employed to invoke a dialogue between perceptual and intellectual vision. These connections bridge the realistic world with spiritual or imagined realms. Liu Ye’s Mondrian and Angel invites powerful associations with the trope of painting as windows to an alternate world. Depicting actual and symbolic windows, the exquisite Mondrian and Angel diffracts multiple views of conceptual and imagined reality. In the upper-centre of the composition Liu Ye incorporates a reference to the founder of NeoPlasticism, with the work Piet Mondrian half-bathed in the intense yellow light of afternoon sun. In the foreground, a winged cherub in contrapposto stance peers through binoculars out a window, of which only one edge is shown. The image of the cherub brings to mind a certain Renaissance notion, comparing the painting and the window as analogous frames through which viewers see the world. All That Glitters: A Fabulous Fusion BY VIVIENNE BECKER | OCT 16, 2019 F rom Chinoiserie to Japonisme, the arts and culture of Asia have captivated Western artists, designers, collectors and connoisseurs for centuries. The great Parisian jewellery houses were intoxicated by the wave of mysterious Orientalism that swept through the decorative arts in the early decades of the 20th century. Today, that East-West connection – and its interchange of ideas and inspirations – has become relevant again, with the emergence of an increased appetite for Western items in Asia. Now, Sotheby’s presents an extraordinary private collection of jewels fusing Asian and Western designs, the most spectacular of which will be offered for sale in Geneva this November. The intensely personal collection, assembled over the course of five decades by a prominent Asian-American collector, shows true connoisseurship in its balance between classic 20th-century jewels set with important gems and more whimsical, fashion-oriented pieces that the collector wore with great pleasure and panache. read entire story at sothebys.com

Cinematic Canvases Fit for the Silver Screen BY CHRISTIAN HOUSE | SEP 26, 2019 The grandeur of the Orientalist realm – North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia – mesmerized a coterie of intrepid 19th-century European artists and, a century later, it had the same effect on half of Hollywood. It is apt then that the Najd Collection of Orientalist paintings , to be offered at Sotheby’s this October, contains canvases that could light up an Odeon. The Najd Collection delivers cinematic compositions – lone figures in dizzying vistas, caravans in transit, bustling scenes of bazaars, characters in contemplation. The region’s enigmatic atmosphere and expansive landscape has attracted many filmmakers, from American mavericks, including George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, to European auteurs, such as Michelangelo Antonioni and Bernardo Bertolucci. What is striking is how painting and film mirror one another in their treatment of the people and places. While shooting Lawrence of Arabia in Jordan in 1962, the British film director David Lean likened his panning shots of riders to a narrative journey (one can see something similar in Riders Crossing the Desert, an enigmatic oil by Jean-Léon Gérôme). And in Hidalgo (2004), another Omar Sharif movie, desert horsemen are pitched against the elements, scenes that recall Eugène Fromentin’s painting Windstorm on the Esparto Plains of the Sahara. “The rightmost horse, like its rider, faces into the wind with stoic determination,” notes Sotheby’s specialist Richard Lowkes. “The wave-like esparto grass adds to the relentless movement.” It’s a stirring scene that demands a soaring soundtrack. read entire story at sothebys.com
