A Reticulated Qing Dynasty Vase That Encompasses China’s Past BY REGINA KRAHL | JUL 5, 2020
How to pay homage to as many classic Chinese art styles as possible while creating a symphonic work of art in contemporary taste? If it sounds like squaring the circle, this is what Jingdezhen’s craftsmen achieved with this piece. To any connoisseur versed in the history of Chinese art the reticulated vase featured in a special upcoming auction must appear like a culmination of centuries of ingenuity in Chinese crafts. Its multiple associations spell ‘Glorious Past’ on so many different levels, that even for the expert viewer it takes a while to unravel them all. Like a stroll through the imperial collection, this vase takes us from archaic bronzes and jades via Longquan celadon and imperial blueand-white to Rococo flower design. What is perhaps most admirable about it – even more than its technical sophistication – is its stylistic coherence, which fuses nostalgic nods to antiquity with fashionable takes on international trends of the day. The extremely small group of pierced, double-walled vases that were produced for the Qianlong Emperor provided probably the greatest technical challenge ever for the potters at the imperial kilns. The complexity of the production process can hardly be overstated and the perfection of the execution is next to miraculous. Works like these could have been developed by the imperial kilns only under the leadership of Tang Ying (1682-1756), who combined superior understanding of the properties of the ceramic medium, vast experience with the intricacies of the production process and an unerring sense of aesthetics, with exceptional ambition... read entire story at sothebys.com
Rembrandt's Self-Portrait and the Art of Reflection BY SOTHEBY'S | JUL 7, 2020 No artist’s face is so instantly recognizable as Rembrandt’s. He recorded his own physiognomy in a great variety of moods and costumes in some eighty paintings, etchings and drawings, and charted its changes with remorseless self-examination, from an ambitious and self-confident youth of 22, to a careworn and prematurely aged old man of 63. It is fitting that such a complex and demanding artist as Rembrandt should have left us with some eighty painted, etched and drawn images of himself, so that we are challenged to look at the artist as we seek to understand his artistic personality. This self-depiction of a confident and successful young artist recently established in Amsterdam is one of the last painted selfportraits by Rembrandt left in private hands, and may be the last that is likely to come to the open market. Bridging the gap between the character studies of the earlier self-portrait heads from his Leiden period, and the elaborate fancy-dress portraits of his subsequent Amsterdam self-portraits of the 1630s, it is a considered and sober self-depiction of the artist just beginning to enjoy the fruits of success as the leading portrait painter in Amsterdam, keen to be seen as the social equal of his affluent and formally dressed clients. David Rothschild’s Minimalist Style BY SOTHEBY'S | JUL 5, 2020
How did you get started in the art world? In 2008 I was studying art history at the University of Miami, and heard about a part-time, clerical role within Sotheby’s Miami regional office. I grew up in New York City, not far from Sotheby’s on York Avenue, and the thought of working for the auction house was always a dream for me. I jumped at the opportunity to interview for the position. The director of the office was a charming, gregarious gentleman, and we developed a good rapport. He offered me the position on the spot, and the next day I began working for Sotheby’s two days a week. What began as a clerical role quickly morphed into a mentorship, and I was very fortunate to begin accompanying the director on visits and appraisals to many of the top art collections in the South Florida region. In a short time, I learned a lot about the business, the role the regional offices played and most importantly, I realized my passion for Modern, post-war and contemporary art and that this was going to be my career path. Diana Scarisbrick on the Art of Gem Engraving BY SOTHEBY'S | JUL 2, 2020 As several stunning examples of engraved gems come to auction in the upcoming Small Wonders: Early Gems and Jewels sale opening on 3 July, Head of Auction Sales for Sotheby's London, Christopher Mason, speaks to Diana Scarisbrick FSA, one of the world’s most admired and respected antique jewelry experts, about her unique scholarly journey and why people throughout the ages have been drawn to the art of gem engraving. Diana has a particular love of engraved gems and, together with Sir John Boardman, has catalogued many of the most important collections, including those of the Dukes of Devonshire, Marlborough and Northumberland. She was appointed Research Associate at the University of Oxford’s Classical Art Research Centre in 2013. Diana has written extensively, with Diamond Jewelry: 700 Years of Glory and Glamour being published only last year.
