Effective disease control in sugar beet

Syngenta is one of the world’s leading companies with more than 26,000 employees in over 90 countries dedicated to our purpose: Bringing plant potential to life.

CROP PROTECTION

Long-lasting control of all major foliar diseases SPYRALE gives long-lasting control of all the major foliar diseases affecting sugar beet. Sugar beet crops must be protected from the damaging effects of foliar diseases if they are to achieve their full yield potential. SPYRALE preserves green leaf cover for longer in the season, allowing your crop to make best use of late sunshine and moisture to build root and sugar yield.

Healthy crops achieve higher yields. Using a triazole fungicide has been shown to increase yield by 5%, even in the absence of disease* Protection from powdery mildew prevents a 1-2% loss in sugar content* SPYRALE assists in canopy management. Strong leaves resist frost damage and canopy collapse * BBRO Fungicide Strategy, 2011

Greener leaves for longer Broad-spectrum disease control SPYRALE’s complementary morpholine and triazole chemistry provides broad‑spectrum control of the main sugar beet diseases – Powdery Mildew, Rust, Ramularia and Cercospora.

Powdery Mildew Powdery Mildew is the most damaging foliar disease – early infections can reduce yields by up to 20% (Source: BBRO Crop Bulletins), with a major impact on sugar content. 9.0

lifted crops. Follow BBRO advice on disease development through the critical parts of the season.

SPYRALE is best applied when warnings are issued, before symptoms are apparent. However, SPYRALE does have a curative effect on early mildew and will reverse early symptoms. For effective disease control, a two-spray strategy is recommended for all but the earliest-

Adjusted yields from a BBRO trial lifted on the 13th December 2011 highlighted a general trend of increasing sugar content with increasing fungicide rates, with the best results coming from a two-spray strategy.

Application advice

The best nozzles depend on the target:

Recent Syngenta trials examined the influence of water volume and nozzle choice on the amount of active ingredient deposited on the outer and central leaves of the crop.

• F or overall coverage the DEFY 03 is the most consistent.

• R etention goes down as water volume increases. Optimal water volume is 100 l/ha.

• A good low drift option is the AMISTAR nozzle.

• Increasing water volume increases penetration to the centre at the expense of retention on the outer leaves.

Contact

• The more water applied, the less fungicide sticks to the plants.

• N arrow-angled nozzles gave the best results – DEFY 03 and VEG 04.

• F or hitting the central, small leaves the VEG 04 nozzle is best.
