Lab Management Course for Influenza Bangkok, Thailand - February 27th to March 2nd, 2012 Background

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in partnership with the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) of Thailand in Nonthaburi, Thailand are sponsoring a laboratory management training course for influenza laboratories in Asia and Europe. The countries have been working with CDC through bi-lateral cooperative agreements to build capacity to detect, diagnosis, and respond to influenza and other respiratory diseases. The laboratory management course will be held in Bangkok, Thailand; February 27, 2012 to March 2, 2012 at a location soon to be announced. The course is designed to help laboratories achieve, maintain, and improve global influenza surveillance systems by teaching Influenza laboratory managers and staff on various laboratory management topics. Course

The course will provide information on a variety of laboratory management topics. The course format allows participants to gain knowledge and information for implementation within their own laboratories. The course topics will include; Human Resources Basics, Biosafety for Lab Managers, Quality Assurance and Quality Control, Inventory Management, Specimen Collection and Processing, Laboratory Testing and Test Result Reporting, and NIC Designation. A total of 35 participants from Asia and Europe will attend the course. The course is being offered in English only. Laboratories eligible to attend will be notified by invitation. Learning Objectives

Students completing the course will be able to: Understand the role and responsibilities of becoming or maintaining a National Influenza Center (NIC) designation. Describe key aspects of laboratory biosafety, including risk assessment, incident management, and biosafety level three biosafety and security practices for influenza. Develop a strategy to implement Quality Assurance and Quality Control best practices. Describe and develop an inventory management system. Describe specimen collection and processing best practices for influenza detection. Schedule
