PRODUCED IN ASSOCIATION WITH
Flood Re is a joint initiative between the Government and insurers making sure flood cover, as part of household insurance policies, is more available and affordable.
More than 350,000 homes have benefitted since Flood Re’s launch
1 in 6 properties in the UK are at risk of flooding
Since launch, availability of flood insurance policies for those with prior flood claims has increased significantly. Before Flood Re, only 9% of householders with previous flood claims could get 2 or more quotes, now 100% can get 10 or more quotes. From April 2022, Flood Re will be launching its Build Back Better scheme which will support insurers to repair homes that have flooded with a range of property flood resilience measures. Repairs like these can help hold back future flood waters and make it easier to repair your home after a flood. This will be available through insurance companies who sign-up to the scheme.

Welcome to CIWEM’s 2022 consultants and contractors file I AM PROUD TO write this introduction to CIWEM’s Consultants and Contractors File 2022 because it showcases companies that are tackling climate change from the front line. Their activities bring hope that we can reach a low-carbon existence and build resilience against climate extremes. The responsible and creative approaches they adopt are also bringing recovery of our natural world. Having attended COP26 in Glasgow in 2021 it became very clear to me that humanity’s future on earth is in the hands of practical people. World leaders can and should create the pathways for change but the companies you read about in this directory are the companies that actually bring about that change. The world of consulting and contracting is in a place that we often refer to as being a “nice problem to have, but a problem nonetheless”. The industry faces very high demand for services but a shortage of people with the skills to deliver them. A significant way to address this is for organisations to invest in professional development of their existing people. This grows the in-house skill base and sends a positive message to prospective employees. Initial and continuing professional development are the core purpose of CIWEM’s services. The companies in this file are making a clear declaration how important it is to be aligned with this purpose. Successful companies are those that are accessible to people from a wide range of sectors and backgrounds. The water and environment sectors are becoming ever more appealing to people embarking on their careers and growing numbers of people are retraining to enter these sectors. These people are also choosing CIWEM for career support and this file makes companies visible to them, as well as to prospective clients seeking services. Whether you are seeking to engage with the best or to work for the best, where better to start than with the companies in this file. Terry Fuller is chief executive of CIWEM

ORACLE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTS LTD (OEE) core strength is in the assessment and mitigation of environmental impacts, risks and liabilities associated with pollution incidents and historically contaminated land. The expertise within OEE provides a focal point for companies requiring technical advice and support, particularly with respect to the mitigation and assessment of risks to human health and the water environment. Our services cover all aspects of land contamination, including pollution incidents involving impacts to soils, water and air, pollution incident response, oil spill forensics, assessment of risks to human health and the water environment, and the investigation and remediation of contaminated soils and waters. We continually invest in research and development of new equipment seeking innovative ways to address contaminated soils and water. For example, our rapidly deployable Mobile Treatment Unit has been developed to allow us to effectively recover oil from groundwater and surface water following inland oil spills, to have complete control and containment once set up, and most importantly to recover oil efficiently and continuously. We have also developed in-house remediation systems for in-situ soil remediation using techniques including soil vapour extraction, chemical oxidation and bioremediation. Our groundwater remediation systems and experience includes rapidly deployable oil-water recovery systems, air sparging, vacuum enhanced NAPL recovery, dual phase extraction, surfactant flushing and recovery, chemical oxidation and passive/reactive barriers. We are a highly respected independent company founded on technical expertise and on the passion and commitment of our staff.

OTT HYDROMET Global efforts are currently underway to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases in order to limit the effects of global warming. Even if these efforts are successful, it will also be necessary for nations to adapt to the effects of climate change, and one of the most important adaptations will be to develop early warning systems to protect lives and property from extreme weather events. This has been a key focus at OTT HydroMet for decades, and the company is now able to supply everything from remote, low-power sensors and dataloggers, to the latest satellite and cellular communications equipment, along with powerful data management software. The main aim of COP26 in Glasgow was ‘to keep 1.5 alive’ (rise in average global temperature) but in his concluding remarks COP President Alok Sharma said: “We have kept 1.5 alive, but this is a fragile win.” This is because the emissions reductions agreed by countries, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), will not achieve the target 1.5. According to Climate Action Tracker, even with the latest NDCs temperature rises may exceed 2.4oC by the end of this century. In the UK, the Met Office has predicted that we will experience warmer and wetter winters, hotter and drier summers, and more frequent and intense weather extremes. Raised water levels, flooding and extreme wind events can all pose a serious threat to lives, buildings, transport infrastructure, power supplies, communications etc. It is fortunate therefore that recent technological advances have enabled the development of remote monitoring networks that are able to detect dangerous conditions at an early stage, and provide timely alerts so that action can be taken to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather. In summary, while OTT HydroMet equipment is helping the world to monitor changes in weather and climate; the company is also developing technologies and early warning systems that enable effective mitigation of the worst effects of climate change.
