BROWNLEE BROTHERS
Brothers in Arms Opening this year’s show are the most exciting pair of brothers to enter the world of professional athletics for many years – the Brownlees...
A
ppearing courtesy of OTE Sports, the Brownlees’ official sports nutrition partner, the champion triathlete siblings will cut the ribbon to officially open the 2019 Show, ahead of appearing on stage for a Q&A - where they will impart their highly valuable advice on what it takes to compete at the very highest level in triathlon. Following the Q&A, the pair will head to the OTE Sports stand to meet and greet with visitors, sign autographs and offer expertise on everything from nutrition to improving swimming technique. Jonny is an Olympic silver and bronze medal winner as well as multiple ITU world champion. He won Olympic 6
bronze in London 2012 and upgraded to silver in Rio 2016 behind his older brother, Alistair. He is a member of the UK Sport Lottery Funded World-Class Performance Squad and trains at the Leeds Performance Centre. Jonny has followed his brother closely, winning European and world junior and U23 honors before breaking in to the senior ranks in 2010. In that year he went from being a talented junior to a senior ITU world sprint champion and a podium finisher in the ITU World Series. He was also an emphatic winner of the U23 world title in Budapest in September 2010. He won the ITU world title in Auckland in 2012 after winning World Series rounds in San Diego, Madrid and Stockholm. He has also finished second in 2011, 2013 and 2016, and third in 2014. In 2016 Jonny finished on the podium in all five of the ITU World Triathlon Series races he featured in leading up
to the Grand Final. He famously ran out of steam within a few hundred metres of the finishing line at the Grand Final in Cozumel, Mexico, and was carried over the line by brother, Alistair. He finished second in the race, and second in the ITU World Series, missing out on the world title by just four points to Mario Mola of Spain. Jonny has been a valuable member of Mixed Relay teams. He has been part of Great Britain’s winning teams at the ITU World Championships in 2011, 2012 and 2014. He helped Team England win Commonwealth Gold in 2014 and silver in 2018. Alistair is the only triathlete to have won two Olympic gold medals. He has been to three Olympic Games, winning gold in London 2012 and Rio 2016. He’s also won world, European and Commonwealth gold medals. He is based at the Leeds Triathlon Performance Centre. The older of the Brownlee Brothers, Alistair became
the first British triathlete to win an Olympic medal since the sport was introduced to the Games in Sydney 2000. Alistair’s younger brother Jonathan won the bronze medal in London, and a silver medal in Rio. He has twice won the ITU World title (2009 and 2011) and has twice won the ITU Mixed Team Relay world title (2011 and 2014). He also won the European title (2010, 2011 & 2014) won the individual and mixed relay titles at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Now also competing over middle distance, Alistair finished second at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in 2018. Alistair was introduced to triathlon by his uncle, Simon Hearnshaw. As a junior, he was a successful fell and cross-country runner, coming second in the English Junior Cross Country Championships and winning the Yorkshire County title on several occasions. 7

SWIM ZONE
Take the Plunge Rick Kiddle, CEO of NOWCA and triathlon champion, gives his Top 5 Tips for anyone wanting to get the most out of their open water swimming race/event!
TRAINING n There’s nothing wrong with training in the pool for an open water swim race/event as it is a great opportunity to improve your speed and endurance (especially if you have a coached session to help with your technique). Time all your swim sessions so you can measure and monitor how you are doing. If you’re doing a big swim (such as the Dock2Dock 10km swim) then you don’t need to actually swim the distance that you have entered until your race/event day – you will however need to have done some longer distance training mixed in with your speed and endurance sets. It is best for you to get some open water swims in under your belt too so you can acclimatise to the different conditions of being outdoors and put your swim technique into action. Worried about the prospect of getting into open water? One of the reasons why NOWCA exists is because we wanted to make swimming outdoors fun and safe, so we’ve teamed up with responsible venues to run our proven and robust safety system which has a raised awareness of who is swimming in the water. NOWCA will have their qualified open water swim coaches out on the pontoon (in the NOWCA swim zone) at various times through the Triathlon Show weekend so please ask them for any advice on training.
SIGHTING n There are no lane lines in a lake, so you do need to keep an eye on where you’re going and on what your competitors are up to! That’s where sighting comes into play – you should lift your head to look where you are going as you turn to breathe (but not on every breath, every other should do the trick). You want to make this a fluid motion with the smallest amount of movement. Try out your sighting technique in the Tri Show open water swim sessions in the 18
Royal Victoria Dock just outside ExCel. Times can be found here: nowca.org/londontrishow2019
BREATHING n In your training it’s best to practise breathing bilaterally (i.e. to a different side with each breath, on an odd number of strokes) to get you used to breathing on different sides as this can help you avoid waves or other swimmers and it can help with your sighting and keeping your strokes balanced. But on race day, breathe every two strokes – you will breathe on one side when you’re going fast. The reason why swimmers use this technique is to ensure enough oxygen enters the body which can help with controlling output to stay on or below the threshold which we try to avoid going over as this slows us down and causes more problems. In the current cold water conditions concentrating and controlling your breathing is vital – try and breathe slowly and calmly when you enter the water then once acclimatised you can start swimming. If you’ve always wanted to try open water swimming in colder water, then why not try it for FREE in our NOWCA swim zone!
EQUIPMENT n ‘Skins or no skins?’ that is the question! Well everybody is different; some people are more susceptible to cold water so it’s all down to individual preference. You should decide what you want to wear for your race and train in it so you can get used to your swimming technique. Pick goggles that fit perfectly and suck to the face without the strap! The strap is just there to hold them in place. This will be more comfortable on a long swim. Make sure you have anti-fog in your goggles.
Try out Zone3’s swim equipment at the NOWCA Swim Zone!
Take part in the first ever Have-A-Go Aquathlon in the Royal Victoria Dock
Wear a bright coloured swim hat so you can be easily spotted by other swimmers and safety staff if needed. Anti-chafing cream should be used on a long swim. Apply mostly on the side(s) you breathe too. They’ll be lots of swim products available at the Triathlon Show so why not buy them and give them a go in the NOWCA swim zone. Want to try before you buy? Well NOWCA partner, Zone3, will be on hand by the swim zone to allow you to hire certain equipment for free.
NUTRITION n Hydration and energy levels are vital for long swims. Always swim when you are hydrated. Start drinking water at least an hour before your workout then a minimum of 500ml just before and after your swim. If you are swimming longer than 40 minutes you should consider having a supplemental energy drink and maybe leave it on land so that you can take sips during your session. Train with the nutrition that is going to be given on the day. If the race/event provides your nutrition and the brand doesn’t suit your body, then check if it’s ok to plan your own marked nutrition at the feed stations. n Visit triathlonshowlondon.co.uk for full swim zone and Aquathlon timetables!
ABOUT NOWCA At NOWCA we want to give swimmers peace of mind while they enjoy their swim – that is a commitment we never lose sight of. We want the swimmers to wear their NOWCA safety wristband and not only feel safer but be proud to wear it as it stands for the ‘community of open water swimming’. We want you to enjoy your open water swim because you can be assured that the NOWCA venue you swim at uses our proven and robust safety system based around having a raised awareness of YOU in the water. We have thousands of swimmers and coaches around the UK already registered on our system and this is growing – come and join our community and we can all go swimming!
