hat an amazing three days that was! A big thank you to many thousands of visitors to ExCel London this March for making the 2019 London Bike Show and Triathlon Show London such a huge success. From the open water swimmers enjoying a dip in the Royal Victoria Dock courtesy of NOWCA, to the riders that packed our test tracks each day trying out the latest road, commuter, mountain and e-bikes, this was a weekend of true passion and enthusiasm for all things active! It was a weekend for star spotting as well. Legendary triathletes, Jonny and Alistair Brownlee opened proceedings on the Friday, entertaining crowds with tales of pushing themselves to the limits. Our Subaru Performance Theatre hosted the great and the good from the worlds of cycling and triathlon – with stand-out talks from the BBC’s Louise Minchin and Olympic World Champion Katie Archibald sharing their tips to packed crowds. The big theme this year was the rise of female cycling, and the team from Casquette magazine delighted audiences with their unique talks, demonstrations and workshops from a uniquely female perspective. And to top it all off, the spectacular BMX stunt riders thrilled onlookers with their high-flying antics. Safe to say this was our best show yet. So how can we top it? Join us on 27-29 March 2020 for our tenth-year anniversary and find out! See you there!

THE BROWNLEES – PREPARING FOR TOKYO

A Headline Act T

8

his year’s London Bike Show and Triathlon Show London was officially opened by legendary triathlete siblings, Alistair and Jonny Brownlee! As well as cutting the ribbon on Day One, signifying the start of three days of cycling and athletic action, the Olympic duo also entertained the crowds with a lively Q&A session in front of a packed crowd. Following the Q&A, fans were able to visit the pair at the OTE Sports stand to pose for pictures, collect autographs and gain valuable expertise on everything from nutrition to athletic techniques.

Jonny Brownlee, left, and his brother Alistair

The good-natured rivalry between the pair is legendary, especially across their social media accounts. But that doesn’t mean they don’t fully support each other on the track. For Alistair, he fondly recalls what he sees as his brother’s greatest achievement in the sport: ‘It has to be that period from 2010 to 2014 where Jonny was on the podium for every single race. He stayed fit throughout the whole time and never made a race altering mistake, just amazing consistency.’ Jonny is equally proud of Alistair’s record, with one particular tournament sticking out in his

mind: Rio 2016. ‘For both Olympic wins, Alistair came back from injury,’ he recalls. ‘I genuinely thought I could beat him in Rio but he still had something extra on the run!’ Known to be keen advocates of healthy eating, both Brownlees recently entered a long-term partnership deal with nutrition specialists OTE Sports. The benefits have been paying dividends for both parties. ‘It’s been really good,’ says Jonny of the agreement. ‘We’ve had input into some of their new products and we are looking at some individual stuff designed for hot and humid racing.’ ‘Yeah, they are a great company to work with,’

agrees Alistair, ‘and we love their products – they all taste great but are also good for performance and are easy on the stomach.’ Jonny’s favourite is currently the Chocolate Orange Protein bar, while Alistair leans more towards the Vanilla Duo bar as a mid-session snack of choice. Ideally such snacking will keep them in good stead ahead of the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. While both will be competing in a strong field, the brothers are all too aware of the challenges they’ll be facing, especially from the climate. ‘The heat and humidity is going to be brutal,’ said Jonny. www.otesports.co.uk

RIBBLE LAUNCHES THE WORLD’S MOST ADVANCED E-BIKES

Super Charged Cycling B

12

uilding upon the success of the Endurance SLe, Ribble’s new dynamic e-bike range presents the world’s most advanced electric bikes. Hand-finished in the UK with internal stealth battery and electric drive systems, these high-end models transform into a smart bike with ebikemotion’s smartphone app to help you keep track of journeys, locations, speeds, maps and more. ‘It’s important for us to make cycling accessible to a wider audience – the introduction and extension of our e-bike series gives more people the opportunity to experience everything cycling can offer with the added benefits of electric power assistance,’ says Andy Smallwood, Ribble Cycles’ CEO. The Hybrid AL e is a modern take on a classic design. Designed with comfort, easy-handling and efficiency in mind, the goal has been to

create a bike that suits cutting across the city as much as it does commuting around town. ‘From the onset we wanted to design our electric bike range to look and feel like a highend bike – our lightweight internal battery system concealed in the downtube allowed us to do just this,’ says Jamie Burrow, head of design at Ribble Cycles.’ Combined with its smart, sleek and considered design, these bikes will allow the rider to perform beyond their expectations – and take full advantage of the technology available to them.’ Smallwood adds: ‘We have used every ounce of our passion and experience to take the Hybrid Range to another level allowing you to re-imagine your ride. Designed just like a high-end bike, these smart, superlight, efficient and with easy-to-use attributes offer scope for anyone to go out and enjoy riding. From city to country, they take full advantage of the

environmental, health and general wellbeing benefits that cycling brings to consumers of all ages and across all levels.’ ‘The CGR range is one of our most versatile and popular ranges so it made absolute sense to introduce the electric version,’ says Smallwood. ‘Now existing customers who want to take their ride to the next level or riders new to Ribble who want to experience the joy of riding can all enjoy the benefits a multi-terrain electric bike can deliver.’ Both bikes have builds that start at £1,899 and both can be fully customised using Ribble’s online BikeBuilder tool at its website. www.ribblecycles.co.uk

HARD RIDING Designed and developed in the UK for tough trail riding, the new Ribble Prototype MTB, currently known by its project name HT/650/ Ti is Ribble Cycles latest product evolution. Andy Smallwood, Ribble Cycles CEO outlines ‘The HT/650/Ti project is completely aligned to the new Ribble brand strategy and further highlights our passion and expertise in product design and R&D. MTB is a new and exciting market for us so it only felt right to start our exploration with a high end hardcore titanium platform designed by riders for riders.’ Designed by the Ribble in-house R&D team and tested on UK Trails, the HT/650/Ti is built from Triple Butted 3AL/2.5V Titanium, designed around a 150mm travel fork with a very contemporary geometry that combines confidence inspiring agility and stability through the long wheelbase, short stem, slack head angle around a wide bar with its ability to put the power down with maximum traction due to the big tyre clearance up to 650x2.6’ and tight back end. Jamie Burrow, Ribble Cycles head of product says: ‘The HT/650/ Ti is the result of taking the detailed and very specific product requirements and feedback from riders combined with seeing how far we can push the ride capabilities and attention to detail envelope in Hardtail MTB design. Titanium was the material of choice due to its natural material properties and unique ride characteristics’. Darren Bishop, Ribble Cycles’ senior mechanic and MTB specialist adds: ‘Taking my years of MTB riding and testing experience and being part of the HT/650/Ti project design process, from conceptual idea through to actual full on prototype trail testing has been amazing and has only re-affirmed that the HT/650/Ti project has delivered the bike I want to ride’.

Virtual Racing V

irtual reality cycling is the hot new thing for training at home, and show visitors had a few options to try out at the show. Road Grand Tours (now RGT Cycling, top right) was unveiling a new look and demonstrating its six real-world courses available to ride for free. Fancy cycling the Stelvio Pass, or passing under Canary Wharf? Now you can. Zwift was also exhibiting (below right), in conjunction with Canyon. Zwift offers over a thousand structured training plans, the chance to race other riders in realtime or train as a group – all in virtual reality of course. Just remember you’ll need a compatible smart turbo trainer to convert your bike into an exercise bike and link it up to a computer or TV screen. Turbo trainers are available across a pretty wide range of prices, from a few hundred pounds to over a thousand. Zwift has a qualification mark called Zwift Certified which it uses to recommend particularly high quality trainers. www.rgtcycling.com • zwift.com

A 360º FOR FREESTYLE BMX

Going for Gold F

16

reestyle BMX Parkland is now an Olympic sport and will be featuring for the first time at the games in Tokyo in 2020. BMX racing made its Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games but this is a new step for the freestyle side of the sport, which involves athletes performing tricks across a series of ramps. According to Lee Musslewhite there is also talk of BMX Flatland being introduced in time for 2024. Though introducing freestyle sports to the Olympics can cause controversy (skateboarding is also debuting at the 2020 Games and some boarders have criticised the move, citing concerns that it will diminish the freedom and individuality at the heart of the sport), BMXers at the show were overwhelmingly positive. Situated next to the Extreme Bike Battle display, showgoers had the chance to try out BMX bikes on a pump track, brought to

the show by FastTraxx, a company that offers portable pump tracks for hire around the UK. FastTraxx owner, David Alexander, explained just how revolutionary the Olympic news is: ‘At the age when I started riding BMX in the 1990s it was seen as something antisocial, but now it’s an Olympic sport, which is a 360º, it couldn’t be more different. It’s great because it’s going to bring new sponsors in and it gives people an opportunity to make a living out of it in a way they couldn’t have done before.’ As far as David is concerned, anything that gets young people out riding bikes and participating in sports is a positive: ‘It would have been unheard of when I was at school to be able to go to a skate park as part of the sports curriculum, they would never have allowed that to happen. But now you see kids in school time at the skate park and that’s classed as sport which is great. It’s great to see it being supported, it’s only going to get more people interested.’ fasttraxx.co.uk

Smart Lights T

hese bike lights are not only bright (150 lumens front, 125 lumens rear) but seriously clever – they adjust to your environment, can tell local authorities to fix a pothole, send you a text if anyone touches your bike and even alert a contact if you fall off! Sensors in the ACE lights track changes in your motion, can flash faster and get brighter if a car approaches or if you are stopping and starting in traffic, then dim

when you are cruising. The rear light even gets brighter as you slow. All this smart tech is now being linked up to provide anonymous data for cities to better plan and manage roads for cyclists. Pilot projects in Dublin, Manchester and Antwerp have been a big success. They are waterproof, weigh only 36g (including mount) each, are relatively small at 40x30mm and come with a variety of mounts – all for £80 a set. see.sense.cc

Saddle Up Sisters P

resenter Angellica Bell was on hand to launch the Women’s Festival of Cycling on Friday at the Performance Stage. Run by Cycling UK, the festival aims to encourage more women to start cycling. According to the organisers, only 12 per cent of women in the UK say they cycle once a month and in general women cycle considerably less than men. The festival, now in its third year, will run throughout July, with events taking place across the country. Cycle UK are calling on everybody, including cycling groups and clubs, to register women-only rides to inspire women to cycle. Officially launching the event, Bell said: ‘Only a few years ago I had no idea how to ride a bike but after receiving some encouragement I realised how much fun it is. If you are new to cycling this event is for you. There’s no need for lycra, you don’t need to be super-fit. All you need to do is come as you are.’ www.cyclinguk.org/womensfestival

News THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF AN ELITE ATHLETE

Katie Archibald C

ycling phenomenon Katie Archibald knows the highs and the lows of being a top flight, elite athlete. The euphoria of winning gold five times at the UCI world championships, a gold at the Olympics in Rio, stunning successes both in individual events and team. But also the agony of crashing out of this year’s world championship and being pulled from the defence of her individual title due to concussion. In a frank and at times emotional Q&A at the London Bike Show with Rebecca Charlton, Katie, 25, shared with a fascinated audience the intense pressures on those at the top, the focus needed to get there in the first place and her sheer overriding joy and love of cycling. She told us that she started off cycling with her dad when she was 13: ‘It was all middle- aged men in lycra – but I just enjoyed going riding with my dad and his mates and it seemed fun’. She was persuaded to enter a few races with riders her own age and some women’s races and then into some at the Highland Games – they were handicapped and much to her amazement she won and was hooked. ‘Then I wanted to win a local road race,’ she said. ‘Then a national road race. Then an international road race. You just looked to the next goal, the next step. It was a great – I kept asking myself “am I really any good at this” and it seemed I was!’ After winning the junior national title in Scotland, the next big goal was the Commonwealth Games in her home of Glasgow 18

in 2014. Katie with no false modesty said she started off just happy to be going, to be representing her country at home, but it rapidly escalated. Her unnerving competitive streak clicked in and her ambitions grew. She only converted to the velodrome at the relatively late age of 18, but made rapid progress. Within a year she had claimed team gold medals in both the 2013 World and European championships. A serious injury late in 2015 ruled her out of the 2016 World Championship but she fought back to full fitness for the Rio Olympics in the summer and secured a place in the team pursuit going on to win gold. ‘It was a very strange experience,’ she hesitantly said. ‘I don’t know how to explain what I felt. It was the first time in my life I had a feeling outside of my body. It was spiritual, other worldly. I’m doing a terrible job in explaining this, but it changed who I am. I was worried that I would crash after such a high, but quite the opposite – it felt as if a door had been opened for me and it all felt right. I understood that I could do this. I just went on and won a load of races. It was amazing.’ It certainly was. Double gold in both the individual pursuit and the omnium at the 2016 UEC European Track Championships in Paris to become an eight-time European champion. She also won silver in the elimination race in Paris, before moving on to the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Glasgow and a chance to make history in the first-ever women’s Madison at world level.

Partnering Manon Lloyd, the pair recovered from an early crash in which Archibald fractured her wrist in three places to win three successive sprints, setting up a dramatic conclusion in which the British pair pipped their French rivals at the final sprint, to claim a stunning gold. After her wrist recovered came a spate of individual honours. In the 2017 World championships she took gold in the new-look four event omnium. At the European championships she won gold in both the individual pursuit and the omnium. She also picked gold in the team pursuit and in the Madison with Ellie Dickinson in the World Cup. In 2018 she won gold in the individual pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Australia and another gold in the Madison at the World championship. But at this year’s World Championship everything didn’t go to plan. ‘In the team pursuit we just rode like crap and in then I crashed – it was awful. My coach said to me what was that – you didn’t ride to plan, it was rubbish. I just broke down – I don’t think I stopped crying for a day and a half.’ Katie said she was not even sure she was concussed. She was just so upset when the medics gave her a concussion test she could get her words out in the memory test not because she was confused but because she was sobbing so much. ‘It was pretty devastating. It still hurts.’ She said a psychologist had once asked her to list all the things that make up her identity – cycling, family, friends, walking the dog… and had warned her that if you view them all as a pie chart you should worry if one element takes up more than 50 per cent. ‘Well I know that the vast majority of me is cycling. That’s my truth and I have to live with that. The good, the highs and the lows.’ 19

GETTING INTO TRIATHLON

Two out of Three T

hey might be a famously three-part affair, but those looking to get into triathlons don’t necessarily need to don a wetsuit, cycling gear and running shoes if one discipline doesn’t appeal or isn’t possible. As Kirsty Addy, a coordinator at British Triathlon, the national governing body for the sport, explained, three alternatives – aquathlon (swim followed by run), duathlon (run, cycle, run), and aquabike (swim followed by cycle) – are all gaining in popularity. ‘It’s a way for people who already do one discipline to get into the sport,’ Kirsty said. ‘Triathlon can be quite financially difficult so there are barriers there. With things like aquathlon, you don’t have the bikes and so it can take down those barriers. And aquabike in particular has been a new way into the

sport for those who either once competed and aren’t able to due to running injuries, or just for people who don’t like one of the disciplines. It’s been really good to see that.’ But die-hard triathlon fans needn’t worry. The swim-cycle-run format is still increasing in popularity. Kirsty explained that British Triathlon has programmes at all levels; including GO TRI, for those at the start of their journey; Age-Group teams, for athletes keen to compete internationally for GB; and of course, the professionals, who Kirsty credits with inspiring more people to get involved: ‘The success of the Brownlees, and our girls at the moment, people like Georgia TaylorBrown and Vicky Holland, I think that’s had a massive impact on people’s interest in the sport. By having people at the top, that has put us in the limelight as a sport that people want to give a go.’ britishtriathlon.org

hat do you next if you have just spent seven years going around the world on your bike? Leigh Timmis, 35, knew he didn’t want to go back to mind-numbing office routine, so he set himself a daunting challenge – to beat the record for cycling across Europe. As he told the audience at the London Bike Show, he quickly realised he was totally out of his depth. ‘When I got back from the round the world trip, I didn’t think I was good enough on a bike or fit enough to go out with my local club in Derby,’ he said. ‘The challenge was how was I going to turn a fairly ordinary cyclist into a world record breaker.’ So he set about deconstructing what he had to do to smash the record of cycling from the most western part of mainland Europe in Portugal the 6,071 kilometres to the route’s most Eastern point of Ufa in Russia. When he started training the record stood at 29 days and soon dropped to 24 days as more riders tried to lay claim to the Guinness Book of Records accepted title. With sports physiology experts, dieticians and psychologists he transformed himself into a world-beating athlete and smashed the record with the amazing time of 16 days, 10 hours, 45 minutes! His advice to other people with a dream: ‘At the start no-one is going to believe in you. You have to believe in yourself.’ www.leightimmis.com

ugby fans might have spotted a familiar face at the show. Professional rugby player, Joe Gray, was exhibiting his range of MyoMaster sports recovery products, along with his wife and co-founder, Lottie. Joe got his first England cap against New Zealand in 2014 and is currently playing his 13th professional rugby season at Saracens, but at one point injury looked set to quash his dreams. In 2012 he tore the muscles in his stomach just a few days after getting the call-up to play for England and the injury stopped him competing. Determined to prevent the same thing happening again he spent months researching injury prevention and, frustrated by the high cost of most tools, Joe and Lottie launched MyoMaster as a home for accessible sports recovery products. They were kept particularly busy at the show giving people a taste of the MyoBlaster, an electronic muscle massager that reduces pain and muscle tightness (one visitor described the experience as ‘quite rampant’). myomaster.com

INNOVATIVE EQUIPMENT TO IMPROVE ROAD CYCLING

Safety First I

24

s it possible to never wear a bike helmet, but still be safer on the roads than those who do? According to Swedish company, Hövding, the answer is yes. The company was at the show demonstrating the world’s first airbag for urban cyclists, which it claims is up to eight times safer than a regular cycling helmet. Members of the team hosted live demos of the airbag inflating and Christian Nilsson was on hand to talk through the specifics.

He explained that the Hövding airbag (which, when not inflated, is worn like a scarf), works through a series of advanced sensors and a unique algorithm which allow it to detect a cyclist’s movement patterns. In the case of an accident, the bag inflates in 0.1 seconds, immediately covering the head and fixating the neck. The advanced safety claims are derived from a study carried out at Stanford University, which found that in an accident taking place at 25km/h the risk of serious head injury was reduced from 90 per cent for a rider wearing a regular helmet, to just two per cent for a rider wearing the Hövding airbag. The airbag is now available in 16 markets across Europe and in Japan. It’s a success story for the company’s two founders, Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who came up with the idea in 2005 while studying for a Master’s at the University of Lund. hovding.com

Extreme Bike Battle

Grabbing Some Air Y

ou couldn’t miss the Extreme Bike Battle show, what with its riders turning aerial tricks and jumping their bikes from the top of a van to the show floor. Add commentary from professional BMX Flatland rider, Lee Musselwhite, and it made for a noisy, dynamic affair. In between commentating, signing autographs and running workshops, Lee, a 2x UK Flatland Champion, Guinness World Record Holder and also managing director of InspireShows, took some time to explain what the bike battle was all about: ‘It’s a fusion of three different disciplines all battling it out against each other. BMX Flatland is like breakdance on a bike, with floor twists and spins. Mountain Bike Trials involves leaping across different height structures, tables, ladders and off the top of the van. And BMX Jump Box is leaping into the air, doing all kinds of manoeuvres, backflips and stuff.’

The performers were all professionals across the different disciplines. Cycling down a ramp from the top of the van and soaring into the air on the jump box were Declan Brookes and Alex Coleborn, top ten ranking riders and hopefuls for the 2020 Olympic Games. Josh Briars was demonstrating combinations of flatland moves such the Whiplash and the Hang 5, while Adam Baxter, an elite European trials champion, performed mountain bike trials, hopping his bike up and down a ladder leant against the van. As managing director of the company, Lee takes his shows everywhere, from races at Silverstone and the Isle of Man TT, to village fetes and country shows. ‘Everyone just bounces off each other,’ he said. ‘We start off with some basic tricks, building up, engaging the crowd, letting them know what we’re doing, and then we build up to the latest and greatest big finale moves.’

CANNONDALE

SYSTEM SHOCKS

W

ith a strong heritage in both mountain and road bikes, Cannondale is always pushing to be at the forefront of cycling technology. At this year’s show, that technological prowess was on display in the form of the new SystemSix bike series, perhaps the fastest production bike currently

30

available. Winner of the Race Bike of the Year award from Cycling Plus and the fastest bike tested by Tour Magazine, the SystemSix has been designed from the ground up to create the fastest bike not only for racing but in all conditions. Not simply a breakthrough in tyres or chassis, the SystemSix is a full-on approach to maximising

speed. It began as a mission to create the fastest wheel possible, quickly expanding into ground-breaking improvements to frames, forks, bars and stem. With a minimisation of drag and a reduction of weight across the board, Cannondale has taken a holistic approach to maximising what a modern racing bike can deliver. Also at the show,

Cannondale was promoting having professional downhill mountain biker, Josh Bryceland, on board as an official Cannondale rider for 2019. Having been strong on the road scene for many years, having a rider such as Bryceland as part of the team helps brings a new ‘cool’ to the brand and he joins names such as Alberto Bettiol, Mario Cipollini, Cédric Gracia and Melissa Giove. ◆

HUUB

SPEED MACHINES

H

aving started on a kitchen table in Derby in 2007, HUUB Design has today grown into a wetsuit and apparel specialist used by some of the leading stars of the triathlon world, from the Brownlee brothers to Richard Varga, Kristian Blummenfelt and Georgia Taylor-Brown. It has even partnered with brand ambassadors such as Ross

32

Edgley, Para Triathlete’s Joe Townsend and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. HUUB’s approach is to look at the science. The focus is to look at each piece of triathlon equipment, break them down, study the components and put them back together better. At this year’s show, the focus was on speed with the HUUB Anemoi Aero Triathlon Suit, a new wearable that can

save the user an average of 15 watts of power over other suits when going at the same speed. This has come about thanks to the ingenuity of ex-Mercedes AMG Petronas aerodynamic performance engineer, Dan Bigham joining the team. Anemoi is just the start of Dan’s work, with his expertise in aerodynamics being applied across the entire HUUB range in the future. ◆

TRI UK

A HANDS-ON APPROACH

S

ince 1991, TRI UK has always been at the forefront of triathlon retail. We have always prided ourselves on the service we offer our customers and we continue to search for like-minded individuals who are interested in sharing our passion for cycling, swimming or running. For founder Chris Boon,

34

a ‘bricks and mortar’ store wins out over online retailers because people can get hands-on with each product. ‘Everybody wants a Harrods service but they want a market stall price,’ he says. ‘It’s hard work to walk along that fine line and deliver a service that people want, but also deliver that with a competitive price.’ Being at this year’s show

was a way for Chris to bring that personal touch to customers outside the catchment areas of TRI UK’s three main stores. ‘A lot of our customers are London or Midlands or Oxford based,’ he explains, ‘so this is a huge opportunity for us to say “this is what we do, this is how we do it”. We needed to get to our customers and they needed to see us.’ ◆

VELOVIXEN/ANNA’S LEGS

THE IDEAL FIT

A

nna’s Legs is a premium brand of women’s padded cycling leggings, designed exclusively for VeloVixen by Anna Glowinski. The focus of the collection is legs, the tools that enable us to pedal our bikes and take us as far or as fast as we want to go. Anna has been designing cycle clothing for nearly a decade and her experience as a cyclist goes into every stitch. Each pair of Anna’s Legs

36

feature an ergonomic, female-specific chamois pad. A women’s pad means better support for our wider sit bones and added length to protect those sensitive ‘frontal’ areas. The pad is designed to worn against the skin, so go commando to reap all its benefits. A signature detail is the unique ‘anti-muffin top’ waistband. It is designed to eliminate that digging in feeling often caused by other non-bib shorts and

tights. The waistband is super-soft and incredibly stretchy, giving you that much deserved comfort and confidence on your bike. Anna’s Legs are more than just a pretty pair of leggings, they have been made to last using XtraLife Lycra and Carvico Igloo performance fabric. Ride in them again and again. If you’re choosing to wear bib tights purely for the benefit of that extra warmth around your back, you’re going to be amazed

by the extra high waistband. It will keep those pesky draughts out and give you an extra safe place to keep your valuables, thanks to its secret zipped pocket. No bibs also means no more faff when it comes to toilet breaks mid-ride! In addition to the usual reflective detailing, Anna’s unique hand-etched reflective hearts on the Charcoal Hearts leggings will ensure you catch the eye in every sense. This twinkly feature has been designed for extra visibility on darker rides. Go forth and shine!’ ◆
