LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC AND MANAGING DIRECTORS

DEAR FRIENDS,

Town). Our budget has been reduced by nearly $2 million, and we’ve gone from 4,703 subscribers to 1,855 today. And yet, here we are. Despite the setbacks and uncertainty, we have a lot to, yes, celebrate. Our staff remains employed at full capacity. We created a “reimagined” season. Then we reimagined it again. And again. To date, we’ve produced four on-demand season productions, each created differently: Amadeus was recorded live; Talley’s Folly was fully realized and recorded in the Archbold, Home for the Holidays used devised theatre techniques with Syracuse University Department of Drama students and faculty over Zoom. We’ve just marked the anniversary of Stage’s pandemic pause. It is a milestone none of us expected and all of us mourn. We mourn for lives lost and for displaced and upended families who have been affected by this seismic societal shift. At Stage, we are saddened by the enforced isolation; communal experience is the heart of our art form. In many ways, Stage today is unrecognizable from a year ago. We canceled or postponed eight productions (Once on this Island, Eureka Day, Yoga Play, Once, Frankenstein, Matilda, salt/city/blues, Our

ANNAP U R NA

ANNAPURNA, ANNAPURNA... PLAYWRIGHT SHARR WHITE and his fictional creation, the cowboy poet Ulysses, share a common inspiration–Annapurna. To be clear, Annapurna has multiple meanings. It is a Hindu goddess of nourishment, a massif in the Himalayas, and also a book about the first summit of one of the peaks in that massif called Annapurna 1. It is the influence of the last that has the most direct connection to White’s play. Written by Maurice Herzog, the book Annapurna: The First Conquest of an 8000 Meter Peak details exactly what its title describes. On June 3, 1950, three years before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Everest, Herzog and fellow climber Louis Lachenal made it to the top of the world’s 10th highest peak, 26,545 feet. Others had climbed

14

higher on Everest and K2, but had failed to reach the summits of those mountains. A grainy color photo taken by Lachenal shows Herzog near the summit, ice axe raised above his head, a small French tri-color flag affixed to one end. For Herzog and for France, it was a glorious conquest, but for Herzog and Lachenal, very costly. The descent of Annapurna was a “protracted and freezing horror.” While reaching into his rucksack, Herzog dropped his gloves leaving his hands exposed to the unbearably frigid temperatures. The poorly insulated leather boots the climbers wore offered insufficient protection for their feet. By the time they reached base camp, both had severely frostbitten toes and the flesh on Herzog’s hands had ripped away in strips. A

couple of falls on the way had broken bones in Herzog’s feet, as well. Herzog had to be portaged off the mountain, first piggy backed, then in a basket, then a sled, and finally on a stretcher. By the time the party reached safety, the expedition doctor Jacques Oudot had amputated nearly all of Herzog’s fingers and toes. Lachenal, too, lost toes to the cold.

While reaching into his rucksack, Herzog dropped his gloves leaving his hands exposed to the unbearably frigid temperatures. 15

In interviews, playwright White has identified the mountaineering concept of “committing” as a key takeaway for him from Herzog’s book. It “is essentially about forcing yourself into a place of no return, so that literally the only way to survive is to move forward. And there was so much that was obvious in that idea as a metaphor for a relationship.” Herzog spent months convalescing in the American hospital at Neiully-sur-Seine outside Paris. Deeply depressed, he dictated his account of the journey, which became Annapurna: The First Conquest of an 8000 Meter Peak. It has sold more than 11 million copies and was called the most influential mountaineering book of all time by National Geographic Adventure magazine. Herzog became France’s “number one national hero” and his and his expedition team’s triumph gave the country, still reeling from the trauma of Nazi occupation, a much needed morale boost.

16

In interviews, playwright White has identified the mountaineering concept of “committing” as a key takeaway for him from Herzog’s book. It “is essentially about forcing yourself into a place of no return, so that literally the only way to survive is to move forward. And there was so much that was obvious in that idea as a metaphor for a relationship.” The moment of committing plays out in dramatic fashion in Herzog’s book. As they make their way to the summit, Lachenal, fearful of the permanent damage the cold would inflict on

his feet, asks Herzog: “If I go back, what will you do?” “I should go on by myself,” Herzog answered. In going forward, Lachenal knew he could very well (and did) lose his toes and with them his livelihood as a professional guide. Not going forward would very likely mean death for Herzog. “Then, I’ll follow you,” Lachenal said. He did, of course, and died in obscurity a few years after the summit. Lachenal and the other members of the expedition team, seven in addition to Herzog, received little recognition for the achievement. The book, which the author admitted was more novel (“a true novel”) than history, assured Herzog’s prominence. A 1951 article in the magazine Paris Match about the climb failed to mention Lachenal at all. By the time of Herzog’s death in 2012, other accounts of the climb had been published that challenged the narrative laid out in Annapurna: The First Conquest of an 8000 Meter Peak. The 1996 publication of Lachenal’s diaries, which had been suppressed in the 1950s, revealed an expedition beset by internal conflict and portrayed Herzog as a “glory hog” whose chief interest was political and personal gain.

The concluding line, “There are other Annapurnas in the lives of men,” reads as a call to adventure, a cry to live life to the fullest, to risk everything, even grievous loss, even the wreck of that life itself on the unforgiving face of a mountain, or as Ulysses might have it, in the pursuit through poetry of profound love. 18

While the truth no doubt resides in some amalgamation of the various and conflicting accounts, it is undeniable that the legacy of Herzog’s book has been chiefly inspirational. In the early 19th century, the Romantic poet George Gordon, Lord Byron wrote in “Childe Harold’s Pligrimage,” “To me / High mountains are a feel-

ing . . .” Herzog, it seems, shared this perception. In 1953, he wrote an essay for the New York Times describing an early climbing experience in the Alps during which he found himself isolated, in danger, and thrilled. “I believe what I felt that day closely resembles what we call happiness,” he wrote. “I also believe that if I felt such happiness in such rigorous circumstances it is because the planned, organized, predigested happiness that the modern world offers is not complete. It leaves certain sides of man’s nature unsatisfied.” –Joseph Whelan

COWBOY POETRY

The character Ulysses in Sharr White’s play is a cowboy and a poet. Cowboy poetry is a tradition that dates back at least to the 1870s. The first anthology of cowboy poems called Songs of the Cowboys appeared in 1907 edited by a New Mexico rancher named Jack

THE CAMP-FI RE HAS GONE O U T Author unknown Through the progress of our country our occupation’s gone So we put our ideas into words, our words into a song And somewhere ‘tween the wire and the coming of the train We let it slip away and wonder who’s to blame Bid them all adieu, you can’t turn the world about The cowboy left the country, the campfire has gone out When I think of those good old days, my eyes with tears do fill I think of the tin can by the fire, the cayote on the hill And I think of ridin’ night guard when the stars are shining bright But now instead the wire fence, it guards the herd tonight You’ll miss him on the round-up, it’s gone, his merry shout The cowboy left the country, the campfire has gone out I’ll tell you, boys, in them days old-timers cut a show Never had much money, not a sorrow did we know But oh how things have changed now, we’re poorly clothed and fed Our wagons are all broken, our ponies most all dead Bid ‘em all adieu, we can hear the angels shout “Oh, here they come to Heaven, the campfire has gone out”

Thorpe. A second and expanded volume was released in 1921. For more than 30 years cowboy poetry has been celebrated by thousands of ranch workers and Western enthusiasts at the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada.

The poems and songs usually speak of hard work, regional identity, and a way of life many fear is fading away. The selections below appeared in the 1907 edition of Songs of the Cowboys and remain popular with performers at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

WHO WE ARE Syracuse Stage is the non-profit, professional theatre company in residence at Syracuse University. We are nationally recognized for creating stimulating theatrical work that engages Central New York, and for our significant contribution to the artistic life of Syracuse University, where we are a vital partner in achieving the educational mission of the University’s Department of Drama.

OUR MISSION Syracuse Stage tells stories that engage, entertain, and inspire us to see life beyond our own experience.

OUR VISION Reimagining what's possible for regional theatre–through active inclusion, innovative outreach, and bold productions–Syracuse Stage shapes the culture and social vitality of Central New York, enriches the Syracuse University student experience, and fosters change in ourselves, our communities, and our world.

O U R C O R E VA L U E S People - Actively including diverse individuals, communities, ideas, and perspectives. Passion - Commitment to integrity, excellence, and enthusiasm in our work. Curiosity - Fostering an innovative and adaptive environment that elicits wonder.

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a non-forprofit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various preand post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of highquality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers, and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.

ANTI-RACISM PLEDGE Syracuse Stage stands firmly against racism and discrimination. We pledge to stand with under-represented and oppressed communities and to advance antiracism in all aspects of our work, including the outward facing, public dimension of our creative endeavors and the less visible internal practices of the organization.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Syracuse Stage respectfully acknowledges the Onondaga Nation, firekeepers of the Haudenosaunee, the indigenous people on whose ancestral lands we now stand.

IN THE COMMUNITY Stage has collaborated with a myriad of institutions in the Syracuse area. Community partners include AccessCNY, ARC of Onondaga, ARISE, ArtRage, CNY Reads, Interfaith Works of Central New York, La Casita, McMahon / Ryan Child Advocacy Center, Onondaga Historical Association, Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, SUNY Upstate Medical University, the VA Medical Center, and Vera House. Additionally, the educational department collaborates with many CNY schools.
