NOTE FROM THE DIRECTING TEAM Why Now? This production of As You Like It is a declaration of love. While it seems that American society has become more accepting and inclusive of the LGBTQI+ community, governmental policies have shown that the country needs more growth than some are willing to accept. On March 28th of this year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the “Parental Rights in Education” bill (also known as the DON’T SAY GAY bill), prohibiting classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in grades K-3, inclusive of any material that is not deemed “age-appropriate.” While supporters of the bill believe that it re-establishes parental rights in Florida, the ban is detrimental to the growth and development of LGBTQI+ youth. As Sam Ames (they/them), director of Advocacy and

As a declaration of love, this production of As You Like It investigates how we, as humans, accept the love around us and showcases the various forms love can have. We ask you the question, “Who can love?” and invite you to join us on the journey as we find the answer. Government Affairs at The Trevor Project, says, “The bill disregards LGBTQ students across Florida, forcing them back into the closet by policing their identity and silencing important discussions about the issues they face.” There have been over 400 anti-LGBTQI+ bills introduced across the country in 2021. These bills range from granting states a license to discriminate against LGBTQI+ people and families, to erasing LGBTQI+

people from education curricula, to denying transgender people access to health care and prohibiting transgender youth from participating in school sports. As a declaration of love, this production of As You Like It investigates how we, as humans, accept the love around us and showcases the various forms love can have. Kevin Ilardi (Oliver, Puppeteer) is a sophomore actor/singer major from Goshen, NY. Since enrolling at Syracuse University, he has been seen in the ensemble of Black Box Player’s production of Rocky Horror Picture Show and the New Works New Voices Initiative Miss Havisham’s Wedding as Old Gargery. This past summer, Kevin worked as a performer at the one and only Legoland, New York, and plans to return this summer.

Samantha Harnick (Celia) is a sophomore musical theater major from Sherman Oaks, CA. At the Department of Drama, Samantha has been featured in Ricky Pak’s production of Id, a filmed episodic piece.

CAST Ian Purcell (Duke Frederick) is a sophomore acting major from Petaluma, CA. He was most recently in the Department of Drama’s New Works New Voices Initiative Miss Havisham’s Wedding, as well as the Department production of Urinetown (before it was cancelled). He was also in the Black Box Player’s production of Next to Normal as a piano accompanist until he was removed. This summer he will be taking a break from theater.

Rileigh Very (Mama Corin, Ensemble) is a sophomore musical theater major from Pittsburgh, PA! After transferring into this program from the School of Architecture, she has previously been an assistant scenic designer for Mansfield Park (mainstage), The Matchmaker (mainstage), Bright Half Life (mainstage), and Urinetown (mainstage), as well as being lead scenic designer for the Black Box Players production of Next to Normal. She also has a special interest in makeup design and SFX, with previous credits including Opening Night (student thesis film), The Fantastical Mime (student film), The Icaabod (student film), Gruesome Playground Injuries (studio project), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Black Box Players), The Impresario (Syracuse Opera), and The Shape of Things (art exhibition). Em Stripling (Lighting Designer) is a junior theater design and technology major with a concentration in lighting design from Brooklyn, NY. She designed Black Box Players production of Next to Normal as well as assisting Dawn Chiang on Syracuse Stage’s I and You, Joey Moro on the Department of Drama’s mainstage production of Bright Half Life, and other projects. As You Like It is her first Department of Drama mainstage production as a lead designer. Jacqueline R. Herter (Sound Designer) has served as resident sound designer at Syracuse Stage and Syracuse University’s Department of Drama since 1997. She shifted and combined theatrical design with video/film design for last year’s season. Herter has designed for Indiana Repertory Theatre, Studio Arena, the Wilma, Geva, Round House, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Virginia Stage, and the Hangar Theater as well as other theaters across the nation. He received his M.F.A. in acting at the Hilberry Repertory Theatre at Wayne State University in Detroit, where his roles included Iago in Othello, Carson in Gross Indecency, and Charles Lomax in Major Barbara. A R T I S T I C S TA F F Puaseisei Patu-Tanielu “Pua” (Dramaturg, Assistant to the Director) is a junior theater management major from San Bernardino, CA. Her interests lie in commercial producing, general management, and theatrical real estate.

He is the assistant music director and a voice teacher for the Department of Drama at Syracuse University where he has music directed A Grand Night for Singing (original arrangements and orchestrations), two workshops for New Works/New Voices (The Bridge and Miss Havisham’s Wedding), and Little Shop of Horrors and assistant music directed A Chorus Line, The Wild Party, Into the Woods, and Crazy for You. He has been the associate conductor for the Syracuse Stage/Department of Drama co-productions of Matilda the Musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Elf: The Musical, and The Wizard of Oz as well as music directing The Last Five Years for the Southern Colorado Repertory Theatre and serving as a teacher and music director at Stagedoor Manor. Emma Yehle (Stage Manager) is a junior stage management major from Houston, TX. Department of Drama stage management credits include Working: The Musical (mainstage) and On the Lake (mainstage). This past fall Emma had the incredible opportunity to intern and assistant stage manage Footfalls and Rockaby, Relatively Speaking, and The Tempest at Jermyn Street theater in London, England. This summer Emma will be interning for Syracuse Stage’s production of salt/city/blues. DIRECTOR Rodney Hudson is very pleased to work with Syracuse University Department of Drama students again. He was a member of the drama faculty for many years. MUSIC DIRECTOR Brian Cimmet has been the music director for both the Department of Drama and Syracuse Stage since 2010, including recent productions of Matilda the Musical, Working, Beauty and the Beast, and A Chorus Line. He is also a member of the fulltime faculty and serves as program coordinator for musical theater. Outside of Syracuse, Brian’s credits include the Broadway companies of The Drowsy Chaperone, Mary Poppins, and Grease; the Off-

Broadway companies of I Love You Because (also the cast album), The Tin Pan Alley Rag, Do You Want to Be Screen Buddies, and Newsical; and a lifetime of summer stock and regional theater. C R E AT O R S William Shakespeare (Playwright) (1564-1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist. His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Most of his known work was produced between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare’s genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called “bardolatry”. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

Shaina Taub (Adaptation, Music and Lyrics). Raised in the green mountains of Vermont, Shaina Taub is a New York-based songwriter and performer. She has won the Jonathan Larson Grant, the Fred Ebb Award, and the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award and has an ongoing concert residency at Joe’s Pub. Taub has starred in her musical adaptations of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and As You Like It at the Public Theater’s Delacorte in Central Park, commissioned for their groundbreaking Public Works initiative. Her musical, Suffs, about the American women’s suffrage movement, recently opened at the Public Theater, and she’s writing lyrics for the upcoming musical of The Devil Wears Prada, with music by Sir Elton John. Taub’s work was featured in Lincoln Center’s American Songbook concert series and she recently made her Carnegie Hall debut performing her music with the New York Pops. She wrote songs for and co-starred in Bill Irwin and David Shiner’s Old Hats, directed by Tina Landau at the Signature Theatre and A.C.T. She earned a Lucille Lortel Award nomination as Mary in the off-Broadway run of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, and appeared in the original cast of Hadestown at New York Theatre Workshop. Her songs have been performed by Audra McDonald and Sutton Foster, and she wrote the theme song for Julie Andrews’

Citizen, Theater maker) that takes an ensemble of community members and puts them in the “artistic driver’s seat.” By partnering with a professional playwright, this ensemble of citizen artists devised an original play directed by Woolery. In the summer of 2017, with collaborators Shaina Taub and Sonya Tayeh, Woolery directed a new musical adaptation of As You Like It at the Delacorte Theater with 200 New Yorkers. That production was named as one of “The Best Theater in 2017” by the New York Times. Woolery has developed and directed new works with diverse communities ranging from incarcerated women to residents of a small Kansas town devastated by a tornado. Woolery creates site-specific work and has worked with communities in locations such as a working sawmill in Eureka, California, parking lots, prisons and the banks of the Los Angeles River. Woolery curated and produced a two-week festival in Los Angeles that explored issues of hunger that brought artists, activists, community, and thought leaders together. In keeping with her lifelong commitment to community engagement, Woolery partnered with Trinity Repertory Theater to deepen their artistic work with the Latinx community in the larger Rhode Island area. This partnership launched Teatro en El Verano, a program that tours bi-lingual Shakespeare plays back into community. As a playwright, Woolery’s plays have been produced

Laurie Woolery (Adaptation) is a director, playwright, educator, facilitator and producer. She has worked at the Public Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Yale Repertory, Trinity Repertory, Goodman Theater, Cornerstone Theater Company, South Coast Repertory, Mark Taper Forum, Denver Center, Los Angeles Philharmonic, East West Players, Los Angeles Theatre Center, Inge Center for the Arts, Plaza de la Raza/RedCAT, Ricardo Montalban Theatre, Deaf-West Theatre, Highways Performance Space, and Sundance Playwrights Lab as well as the Sundance Children’s Theater. Woolery has directed world premieres of plays by Tanya Saracho, Mary Kathryn Nagle, Charise Castro Smith, Marisela Trevino Orta, Aditi Kapil, K.J. Sanchez, Julie Marie Myatt, Cody Henderson, Allison Carey, and others. Currently, Woolery is the Director of Public Works at The Public Theater, an initiative that seeks to engage the people of New York by making them creators and not just spectators. Working with partner organizations in all five boroughs, Public Works invites members of diverse communities to join in the creation of ambitious works of participatory theater. In 2015, Woolery launched a new Public Works program called ACTivate (Artist,

C R E AT O R S around the country. Her solo play Salvadorian Moon/African Sky was commissioned by Cornerstone Theater Company and performed in their citywide Festival of Faith. Prior to her work at The Public, Woolery was the associate artistic director of Cornerstone Theater Company, conservatory director at South Coast Repertory and artist-in-residence at Hollygrove Children’s Home in Los Angeles. Woolery teaches at Princeton, NYU, Brown, USC, Cal Arts, Citrus College, California State University at Northridge, and California State University at Los Angeles. She serves on the Board of the Latinx Producers Action Network, Latinx Commons and is a founding member of The Sol Project in New York. Woolery is a proud recipient of the Fuller Road Fellowship for Women Directors of Color. Woolery is a graduate from University of California, Los Angeles.

Brun made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2017, contributing orchestrations to the New York Pops Symphony’s Women of Note concert. Brun’s multi-instrumental versatility and thoughtful arrangement skills make him a first-call band member. Among many acts, he has played for Cristin Milioti, Krystle Warren, Kate Davis, Jacob Snider, Mark Sonnenblick, and is a longtime fixture of Shaina Taub’s band. Brun co-produced Shaina Taub’s album Die Happy with Dean Sharenow, played and sang on it, and contributed the string and horn arrangements for it. A composer-crooner himself, Brun has established a brand of hypnotic, intelligent songwriting all his own. His most recent album is entitled there is no river strong as me. In 2019, he wrote the song “fork in the road” for Freddie Falls In Love, a narrative dance piece by Emmy-nominated choreographer Al Blackstone. Brun is a proud fellow of the Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project. Brun holds a Masters degree in screen scoring from NYU and has been in the film scoring field since 2018. He has already created memorable scores for feature-length films, shorts, documentaries, and podcasts, and his scores have been heard at film festivals such as SXSW, AFI, and Edinburgh International. When not making music, Brun is an aspiring plantfluencer on Instagram and has trouble not saying hello to every dog on the street.

Mike Brun (Orchestrations and Band Arrangements) is an American composer, performer, orchestrator, and producer. His broad-ranging skillset and deep belief in collaboration have led to a kaleidoscopic career in film, theater, and recording. As an orchestrator, performer, and music director for the stage, Brun is known for his inventiveness and flexibility. Notable credits include music director/onstage musician for Mr. Burns (Playwrights Horizons, 2013), orchestrator and bandleader for Twelfth Night (Delacorte, 2018), orchestrator for Monsoon Wedding

I N T E R I M C H A I R , D E PA R T M E N T O F D R A M A Holly Thuma is associate professor of voice and verse in the Department of Drama and a certified associate teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework. Holly’s acting and directing credits include productions with Quantum Theatre, the Dallas Theatre Center, Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre, City Theatre Company, Penn State Center Stage, and Perry Mansfield New Play Festival, as well as independent films. She has served as dialect/vocal coach for many productions at the Syracuse University De-

partment of Drama including Romeo and Juliet, The House of the Spirits, Major Barbara, and Top Girls, and for Mickey Rowe in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at Syracuse Stage. A passionate believer in arts education, Holly’s career has included development and direction of performance programs for underserved children through the Pittsburgh Public Theater and for the Hope Academy of Music and the Arts. She is a proud union member of Actors’ Equity and SAG/AFTRA.
