DIRECTOR'S NOTE B Y C H R I S T I N E A L B R I G H T-T U F T S I’ll be really honest here—Cymbeline is a hot mess of a play. I know, that’s not the thing you want to read in the director’s note when you’re about to commit 2 hours and 15 minutes of your life to view a play, but it’s true. It defies categorization. Scholars fight about it. Is it a comedy, tragedy, history, folktale, or fantasy? Honestly, it’s a little bit of everything, and it’s so packed with plot, it overflows. But here’s the thing—I genuinely love it. I love it for its messiness. I love it for its adventure. I love it because it begs its audience to engage their imaginations and believe in magic. This play moves me, because at its core, it’s a fairytale about a young woman who, rather than buckle under the oppressive structures of a patriarchal kingdom, dares to fight it. It’s filled with complicated characters. The ones we love will shock us

I love this play because it interrogates the idea of forgiveness—who deserves it, what does it cost to give it, and what do you gain when you do? with unspeakable wrongs, those we find comical come to terrify us, and the most vulnerable will wow us with their strength, but all will have to face the consequences of their actions. I’m also very excited to be introducing the work of Play On! Shakespeare to the Department of Drama. By coupling contemporary playwrights with the works of William Shakespeare, Lue Morgan Douthit and her extraordinary team are breathing fresh life into these amazing texts, challenging performers and audiences to hear the stories with vibrant and poetic language of today. Diego Echeverria De Cordova (Posthumus) is a sophomore actor/ singer major from Caracas, Venezuela, and raised in the suburbs of Boston. Diego made his Department of Drama debut as Raul in last fall’s mainstage production of In Love and Warcraft. Recent credits also include Sweeney in Sweeney Todd and Pippin in Pippin. Jaemon Crosby (Guiderius) is a current sophomore actor/singer major from Philadelphia, PA. Jackson Poulin (he/ him) (Iachimo) is based in the New York suburbs and is finishing his junior year in the Department of Drama pursuing a degree in acting. At the Department of Drama he discovered and developed Dane in The Dream of the Burning Boy (sophomore project), played Pitchfork Cavalier in The Pitchfork Disney (independent student show), discovered and developed Washington Robling in The Bridge (new works), and starred as ensemble in Love and Information (mainstage). At home he directed Dear Brutus (Clarkstown Theatre Company), summer of 2020. He assistant directed Love’s Labour’s Lost (Clarkstown Theatre Company), and performed in Juvie (Elmwood Playhouse), summer of 2021. Besides sound design, Kevin has also worked as the A1 position, controlling the audio console/live mixing most of the musicals over the past 12 years for Syracuse Stage and the Department of Drama including Matilda the Musical, Disney’s Beauty and The Beast, The Last Five Years, Elf the Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Next to Normal, The Wizard of Oz, Ring of Fire, Berlin to Broadway, Mary Poppins, Nine, The Spitfire Grill, Peter Pan, Kiss Me, Kate, Avenue Q, Hairspray, Parade, Spring Awakening, Seussical, Violet, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Merrily We Roll Along, Quilters, The Cradle Will Rock, and Cabaret. Haney (Intimacy Choreographer) -they/she- is a New York based intimacy choreographer and actor who has worked regionally in the states and internationally in the Philippines, Germany, Kenya, and Switzerland. They have a passion for classical text and new play development, particularly stories that represent the LGBTQ+ community. Brooke is the creator of The Actor’s Warm Down. Ellen Kingman (Dramaturg) is a junior theater management major from Attleboro, MA. DIRECTOR Christine Albright-Tufts is an assistant professor of acting in the Department of Drama. For the last 20 years, Christine has worked as an actress at Arena Stage, the Goodman Theatre, Berkeley Rep, Seattle Rep, the Marin Theatre Company, the Mint Theatre Company, the La Jolla Playhouse, and many others. She has been a company member at the Ore-
gon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) since 2006, where she’s worked as an actor, director, and teaching artist. P L AY W R I G H T William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist. His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Most of his known work was produced between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about
1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare’s genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called “bardolatry”. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.
T R A N S L AT I O N Andrea Thome is a Chilean/Costa Rican-American playwright whose work navigates multiple languages and landscapes. Recent plays include Pinkolandia (INTAR, Two River Theater, Salvage Vanguard, 16th Street Theater; translated into Russian) and Troy (created with the Public Theater’s ACTivate Ensemble in a year-long process, culminating in full production at the Public). Andrea’s
playwriting often experiments with the nature of theatrical collaboration. She was commissioned by En Garde Arts to create Undocumented, a musical work-in-progress created from her interviews and ongoing conversations with undocumented immigrants. Also in development: Purgatorio Wonderland (developed through SPACE on Ryder Farm and Keen Company), The Necklace of the Dove (Mabou Mines, 15
T R A N S L AT I O N New Georges), a ‘translation’ of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline (OSF-Play On!), and an EST/Sloan commission about an astronomer from Muslim Spain. She was a finalist for the 2019 Clubbed Thumb commission. Thome’s other plays include Undone (Queens College, Lark), Worm Girl (Cherry Red Productions), and various short plays and collaborative projects. Her play translations (Spanish to English)
include Guillermo Calderón’s Neva) and have been produced by the Public Theater, CTG, La Jolla Playhouse and more. Thome co-directs Latina satire collective Fulana (www.fulana.org) and has directed the Lark’s MexicoU.S. Playwright Exchange Program since 2006. Recent residencies include: MacDowell (Thornton Wilder Fellow), Keen Company, SPACE on Ryder Farm, and New Dramatists.
I N T E R I M C H A I R , D E PA R T M E N T O F D R A M A Holly Thuma is associate professor of voice and verse in the Department of Drama and a certified associate teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework. Holly’s acting and directing credits include productions with Quantum Theatre, the Dallas Theatre Center, Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre, City Theatre Company, Penn State Center Stage, and Perry Mansfield New Play Festival, as well as independent films. She has served as dialect/vocal coach for many productions at the Syracuse University De-
partment of Drama including Romeo and Juliet, The House of the Spirits, Major Barbara, and Top Girls, and for Mickey Rowe in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at Syracuse Stage. A passionate believer in arts education, Holly’s career has included development and direction of performance programs for underserved children through the Pittsburgh Public Theater and for the Hope Academy of Music and the Arts. She is a proud union member of Actors’ Equity and SAG/AFTRA.
A B O U T T H E D E PA R T M E N T O F D R A M A Part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Syracuse University Department of Drama offers degree programs in acting, musical theater, theater design and technology, stage management, and theater management utilizing conservatory-style training in a university setting and in collaboration with Syracuse Stage. With much appre-
ciation, the Department of Drama wishes to acknowledge the valuable contribution of the Syracuse Stage staff. While students are responsible for designing the technical elements of most Drama productions, implementing these designs requires a significant contribution by the professional staff of the Syracuse Stage production department. 16

Id is an original devised performance exploring the theme of Identity developed by the ensemble of creators. Working from a basis of Moment Work, a method of devised theater created by the Tectonic Theater Project, along with the guidance of network television writer Teresa Huang, and in collaboration with the Orange TV Network, Id will be an anthologystyle web series of short stand-alone pieces.
A new initiative at the Department of Drama, New Works, New Voices (NWNV) supports the development of musicals by writers and composers whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented in the musical theater canon. One new musical will be selected from submissions for development in spring 2022, providing an exciting opportunity for Drama students to collaborate with a professional writing team in residence.
