Yet dream and plan we did. LIKE THE FLOOR DROPPING OUT FROM UNDER YOU AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT JONATHAN SPECTOR BY JOSEPH WHELAN Joseph Whelan: Eureka Day is a play in which vaccines figure prominently, but you wrote it and it had several productions before the pandemic. What first prompted you to write the play? Jonathan Spector: I think the initial impulse came out of hav-

ing a series of conversations with different people in the Bay Area, where I live, and that moment of being in a conversation with somebody who is very smart, very well-educated, and I think basically has the same sort of world view and politics as I do, and then discovering that either

they don’t vaccinate their kids, or are skeptical of vaccinations. Just this strange feeling of the floor dropping out from under you, like this person, somehow lives in an alternate universe from you in this one very specific way, while in all other ways is living in the same universe as you. So, that was very curious to me. That was the initial impulse, and then the play began as a commission for the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley. So I wanted to write something that would feel like a really Berkeley play for that audience. JW: When you say Berkeley audience, what do you mean?

JS: I think to varying degrees, many

of the clichés about the Bay Area and Berkeley specifically, are true: very smart, very to the left, wanting to feel like it is always more to the left than anywhere else because of the legacy of Berkeley in the 60s as a place where so many progressive movements—the free speech movement, the disability rights movement—so many progressive movements got their start. So there is a feeling of always wanting to be at the forefront of that, you know, and colliding with that are a lot of other realities or ways in which people’s values are in conflict. Then of course there’s just the changing nature of the region. How expensive it’s become to live here. All those things. JW: But beyond a sort of send up of these progressives, there’s more. What else developed for you in the play? JS: I don’t think of it as a send up, and I don’t think that was my intention. I was trying to portray, truthfully portray the characters as the people that I know, that I knew, and I think, [Berkeley] as a place that tries so earnestly to live its values, that makes it a particularly interesting place to examine these moments where different sets of values come into conflict and where you reach irreconcilable conflicts to values. JW: What strikes you about those sorts of conflicts? What do you see in them?

JS: In many ways the play is a tragedy because it is a failure of an idea, and the idea is that the school can operate through consensus, but more broadly—it’s hard for me to say exactly how clearly I had this in my mind, but it was there because I started writing this not long after the 2016 election—this sort Enlightenment idea of democracy that reasonable people can come together, that reasonable people of differing beliefs can come together and work things out. I think we are seeing the ways in which that is just not true, and maybe never was true, but certainly increasingly not true when we all live in our sort own siloed worlds with our own facts. You can’t find common ground if you don’t have a common baseline of reality, which was very much in the seeds of the play. Now, I think we live in a much more extreme version of that, much more than we were even five years ago. JW: I think you once referred to that as a belief is a common good. JS: I think it is complicated the degree to which that was ever truly the case, but it was certainly the case that it was the narrative of America that people liked to tell themselves. I don’t know that anyone can with a straight face make the case that it is what America is even striving for at this moment.

JW: Now, we’re in this Covid era. How does the play read differently for you? JS: I don’t know. That is one of the things I am excited to learn when I get to watch the production with an audience. I don’t know how it will be received differently by an audience now. I think when I hear the play, the themes are the same, the questions are the same. Maybe our relationship to those questions have become less abstract than they once were. I don’t know that I have the perspective to know how it has changed for someone receiving the play. JW: You have described one of the conflicts in the play as the individual vs. society. Now it seems we're at a point where it is part of society vs. another part of society. Is that a shift that you think has happened? JS: The big shift that has happened is that part of what was compelling for me about the idea of the play was that vaccine hesitancy was one of the few contentious issues that did not line up neatly with party affiliation, unlike climate change, gun control, abortion, taxes. Knowing what you think about vaccines did not necessarily tell me what you think about all those other things in a way the rest of them would. And that has begun to change pretty rapidly in this time. You just look at the map, the overlaid maps of

the country, of vaccine rates and how counties voted, at least with the Covid vaccine. Vaccines have become highly polarized politically. That feels like the biggest shift to me in terms of what the reality is. And I think there’s a question about how that is going to trickle down into other vaccines. I saw there was a state legislator in Florida [state Sen. Manny Diaz] who, when somebody asked him, you know if you are so against mandating the Covid vaccine, there are all these other vaccines we already mandate, these other childhood vaccines. He said, you know, maybe we need to talk about doing away with all those other mandates, too. It feels like that may be where they are headed. It’s not something I would have expected. JW: Throughout the play, there is a question concerning who gets to speak and whose voices are heard. JS: I don’t know that that is the place I started. I think as the play developed it became clear that what the play was ultimately about was a question of power, and it flowed from there. JW: You treat all the characters fairly, I think, no matter their opinion. How do you feel about them? Any favorites? JS: I love all my children equally, especially in an ensemble play like this.

JULIA MORGAN Jonathan Spector’s script describes the setting for this play as “The Eureka Day School, Berkeley, California, an elementary school library in an old building high up in the Berkeley hills, designed by Julia Morgan or one of her imitators.” Although well-known and highly regarded during her 46-year career, Morgan’s many achievements, including designing more than 700 buildings, are largely forgotten today. She was a woman of many firsts: one of the first female engineering majors at the University of California, Berkeley, the first woman to pass the entrance exam in architecture for the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (and the school’s first female graduate), and the first licensed woman architect in California, and one of the state’s most influential. Remarkable not only as an independent woman working in what was traditionally a man’s field, she was also a meticulous engineer and a talented designer. Below is a brief biographical sketch of Morgan courtesy of the Los Angeles Conservancy. Julia Morgan was born in San Francisco in 1872. Her mother was an heiress and her father hailed from a well-connected East Coast family. At a time when few women sought professional careers, she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1894 with a degree in civil engineering. At the urging of her mentor, architect Bernard Maybeck, she attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Par-

build the Fairmont Hotel following the 1906 earthquake solidified Morgan’s reputation, leading to a dramatic increase in clients and to financial success. As a woman striving to succeed in a man’s field, Morgan relied on many women’s organizations for support over the years. Indeed, she began her professional career during a time of significant women’s activism and progressive reform. Her affinity for women’s organizations—and theirs for her—led to many commissions over the years, such as Mills College (1903-1923) and the Berkeley Women’s City Club (1929). Throughout her career, Morgan

maintained a strong connection to the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), for whom she designed over thirty buildings. Although her training at the École stressed classicism, Morgan was comfortable working in many styles, and her designs range from simple Craftsman clubhouses, such as the YWCA in San Pedro, to the grandeur of Hearst Castle. She was also adept at working with different types of clients, from educational institutions to wealthy patrons. By the time of her death in 1957, she had designed an estimated 700 buildings, mostly in California. The fact that many of Morgan’s

In 2014, the American Institute of Architects posthumously awarded the AIA Gold Medal to Julia Morgan, the first woman to receive it. She is currently writing a manuscript that highlights the work of contemporary Black women artists whose artwork centers on health, wellness, and social justice.

His play Eureka Day premiered at Aurora Theater in Berkeley, where it received all of the San Francisco Bay Area’s new play awards: Glickman Award, Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Award, Theater Bay Area Award, and Rella Lossy Award. It was subsequently produced by Colt Coeur where it was a New York Times Critics’ Pick, an Honorable Mention in Time Out New York’s Best Plays of 2019 list, and nominated for a New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It has been or will be produced by InterAct Theater, Mosaic Theater, Asolo Theater, Syracuse Stage, Spreckles Theater, and the State Theater of South Australia. Jonathan’s play This Much I Know will

DIRECTOR/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his sixth season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. He recently directed Annapurna, Talley’s Folly, Amadeus, Noises Off, Next to Normal, and The Three Musketeers for Stage. Prior to coming to central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award-winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres of the Bentley/Milhaud

version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the Year by the Arkansas Arts Council. He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, one dog, and two cats.

MANAGING DIRECTOR in Hiiumaa, Estonia. Previously, Jill spent five years in the production office at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage, after working as a stage manager in Minnesota, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. In addition to her work at Stage, Jill is an instructor in the Theater Management program of the Syracuse University Department of Drama, building on her work with high school and college students elsewhere, including at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Jill was recognized as part of the Central New York Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty” awards in 2017 and has served on numerous municipal and non-profit boards. Jill is delighted to call Central New York home, but will always be a proud cheesehead, originally hailing from Marshfield, Wisconsin.

Jill A. Anderson has served as managing director of Syracuse Stage since 2016. Jill is responsible for Stage’s nearly $6.5 million operating budget and has oversight of fundraising, marketing, and operational matters within the organization. Prior to joining Stage, Jill spent a decade as general manager at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT. During her tenure, the O’Neill completed a $7 million capital campaign and campus expansion, doubled its operating budget, and was honored with a 2015 National Medal of Arts and the 2010 Regional Theatre Tony Award. Under the O’Neill’s aegis, Jill also developed the Baltic Playwrights Conference, an annual international new play development retreat held

R E S I D E N T P L AY W R I G H T Kyle Bass is the author of the play Possessing Harriet, commissioned by the Onondaga Historical Association, which received its world premiere at Syracuse Stage in 2018, was subsequently produced at Franklin Stage Company, and will be produced at the East Lynn Theater Company in 2022. His new plays are salt/city/blues, which will have its world premiere at Syracuse Stage in 2022, Citizen James, or The Young Man Without A Country, a one-man show on James Baldwin, commissioned by Syracuse Stage, which streamed in 2021 and will tour live in 2022, and the libretto for Libba Cotton: Here This Day, a new opera based on the life of American folk music legend Libba Cotten, commissioned by The Society for New Music. Kyle’s other full-length plays include Tender Rain, Bleecker Street, Baldwin vs. Buckley: The Faith of Our Fathers, which has been presented at Cornell University, Colgate University, the University of Delaware, and was presented at Syracuse University in September 2021, and Separated, a documentary theatre piece about the student military veterans at Syracuse University, which was presented at Syracuse Stage and the Paley Center in New York. With National Medal of Arts recipient Ping Chong, Kyle is the co-author of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York. Kyle has also written for Noh theatre under commission by Theatre No-

hgaku. Kyle is the co-author of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days (Broad Green Pictures, 2017), which stars award-winning veteran actor Tom Skerritt, and the author of the screenplay Abundance, an adaptation of the novel Milk by Darcy Steinke. As dramaturg Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist and MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world premiere at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, subsequently produced at Yale Rep and the Kennedy Center, and he was script consulted on the Broadwaybound Thoughts of a Colored Man, which premiered at Syracuse Stage in 2019. Kyle’s plays and other writings have appeared in the journals Callaloo, Folio, and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the essay anthology, Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk about Writing. Kyle is the founding curator of Syracuse Stage’s annual Cold Read Festival of New Plays, which has hosted some of the country’s mostproduced playwrights, including Larissa FastHorse and Kate Hamill. He has also served Syracuse Stage as literary manager and resident dramaturg and received the 2021 Impact Award as Artist as Manager, presented by the Arts Administration Program at Le Moyne College. After five seasons as associate artistic director at Syracuse Stage, Kyle was recently announced as the theatre’s first-ever resident playwright. Kyle is assistant professor in the Department of Theater at Colgate University, where he previously served as the Burke Endowed Chair

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of high-quality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers, and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.
