We learn and grow the most from our epic fail ures. We appreciate our partners because of failed relationships, we learn about heat from touching hot stoves, and our children benefit from the lessons learned from our greatest mis takes. We learn more from our failures than from our successes. Tonight you will hear one of the most profound statements being spoken by a very unlikely source: a dog puppet says, “Just because something ends, that don’t mean it wasn’t a great success.”

I’m delighted the Department of Drama chose to produce this play because I am afraid the edu cational system in this country has stigmatized failure to the point that the worst thing a student can be is wrong. If that is true, then I would ask “How can they learn?” It is for this reason I am thrilled to be teaching this generation of artists to celebrate failure. Samuel Becket once said “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again.

Fail again. Fail better.” It is never about getting it right. It is about growth. It is about resilience. It is about the sheer human stubbornness to never give up. To fall down repeatedly and to always get up as if Sisyphus was humanity’s mascot.

For many people, accompanying that fear of failure is a sense of “should”. An ongoing list of what we should do, how we should feel, and where we should be in life follows us through our daily lives. If you live with this feeling - con stantly anxious, constantly questioning, con stantly worried you’re too late – we dedicate this play to you. You are where you should be and don’t worry: you are on your way.

Caleb Christensen (Mortimer Mortimer) is a senior acting major at Syracuse University from the Chicago sub urbs. He has most re cently been seen in the Department of Drama as Orpheus in Eurydice (studio project). Other Department of Drama credits include Cloten in Cymbeline (mainstage) and K.J. in The Aliens by Annie Baker (sopho more project). He is so thrilled that he gets to be a part of this amazing cast and production team for his final show at the Department of Drama.

Kate Crabtree (she/ her) (Kate, Counter Clock, Mae) is a senior acting major from Atlanta, GA. She was most recently seen as Drew in a read ing of a play that she wrote titled The Queen of England (Black Box Play ers). Other Department of Drama credits includeLove and Information (Department of Drama mainstage) and Antigone: Presented by the Girls of St. Catherine’s (sophomore project). Through the Department of Drama’s study abroad program, she was able to learn and perform at The Globe Theatre in London, where she acted as Viola in a performance of scenes from Twelfth Night. She would like to thank everyone for the amazing support she has received throughout her training at Syracuse!

Savannah Devlin (she/ her) (Gertrude “Gerty” Fail) is a senior acting major and a student in the Renée Crown Uni versity Honors Program from Rochester, NY. In the Department of Drama, she has been seen as Presi dent Lane and Mr. Highstaff in Movie Night by Taylor Williams (faculty proj ect) and Susan in Antigone, presented by the girls of St. Catherine’s by Mad huri Shekar (sophomore project). This fall, she directed Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl at the Community Folk Art Cen ter. She would like to thank her friends and family for their constant love and support, and the team on Failure for making this such an exciting and educa tional experience.

Corinne Ferrer (she/ her) (Nelly Fail) is a se nior acting major from Miami, FL. Corinne’s most recent credits in clude: How to Dance in Ohio (u/s Ashley Amigo, Syracuse Stage), the musical adaptation of As You Like It (Bronco’s Agent/Mar text, Department of Drama main stage) and Shout: A Mod Musical! (Red Girl, studio project). Corinne is so grateful to be closing off her time at the Syracuse University Depart ment of Drama with Failure: A Love Story and the most thoughtful team she could ever ask for! She’d also like to dedicate this performance to her Abuela…also named Nelly.

Adeera Harris ( u/s Olivia, u/s Haley, u/s Sophia) is a sophomore musical theater major from Chicago, Illinois. Adeera is very excited to participate in her first mainstage production and perform such an in sightful and invigorating play. As an understudy in this production, she has learned so much about what it means to be fully engulfed by and in habit a piece of work.

Avaana Harvey (she/ her) ( Avaana, Mari etta Fail, December ) is a sophomore acting major from Singapore. This is her Syracuse University Department of Drama de but and her first show in the U.S. She is very grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a brilliant cast and crew. She thanks her family back home for their continuous support and wishes they could be here.

Ella Johns (she/her) (Ella, Wall Clock, Ellis Island Clerk, u/s Jenny June) is a sophomore acting major originally from Birmingham, AL. This is her first show in the Depart ment of Drama and she is so excited to make her Syracuse debut! She would like to thank her incredible cast, crew, and director, Thom Miller. Sophia Napolitano (she/her) (Sophia, Hen ry Fail, Moses, Doctor) is a junior acting major from Long Island, NY. This is her first main stage production in the Department of Drama. Other Syracuse produc tions include Movie Night (studio project) and ID (a devised and filmed project.) This has been the most amazing experience working with the entire cast, crew, and production team. She is so grateful for the oppor tunity given by Thom Miller and for the support of her family and friends.

Tida Niles (Jenny June Fail) is a senior acting major from Sherrill, NY. Department of Drama credits include Songs for a New World (inde pendent student project), Mansfield Park (mainstage), Love and Informa tion (virtual), and Cymbeline (main stage). Magdaliz Rivera (she/ her) (u/s Ella, u/s Kate, u/s Nicolette, u/s Avanna) is a sophomore acting major from the suburbs of Chicago. This is her first production with the Department of Drama and first ever understudy experience. Olivia Tyrrell ( Ol ivia, Grantland Rice, Coocoo Clock, u/s Nelly Fail) is a senior acting major from Pennsyl vania. She is so excited to be a part of the chorus in the De partment of Drama’s production of Failure: A Love Story. She has pre viously been seen in Movie Night

(studio project) directed by Nick Kowerko, Tilly in She Kills Monsters (sophomore project), and Eurydice in Eurydice (studio project). She also recently performed in scenes from Twelfth Night at the Globe Theatre in London. She wants to thank her fami ly and the entire cast and crew for put ting this whole show together and for being so wonderful and supportive.

CJ Forestiere (Scenic Designer) is a senior theater design and technology student from Pulaski NY/Syracuse area. CJ is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to help put together this amazing production. CJ is also very thankful for all the support from ev eryone, especially Carmen Martinez and the entire Forestiere family and friends.

Carmen M. Martinez (Costume Designer) hails from the city of Lima, Peru, but has been in the New York area since 2004. She holds a B.F.A. in graphic design from RISD, and an M.F.A. in set and costume design from the Yale School of Drama. This unique combination allows her to col laborate in many disciplines (almost) seamlessly. As a graphic designer, she worked at The Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Muse um. She is also a founding partner and creator of the small women owned and run studio “all of the things nyc” (www.allofthethingsnyc.com). In this

endeavor she provides costume crafts and prop design services, as well as creates her own line of jewelry and home goods (which usually have a funny, socially conscious, and femi nist twist). With AOTT, she has been a vendor at multiple events like the Union Square and Columbus Circle Holiday Markets. Some of her theat rical projects include, set design for James and the Giant Peach at The Alliance Theater, Danny, King of the Basement at Syracuse Stage, props for The Hairy Ape at the Armory, scenic elements for Katy Perry’s per formance at the Met Gala (2017), Un Informe Sobre la Banalidad del Amor in Lima, Peru, and Owners at Yale Rep. Malena Logan (Sound Designer) is a senior theater design and tech nology major, with a concentration in scenic and sound design, from Pasadena, CA. Department of Dra ma credits include Sender (main stage), Working (mainstage), On the Lake (mainstage), as well as the Black Box Players productions of Next to Normal and Blood At The Root. Malena is the associate production manager of Black Box Players.

Blake Segal (Vocal Coach). Blake is an actor and dialect coach, and he is delighted to return to Syracuse University’s Department of Dra ma. Alec Barbour ( Intimacy and Movement Director) is a Rochester, NY, based actor, fight choreographer, and playwright. He has been studying stage combat since 2005 and is a certi fied teacher with the Society of Ameri can Fight Directors. He received his M.F.A. in acting at the Hilberry Reper tory Theatre at Wayne State University in Detroit, where his roles included Iago in Othello, Carson in Gross Indecen cy, and Charles Lomax in Major Bar bara. Thom Miller is an ac tor, dialect coach, and teacher living in Syra cuse, NY where he is a professor of voice and verse in the Department of Drama at Syracuse University. OffBroadway: Camp Wanatachi (La Mama), Mental: The Musical (Cher ry Lane), and Only A Lad (NY Fringe). Some favorite regional credits include: Northern Stage, Writer’s The atre in Chicago, Studio Theatre, Den ver Center for the Performing Arts, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Arkansas

Shakespeare Theatre, Prince Music Theater, Texas Shakespeare Festival, and the New London Barn Playhouse. Thom received a B.F.A. in acting from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and an M.F.A. in acting from the University of Illinois where he also received the award for Departmental Distinction. A proud member of AEA and SAG/AFTRA, he has acted in independent films, re gional commercials, and skits on the David Letterman Show. He sends love and thanks to his unbelievably sup portive wife Kate and his son Forrest.

Philip Dawkins is a Chicago play wright and educator whose plays have been performed all over the world. His plays include Failure: A Love Story (Victory Gardens The ater), Le Switch (About Face The atre, The Jungle), The Homosexuals (About Face Theater), The Burn (Steppenwolf for Young Audiences), Dr. Seuss’s The Sneetches, The Musi cal with composer David Mallamud,

and Spamtown, USA (both with Chil dren’s Theater Company, Minneapo lis), The Gentleman Caller (Raven Theatre, Chicago; Abingdon Theatre, NY), Charm (Northlight Theatre; MCC), Miss Marx: Or The Involun tary Side Effect of Living (Strawdog Theatre), and his solo play, The Hap piest Place on Earth (Sideshow The atre/Greenhouse Theater Center). Philip has won some awards and not

won some others. He’s been a fellow at the Hawthornden Castle Interna tional Retreat for Writers in Scotland and the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, and has taught playwrit ing at his alma mater, Loyola Universi ty Chicago, Northwestern University, Victory Gardens Theater and for the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis.

Many of Philip’s plays, including his scripts for young performers, are avail able through Dramatists Play Service, Playscripts, Inc., and Dramatic Pub lishing. He is currently working on an American English translaptation of Michel Tremblay’s Messe Solennelle Pour Une Pleine Lune D’été for Side show Theatre.

Ralph Zito (he, him) is in his thirteenth year as chair of the Department of Dra ma. He came to Syracuse University from the Juil liard School Drama Division, where he had been a teacher and director from 1992 to 2010 and chair of the Voice and Speech Department since 1999. He was a di rector and adjunct lecturer in the Bar nard College Theater Department from 2006 until 2010 and has been a guest artist at training programs across the country, including the Old Globe in San Diego, The University of Texas at Austin, and the Academy for Classical Acting in Washington, DC. Directing credits for the Depart ment of Drama include: The Spitfire Grill, As You Like It, Gruesome Play ground Injuries, and The Aliens. He has served as a voice, text or dialect consultant for numerous professional productions both on and off-Broad way, including: The Light in the Pi azza; Awake and Sing!; The Herbal

Bed; Mrs. Klein; The Fiery Furnace; The Time of the Cuckoo (Lincoln Center Theatre); Tongue of a Bird; The Merchant of Venice (New York Shakespeare Festival); The Pitchfork Disney (Blue Light Theatre Com pany); Birdy (The Women’s Proj ect); The Model Apartment (Primary Stages); the New York premiere of Tony Kushner’s SLAVS! (New York Theatre Workshop); and The Afri can Company Presents Richard III (The Acting Company). His regional theater credits include numerous productions at The Shakespeare Theatre and Arena Stage in Washing ton, DC; Syracuse Stage; Baltimore CENTERSTAGE; Hartford Stage; and the McCarter Theatre, among others. A former touring member of The Acting Company, he served as artistic associate of The Chautauqua Theatre Company for seven years and was a member of the Board of Directors of The American Society for the Alexander Technique (Am SAT) for six years. He is a graduate

of Harvard University, The Juilliard School, and the American Center for the Alexander Technique. He was recently awarded the prestigious Juil

liard President’s Medal in recognition of his contributions to both Juilliard and to the broader performing arts community.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF DRAMA

Part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Syracuse University Department of Drama offers degree programs in acting, musical theater, theater design and technology, stage management, and theater management utilizing conservatory-style training in a university setting and in collaboration with Syracuse Stage. With much appre

ciation, the Department of Drama wishes to acknowledge the valuable contribution of the Syracuse Stage staff. While students are responsible for designing the technical elements of most Drama productions, implementing these designs requires a significant con tribution by the professional staff of the Syracuse Stage production department.
