Welcome to Syracuse Stage and to our production of Lauren Gunderson’s wonderful and surprising drama, I and You, the fifth offering in our pandemicpaused, reimagined season. I and You represents our return to creating theatre in our building. For the past several months, because of rising COVID 19 infection rates in Onondaga County, we have had to create our work in remote settings: on Zoom, in an apartment building in Chicago, and in a 90 square foot mobile home. Now, thanks to improvement in our county infection rates, our actors and stage managers’ union has allowed us to once again bring actors to Syracuse. This production of I and You was recorded in the Storch Theatre, the smaller of the two theatres in our building on Irving Avenue and E. Genesee St.

live performance. We are increasingly optimistic that we’ll be able to welcome you back to our theatre in the fall. We also know that because we have been challenged to stretch our art form and reimagine our possibilities during this pause, we will be prepared to hit the ground running when we reopen. We will be an even more inventive, creative, and responsive artistic enterprise precisely because of the work we’ve endeavored to create during the past year.

We are pleased to welcome back director Melissa Crespo and the complete design team from our 2019 production of Native Gardens. Sitting in the theatre as the work unfolded and watching Melissa and our crew partner with Black Cub Productions to capture I and You on film, I was struck by how much we’ve advanced in our capacity to create work for on-line distribution. The knowledge and faculty we’ve acquired since the first rehearsal of Talley’s Folly last fall to today seems to us comparable to the leap from the Wright Brothers’ first flight to a 747.

ON EPHEBIPHOBIA AND THE UNIQUE ANGER TOWARDS YOUNG WOMEN BY LAU R E N G U NDE R S O N

Lauren Gunderson wrote this article prior to the production of I and You at the Olney Theatre in 2014. It is reprinted here with minor edits from: iandyouplay.tumblr.com. There was an interesting phenomenon we discovered through talk backs after I and You at Marin Theatre. Most of the responses (self-selected as they are by the act of staying for a talk back) were highly invested and positive. Teens and their parents and grandparents would stay to comment on the surprises in the play, the themes of unity and growth, the inclusion of Whitman’s poetry, and the polished production. But we got haters too. And their issue was almost always pointed squarely at our main character, Caroline, a 17 year-old snarky, brassy girl with the world’s axe to

grind. We’ve heard the words “unlikeable,” “bratty,” “unpleasant,” “horrible” thrown at the character. This is even after people have witnessed her legitimate reasons for frustration: a potential death sentence if she doesn’t get a liver transplant soon enough, the abandonment of her friends now that she can’t go to school, and the dissolution of her parents’ marriage. I found this harsh reaction to Caroline fascinating (and I’ll be honest, upsetting), and wrote about her “unlikeablity” (and the inherent unlikeablity of Hamlet and Mother Courage as well) here. But before we start

this play’s second production at Olney Theatre, the question of Caroline crops up again. What is it about a hard-shelled teenage girl that attracts a certain adult ire? Would it be the same ire if it was a young man? Would it be more acceptable if she were older, say in college or her late 20s? We never got any unfavorable reactions to Caroline from teens. Why does a story about an unapologetic girl make grown adults (men and women) so angry? I think there are a few issues at play here, the ones I

When we meet Caroline she is caught off guard, suspicious, frustrated. She does not make a good first impression. won’t mention relate to the aesthetic of the play itself. Sure the play, the dialogue, the production might not have been your taste. Nothing I can do about that. But what I focused on was the vitriol I’ve seen a few people throw at Caroline. What is this? 1) Young girls are supposed to be perfect. When they aren’t, we want to punish them.

“This is for your own good,” we might say. “Be a good girl.” Girls are not supposed to be unpleasant even if they feel unsafe, nonplussed, or justifiably mad. Even if they have a right to be upset (say, in the privacy of their own room or when dealing with great physical and emotional stress) we don’t encourage or allow that cathartic release. We call it ugly. And ugliness is, much of society tells us, the worst thing a young girl could be.

But the quest for teen girl perfection is causing everything from depression, to eating disorders, over-sexualization, drug use. Even for seemingly “normal” young women. From a 15 year old girl in England interviewed in the article, “The ticking teenage timebomb: Pressures to be thin, become sexually active and excel academically push 15-year-old girls towards emotional apocalypse,” from The Daily Mail in the UK: “I’m a very happy person, but every other night I cry myself to sleep and don’t know why or what I’m crying about. I know it’s not a big issue and I know it’ll never be solved. I don’t want anyone to pity me. I just blame hormones

and stress. I mentioned it to Mum the other day and she was horrified and said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ I thought everybody did it.” 2) Poor first impressions and the lack of forgiveness for girls. Part of the “perfect girl” mythology is a lack of room for growth and understanding. We don’t forgive young women for their behavior like we forgive boys. Girls retain harsh monikers like “slut,” “ditz,” “bitch,” where boys can laugh off similar names thrown at them like “dick” and “asshole.” Boys, as they say, will be boys. But girls should know better.

By the end, she is just honest. And honesty gives her vulnerability which gives her back her sincere and soulful self. When we meet Caroline she is caught off guard, suspicious, frustrated. She does not make a good first impression. She is not welcoming or easy to understand. But through the course of the play she reveals the kind, earnest girl underneath all that armor. She reveals the sensitive, hopeful self that she has been forced to hide away. Most audiences forgave her early spikiness, but I was fascinated by those who did not. Then I read this from “I Do Not Want My Daughter to Be ‘Nice’” by Catherine Newman of The New York Times. My 10-year-old daughter, Birdy, is not nice, not exactly. She is deeply kind, profoundly compassionate and, probably, the most ethical person I know — but she will not smile at you unless either she is genuinely glad to see you or you’re telling her a joke that has something scatological for a punch line. This makes her different from me. Sure, I spent the first half of the ’90s wearing a thrifted suede jacket that I had accessorized with a

neon-green sticker across the back, expressing a somewhat negative attitude regarding the patriarchy (let’s just say it’s unprintable here). But even then, I smiled at everyone. Because I wanted everyone to like me. Everyone! […] She is a beautiful kid, but she is also sure and determined in a way that is not exactly pretty. Which is fine, because God help me if that girl ends up smiling through her entire life as if she is waitressing or poledancing or apologizing for some vague but enormous infraction, like the very fact of her own existence. I picture her at the prom in stripy cotton pajamas, eating potato chips with both hands. I picture her slapping a patriarch-damning sticker on her jacket. I picture her running the country, saving the world, being exactly the kind of good bad girl that she knows herself to be. And I think: You go. I think: Fly! I think: Take me with you. Yes. Take us with you. Take us where women and girls can be

present and emotionally true. Caroline is not nice at the beginning of the play because she is scared, nor is she nice at the end because she doesn’t have to pretend to be nice. By the end, she is just honest. And honesty gives her vulnerability which gives her back her sincere and soulful self. If there’s no place for a character to travel in a play, it’s not a very good play. We can’t start Caroline as completely sincere and selfaware. She’s got to get there through the journey of the play, and she does. If all the female characters need to be nice and kind and “likeable” then no won-

der we continue to have a lack of compelling, complex women’s roles. 3) Ephebiphobia: The Fear of Youth

and it’s more prevalent than ever. But this fear and suspicion are counterproductive.” (“The Fear of Young People Damages Us All” The Telegraph, 2009.)

This may be more of it than I had previously thought. And I wrote a bit about it here. We are not used to teen protagonists in American Theatre. Twenty-somethings, yes. Teen supportive characters, yes. But not a lot of teen leads. This article says it better than I can:

She trained at the Experimental Theatre Wing and at Stonestreet Studios. She is very excited to be making her Syracuse Stage debut in I and You. Stuart Plymesser (Assistant Stage Manager) is in his 24th season at Syracuse Stage where he has stage managed over 100 plays, musicals, and special events, working with such talents as Jason Alexander, Olympia Dukakis, Frank Langella, Elizabeth Franz, and Phylicia Rashad. Stuart has worked at numerous regional theatres around the country and in Cape Town, South Africa, and has toured nationally. Locally, he has also stage managed events for Syracuse Fashion Week. In addition, Stuart is adjunct faculty for Syracuse University’s Department of Drama and has been a guest speaker/lecturer for Syracuse Stage’s professional development classes, Ithaca College, Wells College, SUNY Oswego, and the Zabalaza Festival in Cape Town. Outside of theatre, Stuart has trained at Aikido of Central New York for over a decade and holds the rank of Shodan (first degree black belt.) She is a two-time winner of the Steinberg/ ATCA New Play Award for I and You and The Book of Will, the winner of the Lanford Wilson Award and the Otis Guernsey New Voices Award, a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and John Gassner Award for Playwriting, and a recipient of the Mellon Foundation’s Residency with Marin Theatre Company. She studied Southern Literature and Drama at Emory University, and Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School where she was a

Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship. She co-authored the Miss Bennet plays with Margot Melcon, and her play The Half-Life of Marie Curie is available on Audible.com. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his fifth season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. He recently directed Annapurna, Talley’s Folly, Amadeus, Noises Off, Next to Normal, and The Three Musketeers for Stage. Prior to coming to central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award-winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres of the Bentley/Milhaud

version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the year by the Arkansas Arts Council. He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, one dog, and two cats.

Under the O’Neill’s aegis, Jill also developed the Baltic Playwrights Conference, an annual international new play development retreat held in Hiiumaa, Estonia. Previously, Jill spent five years in the production office at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage, after working as a stage manager in Minnesota, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. In addition to her work at Stage, Jill is an instruc-

tor in the Theater Management program of the Syracuse University Department of Drama, building on her work with high school and college students elsewhere, including at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Jill was recognized as part of the Central New York Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty” awards in 2017 and has served on numerous municipal and non-profit boards. Jill is delighted to call Central New York home, but will always be a proud cheesehead, originally hailing from Marshfield, Wisconsin.

A S S O C I AT E A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R Kyle Bass is the author of Possessing Harriet, which received its world premiere at Syracuse Stage, was subsequently produced at Franklin Stage Company, and will be produced next year at the East Lynn Theater Company in New Jersey. His new play salt/city/blues will have its world premiere in Syracuse Stage’s 20/21 season, and Citizen James, or The Young Man Without a Country, his one-person play about a young James Baldwin, commissioned by Syracuse Stage, will be produced as part of Syracuse Stage’s Backstory program early next year. Script consultant on Thoughts of a Colored Man, Kyle is a two-time recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (for fiction in 1998 and playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award,

and Pushcart Prize nominee. His other full-length plays include Tender Rain, Baldwin vs. Buckley: The Faith of Our Fathers, Bleecker Street, and Separated, a piece of documentary theatre about the student military veterans at Syracuse University, which was presented at Syracuse Stage and at the Paley Center in New York, directed by Robert Hupp. Kyle is the co-author (with Ping Chong) of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York, and the libretto for an opera based on the life and music of legendary folk singer and guitarist Libba Cotten, commissioned by the Society for New Music. As dramaturg, Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world

As a screenwriter, Kyle is the co-author of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days (Broad Green Pictures, 2017), which stars award-winning veteran actor Tom Skerritt. His plays and other writings have appeared in the journals Callaloo, Folio, and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the essay anthology Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk about Writing. Kyle has taught in the Colgate Writers Conference, has been guest lecturer in playwriting at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, was faculty in the M.F.A. Creative Writing program at Goddard College from 2006 to 2018, and from 2005 to 2018 he

taught playwriting in Syracuse University’s Department of Drama and theatre courses in the Department of African American Studies, and was the 2019/20 Susan P. Stroman Visiting Playwright at the University of Delaware. Kyle is currently full-time faculty as assistant professor in the Department of Theater at Colgate University where he previously served as the Burke Endowed Chair for Regional Studies. Recipient of the 2021 Impact Award for Artist as Manager, presented by the Arts Administration Program of Le Moyne College, Kyle holds an M.F.A. in playwriting from Goddard College, is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild of America, and is represented by The Barbara Hogenson Agency.

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a non-forprofit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various preand post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of highquality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers, and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.
