Welcome to The Last Five Years. I am particularly honored to welcome our director, Jason Alexander, to Syracuse Stage. I had the good fortune of working with Jason before I came to Syracuse, and we’ve been in conversation since I got here to find a window in his busy schedule to work together again. Most of us know Jason because of his work in TV and film, but I see Jason as the quintessential theatre guy. His roots on Broadway, and his continued engagement with diverse work as an actor and director, coupled with his extensive knowledge of the field, make him a treasured collaborator and passionate storyteller for the stage.

Once we found a time for Jason to join us at Syracuse Stage, we turned our attention to identifying the project that would be the focus of his time here. We discussed a wide range of ideas and options before landing on Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years. I wanted a second musical in our season, and Jason had interesting ideas about giving a new shape to an experimental work that is really more song cycle than fully realized musical drama. I was intrigued and fascinated by Jason’s concept for the show, our team was game, and so The Last Five Years was added to our season.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE BY JASON ALEXANDER

The Last Five Years is one of the most beloved musicals in contemporary theater, created by one of its brightest stars, Jason Robert Brown. It is reflective of all of Jason’s finest attributes – romantic, witty, insightful, cool, powerful, poetic, biting, hopeful and majestically, uniquely and inspiringly musical. From the moment I first heard and saw it, it burrowed deeply into my heart and I have always dreamt of being a part of it. It is the story of a five year long, intense romance between an actress (Cathy) and a writer (Jamie) as they seek to realize their dreams only to learn not all dreams come true. The entire story is told 22

with practically no dialogue in fourteen glorious songs. As constructed by J.R. Brown, the songs are presented in a curious order. The conceit was to tell the story from beginning to end from the man’s point of view while simultaneously telling the story from end to beginning from the woman’s point of view. Compelling, interesting and incredibly challenging. Challenging because none of the material in the play specifically explains nor demands that curious manipulation of time. And I can vividly recall seeing the show for the first time and not understanding for quite a while that this unusual device was being employed for the storytelling.

And I began to imagine a production where there could organically be more than two actors. And all of this without changing one word of the libretto nor the order of the songs.

When Syracuse Stage offered me a chance to direct this show, I ran my ideas by Jason Robert Brown. Miraculously and graciously, he has allowed me to try. And I am eternally grateful and gratified. I hope the result is worthy of his talent and his trust.

But for now, all you need to know is that this is a story of love – created with love and offered with love. My thanks to my amazing colleagues at Syracuse Stage, extraordinary artists all, who have helped me bring it to life.

DIRECTOR Jason Alexander. Though best known for his awardwinning, nine-year stint as the now iconic George Costanza of television’s Seinfeld, Jason Alexander has achieved international recognition for a career noted for its extraordinary diversity. Aside from his performances on stage, screen and television, he has worked extensively as a writer, composer, director, producer and teacher of acting. In be-

tween all that he has also become an award-winning magician, a notorious poker player and a respected advocate on social and political issues. For his depiction of “George” on Seinfeld, Jason garnered six Emmy nominations, four Golden Globe nominations, an American Television Award and two American Comedy Awards. He won two Screen Actor Guild Awards as the best actor in a television comedy despite playing a supporting role and

He won the American Country Music Award for his direction of Brad Paisley’s video “Cooler Online.” While still in college, his desire to work as a stage actor in New York came to be with his debut in the original Broadway cast of the Hal Prince/Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along. He continued starring on Broadway in the original casts of Kander

and Ebb’s The Rink, Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound, Rupert Holmes’ Accomplice and his Tony Award winning performance in Jerome Robbin’s Broadway. Jason also authored the libretto for that show which went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical. After moving to LA, Jason continued working in the theatre, notably serving as the artistic director for the Reprise Theatre Company and for the hit West Coast production of Mel Brooks' The Producers in which he starred along with Martin Short. Most recently, Jason returned to Broadway to star in the Larry David comedy Fish in the Dark at the Cort Theater and in John Patrick Shanley’s The Portuguese Kid at Manhattan Theatre Club. He has also helmed a number of stage productions including: The God of Hell at the Geffen Playhouse; Broadway Bound at the Odyssey; an updated revival of Damn Yankees and The Fantasticks, as well as Sunday in the Park with George for Reprise, the world premiere of Windfall by Scooter Pietsch for the Arkansas Repertory Theater, Native Gardens at the Pasadena Playhouse and currently The Joy Wheel at The Ruskin Group Theatre. MUSIC DIRECTOR Brian Cimmet was the music director for this season’s Elf The Musical, and has been music director for several recent Syracuse Stage productions, including The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, and Hairspray. Brian also is a member of the faculty of the Syracuse University Department of Drama, where he teaches courses in musical theatre literature, history, and audition technique, and has served as music director for most productions since 2010. WRITER AND COMPOSER Jason Robert Brown is the ultimate multi-hyphenate – an equally skilled composer, lyricist, conductor, arranger, orchestrator, director, and performer – best known for his dazzling scores to several of the most renowned musicals of his generation, including the recently revived The Last Five Years, his debut song cycle Songs for a New World, and the seminal Parade, for which he won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Score. Jason Robert Brown has been hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and his “extraordinary, jubilant theater music” (Chicago Tribune) has been heard all over the world, whether in one of the hundreds of productions of his musicals every year or in his own incendiary live performances. The New York Times refers to Jason as “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American

musical.” He was awarded two Tony Awards for writing and orchestrating The Bridges of Madison County, a musical adapted with Marsha Norman from the bestselling novel, which ran on Broadway, directed by Bartlett Sher and starring Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale. Honeymoon In Vegas, based on Andrew Bergman’s film, performed on Broadway to rave reviews, including a review for Jason, comparing him in the New York Times favorably to Rodgers and Hammerstein. A film version of his epochal Off-Broadway musical The Last Five Years was released in 2014, starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan and directed by Richard LaGravenese. His major musicals as composer and lyricist include: 13, written with Robert Horn and Dan Elish, which began its life in Los Angeles in 2007 and opened on Broadway in 2008 (and was subsequently directed by the composer for its West End premiere in 2012); The Last Five

Future projects include a new chamber musical created with Daisy Prince and Jonathan Marc Sherman called The Connector, an untitled new piece created with Claudia Shear and Casey Nicholaw, and a new solo album for release in 2015. Jason is the winner of the 2002 Kleban Award for Outstanding Lyrics and the 1996 Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Foundation Award for Musical Theatre. Jason’s songs, including the cabaret standard “Stars and the Moon,” have been performed

and recorded by Audra McDonald, Billy Porter, Betty Buckley, Karen Akers, Renée Fleming, Philip Quast, Jon Hendricks and many others, and his song “Someone To Fall Back On” was featured in the Walden Media film, “Bandslam.” As a soloist or with his band The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, Jason has performed sold-out concerts around the world. His first solo album, Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes, was named one of Amazon.com’s best of 2005, and is available from Sh-KBoom Records. His collaboration with singer Lauren Kennedy, Songs of Jason Robert Brown, is available on PS Classics. Jason’s piano sonata, Mr. Broadway was commissioned and premiered by Anthony De Mare at Carnegie Hall. Jason is also the composer of the incidental music for David Lindsay-Abaire’s Kimberly Akimbo and Fuddy Meers, Marsha Norman’s Last Dance, David Marshall Grant’s Current Events, Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery, and the Irish Repertory Theater’s production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and he was a Tony Award nominee for his contributions to the score of Urban Cowboy the Musical. He has also contributed music to the hit Nickelodeon television series, The Wonder Pets. His scores are published by Hal Leonard. Jason currently teaches musical theatre performance and composition at the USC School of Dramatic Arts. For the new musical Prince of Broadway, a celebration of the career of Harold Prince, Jason will be serving as the musical supervisor and arranger. Jason was the musical director of the pop vocal group, The Tonics, with whom he performed at the 1992 tribute to Stephen Sondheim at Carnegie Hall (recorded by RCA Victor); he was the conductor and orchestrator of Yoko Ono’s musical, New York Rock, at the WPA Theatre (on Capitol Records); and he orchestrated Andrew Lippa’s john and jen, Off-Broadway at Lamb’s Theatre (Varese Sarabande). In 1994, Jason was the conductor and arranger of Michael John LaChiusa’s The Petrified Prince, directed by Harold Prince, at the Public Theatre.

Additionally, Jason served as the orchestrator and arranger of Charles Strouse and Lee Adams’s score for a proposed musical of Star Wars. Jason also took over as musical director for the Off-Broadway hit When Pigs Fly. Jason has conducted and created arrangements and orchestrations for Liza Minnelli, John Pizzarelli, Tovah Feldshuh, and Laurie Beechman, among many others. Jason studied composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., with Samuel Adler, Christopher Rouse, and Joseph Schwantner. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his third season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. He recently directed Noises Off, Next to Normal, and The Three Musketeers for Stage. Prior to coming to central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award-winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres of the Bentley/Milhaud version of Brecht’s

Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the year by the Arkansas Arts Council. He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, one dog, and two cats.

A S S O C I AT E A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R Kyle Bass is the author of Possessing Harriet, commissioned by the Onondaga Historical Association, which received its world premiere at Syracuse Stage earlier this season, and which will have its second professional production this summer at Franklin Stage Company. Recently named the 2019/20 Susan P. Stroman Visiting Playwright at the University of Delaware, Kyle is a two-time recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (for fiction in 1998 and playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, and Pushcart Prize nominee. Kyle’s full-length plays include Tender Rain, Baldwin vs. Buckley: The Faith of Our Fathers, Bleecker Street, and Separated, a piece of documentary theatre about the student military veterans at Syracuse University was presented at Syracuse Stage and at the Paley Center in New York, directed by Robert Hupp. Kyle is the co-author (with Ping Chong) of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently

produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York City. Kyle’s one-act plays include Fall/Out, Theory of Night, Love is a Blue Velvet Box, Spoons, Northeast, and The Cutaneous Rabbit Illusion. Kyle has begun writing a new full-length play titled salt/ city/blues, which is set in a small city situated between a large university and a sacred but troubled body of water, and on the verge. As dramaturg, Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world premiere at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, subsequently produced at Yale Rep and the Kennedy Center. As a screenwriter, Kyle is the co-author of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days (Broad Green Pictures, 2017), which stars awardwinning veteran actor Tom Skerritt, and he is the author of the screenplay adaptation of the novel Milk by Darcy Steinke. Kyle has been commissioned by the Society for New Music to write the libretto for an opera based on the life and music of legendry folk singer and guitarist

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of high-quality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.

PROGRAM TWO: Syracuse Stage Experience A Midsummer Night’s Dream Sharpen your acting skills with movement, voice, and character development as you prepare for a presentation of Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
