Artistic director Bob Hupp made his Syracuse Stage directorial debut with The Three Musketeers, and later, brought the electric Next to Normal to our stage. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime, featuring actor Mickey Rowe, took audiences on a captivating journey and brought national media attention to Syracuse. More than 23,000 people saw The Wizard of Oz, with the dazzling work of 2 Ring Circus and Syracuse University Department of Drama students on full display. Lorraine Hansberry’s classic, A Raisin in the Sun, proved as moving and relevant in 2018 as when it debuted in 1959. This season also saw the launch of the Cold Read festival, curated by associate artistic director Kyle Bass, with exciting artists in residence bravely sharing their newest work in its earliest stages.

Not a single bit of this programming would happen without your generous support. Ticket sales provide only a third of Stage’s annual operating funds, and contributions from donors are critical to ensuring Stage can bring first-class artistic work to our stages and provide meaningful outreach and educational opportunities across Central New York.

Stage’s education programs served over 20,000 youth this season–the Bank of America Children’s Tour, two “Backstory” historical offerings, and student matinees opened the world of theatre to young audiences; playwriting workshops culminated in the Young Playwrights Festival and the Young Adult Council gave voice to teens with a passion for their communities. Born, Raised, and Trained was piloted at Indian River High School, with children of Fort Drum personnel and lifelong Indian River residents creating a new theater piece, side by side, to be performed at Stage on May 25 and live streamed for deployed family members. Stage’s first forays into Theatre for the Very Young are underway with House for Mouse, an interactive theatre performance for ages 18 months to 5 years old, traveling to Onondaga County Public Libraries in May.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT ANDREW HINDERAKER BY EMILY SORENSEN ES: What sparked the idea for The Magic Play? AH: I have been a fan of magic for a very, very long time. I had an uncle who was both a professional set designer and an amateur magician. And he taught me my very first magic trick when I was a little kid. On a larger level, I just like what magic can do as a form of theatre. For me, the essence of theatre is its impermanence. The idea that we are in this space together for a limited amount of time.

I think magic in some ways captures the essence of that so beautifully, and it is really about the profound beauty in the theatricality of a moment. That idea of a moment that wakes us up or shifts our perception or teaches us we’ve been looking at exactly the right thing, but somehow we still missed something, is such an extraordinary experience as an audience member–to sort of supercharge us to be more present, to be more awake. I think that is the essence of theatre at its 21

I’ve been to magic shows where people are gasping out loud, screaming profanities inadvertently, or where they’ve just burst into tears. And I can’t help but ask: why doesn’t the theatre feel like that more often? That was the initial inspiration and I pretty quickly thereafter started working with Brett Schneider–we came together in early 2013–and started talking about this piece. Initially, I reached out to Brett just to talk about magic and why he does it, and by really the end of the first meeting I thought, “I’ve got to try to write the role for this person.” ES: What did you discover during the development process? AH: I was interested in

telling a piece about a theatre artist who was broken in some way. And when I got into the world of magic I think one of the things that struck me was this sort of intrinsic metaphor of someone who can never be fully present for all of these miraculous experiences they were providing for somebody else. Being a playwright is not totally unlike being a magician: you are crafting an experience, you are manipulating an audience. And one of the things that interests me is how do I loosen that grip a little bit as a playwright. How do I become more of a generous theatre artist, both toward the collaborative team that I work with and the audience that we’re fortunate enough to engage with? What does that mean to give 22

up a little control? And I think that’s a big part of what we’re exploring in this play. ES: What will you take with you to your future work? AH: A lot. For me, [magic] sort of raises the bar for what you demand from a piece of theatre. One of the things that’s so rewarding about this play that I’ll continue to take into future work is that this can only happen in the theatre. More and more, I’m interested in writing theatrical events rather than plays, and this has been a huge inspiration for continuing to lean into that.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PERFORMER/ MAGIC CREATOR BRETT SCHNEIDER BY MICHAEL MELLINI MM: When did you first become interested in magic? BS: I received a magic kit as a gift as a child, but was too young to understand it, so it sat on a shelf until I was probably 11 or 12 years old. Once I was able to teach myself, I pulled it down and was hooked. A lot of kids go through a magic phase but then lose interest. I stuck with it because, in addition to my magic kit, I found a local magic shop in San Francisco called Misdirections that just blew my mind and

opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I had some friends who were interested in magic, but I mostly learned the old school way through books and then started performing on my own part time as a teenager. MM: Is that when you decided to incorporate elements of traditional theatre into your shows? BS: As a teenager I started really getting into theatre separately. I was lucky to have a great high school drama teacher who taught a lot of improv 23

As I was performing more as a teenager, theatre helped my magic and vice versa. I didn’t really think of combining the two until I was at Northwestern University. I had a writing partner who was into performance art and we started picking apart magic as a craft and why it’s valuable and what we found interesting about it. In my mind, magic is a subcategory of theatre. I don’t see them as separate anymore. Theatre is an umbrella term that covers so many different things. If you’re an illusionist or a mind reader, you’re a theatre artist. Your magic and craft is simply the medium you choose. MM: Due to the audience

participation in The Magic Play, each performance is different. Do you enjoy that as a performer? BS: It’s incredible. I can’t say enough about how much of a gift this project has been for me over the last few years. It’s pushed me in so many ways as a magician, an actor, an illusion designer, a storyteller and has really helped me hone my craft. BS: It’s a case by case situation. If I’m working as a consultant on a theatre piece and collaborating with other artists, I’m eager to teach the production team how and why something works and how to do it best. During the production process for this show, I met with all of the incredible designers. When I taught them something, they would add their own ideas and completely improve it. I have no qualms about sharing secrets with those who are ready to learn because that’s how I learned. For those who are willing to work hard, the answers are there. There’s a saying: “The door to magic may be closed, but it isn’t locked.”

WORKS LIKE MAGIC IN TYPICAL THEATRE, AN ACTOR HOLDS UP A stick, and you make believe it’s a sword. In magic, that sword has to seem absolutely 100 percent real, even when it’s 100 percent fake. FRIENDSHIPS, FLIRTATIONS, EVEN love affairs depend, like magic tricks, on a constant exchange of incomplete but tantalizing information. We are always reducing the claim or raising the proof. The magician teaches us that romance lies in an unstable contest of minds that leaves us knowing it’s a trick but not which one it is, and being impressed by the other person’s ability to let the trickery go on. Frauds master our minds; magicians, like poets and lovers, engage them in a permanent maze of possibilities. The trick is to renew the possibilities, to keep them from becoming schematized, to let them be imperfect, and the question between us is always “Who’s the magician?” When we say that love is magic, we are telling a truth deeper, and more ambiguous, than we know. –Adam Gopnick2

He created special illusions for the Broadway productions of Beauty and the Beast, Into the Woods, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Mary Poppins and Aladdin. Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi (Aerial Consultant) has been creating her unique brand of circus-inspired choreography since leaving her career as a circus acrobat in the early 1990s. She is a co-founder and the current artistic director of The Actors Gymnasium outside of Chicago, where she serves as master teacher, choreographer and director of The Professional Circus Training Program. Sylvia has been an artistic associate of the Tony Award-winning Lookingglass Theatre Company since 1999.

Laura Jane Collins (Stage Manager) returns for her eighth season with Syracuse Stage and has stage managed three productions: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Next to Normal, and The Magic Play. She spends the majority of her time working with theatres in Central New York. DIRECTOR Halena Kays is thrilled to be working at Syracuse Stage. Kays is the former artistic director of The Hypocrites and cofounder and former artistic director of Barrel of Monkeys. She has been nominated for a Jefferson Citation for Best Supporting Actress and Best Direction and is a recipient of the 3Arts Award. She is the professor of directing at Middle Tennessee State University.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his second season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. The Three Musketeers marked his Syracuse Stage directing debut. Prior to coming to central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic

director of the Obie Award winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres of the Bentley/Milhaud version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the National Endowment

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year

by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the year by the Arkansas Arts Council. He and his wife, Clea, ride herd over a blended family of five children, two dogs, and a cat named Pi.

MANAGING DIRECTOR Jill A. Anderson arrived at Syracuse Stage in July, 2016, and is delighted to serve as managing director. Jill is responsible for Stage’s nearly $6 million operating budget and has oversight of fundraising, marketing, and operational matters within the organization. Prior to joining Stage, Jill spent a decade as general manager at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT. During her tenure, the O’Neill completed a $7 million capital campaign and campus expansion, doubled its operating budget, and was honored with a 2015 National Medal of Arts and the 2010 Regional Theatre Tony Award. Under the O’Neill’s aegis,

Jill also developed the Baltic Playwrights Conference, an annual international new play development retreat held in Hiiumaa, Estonia. Previously, Jill spent five years in the production office at Washington DC’s Arena Stage, after working as a stage manager in Minnesota, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. Jill has also served on numerous municipal and non-profit boards and participated in mentoring programs for high school and college students, including the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Jill is a proud cheesehead, hailing from Marshfield, Wisconsin. She and her husband Dave Anderson, along with their daughter, look forward to calling Central New York home for years to come.

A S S O C I AT E A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R Kyle Bass, who recently curated the Cold Read Festival, is a two-time recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (for fiction in 1998 and playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, a semi-finalist for the O’Neill Playwriting Conference,

and Pushcart Prize nominee. His new play Possessing Harriet, commissioned by the Onondaga Historical Association, will have its world premiere at Syracuse Stage in October. Kyle is the co-author of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days, which stars award-winning veteran actor Tom Skerritt (Alien, Top Gun, Steel Magnolias, A River Runs Through It) and was

Kyle is currently writing the screenplay adaptation of the novel Milk by Darcy Steinke and has been commissioned by the Society for New Music to write the libretto for an opera based on the life and music of legendry folk singer and guitarist Libba Cotten. Kyle is the co-author (with Ping Chong) of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York City. Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world premiere at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, and was subsequently produced at Yale Rep and the Kennedy Center. Kyle’s Separated, a piece of documentary theatre about the student military veterans at Syracuse University, was first present-

ed at Syracuse Stage in 2017, directed by Robert Hupp. Kyle’s prose and other writings have appeared in the journals Folio and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the anthology Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk about Writing and he has appeared as a guest on National Public Radio’s “Tell Me More,” discussing race in American theatre. Kyle has taught in the MFA Creative Writing program at Goddard College since 2006 and was recently named to the Burke Endowed Chair for Regional Studies at Colgate University. Kyle also teaches playwriting in Syracuse University’s Department of Drama, theatre courses in the Department of African American Studies, and has taught playwriting at Hobart & William Smith College. Kyle holds an MFA in Playwriting from Goddard College, is Drama Editor for the journal Stone Canoe and is a proud member of the Dramatist Guild of America.

The Gala is Stage’s largest fundraiser, benefitting artistic and educational programming. Syracuse Stage is pleased to announce the Gala will honor Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud and his wife Dr. Ruth Chen. Syracuse Stage looks forward to celebrating the Stage - Syracuse University partnership that uniquely benefits the students, the University, and the community! This year’s gala will include cocktails, dinner and a silent auction and will take place at the University’s Schine Student Center. To further capture the Orange Spirit, entertainment for the evening will feature RANGE, an a capella group founded by Syracuse University Drama alumni. Invitations will be mailed out in April, but tickets and tables are on sale now for what we anticipate will be a sell-out event.

In 1982 a space alien invaded Off-OffBroadway, and in a quest for world domination quickly spawned iterations Off-Broadway, in London’s West End, on film, on Broadway, on tours throughout America, in countries around the world, and most insidiously in high schools and community theaters everywhere. Born of a low budget 1960s science fiction movie, the carnivorous plant-like alien, named Audrey II, arrived in a vehicle called Little Shop of Horrors and came armed with an infectious 50s/60s pop-inflected musical score and a delightfully quirky love story. Horticulture never seemed so dangerous, or so much fun. Warning: don’t feed the plants.

Open Captioned Performances = O Open Captioning is provided for two matinee performances and one evening performance of every production. A small screen, placed to the side of the stage, displays text corresponding to the play’s dialogue and other sounds. Open Captioning can be viewed from most seats in the theatre.
