LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DEAR FRIENDS,
ROBERT HUPP. PHOTO: BRENNA MERRITT.
Thank you so much for joining us for this on-line production of Athol Fugard’s “Master Harold” . . . and The Boys. We’re grateful to you for making our virtual 48th season a part of your life. We know this past year has been challenging on so many levels. We hope our work over this past season has brightened, in some small way, your corner of the world. Three years ago, I saw The Shaw Festival’s powerful and moving production of Master Harold and knew I wanted to bring this haunting story to our stage. We even tried for a time to remount the Shaw Festival production at Stage, but the logistics of that undertaking defeated the desire. Kyle Bass and I spoke frequently about the timeliness of this work and how, sadly, there’s a lot about the themes of a play set during the Apartheid era in South Africa that bears relevance to our lives in America today. When it became clear last summer that a reimagined Stage season was in the cards, we immediately thought of Master Harold. A three character, unit set, 90 minute play suited our production needs for on-line work. Moreover, as the country erupted in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, Master Harold emerged as an essential offering, as Fugard explores, through his characters’ fraught and complex quest for human understanding and connection, the racial divide that separates us and brings us together.
The opening of Master Harold marks the conclusion of our current season. It is with great hope and excitement that we make plans for our return to live performance in the fall. We’ve learned so much from this past year. We’ll incorporate our learning into our work moving forward to create even richer and more rewarding experiences for you. We hope you enjoy this production of “Master Harold” . . . and the Boys, and we look forward to seeing you in person in the Archbold Theatre this fall!

DIRECTOR'S NOTE “Master Harold” . . . and the Boys is considered by many to be Athol Fugard’s best and most autobiographical drama. In a way, it is a story about a delicate dream/dance of hope that gets defiled and overshadowed by an outburst of fear, anger and hatred. But in the hands of a “master” playwright like Fugard it becomes more. Fugard brilliantly reimagines a painful incident from his childhood and “re-members” it in such a way that we are forced to witness the up close and personal horrific cost of holding onto the belief in white supremacy that continues to plague our world. At the same time, he manages to give us a glimpse of the kind of hope that Cornel West says is created when people “wrestle with despair, yet never allow despair to have the last word.”

REMEMORY AND “MASTER HAROLD” . . . AND THE BOYS BY GREG HOMANN ‘Master Harold’…and the Boys is a deeply personal play for Fugard, written from a place of guilt and regret. It is an autobiographical response to a shameful interaction between Fugard and a black waiter, called Sam Semela, who worked for his mother for fifteen years. It is a celebration of a life-changing friendship set against the unrelenting pressure of racial inequality during Apartheid. It is also an apology for a devastating betrayal of that friendship. In 1950, when the play is set, Harold Athol Lannigan Fugard was 17. His schoolboy nickname was Hally. He was attending the Port Elizabeth Technical College - less than a 15-minute walk from his mother’s Tea Room in St George’s Park. Two years before, the National Party had gained power running under a policy of Apartheid. 1950 was the year the Population Registration Act came into effect. This act served the Apartheid state in classifying people “as a white person, a coloured person or a native.” It is the year that the Group

Areas Act came into existence, determining the geographic spaces that each classified person was allowed to live and/or work in. This act also prohibited black people’s access to recreational spaces in “white areas.” Where the Populations Registration Act functioned to racially classify and locate people, the Group Areas Act defined restrictions of movement according to race. The one act gave the engineers of Afrikaner nationalism the restrictive labelling tools they needed to design their Apartheid

machine, and the other was the legal mechanism that kept the machine running. Other legislation of the time included the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act of 1949, prohibiting marriage across racial classification and the Immorality Amendment Act of 1950, which outlawed sexual acts between “European” and “non-European” people. More legislation was on the horizon, like the Natives (Abolition of Passes and Co-ordination of Documents) Act of 1952 that required the carrying of detailed personal documents, the Bantu Education Act of 1953 that governed the inferior education
18
given to black learners, and the Urban Areas Act that placed limitations on how long black people could stay in urban centres. For the black majority in South Africa, 1950 was a time of intensified limitations on movement, less access to facilities, and a growing sense of dehumanisation. It was a time of fear of what was to come. By the early 80s, when the play was written, Apartheid’s oppressive stranglehold was in full force. The country, and the world, had witnessed the Soweto Youth Uprising of June 16, 1976. Black school learners had taken to the streets to protest the “gutter” Bantu Education they were receiving.
School goers had revolted against Afrikaans being used as a medium of instruction. They were met with gunfire and violence. Official reports stated that 23 people were killed that day. Other reports estimated it was at least 200. Another injustice that loomed large when Fugard was writing the play was the killing of Black Consciousness Movement leader Steve Biko. He was murdered in police detention in September of 1977. He was the 20th person to die in Security Police custody in 18 months. His funeral prompted a national display of grief, alongside local and international protests, and outrage.

Despite police blockades, over 20,000 mourners attended Biko’s funeral. Mourners came from across the country and included diplomats from at least 13 Western countries. The funeral turned into an anti-Apartheid political rally that lasted over six hours. The country would be in a State of Emergency by 1985. Through the play, Fugard is looking back on a 30-year-old memory from his schooldays. A memory that had come to haunt him. The play’s action sits at that tension point between a 50-yearold Fugard in early-1980s, reconsidering the personal and political environment of his youth in 1950. It is an examination of how a white supremacist mind-
20
set, fear, and prejudice wrecked his relationship with the man he came to consider “the most significant – the only – friend of my boyhood years.” By writing the play, he sought to redress what he has called a deep stain “soaked into the fabric” of his life. A recurring dramatic irony in the play is that Hally is conscious of what he calls “social reformers,” but he is unaware of some of the nuances of his own situation. On one level, he has a progressive understanding beyond his years. He can quote the works of revolutionary thinkers and can espouse the need for reformation. He even sets out to challenge his schoolmaster’s perceptions of history and of what the school syl-

labus considers an “event of cultural or historical significance.” But on another level, he is blind to some of his own conditioning. He is not fully conscious of his ingrained and learnt prejudices. Toni Morrison, in reflecting on writing Beloved, calls this blending of history, memory, remembering, and forgetting, “‘rememory.” She says, “Rememory as in recollecting and remembering as in reassembling the members of the body, the family, the population of the past.” In this sense, ‘Master Harold’…and the Boys is a provocation to look back on our past actions. To reconsider, to redress, to rememory history in order to make better choices, so that we can set reparations in place where needed.
In 1983, Fugard arranged for actor, John Kani*, to collect Sam Semela and travel with him from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg. Fugard wanted Semela to see the South African premiere of the play at The Market Theatre. He had planned to apologise after the performance for his shameful actions as a boy. Semela never made the journey. He died shortly before Kani came to collect him. Greg Homann is the dramaturg for “Master Harold"...and the Boys. *John Kani directed Syracuse Stage’s 2015 production of Fugard’s Sizwe Banzi is Dead. The cast featured Kani’s son Atandwa and Mncedisi Shabangu.

His new play salt/city/blues will have its world premiere in Syracuse Stage’s 20/21 season, and Citizen James, or The Young Man Without a Country, his one-person play about a young James Baldwin, commissioned by Syracuse Stage, will be produced as part of Syracuse Stage’s Backstory program early next year. Script consultant on Thoughts of a Colored Man, Kyle is a two-time recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (for fiction in 1998 and playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, and Pushcart Prize nominee. His other full-length plays include Tender Rain, Baldwin vs. Buckley: The Faith of Our Fathers, Bleecker Street, and Separated, a piece of documentary theatre about the student military veterans at Syracuse University, which was presented at Syracuse Stage and at the Paley Center in New York, directed by Robert Hupp. Kyle is the co-author (with Ping Chong) of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York, and the libretto for an opera based on the life and music of legendary folk singer and guitarist Libba Cotten, commissioned by the Society for New Music. As dramaturg, Kyle worked

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a non-forprofit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various preand post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of highquality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers, and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.
