With this production of Matilda the Musical, we’re pleased to once again do our small part to brighten the holiday season for families across Central New York. Know, too, that this production highlights the unique and significant partnership between Syracuse Stage and the Syracuse University Department of Drama. For the past 49 years, Syracuse Stage has been proud to be in residence on the University campus. We believe the collaborative engagement with the Department of Drama strengthens and enriches both organizations. Today’s performance certainly wouldn’t be possible without this partnership. A LOVE LETTER TO THE POWER OF STORIES AN INTERVIEW WITH TIM MINCHIN

Australian comedian, actor, writer, musician, composer, lyricist, and director Tim Minchin wrote his first theatrical score at 18 and has since written the music and lyrics for the stage version of Matilda. The interview below, slightly edited for clarity, originally appeared in the Bristol Magazine. How did you first get involved in Matilda the Musical? Back in 2008 I was beginning to get some traction as a comedian. The Royal Shakespeare Company called me in for a meeting and I didn’t know what it was about, so I sort of walked in blind. Matthew Warchus, who was so unassuming I didn’t realize he was a giant of his field, asked if I knew Roald Dahl’s work. I said yes, of course, and he said they were thinking about making a musical of Matilda. I told him the same thought had occurred to me a few years earlier and I’d even tried to get the rights. So it was 18

a moment of huge convergence. But because things were going well in my comedy career, when they first offered me the job I hesitated. Fortunately I ignored my doubts when I realized what an amazing opportunity this was. What were your priorities when it came to writing the music? Writing musicals is hard, because it’s really easy for them to be cheesy nonsense. And with Dahl it felt especially important to avoid this. He was the king of my childhood, and he wrote with this holy trinity of humor, heart, and darkness. The humor

and the heart only work with the darkness to offset them; without it you’re not doing him justice. There’s a lot of stuff you can’t put cherries on, especially in Matilda. So primarily I wanted to make sure that when the actors started singing the songs, the audience didn’t feel compelled to slap them. I passionately wanted to avoid a ‘Disneyfication’ of the story. What’s the difference with having child actors at the heart of the show? The extraordinary thing about Matilda is that you’re watching

I wrote the songs for children and always crossed my fingers that we could find young performers with the talent to deliver them. It soon became apparent that we could.

I especially love it when people come with quite low expectations of how good a show performed by kids can be, then have their minds blown. Do you have a favorite moment in the show?

It depends on the performance, but if I had to pick one I’d say “Quiet.” It’s just this amazing moment when a small child stands in a spotlight with her eyes closed and her arms out, after this freefall of ideas has gone through her brain. And there’s total silence. It comes at the point in the musical where typically you get a big, belting song. But we put two fingers up at that, because at that point in the story our character just needs peace. It always makes me feel very special.

Matilda is a love letter to the power of stories, imagination and kindness in the face of cruelty, greed and superficiality. I think it’s become even more relevant in recent years. On top of that, it tells kids that reading is cool, and that changing your story and standing up to bullies is possible. That’s a timeless message. Is the show just as relevant now as when it opened?

naturally wanted to be farmers. Later I wanted to be a teacher, partly because I never really thought you could be a poet or a songwriter. It took me a long time to work out that it could be a genuine career path.

If you could have a magical power, like Matilda, what would it be? I would like her ability to read so many books in a week. Especially now I’ve got kids attending new schools, I feel I have a lot to catch up on. But usually I get halfway through a page and fall asleep with the book on my face. So I would love to have Matilda’s ability to vacuum up knowledge; I’m so frustrated by the books on my own bookshelf, never mind the countless others in the libraries of the world.

One of the songs you wrote for the show is When I Grow Up. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a farmer, which was a bit weird because I was asthmatic and allergic to hay. But my grandad had a farm we loved, so my brother and I

FROM DANCE AROUND THE KITCHEN The ingredients for the prop cake Miss Trunchbull employs as an instrument of punishment are sound muffling foam, spandex, and silicone. Tasty for a goat, perhaps, but punishing for the human palate. For a much tastier treat, try this recipe for Matilda's chocolate cake from (appropriately) Dance Around the Kitchen.  ABOVE: PROP CAKE FEATURED IN MATILDA THE MUSICAL.

INGREDIENTS Chocolate Cake Layers • 2 c flour • 2 c sugar • 3/4 c cocoa powder • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 c vegetable oil • 1 c buttermilk • 2 eggs • 1 tsp vanilla • 1 c hot coffee

Glossy Chocolate Frosting • 1/2 c salted butter • 3/4 c semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 1/3 c sugar • 1/2 c cocoa powder • 1/4 tsp salt • 1 c cream • 1/3 c sour cream • 1 tsp vanilla

INSTRUCTIONS Cake Layers 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Grease two 9” round cake pans and line the bottom with parchment paper. 3. Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder and baking soda to your mixing bowl (I use a stand mixer with the whisk attachment). Stir until combined. 4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs and vanilla. Once combined, add in the coffee slowly so you don’t cook the eggs. 5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir slowly until combined. Then mix on high for two minutes, scraping the sides halfway through. 6. Distribute the batter between the two prepared pans. 7. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. (A few moist crumbs sticking to the toothpick is fine, but you don’t want it gooey). 8. Cool for a few minutes. Run a butter knife around the outside of each pan, and turn the cakes out onto a cooling rack. Glossy Chocolate Frosting 1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. 2. Add the chocolate chips and stir until melted. 3. Add the sugar, cocoa and salt and whisk together. (It will be a little bit grainy at this point, which is fine). 4. Whisk in the cream and sour cream. Continue to cook on low heat until hot and smooth, but do not let it boil. 5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. 6. Let the frosting cool in the fridge (it’ll thicken) until it’s at the right consistency.* 7. Stir the frosting until smooth and frost the cake. NOTES *If the frosting thickens more than you’d like in the fridge, set it out at room temperature for a bit until it softens.

He holds a Masters of Fine Arts in ensemble based physical theatre from the Dell’ Arte School in Blue Lake, California. In 2012 he founded Building Company Theater based in Syracuse. CHOREOGRAPHER Andrea Leigh-Smith is a member of the dance faculty in the Department of Drama’s musical theatre program. In 2010, DNA became a set text on the GCSE English Literature syllabus. Tim Minchin (Music and Lyrics) is an Australian musician, comedian, composer, actor, writer, and director. He has toured extensively in the US, UK, and Australia, performing solo, with bands, and with symphony orchestras. He’s released five DVDs, the most recent recorded with the Heritage Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. He is the composer lyricist of two hit West End/Broadway musicals, Matilda and Groundhog Day, both of which won the Olivier Award for Best West End Musical and garnered nominations for Best Score and Best Musical in Broadway’s Tony Awards. Minchin wrote, produced, and starred in the Sky Atlantic/Foxtel TV series, Upright, in 2019. Other screen-acting credits include Atticus Fetch in Season 6 of Californication, a Logie Awardwinning Smasher Sullivan in the ABC’s Secret River, and Friar Tuck in Lionsgate›s Robin Hood reboot. An organ scholar at Magdalene College, Cambridge, Christopher was musical director of the Cambridge Footlights for three years before graduating in 1987 and working for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Chris Nightingale (Orchestrations and Additional Music) is the musical supervisor, orchestrator and created additional music for Matilda the Musical for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Orchestrations and a Grammy Award nomination for his work as co-producer on the Matilda album. He recently composed the score for the film Pride, which was BAFTA nominated. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his sixth season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. He recently directed Eureka Day, Annapurna, Talley’s Folly, Amadeus, Noises Off, Next to Normal, and The Three Musketeers for Stage. Prior to coming to central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award-winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres

of the Bentley/Milhaud version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the Year by the Arkansas Arts Council. He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, one dog, and two cats.

In addition to her work at Stage, Jill is an instructor in the Theater Management pro-

gram of the Syracuse University Department of Drama, building on her work with high school and college students elsewhere, including at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Jill was recognized as part of the Central New York Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty” awards in 2017 and has served on numerous municipal and non-profit boards. Kyle’s other full-length plays include Tender Rain, Bleecker Street, Baldwin vs. Buckley: The Faith of Our Fathers, which has been presented at Cornell University, Colgate University, the University of Delaware, and was presented at Syracuse University in September 2021, and Separated, a documentary theatre piece about the student military veterans at Syracuse University, which was presented at Syracuse Stage and the Paley Center in New York. With National Medal of Arts recipient Ping Chong, Kyle is the co-author of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York. Kyle has also written for Noh theatre under commission by Theatre Nohgaku. Kyle is the co-author of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days (Broad Green Pictures, 2017), which stars award-winning veteran actor Tom Skerritt, and the author of the screenplay Abundance, an adaptation of the novel Milk by Darcy Steinke. As dramaturg Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist and MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world premiere at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, subsequently produced at Yale Rep and the Kennedy Center, and he was script consulted on the Broadway-bound Thoughts of a Colored Man,

which premiered at Syracuse Stage in 2019. Kyle’s plays and other writings have appeared in the journals Callaloo, Folio, and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the essay anthology, Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk about Writing. Kyle is the founding curator of Syracuse Stage’s annual Cold Read Festival of New Plays, which has hosted some of the country’s most-produced playwrights, including Larissa FastHorse and Kate Hamill. He has also served Syracuse Stage as literary manager and resident dramaturg and received the 2021 Impact Award as Artist as Manager, presented by the Arts Administration Program at Le Moyne College. After five seasons as associate artistic director at Syracuse Stage, Kyle was recently announced as the theatre’s first-ever resident playwright. Kyle is assistant professor in the Department of Theater at Colgate University, where he previously served as the Burke Endowed Chair for Regional Studies. Previously, Kyle was faculty in the M.F.A. Creative Writing program at Goddard College from 2006 to 2018, taught playwriting in Syracuse University’s Department of Drama and at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, and was the 2019/20 Susan P. Stroman Visiting Playwright at the University of Delaware. A twotime recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship (for fiction in 1998, for playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, and Pushcart Prize nominee, Kyle holds an M.F.A. in playwriting from Goddard College, is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild of America and is represented by The Barbara Hogenson Agency.

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area.
