Thechoreographeristhepersonwhodiscovershowamusicalwillmove,creatingspecificphysicalityand stagingthatencasestheleadcharactersandkeepsthestoryalwaysmovingforwardduringmusical numbers.Thereareobviousmomentswhenthechoreographer'sworkisseen(the"dancebreaks")andnot soobviousmomentswherechoicesaresointertwinedwiththedirector'svisionandthephysicalityofthe charactersthattheaudiencenevernoticesachoreographer'shandwasinvolved.Thisproductionisunique becauseofthecollaborationbetweendanceandcircuschoreography.Togetherwiththedirector,wehadto decidewherecircuselementscameintotheproductionnumbersandhowaspecificapparatusorcharacter intheairremainsconnectedto,andevenenhances,theplotpointstakingplaceontheground.

Thiscreativeteamhasbeenworkingtogetherfor7yearsandeverytimewecomebacktogethertorevisit thisshow,itfeelslikeacelebratoryfamilyreunion.Ithinkourideascometogetherseamlesslyonthis production--itisacollaborationoflove.Wearealsoallowedtheopportunitytodiscoverhowpreviousideas canevolveinnewbodieswithuniqueperspectives.ThecraftspeopleatSyracuseStageandthisstellar castarebringingthisproductiontonewheights-itisathrilltoseetheshowsobeautifullyinterpretedhere.

Synopsis
BasedontheDisneymovieandthebookbyHans ChristianAnderson, TheLittleMermaid isamusical taleofloveandfollowingyourdreams.Ariel,the youngestdaughterofKingTriton,isobsessedwiththe humanworldandmakesmanytripstothesurface. KingTritonhateshumansandisangrywithArielfor goinguptothesurface.Heassignsthecourt composer,Sebastian,towatchoverherandensure shedoesn’tgoback.Arielisupsetbyherfather’s angerandgoestositwithherfriendsFlounderand Scuttle.ShespotsPrinceEriconhisshipand overhearsaconversationwhereheexplainshowhe mustgetmarriedbeforebecomingKing.Astorm suddenlyovertakestheship,andEricisthrownintothe sea.ArielsavesEricandbringshimtotheshore.She suddenlyrealizesthatshelovesEricandpromisesto findawaytobewithhim.
SebastianrevealsthatArielsavedErictoKing Triton,andheangrilyconfrontsheraboutit.KingTriton destroysallofherthingsfromthehumanworld,and Arielisheartbroken.Sebastiantriestocheerherupby pointingoutallofthebeautifulthingsunderthesea, butArielrunsoffbeforehecanfinish.Sheisfoundby FlotsamandJetsam,whoconvincehertogotoUrsula forhelp.WhenArielgoestoUrsula,Ursulaoffershera deal.Arielwillbeturnedintoahumanforthreedays, andifshewinsthetrueloveofEricandkisseshim, shewillbeahumanforever.Ifshedoesn’twinEric’s love,Ariel’ssoulwillbelongtoUrsulaforever.Ariel acceptsthedeal,andinexchangeforUrsula’smagic, ArielgiveshervoicetoUrsula.

Amermaidisamythicalcreature,typicallywiththeheadandbodyofawomanandafishtailbelowthewaist. Storiesaboutthemhavebeentoldforthousandsofyears,andtheyhavetakenmanydifferentformsacross cultures.Often,infolklore,theyrepresenttheseaasbothcalmandnourishingasalifesourceformanycreatures andhumans,aswellasunrulyanddangerous,capableofstormsandshipwrecks.Manydifferentstoriesabout mermaidsandmermaid-likecreatureshavebeensharedacrossculturesbysailors;hereareafewfromaroundthe world!

FoundinSyriaaround1000BC,theearliestknownversionofamermaidisthestoryofthegoddessAtargatis,who wassobeautifulthatwhenshefellintoalake,theothergodssavedherbyturningherintoafish.However,inorder tokeepherbeautyintact,onlyherbottomhalfbecameafish,andhertophalfstayedinhumanform.Shethen becamethegoddessoftheseas.

Often,mermaidsareconnectedwithGreeksirens,whichweresinisterhalf-woman,half-birds,whowouldsiton rocks,singingbeautifulsongsinordertoluresailorstocrashintotherocks.Overtime,descriptionsofsirens includedhavingfishtailsinsteadofbirdbodies,andtheybecamestronglyconnectedwithmermaids.

Thestoryof TheLittleMermaid wasoriginallypublishedin1837byHansChristianAndersen.Itwasoriginally writteninDanish,withthetitle Denlillehavfrue.ThefirstEnglishtranslationwaspublishedinFebruary1846with CharlesBonerservingasthetranslator.ThishelpedkickstartthepopularityofAndersenamongEnglish-speaking readers,andby1848,thereweresixdifferentEnglishtranslationsof TheLittleMermaid.Thestorywasinfluenced bymythsaboutmerfolkandnymphs,butdidnotcomefromonespecificmyth.Instead,thestorystemmedentirely fromAndersen’simagination.Inthisoriginalversionofthestory,themermaid,unnamed,hasastrongdesirefor immortalitywhichshelearnscouldcomefromlovingahuman.Thisoriginalversionofthestoryismuchdarker thantheversionmanyknowtoday,withthemermaidsacrificingherselfattheendofthestorybeforelaterbeing grantedanimmortalsoul.Thestoryhasgoneontohaveseveraladaptationsincludingshortstories,novels,films, andmusicals.
