ON THE LAKE, A TRAGI-COMIC DREAM PLAY AT THE END OF ANTON CHEKHOV’S PLAY, The Seagull, on a windswept, rainy night a young woman named Nina visits the lakefront estate of a young man - Kostia. They have known one another since childhood, and he has fallen deeply in love with her. That night, she tells him she cannot return his love. Although fond of him, she remains desperately in love with his mother’s lover, Trigorin. Impulsively, she embraces Kostia, and runs out into the night. Heartbroken and abandoned, Kostia commits suicide. On the Lake picks up this tragic story eight months later. Nina is an actress with a theater company touring the small provincial towns of Russia when she learns of Kostia’s death. Although deeply saddened by the news, and

burdened with a heavy sense of duty and obligation, she hesitates in her decision to return to pay her respects to his family and friends. She is struggling with many unhappy memories and regrets; and with many entangling and unresolved relationships. One evening, unsettled and uncertain, she boards the train with the rest of the theater company, and as the wheels spin along the tracks, she drops off to sleep…
“I’m so tired, I travelled all night… I don’t know if I’m asleep or awake.”
“I’m so tired, I travelled all night…I don’t know if I’m asleep or awake.” – Nina, from On the Lake
comes and reconciles the dreamer with reality, which however painful it might be, is a joy compared to the agony of dreaming.” - August Strindberg, preface to A Dream Play
“Anything can happen; everything is possible and probable. On a slight groundwork of reality, imagination spins and weaves new patterns made up of memories, experiences, absurdities and improvisations. But, a single consciousness rules them all - that of the dreamer. For them there are no secrets, no inconsistencies, no laws. And, because a dream is usually painful, a tone of melancholy permeates the rambling narrative. Sleep, the liberator, often feels like torture, but when the torment is at its worst the moment of awakening
– NINA, FROM ON THE LAKE
“Nina is able to engage in a process of self-fashioning which illustrates her development into a woman who takes charge of her own identity. She stops seeing herself through patriarchal eyes and embarks on a creative journey of recreating herself…” – Daniel Botha Standler – Stephen Cross
