DEAR FRIENDS, We are delighted that you are here at Stage for The Play That Goes Wrong – for so many months, we’ve eagerly awaited the chance to share this rollicking, ridiculous, and just plain fun production with you. When we planned the 2021-2022 season, we sought to include a wide variety of plays and musicals – topical and timely comedies, a big family musical with all the bells and whistles, and just last month, the joyful yet riveting world premiere musical Somewhere Over the Border – variety indeed! And now? We could not be more pleased that Syracuse Stage is among the very first regional theatres to produce The Play That Goes Wrong. Stage’s team has been putting all the puzzle pieces of this production in place for months – to paraphrase artistic director Bob Hupp, “an awful lot of things have to go perfectly right to make this 8

play go so perfectly wrong.” Between perfecting the physics and math employed in the physical production, finding ways to share just enough of what’s in store without giving away all the fun, and working with school groups who are relaunching fieldtrips . . . everyone on the staff has been focused on this project with great anticipation. You’re in for a treat. And of course, we’re not done yet! In June, join us for the world premiere of resident playwright Kyle Bass’s salt/city/blues, with striking parallels to conversations happening in our own community in 2022. salt/city/ blues will be joined in mid-June by The Most Beautiful Home…Maybe, a thought-provoking interactive theatre project exploring housing insecurity in Syracuse, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Washington DC… and by extension, in the nation as a whole. We’ll also explore the connections between these two works and that of architect/urban designer Sek-

AN INTERVIEW WITH JONATHAN SAYER

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG was written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, founding members of the Mischief Theatre. It premiered at the Old Red Lion Theatre in London in 2012 as a one act version, then moved to Trafalgar Studios in 2013. A UK tour followed starting in January 2014 at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury and visiting 17 venues and ending in Darlington in July, prior to being given a West End venue. The play then opened at the Duchess Theatre in September 2014, where it remains and is currently booking until October 2022. The original cast then opened the play on Broadway in 2017

at the Lyceum Theatre with JJ Abrams making his debut as a theatrical producer and becoming the longest running play on Broadway at the time with 745 regular performances and 27 previews. It is currently running Off-Broadway at the New World Stages. It has been performed in over 35 countries across six continents, winning multiple awards around the world including the WhatsOnStage and Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The following is an interview with Jonathan Sayer that appeared in the Times of Turnbridge Wells in October 2021.

WHO ARE MISCHIEF THEATRE?

WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG?

We started off in 2008 as a group who specialized in improvised comedy but now we create new comedy for theatre and television. We began performing in Edinburgh and London and are now bringing our work to lots of different places all over the world!

There are three writers so there are a few different answers. I suppose we have all worked in theatre and have experiences of things going awry in shows we have been in. Some of my favorite moments watching theatre has been where things have gone dreadfully wrong and the actors are forced to deal with the mistake and try to keep the show on track.

He won’t be upset, it’s just a practical thing and I think you’ve got to try and approach this work in the same way.” HOW DID YOU CREATE THE SCRIPT?

HOW DO YOU DEFINE FUNNY?

The three of us were living together at the time in a pretty run down flat in Gunnersbury. We were all working in bars and call centers and restaurants and, in the evenings, we’d come home and we’d write until the early hours. The initial script I think took about a month to put together and we then workshopped the script with the rest of the Mischief team. Everyone’s done a lot of improv so we try and take those principles into the writing room and into rehearsal where if someone has an idea you accept it and you build on it.

As long as you’re always scrutinizing in a positive way, that’s only going to make the work better.

YOU CAN BE HONEST: ARE THE UNFORTUNATE ACTORS DEPICTED BASED ON ANYONE IN REAL LIFE? Ha ha! Nobody is being directly spoofed! The characters were all found in rehearsal and through performing in front of an audience. That said we’ve all been part of productions that have gone wrong and we’ve all made mistakes on stage (although hopefully nothing as catastrophic as in this play!) There’s a lot of experience to draw on for finding who the characters are and how they respond to embarrassment. Some of the events in the play seem like an actor’s worst nightmare! HAVE YOU HAD ANY FEEDBACK FROM ACTORS THEMSELVES? Lots of actors come up to us at the end of shows, be they professional or amateur, with some fantastic stories of things that have happened to them in different productions. I think the show has quite a cathartic effect for them. But it’s not just actors, I think the idea of making a fool of yourself in front of a huge number of people is something that everyone can relate to. Everyone

has felt that feeling where they want the ground to open up and swallow them, so they get on side with the characters in the play and they really want them to get to the end of the show! THIS SHOW’S JOURNEY HAS BEEN A RAGS TO RICHES STORY. HAS THE SUCCESS OF THE SHOW SURPRISED YOU? Absolutely. I remember about 10 years ago performing in our improv show and there were more people on stage than there were in the audience so of course it’s a surprise! We’ve been totally blown away by the response. We’re so thrilled that people enjoy the work and the characters and that we’ve been able to make so many different people laugh. The show began in such a small way performing in a 60-seater pub theatre so for it now to be being enjoyed in huge venues all around the world is very humbling and wonderful.

And so, he got his second M.F.A. in dramatic writing (NYU-Tisch ‘21) so that he could create authentic South Asian content for himself and his friends. Rishan recently appeared on TV shows like Apple TV’s Little Voice and NBC’s New Amsterdam and will be seen next in Apple TV’s limited series WeCrashed. He last appeared at Syracuse Stage as Raj in Yoga Play.

Mara Rich (Properties Design) has worked in props design, construction, and management for more than a decade. She currently serves as prop shop supervisor for Syracuse Stage and an instructor for props classes in the Syracuse University Department of Drama. While she predominately works on the production and construction side of props, she loves the backstory and storytelling she gets to create in her design work. The Play That Goes Wrong has been a great opportunity to combine both problem solving and design. While the show holds many challenges, it is a prop designer’s dream show.

All core members of Mischief Theatre, they had already worked in comedy together for several years before they started out as a writing team. The three’s

first piece was The Play That Goes Wrong (winner – Best New Comedy – Olivier Awards and What’s On Stage Awards). The show started out on the London and Edinburgh fringe before touring the UK and internationally and then returning to the West End in September 2014, where it is still running. It played

Peter Pan Goes Wrong was the trio’s second piece, opening in November 2014 for a UK tour before a hugely successful West End season in Christmas 2015. Henry, Henry, and Jonathan recently adapted the script of Peter Pan Goes Wrong for the BBC, which was filmed with the original

West End cast and broadcast to rave reviews on New Year’s Eve. They were invited back to wreak more havoc at the BBC in 2017 with Christmas Carol Goes Wrong on BBC1. DIRECTOR/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his sixth season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. He recently directed Eureka Day, Annapurna, Talley’s Folly, Amadeus, Noises Off, Next to Normal, and The Three Musketeers for Stage. Prior to coming to central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award-winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres

of the Bentley/Milhaud version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the Year by the Arkansas Arts Council. He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, one dog, and two cats.

MANAGING DIRECTOR Jill A. Anderson has served as managing director of Syracuse Stage since 2016. Jill is responsible for Stage’s $7.5 million operating budget and has oversight of fundraising, marketing, and operational matters within the organization. Prior to joining Stage, Jill spent a decade as general manager at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT. During her tenure, the O’Neill completed a $7 million capital campaign and campus expansion, doubled its operating budget, and was honored with a 2015 National Medal of Arts and the 2010 Regional Theatre Tony Award. Under the O’Neill’s aegis, Jill also developed the Baltic Playwrights Conference, an annual international new play development retreat held

in Hiiumaa, Estonia. Previously, Jill spent five years in the production office at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage, after working as a stage manager in Minnesota, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. In addition to her work at Stage, Jill is an instructor in the Theater Management program of the Syracuse University Department of Drama, building on her work with high school and college students elsewhere, including at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Jill was recognized as part of the Central New York Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty” awards in 2017 and has served on numerous municipal and non-profit boards. Jill is delighted to call Central New York home, but will always be a proud cheesehead, originally hailing from Marshfield, Wisconsin.

R E S I D E N T P L AY W R I G H T Kyle Bass is the author of the play Possessing Harriet, commissioned by the Onondaga Historical Association, which premiered at Syracuse Stage in 2018, was subsequently produced at Franklin Stage Company, and will be produced at the East Lynn Theater Company and at SUNY Cortland in 2022. His new plays are salt/city/blues, which will have its premiere at Syracuse Stage in 2022, Citizen James, or The Young Man Without A Country, a one-man show on James Baldwin, commissioned by Syracuse Stage, which streamed in 2021, the libretto for Libba Cotton: Here This Day, a new opera based on the life of American folk music legend Libba Cotten, commissioned by The Society for New Music, and Wakeman & Toliver, commissioned by Franklin Stage Company. Kyle’s other full-length plays include Tender Rain, Bleecker Street, Baldwin vs. Buckley: The Faith of Our Fathers, which has been presented at Cornell University, Colgate University, the University of Delaware, and was presented at Syracuse University in September 2021, and Separated, a documentary theatre piece about the student military veterans at Syracuse University, which was presented at Syracuse Stage and the Paley Center in New York. With National Medal of Arts recipient Ping Chong, Kyle is the co-author of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which premiered at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in

New York. Kyle has also written for Noh theatre under commission by Theatre Nohgaku. Kyle is the coauthor of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days (Broad Green Pictures, 2017), which stars awardwinning veteran actor Tom Skerritt, and the author of the screenplay Abundance, an adaptation of the novel Milk by Darcy Steinke. As dramaturg Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist and MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which premiered at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, subsequently produced at Yale Rep and the Kennedy Center, and he was script consulted on Thoughts of a Colored Man, which premiered at Syracuse Stage in 2019 and opened on Broadway in 2021. Kyle’s plays and other writings have appeared in the journals Callaloo and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the essay anthology Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk about Writing. Kyle is the founding curator of Syracuse Stage’s annual Cold Read Festival of New Plays, which has hosted some of the country’s mostproduced playwrights, including Larissa FastHorse and Kate Hamill. He has also served Syracuse Stage as literary manager and resident dramaturg and received the 2021 Impact Award as Artist as Manager, presented by the Arts Administration Program at Le Moyne College. After five seasons as associate artistic director at Syracuse Stage, in September 2021 Kyle was announced the theatre’s first-ever resident play-

was the 2019/20 Susan P. Stroman Visiting Playwright at the University of Delaware. A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area.
