2013 Tony Award-Winning Comedy! A dysfunctional family’s reunion you won’t soon forget. { about } This raucous comedy smashes together Chekhov’s classic themes of loss

and longing with Disney’s Snow White and a prophetic housekeeper. Sonia and Vanya have frittered their lives away in the family farmhouse. Enter their sister, selfabsorbed movie star Masha with her 20-something boy toy Spike, and the stage is set for a weekend of hilarity. Recommended for ages 14 and up.

{ notes }

Marcela Lorca (Scorched 2013 and Caroline, or Change 2012) returns to direct.

 You don’t need to be familiar with the plays of Anton Chekhov to enjoy this comedy, which according to playwright Christopher Durang takes “Chekhov scenes and characters and put(s) them into a blender.”  The original Broadway cast included Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce, Kristine Nielsen, and Billy Magnussen.  In addition to the Tony Award, Vanya... earned the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, Drama League, and Drama Desk awards, all for best play of the season.

By Christopher Durang Directed by Marcela Lorca

 The character of Vanya has one of the best rants about modern life you will ever witness. “Deliriously funny.” –New York Times “Hugely entertaining.” –USA Today

Haunting as well as haunted. August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prizewinning masterpiece. { about } The past threatens to pull apart brother and sister. Bernice treasures a oneof-a-kind piano, an heirloom with carved figures of their enslaved ancestors. Boy Willie suddenly arrives from the South determined to sell the piano and buy the land his family worked on. When the ghost of the piano’s original owner appears, family conflicts escalate to a dramatic confrontation. With lyrical language rolling from the rowdy to the tender, this is one of Wilson’s finest. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

playwright august wilson.

 The setting is 1936 Pittsburgh in the aftermath of the Great Depression.  The Piano Lesson is the fourth play in Wilson’s Century Cycle, which includes 10 plays– one for each decade of the 20th century.  Wilson was inspired by artist Romare Bearden’s The Piano Lesson, featuring a strong female figure.  The first production, in 1987 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, featured Samuel L. Jackson in the role of Boy Willie.

“It seems to sing even when it is talking.” –New York Times “a reminder of how emotionally sustaining great theatre can be.” –New York Times

the hit broadway musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. { about } Bubbling with joy and 60s era music and dance, Hairspray delights with

the pleasures of a classic American musical. Tracy Turnblad is a teen whose life revolves around dancing on the Corny Collins TV show. Who knew that a teenybopper TV show could be a catalyst for integration? You can’t stop the beat, and truth be told, you won’t want to once the all-singing and dancing cast takes the stage. Recommended for all ages.

 The 2002 Broadway production won 8 Tony Awards and ran for 2,500 performances.  The Corny Collins Show is based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show, a competitor to American Bandstand.  David Rockwell, renowned architect and Syracuse University alumnus, designed the Broadway set.  Composer Marc Shaiman wrote “Let Me Be Your Star” and other original songs for the hit TV show Smash. “Sweet, infinitely spirited.” –Variety Magazine “Infectious melodies.” –USA Today

Bill Fennelly (A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2013) returns to direct.

Fresh and funny new play about love, sex, and marriage in the 19th century. about

{ } It’s the 1880s and electricity is all the rage. In a quiet home office, a doctor experiments with a new instrument for treating “hysteria.” The device? A vibrator. In this genuinely touching, original, and wickedly funny play, Sarah Ruhl (The Clean House) explores relationships and sexual fulfillment while managing to stay discreetly beneath the crisp white sheets of Victorian propriety. Recommended for ages 14 and up.  Actual medical treatments, as described in The Technology of Orgasm by Rachel P. Maines, inspired Sarah Ruhl in writing this play.  “Things that seem impossibly strange in the play are all true—such as the Chattanooga Vibrator—and the vagaries of wet nursing,” said the playwright.  As with her play The Clean House, In the Next Room takes an insightful look at marriage, intimacy, and loving relationships.  Sarah Ruhl is a contemporary American playwright, the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. “Smart, charming, iridescently funny-serious jewel.”–Bloomberg “Insightful, fresh and funny.” –The New York Times

May Adrales (Chinglish 2014) returns to direct.

 The Syracuse Stage production will originate at South Africa’s legendary Market Theatre before moving to Princeton’s McCarter Theatre Center and then to Syracuse.  Athol Fugard is an internationally acclaimed South African playwright whose work deals with the political and social upheaval of the apartheid and post-apartheid eras in South Africa.  Co-creators John Kani and Winston Ntshona performed in the 1975 Broadway production and together won the Tony Award for Best Actor.  John Kani and Winston Ntshona were jailed in South Africa for 23 days for performing this play. “A joyous hymn to human nature.” –The New York Times “Hypnotic… Powerful.” –The New York Post

gle for human dignity, a black man in apartheid-era South Africa tries to overcome oppressive work regulations to support his family. Co-creator John Kani performed in the original production and won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Actor. Now, 40 years later, Kani directs his son, Atandwa Kani, in this new international production. Riveting seriocomedy by the creator of TV’s hit drama Brothers & Sisters. { about } Are there secrets that should always be kept? In this smart, sharply funny,

and sensitive contemporary play, Jon Robin Baitz folds art, politics, and family secrets into a tumultuous drama that pits a liberal middle-aged writer against her conservative parents. Who owns a family’s history? There are no easy answers in this 2012 Pulitzer Prize-nominated play where certainty shifts like sand dunes in the wind. Recommended for ages 14 and up. Jon Robin Baitz is an American playwright, screenwriter, TV producer, and actor.

{ notes }

 The title refers to a sign on Interstate 10 in California, which indicates that the freeway is headed towards Indio, CA and “other Desert Cities.”  The original title was Love and Mercy.  The fictional Wyeth Family is led by a mother and father highly regarded in old Hollywood and admired for their service to Ronald and Nancy Reagan.  The Broadway production featured Stockard Channing, Rachel Griffiths, Stacy Keach, Judith Light, and Thomas Sadoski.

“Smart, juicy, gorgeously written.” –Newsday “Richly enjoyable new play for grown-ups.” –The New York Times
